- neuroplasmius, on 07/15/2009, -29/+176I think Palm should make their own music software if they are trying to threaten Apple with continuing support of the Palm Pre. Like, if you tout music capability, but the easiest way to put music on your device is through a competitor's software, there's something wrong.
- motivatedguy, on 07/16/2009, -30/+156This just in... iTunes has never supported 3rd party mp3 players or phones.
- TheNakedChef, on 07/16/2009, -35/+144Makes me wonder how would apple react if MS prevented iTunes from running on windows? it's pretty much monopolistic practice which tries to lock in a customer into certain platform.
- titantitan, on 07/16/2009, -18/+119lets go thru this for the nth time again shall we?
Apple hasn't locked out Palm (or anyone) out of anything, there is a nice little xml file in your itunes library folder that has all the info about your entire music collection, location, song name, track number, e.t.c, e.t.c, This isn't Palm being locked out of your music library, anyone can parse it to build their own syncing app, it's just that Palm is too lazy to put the time in to build a slick one.
What is a problem is Palm spoofing its USB ID to pretend it's a IPod, Palm really need a slap on this wrist for this, for if other manufactures start doing this it's going to be a headache for us all. - rnawky, on 07/16/2009, -14/+102And did this small patch need to be 80MB?
- skinrock, on 07/16/2009, -17/+103It was a hack on Palm's end to make iTunes think the Pre was a supported device (based on the USB ID). It's silly to get upset over this, Palm never announced official support for iTunes and they shouldn't have counted on it.
- Darkyuubi, on 07/16/2009, -25/+101Wow stop the presses. Because this is surprise of the century?
Come on. Did you seriously expect Apple to not do it? I mean, if it was the other way around. Do you think Palm would have done differently?
(The answer to both of those questions are no btw) - mnemy, on 07/15/2009, -52/+112douches
- adeelarshad82, on 07/15/2009, -17/+71Honestly if they are starting to feel threatened then they might as well pack up and leave cuz competition is only going to build up from here.
I want to see what happens to them when Google OS releases. Google OS isn't only in competition with windows, it's also competing with Mac OS. - sdp343, on 07/16/2009, -28/+82I really don't see what the big deal is. Apple made iTunes for the iPod so why would they let the competition piggy back their software?
- perhapsimcrazy, on 07/16/2009, -6/+59Breaking: Not breaking.
- Shadoblak, on 07/16/2009, -1/+50You can drag and drop music onto the Pre can't you?
- WanderingGuru, on 07/16/2009, -13/+57iTunes wasn't made for the iPod. iTunes wasn't even made by Apple. It was originally a program called SoundJam back in '99 and Apple just bought the program, made a new UI, added CD burning, and took out a bunch of other functionality and have basically just been maintaining it since.
iTunes was initially a music player, then when the iPod came out they added some more programming to make it the only real easy way to interface with it, then they added the Apple Store to it. Them blocking out other music hardware for no good reason other than to fool some consumers into buing their hardware is no different than much of the anti-trust crap Microsoft has gone through in the last decade... obviously though the fanboys see it differently.
I don't care either way, I just drag and drop my music to my Pre and rarely ever even use iTunes since it's gotten so bloated. Just trying to provide a little perspective. ;) - andrewlotta, on 07/16/2009, -7/+47Not gonna lie, that would be a kick ass *****' move.
Microsoft hasn't had many of those in a while. - GreenAlien, on 07/16/2009, -4/+44"But, it shows one other thing: Apple feels threatened by the Pre. "
It shows Apple are keeping the same policy. Nothing has changed since the Pre turned up. - rnawky, on 07/16/2009, -14/+52Really? Downloading 80MB is easier than downloading a <4MB patch?
Apple has NO clue how to patch.
iTunes is the size of a Windows Service Pack.
That's ***** retarded. - udjet, on 07/16/2009, -2/+37It wasn't done because it was the easiest. It was done because it was an instant user base. Thus attracting people who were already locked in to Itunes (I use the term "locked in" very loosely).
- openthewell, on 07/16/2009, -7/+41Use only Apple, or none of Apple; that seems to be there motto. I chose the latter years ago.
- Crash1337, on 07/16/2009, -35/+67Not surprised you're getting dugg down. If this was Microsoft, all the apple fan boys would be like "***** MICROSOFT!!!" and digg the comment up.
- InvaderDem, on 07/16/2009, -27/+56Isn't it comforting to know that if Microsoft pulled something like this, they'd get slapped with a lawsuit saying they're forcing a monopoly? Yet Apple will probably get away with this hidden method of forcing people to buy their hardware?
Oh yeah, and this isn't breaking. This isn't nearly as big as Michael Jackson dying - a more proper word is "Predictable:" - NomortaL1, on 07/16/2009, -1/+29"MS made windows for IE?"
you mean they made IE for windows. - INTERNETMASTER, on 07/16/2009, -40/+68and the closed system becomes even more limited
- atm259, on 07/16/2009, -14/+41I don't normally digg up this type of comment, but this is just *****. My mom has a palm pre and she doesn't know ***** about computers, this is just one more hour of me teaching her how to sync with another program... sigh.
- blizzardice1, on 07/16/2009, -9/+34Dugg down for using "Breaking"
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -13/+38Actualy, lots of companies DON'T do things like this. And whne a company like Microsoft comes even CLOSE to doing something like this, everyone whines like a little bitch saying how anti-compettive they are and calling for a world-wide investigation.
- digitaldivinci, on 07/16/2009, -65/+90Can't say I blame them.
- cuervoman914, on 07/16/2009, -2/+26yup
- chembro84, on 07/16/2009, -8/+30GIve me a break with this breaking ***** please
- GreenAlien, on 07/16/2009, -0/+21The iTunes library is folders of music files and an XML plain text file. Not much obfuscation going on there. And it wouldn't be the first app to do this.
- PhillyMJS, on 07/16/2009, -0/+20Never say never. It might not now, but it used to:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2172?viewlocale=en_U ... - atm259, on 07/16/2009, -2/+21There is a thumbs up in case you agree / like the person's comment.
- serif69, on 07/16/2009, -4/+23It isn't a monopoly. There are other music players and software available that do the same thing. In fact, there are 3rd party applications that access the iTunes music library for the explicit purpose of transferring the files to mobile devices. Not only is Apple not the only game in town for music players in general, they're not even the only game in town for their own music player.
- Trumpetman4eva, on 07/16/2009, -6/+25Even if it is the whole app, 80 MB for a media player is ridiculous.
- louiemantia, on 07/16/2009, -5/+24They can get money for it. Stupid question.
- PoliticalMan922, on 07/15/2009, -47/+65Not sure why, but I guess it makes sense. Apple wants to make as much of an effort to get people to get the iPhone and not the Palm Pre. But, it shows one other thing: Apple feels threatened by the Pre. I wonder why...:P
- Micrll, on 07/16/2009, -5/+23Apple release a press statement earlier today commenting on the issue:
'Duh' - nerd05, on 07/16/2009, -5/+22Most companies don't do patches anymore, since bandwidth is expendable. Now you just download a replacement copy of the whole app and it gets replaced that way. It's easier that way and less error-prone.
- GreenAlien, on 07/16/2009, -1/+18Exactly. Palm are more than welcome to pull their finger out and write their own sync app which uses the iTunes library. This would be the sensible non-hack way of doing it.
- unwiseone, on 07/16/2009, -0/+17And who exactly does this hurt? Palm? Palm Pre owners? Yeah, let me cry a river for the Palm owners complaining that they can't use a direct competitor software to sync their device.
Next I'll hear PS3 and Xbox360 owners complaining they can't uses the other's controllers with their consoles. - stevene, on 07/16/2009, -2/+19elister: If you set iTunes to 'manually manage songs and playlists' you can drag and drop music onto the iPod...
- meridian, on 07/16/2009, -56/+72Amarok > iTunes, plain and simple.
- jwdav, on 07/16/2009, -2/+18Slightly misleading headline also - what Apple blocked was the ability of the Pre to identify itself as an iPod. There are still all kinds of options for transferring iTunes files to a Pre or a number of other devices.
Palm was asking for it, designing a product to impersonate a competitors product to pimp of their software. Palm should have, and hopefully is building their own software. - rnawky, on 07/16/2009, -24/+40$10 says the people who dugg you down are Apple fanboys who haven't a clue what Amarok is.
- DelMonte, on 07/16/2009, -0/+15" Apple feels threatened by the Pre. I wonder why...:P"
Apple would have done the same thing to any company advertising iTunes compatibility through reverse-engineering the iPod/iTunes protocols.
Why are they only doing this to Palm? Because it's the only company that ever tried that (at least publicly) - PoliticalMan922, on 07/15/2009, -5/+20Any company needs to be afraid of Google. Google is such a colossal company that anyone who tries to compete will be screwed. However, I think that Apple and Windows will be okay so long as they don't do anything ridiculously stupid.
- lordmike, on 07/16/2009, -3/+18Well, Google's product that competes with the iPhone is Android, not ChromeOS... S far, it hasn't been much of a threat...
- macmcraeart, on 07/16/2009, -15/+30Apple is just trying to do us a favor by stopping millions of pre users from constipating a perfectly good pc with that iTunes bloatware.
- AquaOSX, on 07/16/2009, -2/+17I'd rather they start backing an OSS project or integrating with something cool like LaLa.
- noisymime, on 07/16/2009, -6/+21That is the dumbest piece of logic I've seen in a while on Digg (And that's saying something). An operating system is made for the sole purpose of executing and managing other programs. That is its primary use.
iTunes has a completely separate and Apple blessed method of syncing with devices, Palm had to expect this if they ignore that and use an undocumented workaround. -
