Beejive releases JiveTalk IM for iPhone alpha
engadget.com — It seems Beejive's JiveTalk for iPhone is the first IM client -- in alpha or otherwise -- to actually get out the gate for the iPhone. Featuring almost all flavors of IM -- including AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, GoogleTalk, ICQ, and Jabber -- you'll finally be able to message on the go and perhaps even forget that Apple really forgot to include iChat.

- smarusich, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6using it now. works great!
- ZicklePop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Works with Google Hosted!
- FourDoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I've tried meebo and now Beejive and I must say that I like beejive's interface much more than meebo's as it fits everything to scale on the iPhones screen. That plus the iPhone SMS like log of your conversation makes it fit with the iPhone's overall look and feel.
- undersky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1er....how can you use meebo??? everyone i know of get stuck at the part when they need to submit the message. on meebo you have to press "enter" in order to send, but iphone keyboard's "return" will insert a line break...
- Mikecol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Meebo updated; the bug you described is no more.

- leontes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6This is great, but there are a couple major drawbacks:
1. Speed. Going to screens the first time each session is slower than a bee stuck in molasses on barbiturates.
2. Given that it's part of the web browser, it has no way of notifying you unless you are chatting at the time. It's a bit of a 'buzz'kill when you realize that all webbased socialization software cannot demand your attention with the iphone OS as is.
For a iphone based app though, it's very well implemented, so quickly. - GreenPlastik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Works great when you want to AIM in a pinch. I think the shortage of iChat or AIM currently is because you can't send voice and data at the same time over EDGE network, so therefore having a native iChat app would turn your iPhone into an iPod with iChat and voicemail.
This app works great when you are just trying to send a quick IM to someone. - rwallen, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1If the iPhone does get ichat and you can use google talk with it, can you make free calls through google talk?
- Sandurz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1No.
Browser-based Google Talk only does text chat.
- Sandurz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1No.
- xpankrat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3There's an iPhone-tailored version of Trillian Astra.
http://blog.ceruleanstudios.com/?p=162 - Wailord, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's slow and web-based though...with the rumors of iChat being imminent, I don't see this lasting forever. Then again, it'll do for the time being.
- msaleem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Just gave it a shot and though it slows down the phone substantially, it is performing very good for an early alpha. A much needed addition for any iPhone user.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Kind of odd, you can't try it in a web browser, even Safari. Anyone got some screens?
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I guess you could change your browser user agent to look like the iPhone. However, I'm not sure what the iPhone's UA string is... can anyone help us out here?
- flanigan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I just thought of that scene in the movie Airplane. "Excuse me sir, but I speak jive."
- shootsfired, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1More like....
Jive Lady: Oh stewardess! I speak jive
- shootsfired, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1More like....
- TheCheeks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Why didnt they include iChat anyways?
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Someone above suggested that it's because it would use EDGE, and when EDGE is in use, you can't take calls, which would mean staying logged into IM would be pretty pointless.
- eybear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The reason they didn't include iChat is to cash in on SMS messaging. Notice on the rate plans that an extra $10 gives you 1500 sms messages. Including iChat would allow consumers to use the unlimited data package via EDGE, thus losing the potential revenue.
@cdmarcus: you can definitely use EDGE while taking calls (i.e. surfing on safari, or google map while in call works)- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11) Notice the reply button?
2) No, you can't. According to the Gizmodo review, when you're using Safari or Google Maps NOT on a WiFi connection, all calls get redirected to voicemail. Also, if you're on a call and not on a WiFi network, you can't use Safari or Google Maps.

- ExistentialFunk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0the iPhone's pretty dope, but buying it is pretty wanton
(and beejive sounds like a breakdancer from the 70's) - djbobhoskins, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1http://www.picli.com - best iphone app for my money
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It works pretty well, given that you have to run inside Safari..still hoping for not just iChat, but more something like Adium as an app for the iPhone.
- jnorris441, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1"aim.connected.too.much" GAY
- NintendoFan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Tried out Beejive and have to say, that it's even worse to use than Meebo on the iPhone, which was pretty bad. If you have quite a few buddies, you're literally slammed with a wall of text instead of your buddy list and can't do anything with it as the load times are very poor due to all of the graphics and text that are trying to be loaded from a server that can't handle it too well. So far, the best IM app for the iPhone has to be eBuddy, hands down. It lacks graphics and zooming is required as well as quite a bit of useless time wasted opening a text box each time you want to talk, but it isn't loading a whole lot of data - only text - and as a result, it doesn't take forever to load and doesn't kill my battery, even with automatic updates enabled. Don't bother with Meebo or Beejive, the graphical aspects LOOK nice, but are just a pain in the ass to deal with due to the load times and what really matters in the end is the ability to use the program, which only eBuddy has been able to do.
- rmeddy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1AH PITY THE FOO DAT MESS WIT MAH JIBA JABA, oh stewardess ,I speak Jive.
- houndeyex, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Buried, as myself and plenty of other people don't give a ***** about the iPhone anymore.
- ericatha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2well then you obviously don't have an iPhone, so this story doesn't concern you anyway.

- xoineg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1WOW, it is beautiful, works great and easy to use. it is awesome!!!
To the developers, THANKS!!!!!!! - rivviepop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For those of you just trying JiveTalk for the first time, stick with the developers and provide them feedback in a positive, friendly manner. The development team is top-notch, fast and friendly - this being the first alpha, there's sure to be more work done to make it better and better. The company did an *outstanding* job developing the JiveTalk application for BlackBerry users and BeeJive is well regarded by all of the BB users as being a terrific company with a great product.
Research for yourself:

Search for JiveTalk across all of BBF in general and you will see their track record. They are great developers -- stick with them, act professionally and the iPhone version should be a killer app. - sophiaperennis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Works perfectly on my iPhone; I tried it for both Yahoo- and MSN messenger.
- bitwiseplatypus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one who can't get this site to load on my iPhone? I've been trying for days. When I'm on wifi, it just hangs forever and then fails. On Edge, it loads, but it's just a blank page. What gives?
- majsan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0BeeJive is a cool app but it wasn't first actually, heysan! was out there and working before. Check it out in your iPhone at m.heysan.com
