- cowjuice13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33because scanners have glass in them
- somnus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30It is photoshopped. That's the proof from the branding/design company.
- robrandtoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29I am the owner of http://www.plasmadesign.co.uk/metalbusinesscards.htm . We manufactured the card in question. The image is indeed photoshopped. It is the initial digital proof we created before proceeding to production. The original photo is of a hand pressed up against the glass of a scanner. The design is then photoshopped on to the original photo of the blank card. We use this system because the tooling required to manufacture the cards makes it financially unviable to create one-off proof of concepts.
It is indeed the genuine article. However I cannot confirm whether the details on the card are correct or not :) - coolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21weird, just look at the other images for his cellphone number.

- portwojc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Nearly... Wired had an article on his collection of phone numbers.

- xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Looks badly photoshopped.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I knew it. Wozniak would never use Lucida Sans.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Sure it's photoshopped, they had to blur out the numbers.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15that was taken at MacWorld 2006-"LET ME IN! I"M STEVE WOZNIAK! REALLY!!..SOMEONE OPEN THE DOOR!!!"
- thrasher6670, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12woz spent years trying to get phone numbers like that he talks about it in one article
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/6.09/woz_pr.html - groberts1980, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Did anyone else think the interview was a total disaster? At times Colbert didn't even know how to react. Finally, he just ended the interview. The Woz is a strange man.
- HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"The children of America were making their first prank call.
And the person who answered the phone was Woz."
That just seems so....poetic? - mankyd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10A client of my father paid him in wooden veneer business cards once. Paper thin and amazingly awesome. A bit classier but not neccesarily as stylish compared to this. I was impressed at how durable they were (they were flexible, but would snap if folded.)
- gen2ux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10look familiar? http://www.plasmadesign.co.uk/metalbusinesscards.htm
- MagisterJoe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12That doesn't even look real.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"f" stands for "Fax"
- jobo5432, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Does anyone read the comments BEFORE they post? How many folks are going to say:
"Why does it look like the fingers are pressed up against glass?" - RegalBegal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.luckow.com/clients/woz/colbert.html
Here is a better URL for the same information. Not a close up of a photoshopped proof, but it is the card being handled on the show.. - FlashInPan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's funny what a little publicity will do isn't it? I designed the cards for Woz as I have designed many things for him over the years (such as woz.org). I never anticipated the response he would get from the Colbert Show. Metal cards are cool but a bit too pricey if you ask me. It's easy enough to find places that make them on the web. The place I found that did it best was Plasma Deisgn in the UK. It's just that, remember, if you buy from them, you will also have to pay duty and tax if it is shipped to the US. So add a couple hundred on to your orignial order.
I don't think a terrorist could do much with that card on a plane though. They are pretty flimsy. You could do a lot more damage with a stiletto heel, or maybe even long fingernails.
Regarding dufsky's posting Woz' info on the cards. It's kind of a childish thing to do, but no, also kind of funny too. I removed the originals from my site at luckow.com but, I know, they are out there now. Guess there's nothiing I can do about that. However, if you're not really a 13-year-old, can I respectfully ask that you take it down dufsky? It's no big secret anyway because Woz IS in the phone book. He makes no effort to hide. He's not like that and if you knew him you would realize this. You might enjoy his book, "iWoz" and then you would see what he is reallly like. It will probably be available used on amazon after a few weeks since it just came out last week. People don't realize how Woz has affected every computer user in the world. Are you using a keyboard? Is your monitor in color? Hmmm, I wonder why that is?
The font was Optima by the way.
AL - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Now that metal business cards are no longer interesting, what's next?
- DannySpace, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17Sure it's photoshopped. The fingers give it away; they are pressed down against the glass of a scanner and then the card was photoshopped into the pic. The woz "swish" was poorly cut out and the person who did it didn't even line the lower part of the finger up right. They must work for the mainstream media.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6HOLY ***** PEOPLE!
somnus already explained this. Read a thread before commenting in it.
It's a proof, not a photo. This IS what the card looks like, but it's not the actual card. The file name even says "proof" it in. - chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Yeah I'd love to do business. Here's a razor blade".
- pedaws, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was at the taping with Woz. (Sept 28, 2006) Stephen kept the card and was messing with it following the break. It was real enough for him. he set it on a picture frame on the set, but i didn't notice if anyone removed it.
Side note* Woz didn't come off as well in the interviews as I've seen him do elsewhere. it's a shame he got so side-tracked. - Jack9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Woz@woz.org... why even blur it? IT'S HIS WEBSITE!
- mink78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That's the first thing I thought of too. Thanks for the link.
- JasonHilton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My dad used to own a powdered metal production facility. With the leftover raw material he would make all different kinds of metal business cards. Bronze, Copper, Aluminum, they were really cool.
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The straight-edges argument might hold some water, but some people go to great pains to scan things straight to avoid aliasing.
And just because the fingers were pressed against a scanner doesn't prove that the card wasn't also on the scanner. The flattening of the fingers doesn't prove anything. - heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Patrick Bateman would have an aneurysm if he saw that card.
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thx for the Wired link. Funny about that number.
We've got a pizza joint in my city that's 222-2222. Wonder how many of the operators there field calls like that? I should call and ask... - MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm surprised nobody has commented (at least, that haven't been buried yet) on the silly Woz logo. Ah, the classic "Swoosh".
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Whose the 'tard pressing the business card up against the scanner bed? Its called gravity and its pretty good at holding flat level things down against flat level objects.
And yes, its been photoshopped, I mean, they blurred out the contact information using some form of image manipulation tool. I doubt they used Gimp. - OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't get it? what is the point in seeing a photoshopped metal business card? .. Anyone can order real metal business cards. We were going to order them for my company, but then decided they have a few flaws:
1. you can't write notes on them
2. they don't allow decent color printing (especially if you just get the kind with the holes cut in them)
3. if you give it to an investor and he cuts himself on it, he probably won't return your phone calls. - DigitalCorpus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3True, Here is the original image from a website that was used to create it.
http://www.plasmadesign.co.uk/metalbusinesscards.htm
http://www.plasmadesign.co.uk/Images/PDMetalCard.jpg - Spacemanspif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You can actually get these at plasmadesign.co.uk, and I wouldn't be suprised if he had one but this is not real. Its a photoshop of the plasmadesign demo.
(thanks, gen2ux, you got the link up first) - palmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The glass indentations don't prove this was Photoshopped. If the card were placed on the scanner platen and then the person placed his hand around it against the platen for scale, it would flatten his fingers. Duh.
I'm not saying it wasn't faked, but the finger-flattening is no evidence whatsoever. - satch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4call the cellphone #.
that's definately his voice on the voicemail. - otatop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It says steve@woz.org.
So I guess the blurring worked on you... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the numbers are blurred out now
- sigfpe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Another giveaway that it's photoshopped: the edges of the card are exactly horizontal and vertical, to within a fraction of a pixel. In this case it was obvious anyway, but it's a good giveaway for other photos you may be wondering about.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And now Woz has to change his phone numbers and order a whole new slew of metal business cards... hmm... something smells fishy.
(just a thought) - gorkish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes the cellphone number is real. He told a story about it one time -- he was getting these bizzare calls where he'd hear silence. Finally one time he heard a woman's voice scold her child and realized that BABIES were calling him -- they'd pick up the phone and press the 8 button repeatedly and end up calling Woz.
- u2wedge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and holding prevents any chance of the card scratching the glass.
- somnus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It actually helps with colour and size relation, so I don't mind it.
- Sippi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's was done that way to help mimic someone holding up the card. These seem to be just sample shots so the buyer gets a idea what they would look like when handling one.
