- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16The only plug-in this guy talks about is Chax. Chax is nice, but it still doesn't compare to Adium X.
- vdubski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Trillian is not an OS X app.
- northerncomfort, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12After reading his last article on Safari, I actually switched over and now use Safari for 99% of the day. I eagerly installed Chax, preparing myself for a fun time configuring my new all-powerful iChat.
And what happened? iChat was just as clunky as ever. I'll stick with Adium. Maybe 10.5 Leopard will breathe new life into iChat, but this Chax can't do it. - shanal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7the day adium gets video chat is the day I will never even have to worry about looking at ichat again. I only logh onto ichat when i need to videochat...

Dugg down for illegal apostrophe. - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6First, it has to be said... "Breath new life?"
That said, Chax is an okay enhancement, though if they really wanted iChat to compete with Adium, themes would be a good place to start. Some of the themes for Adium are soooo good.
And also, does anyone know a way to merge buddy lists for AIM and Jabber in iChat... so that there's just one window? I've been looking for a way to do that. - LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, I hear you on the AV capabilities, I switch to iChat for video chat, and I rarely use the audio chat feature. Once Adium gets those features it will definitely be the best client out there.
- gridrunner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's still too fiddly to set up. These are the instructions: http://www.jabber.org.au/ichat
Until I can JUST enter my hotmail address and password (like in Adium) I can't be bothered to go through all that Jabber account setup malarkey. I just can't be bothered reading instructions that long. Call my lazy, but Macs are supposed to be all about simplicity. - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My favorite thing about Adium X is how much you can customize the look and I don't think that Apple would ever make iChat that customizable. When they pick a style and look for an app they make sure it is pretty much set in stone.
- mipadi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Having used the beta for a while, I haven't seen much of a performance hit with the Java library (and I don't even have a high-end Mac). It's certainly not clunkier than libgaim; in fact, the devs found that the joscar library was actually a bit faster.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, Chax is as good as it gets for iChat. I find Adium's AV features severly lacking, and that is what keeps me from switching. Chax is fine for me untill they adress video chat and audio chat features.
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8That is a Windows program.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Your wish has come true!
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm really hoping for a beta of the next version of iChat at WWDC like we got for iChat AV. I'd love to play around with some of the new features Apple's been cooking up.
- voidptr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks. That fixed it.
- thejokell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3jOscar has actually given adium a performance boost. 1.0 is a great update to Adium.
- isdereks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@NerdyNinja: iChat does support encryption if you have a .Mac account I believe. I tried and it prompted me with a .Mac login.
@Drahknon: No way to merge contact lists. I've looked high and low for a method to merge Bonjour with the standard buddy list with no success. - phill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In my experience, Jabber has constant disconnects. I've used Jabber and Google Talk, both would drop off a few times a day. What I really don't like is that when they drop off, iChat (and Adium) does not auto-reconnect to their services. I don't notice they drop off then I start missing important calls. So I'll stay away from Jabber until I hear that their servers are more stable.
- idesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man if iChat could contain all accounts/contact lists in one window I might be inclined to switch back. Adium is very refined though, and can be customized easily.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh God thank you!
I use iChat alot, not becasue I like it (I've spent at least 3 hours renaming everyones screenames and putting pictures of them in their buddy icons so I can see who they are. The only reason I use it is becuase of broken family, and I don't see alot of them outside of videochat. - JoeyDeacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use iChat all the time and have no real need for uber custimisation however it does piss em off bigtime that you simply cannot aggregate all contacts in a single window. I've tried Adium but until they do AV no interest. Right now it looks like I'm stuck with iChat and Skype video.
- Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've used Adium, among others, in the past but I always come back to iChat. Adium is an excellent app, that goes without saying. For better or worse I prefer it because of how well it integrates with all of Mac OS X, Mail, Address Book, Audio/Video Chatting (a big one), you can go online without launching the app, etc. It's a PITA to set up MSN and Yahoo contacts but you've done it, it's fine and I prefer to do that and just use one app for all 3 networks (AIM, MSN, Yahoo).
- voidptr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My biggest problem with iChat is that it doesn't support AOL's ability to signon from multiple places. If I've left a windows box connected somewhere, it either won't let me connect or disconnects everywhere else.
- dragazis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The guy who develops Chax is working on Adium's Summer of Code team. He is working on the new tab interface (for those that did not know). Chax is very helpful to iChat in certain aspects, but still doesn't give iChat the total functionality that Adium has.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Both support OTR and have plugins for encryption, yes. But keep in mind that Trillian is a Windows-only application.
- isdereks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In the iChat preferences, go to Accounts > *check* Allow multiple logins for this account.
Enable that and you will be prompted with a window after signing on that you're signed on elsewhere. - NerdyNinja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Adium can do it :) Don't know about iChat though - but you really shouldn't be using iChat anyway...
Can iChat do encryption? - bchambers28, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I am really hoping for a new version of iChat today at WWDC
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've never seen that message. Every once and a while it likes to sign me off for no reason whatsoever, but I chalk that up to the AIM servers freaking out a little bit.
- psychoactivist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Breathe new life" is a Biblical allusion to God breathing life into the dust He formed to create Adam.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1adium needs a solid AV function - then we are good to go. for now i use iChat for video and Adium for regular everyday stuff. Chax is ok, but aside from adding tabs it doesn't do a whole lot in comparison to Adium.
- Newtylicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is some really useful information. Thank you for contributing. I bet the Adium team will fix these problems straight away.
- linuxpunk81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I use ichat with chax and yahoo messenger for os x because I absolutley cant stand adium, and I dont know why.
- strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@mipadi @thejokell
Have either of you actually used both versions? Startup time in the beta (with Joscar) is noticeably slower on the same hardware than the stable libgaim version. Once it's actually up and running performance is fine, but don't just listen to the devs, try it yourself. - isdereks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Breathe - take air into
What's wrong with the way it was used? Breath would be an inhalation or exhalation. Close, but I think either or works.
I don't think Apple would ever consider themes. It would be a nice feature though. However, I think the new features Apple should implement are tabs, multiple logins, set to invisible, and actual multi-protocol support outside of Jabber. - corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1iChat has let me sign in at multiple locations... It comes up with a little box that says "Allow Once, Allow Always, Do not Allow"
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This isn't the place for tech support. Try the Adium forums:
http://forums.cocoaforge.com/index.php?c=2 - mipadi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ strcmp: If you read my post, you'd see that I have been using the beta (and working with the SVN source) for a while. ;)
- bluer32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What you guys have all failed to mention is that the BEST feature that iChat might want to consider taking on is the ability to leave offline messages and also to be able to send messages to folks who are in hiding.
iChat sucks people. It is WEAK.
The only thing I like about it is it's audio and video.
Oh, and did I mention the emoticons suck too. Man, what lame-tard designed those. Must have been the janitor at the Apple corp office. Man those emoticons definately need work.
I'll take YaPoo Instant Messanger for mac anyday over iChat. Sending messages, sending emoticons, sending files is so much more fun in YaPoo, Just my two cents. - DNABeast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah, Trillian is the only program I really missed when I 'switched' to mac.
Adium is pretty good but Trillian was always lights years ahead. - ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1or did it ... ? hhhmmm?
- CaptainStone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Does Adium or Trillian support encrypted communication? I'll look at their sites in a bit. I use ichat because it does video/audio and encryption. The encryption is only because I already have a .Mac account, which as of the past three months, with numerous emails to and from Apple, has not had a successful sync of the keychain entries. I am in the mood for a change / choice.
- priceless721, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4i pretty much use ichat on the mac and trillian pro on the pc it does make me feel a little left out without all the cool advanced options it is nice to see this.
- CaptainStone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Just saw that Trillian is Windows only. Didn't read deep enough yet on the sites about encryption, so thanks for the info.
- frikk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Has anyone else had this problem:
With Adium X, everything worked great for a few weeks with my new macbook. Now when I try to login, it hangs for about 20 seconds then says "You've been trying to sign on too quickly, try again in a few minutes" or something like that. I've reinstalled several times and it still happens. Fire has no problem connecting, but I really liked Adium. - Rigbymatt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1im still tied to windows, and use trillian. i tried to switch back to AIM with the Aimutation plugin, but i missed my underlined wiki links in text
- strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2This is good since Adium 1.0 looks like a POS from the betas. Since they switched to a Java library (joscar) for handling AIM, startup time is always greater than 10 seconds.
- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1@davdav
Go read the ***** forums, you fool. There's an OSX Universal Binary version coming soon - I do development for the program in the way of third-party OPTools, so I'm in a much better position than you to know what platform it will run on. - khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2You guys should wait for the Macintosh universal binary of Camfrog to be released - you'll NEVER find a better program for one-on-one voice/videochat (Not even skype has video speeds good enough for deaf people to sign to each other) or for multi-user room chats (see up to 100 people at one time with the registered pro version.)
