- eridius, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29What ball issue? That scroll ball is the best scrolling device I've ever used.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24"No visible laser", "works on glass", "works with 1 or 2 AA's", "the best wireless mouse i've used", and Apple says it's 20 times more sensitive than an optical mouse - Brilliant! Now if Apple fixes the ball issue or thinks of something better to replace that, it would be perfect.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20The scroll boob er ball is the best part, but it does get stuck from dirt build up sometimes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25I like a lot of Apple's products but at £49, this is ridiculous. For £4 more you can get the Logitech S530 Cordless Desktop for Mac from Dabs.com. This includes a keyboard that is much, much better than Apple's own and a mouse with a wheel that is comfortable to use.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23It may be a good mouse but is it worth $90? Apple expects UK people to pay £49 for this. I will not be one of them.
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20It's like a white bean with a nipple.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The scroll ball is great because, like track-pad scrolling, it gives you pixel-level scroll precision, unlike the traditional notchy scroll wheels. And of course it lets you scroll sideways as well, a necessity for Garage Band and crappy web pages that use 1024 px fixed width.
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16it may be $69 in the US, but ordering it in the UK is 49 squid, which exchanges to closer to $90
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21@ Clodagh, I do care what neiltc has to say because he proves a point thus defeating what you said Clodagh.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19I care as well. You're an absolute idiot, clodagh.
- nathos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I love it when you talk dirty!
- josephacote, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@Scruffydan
Yes, if Logitech or MS put out a mouse with this many features that looked this good there would be this much attention, if not more. - aten, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Its only $69 USD

I like resting my fingers on the mouse at all times, with microswitches you only get a click when the switch is activated, but with the mighty mouse, thanks to its wierdo sensor thing, you have to actually take all weight off the mouse surface and then touch (click) the side you want rather than just apply additional pressure to the side/button you want to click with.
Theres nothing wrong with microswitches, and they need not disrupt the smooth curves of the mouse. There are many PC mice that just have a single sheet of plastic for the top, not individual pieces for each button and the body of the mouse. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I like resting my fingers on the mouse at all times,"
So you never lift your finger to get to the scroll wheel?
"with microswitches you only get a click when the switch is activated,"
The MightyMouse main click for left and right click is a real microswitch, and it clicks... I don't see what you meant.
" but with the mighty mouse, thanks to its wierdo sensor thing, you have to actually take all weight off the mouse surface and then touch (click) the side you want rather than just apply additional pressure to the side/button you want to click with."
This only applies to right clicks. You make it sound like you have you lift your right finger to left-click, which is not true.
If you click with your fingers on both the left and right parts of the MM, you get a left click. You seem so concerned about weight and pressure of your fingers on the mouse.
Well 90% of my clicks are left-clicks, and because I'm using a Mighty Mouse, I do left clicks with 3-4 fingers at the time, distributing the pressure while you are putting all pressure and weight on the same finger over and over again. - doctabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7To all of those saying "What the hell?! It's just a mouse!":
I, for one, have yet to find a bluetooth mouse that works as well as Apple's. Yes, I know that there are plenty of good RF wireless mice, but therein lies the problem: I do not want to have to lug around a USB adapter to put into my laptop each time I use it ESPECIALLY if it's an entire docking station.
I've tried a few other bluetooth mice, and a lot of them suffer from a couple mutual problems:
*Lagging: the cursor does not move as you move the mouse quickly enough.
*Turning off: the mouse is either unable to turn off or is difficulty achieved-- I don't want my mouse to run out of batteries in my bag.
*Size/shape: they just aren't made for a human hand. The mighty mouse isn't really an exception here.
So, while some other bluetooth mice might get the last one right, they almost always suck in the first two. Apple has them beat in that department, but I'm still wondering if there is one really good bluetooth mouse out there. - nickstarr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11It is only $69 USD or $62 with a student discount.
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6To answer Ahnteis question,
the scroll ball works faster if it's just going up and down or side to side to prevent that very issue - brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@benthere:
"Fast RF is just as good as Bluetooth for mice."
Except that it requires a proprietary connection. Bluetooth = nothing to plug in. - donatj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@einsteinbqat theres only one "squezze" button
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes, they have before. Microsoft's sidescroll mice when they were released were on a lot of tech news sites, and logitech has has things in the news before also.
The difference is 1) Apple creates creative stuff. 2) the experience with those items are fine tuned.....When people have a good experience with any company, they are likely to appreciate further products a lot more and want to tell their friends.
If you don't like it, don't digg it. Obviously a lot of people appreciate the side by side comparison. Personally, I've never seen a optical mouse used on 2'' glass peice, and that alone is enough to make me digg this. - aten, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11You should have said "it cost around $90 USD in the UK"
- gorelog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Is it just me or is there nothing there? Just the title of the article and a place to leave comments. I see no pictures, no article.
- aviazn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@aten
He did. Quote: "Apple expects UK people to pay £49 for this. I will not be one of them." - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10the problem with it is not with the ball, it is with the innacurate click detection. a few days of using one was enough for me to go back to my old mouse -- it never seemed to know if i was left or right clicking.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9fairly cheap for a laser mouse?
The logitech G7 which just blows this mouse out of the water only costs 60 dollars on newegg. It has a 2000dpi laser which is the best currently available.
Spending 60 dollars on a mouse is hard enough already, spending another 10 dollars for a crappier one is just stupid. - commandar!, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Agreed, spent about 15 minutes playing with one of the wired Mighty Mice in the Apple Store and I absolutely hated the scroll ball. I'll stick to my trust Logitech MX500, thank you. It's still the most ergonomic mouse I've ever used, and I prefer the texture of the surface on the MX500 to that of the newer MX510/518.
- benthere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why would you buy on amazon if it's cheaper at newegg?
Also, performance-wise Fast RF is just as good as Bluetooth for mice.
The extra buttons (usually about 12 total) for Logitech mice, their high dpi, and Lithium Ion batteries would make me want to stick with my MX1000. - brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's a trackpad, not a mouse.
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5neiltc13, What do you expect when the tax is included in the price and the fact you are importing it from the US?
- donatj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol, but that required a paralell port cable from the mouse, no longer wireless... and macs don't even have paralell ports, the horror! We need wireless paralell ports now!
- Blarion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This plus the LCD mouse mod from hack a day (http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000823073811/) equals the best mouse ever.

- staunch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@benthere
or in the case of my experience with logitech (supposedly _gaming_ mice like the G5 that I have) the middle button is really hard to press and sometimes the scroll gets out of sync with the wheel. - Lou3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm a mac fan boy, I can admit that, but I HATE Apple Mice. I've had them all from the ghastly imac puck, to the corded pro mouse, to the bluetooth mouse, up to the new mighty mouse. I switch as soon as possible. One, I do a lot of photoshop and my hand begins to cramp up almost immediately. Two, I hate the one button thing.
The mighty mouse "two" button is terrible and finicky. I actually really like the ball scrolling, but no thanks. Apple bluetooth mice are heavy and the batteries die in a week. I'll stick to my microsoft laser mouse. - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4UK VAT (Value Added Tax) is 17.5%, not 30%.
Also, as I've said before on Digg, EU consumer law is far stronger than that in the US. Whilst the "3 year guarantee on everything" is a myth created by misinterpretation of the somewhat more complex EU rules and regulations, it's still highly unlikely that (e.g.) the 90 day warranty Sony offer on the PlayStation 2 in the US would stand here.
I'd argue that the US situation allows companies to sell goods at artificially cheap prices; those in the US may prefer their situation. Either way, it's reasonable for companies to charge slightly more in the EU on this basis; the question is by how much?
Anyway, that's my 2 cents (*).... VAT and having-to-provide-a-decent-warranty may provide valid reasons for the difference in cost.
(*) Euro cents, of course ;-) Although since I'm in the UK, that's more like 1 1/2 pence... - greenamp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6drizek said : "fairly cheap for a laser mouse?

The G7 is not a bluetooth mouse, and it costs $68 on Amazon. - dcmiltown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Doesn't every "laser" mouse have an invisible laser? The Kensington I referred to above has an invisible laser. It wasn't advertised as such, so i am assuming that is just an included benefit of the laser product.
PS. My Kensington doesn't work on glass. I tried it on the 1/4" glass that my desk is made of. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just because there are an extra 20 potential functions for a mouse button doesn't mean that a mouse with 20 buttons is at all useful.
- adamcarrington, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is a mouse without a tail really a mouse?
Discuss. - Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Really? I'd think you'd end up scrolling sideways without meaning to a lot. Is this an issue?
- Flump5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3is there anything appple cant turn sexy?
- ncsuCrewG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3According to the Apple website, it does not work with Windows. Also, rechargeable would be nice.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4A: The absolute bizzare cult nature of its followers.
- thinkdifferent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Put in rechargeable batteries instead of alkaline... bingo rechargeable! What is nice about the Apple bluetooth products is they are very energy effecient and they can alert you thru the OS when the battery is getting low. Typically this is a couple of weeks before you actually will run out. My keyboard typically lasts months between battery replacements.
- lozadaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why can't people take better pictures. If you have time, add a little light before snapping away. Anyway thanks for your post. I think I may have to pick one up.
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I never really liked Kensington's actual mice, but their Expert Mouse trackball is second to none.
- ignorantcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Strange that new Apple products are almost always not avaliable in Malaysia until decades (months) later. We're still waiting in queue for macbooks. (A total of 5!!!!! came in last week)
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Please keep quiet about this. There are no Apple problems. There are no Apple problems. There are no Apple problems...
