- eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love the feedback, and I appreciate all of it.
I had to distinguish this machine from every other Mac in the world somehow, since I really did keep it nearly completely authentic looking from the outside...plus the beige, c'mon.
I always loved the lines of the original Macintoshes, but the color never took to me, plus I had to cover the scratches of making the floppy slot larger.
The site was put together in a fit after the previously dugg Japanese mod, mine has been done for 5 months, and only hasn't been posted out of my own laziness. On the upside, it works great, and I know that because I've been using it.
This screen is JUST as easy to read as the original, and that's fantastic. I still have VGA output to a big apple monitor when I need it, and VNC from all my loonix boxes for everything else, it is a media front-end after all.
LCD's in this size are impossible to find, go look.
Thanks for the diggs!!!! - eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The functionality of this machine is not compromised in the slightest by this mod, the size, yes. If anything this mod makes the machine more useful, due to the integrated monitor.
The B&W screen is sharp and easy on the eyes like a BOOK, imagine that!
Really, I never had one of these machines, and always wished I could have used one in its hay day...this is my way of creating those memories, by hacking the past.
This machine is so slick looking, an art artifact, but is a doorstop by today's computing standards, I am supercharging the 57 Chevy of the computer world.
I love that people don't understand...it very much validates this project. - JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually think seeing OS X in black and white is pretty cool. Excellent mod too. Nice job.
- eyevee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool!
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait - did you just say LCD screens aren't available in that size?
Call me crazy, but I have seen LCD screens in every shape and size imaginable. You might have had to special order something, and you would probably have to deal with a little bit of overscan, but it can be done.
Otherwise I'd defiantly have gone with a color screen, although I do have a very small VGA B&W monitor that is actually very easy to look at. They don't refresh the same, or something, because you don't notice flickering at 60Hz and I'm very sensitive to that.
ps. The original wasn't black. So staying true went out the door as soon as you decided to paint it black. - eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mark1372: Horrible description. Don't write any user manuals.
Thanks, was that your way of asking me to write a detailed howto?
I promise you if you attempt to build this it will -fall- together, when you strip the mac and start mocking things up, it fits like magic, like they were meant to be.
Here is the CRT I used: http://www.miraclebusiness.com/mt217.htm
Like I said in the article, it is an exact match for the existing CRT mounting. - eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1atomicham: I found the keyboard for 2$ at the TRW swap meet in Los Angeles: http://www.w6trw.com/swapmeet/w6trw_arc_swapmeet.htm Hope to see you there!
But if you really want something like that, but much much cooler, go for the PFU America (Fujitsu) Happy Hackers Keyboard in beautiful black: http://store.yahoo.com/pfuca-store/haphackeylit1.html
No windows Key!
Picture: http://www.pfu.fujitsu.com/en/hhkeyboard/images/200B.jpg
Though I've still got lots of IBM Model 100 keyboards I use and love, the HHK2 is my baby. - eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mancat: Sorry, I'd have to disagree with you, the black looks just great, silver would have been far too distracting. Chrome paint doesn't work on textured surfaces.
White was considered, but rejected because of the high likely hood of the machine getting dirty and starting to look funky.
cobweb: The VGA is split using a VGA splitter cable, it does not span, it only mirrors. The resolution on both must match, and both need not be black and white, natch.
diggerphelps: Jack Blacks Fat Wise-cracks can't detract from a posh Blackintosh that I hacked using knack to pack looming whack platform choosing cacks far in the cracks. So turn your back on the flack and track the trail back to ack. the lack of detail in the other 'macks' who fail to turn trash into art and wind up tacky and pale. - mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks very cool. I'm impressed. In all honesty, one of the best DIY hacks I've seen in a very very long time. Good to see you stick to the original Classic screen, but that is one thing I would have changed to an LCD (if there was one in the right size). But that's just me. I love what you did though.
You've got my digg. - hynemonth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good evening,
(Except subject, but how to contact you differently?)
I saw on your site, a screenshots of an Unix, looks a Mac OS7. (http://www.destruc.tv/gallery/file/screenshots/unixmac.gif)
I don't know if it is that, but I would like to have more information.
Thank you !
(Sorry for rather poor English...)
Ly. H - eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Believe me, this "paper white" svga crt is very easy on the eyes. LCD might have been nice, but they aren't available in this size.
My original idea was to use an LCD and make the entire thing about 4-5 inches thick, chop shop style.
The goal was to be true to the original FIRST. - johnvixen1, on 09/10/2008, -0/+0Hey ElTooZero,
What keyboard is that you are using with the MacMiniPlus?
I have been looking for a compact USB keyboard along those lines. Thanks!
http://www.studentbunk.com - eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0davidbstewart: yep, you wouldn't ***** believe it, but it really really does...at least in my Plus 1MB, I haven't done a side-by side with the Macintosh Classic, but I pray it works ok.
The trick is a little ridge of sheet-metal bent upwards to form a front bumper on the inner-chassis, the mini gets propped on this, and butted up against the front as closely as possible, then it is zip tied through the vents in the bottom of the mini, to existing holes in the macintosh chassis.
Thanks for the questions guys! Once I get off work I'll update the page and maybe to a hip demo movie ala Steve's original Macintosh Intro: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-231518237666860736&q=mac+1984+intro - Tachonium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Better looking job than the Japanese one imo.
- FigBug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nifty
- rsayers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did you use the original mac plus monitor or gut another? If so, which crt did you use?
Great mod btw, I've been contemplating the same thing since I purchased my mini... I had a dead classic begging for something cool to be done with it. - rockmanac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool :)
-A - loudestnoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is slick as a whistle
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why?
- digitalbuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Color Classic/Mac Mini mod
- mike1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad he didnt use the MacTV for the Mod instead - It came out around 1995/6 if memory serves me correct, and it least it is ALREADY black, and it has a color monitor - Probably a better form factor as well...
Check it out:
http://www.lowendmac.com/500/mactv.shtml - proteus11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love it!!! It made me go looking for my Color Classic! A Color Classic running Tiger would be awesome!
- eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kitsune818: the mouse thing is not a bad idea actually...This is a Macintosh Plus 1MB, actually...I have a Macintosh Classic that's ready for v2, maybe with color if I can find a screen that'll fit (tried before).
Macintosh Classic is a little better for this mod because of the style of bezel around the floppy slot, which is much easier to lengthen.
There was a lot of sanding done to mine to smooth out some harsh bevels I didn't like in the original design, and I'm very happy with how mine turned out.
Other name candidates: Blackintosh, Minitosh, Frankentosh Macinmini. Blackintosh is by far my favorite. - atomicham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey ElTooZero,
What keyboard is that you are using with the MacMiniPlus?
I have been looking for a compact USB keyboard along those lines. Thanks! - Korszca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool!
- atomicham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ElTooZero: Funny, I worked at TRW (in Denver) 15 years ago, and, in fact, bought a Mac Plus at the swap meet for $5 at the time.
I do like the happy hacking keyboards, except for the location of the delete key. I hate it right above "Enter." That has been my reason for having skipped them. Maybe I'll have to get over it... :) - elemwalker, on 01/15/2008, -0/+0Very cool project!
I've been working out a way of reviving an old Macplus or Colour Classic, do you know anyone who's done it or think there might be problems?
Cheers - eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0atomicham: I totally understand, and I got over it quick, now I switch between my IBM 100's, HHK's, and standard keyboards with ease...
The good thing about the funky del key on the HHK is the fact that nobody who sits down at your station can use your machine comfortably...which I like. - Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been holding on to a Mac Plus 1mb for years with this exact purpose in mind (except when I first thought of it, I was thinking I'd have to find a Mac Cube since the mini didn't exist yet).. I'm going to wait until I can get a color monitor/screen though. And it *has* to be grey (The Pluses, at least the ones I've always come into contact with, were not beige until sunlight/age messed with the color and yellowed them. When they were new they were very much light grey).
Now you need to hack that ancient Mac Plus mouse to match :) - portator17, on 08/23/2008, -0/+0http://wiihouiblu.blogspot.com http://amyloisanimalis.blogspot.com http://brnwnedcarefree.blogspot.com http://bongobookslllt.blogspot.com http://classificdcoly.blogspot.com http://yormancyyyee.blogspot.com http://emmlomsentj.blogspot.com http://countershefto.blogspot.com http://eistensibleeoz.blogspot.com http://nenuncias.blogspot.com
- davidbstewart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So the DVD tray aligned perfectly with the floppy slot? I don't imagine this would be the case for later compacts. What you use to cut the case for this? Drimmel?
- sarmatt, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1Very good article!!!! I like it!!! Please Visit my pages!
http://phone-cheap.pushline.com/ - cobweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice work. what did you do to split off the vga connection for an external monitor? Does it do spanning or just mirroring?
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm.
A black Mac.
You should show it to Jack Black. - Tagg3rX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hurm... intresting
Now get it to interact with MAX the nintendo bot and you got all the nostaliga i'm looking for.
Keep up the good work my old friend!
Dan - docxxvi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0to think i'll never get that minute back... ever.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why not hack in an LCD? Sure it might be as nostalogic but hell it'd sure put less strain on the eyes...
Otherwise it's very cool :-) - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I don't like the black paint. I think even chrome spraypaint would have looked better.
