- mbfielding, on 02/19/2009, -1/+68Sounds about right.
- novenator, on 02/20/2009, -2/+44you mean iFart isn't the gift that keeps on giving?
- fluidfoundation, on 02/20/2009, -1/+35Browsing the app store is like standing in the check out line at the grocery store. You're surrounded by micropurchases that look like they'll be cool at the time (like that new gum that's supposed to shoot hot glitter in your mouth) but end up being a frivolous buy. I think that out of the 50+ apps I have on my iPhone, I use only about 4 more than once a week.
- notninja, on 02/21/2009, -0/+26Maybe because a good portion of the apps are terrible?
- WhiteHatTrick, on 02/21/2009, -0/+17A couple weeks ago I was looking at new apps in app sniper. I saw 3 fart machines in a row, 1 simulation electric shaver, followed by 2 more fart machines and 1 more simulation electric shaver, all in a row. It was at that point in time in which I lost faith in humanity.
- jcannonb, on 02/21/2009, -2/+18This just in: People get bored... In other news: The sky today is blue again.
- JoshFester, on 02/20/2009, -5/+17Of course the usage will decline. Why is that surprising?
- cardyology, on 02/21/2009, -1/+11Its no secret that most of the appstore apps are crappy little games & things that are good for about 5 minutes. The ones that sell really well are thigns like iSteam which is probably fun for ooooh, 30 seconds?
- streak, on 02/20/2009, -4/+13The average iPhone app is free.
- johndatserakis, on 02/21/2009, -0/+7that's the thing, even the ones that cost money see rapid decline in use. It's in the study
- MrViklund, on 02/20/2009, -5/+12First download? You mean the first day of use? Keep your facts straight!
Anyway. That's because most of the programs are not very good. But some of them are. And those I continue using. And to be honest. I think that people are just trying out programs because it's fun. I do. I download just to see what it is. The mobile application space is still young. - itsbob, on 02/21/2009, -1/+7You keep telling yourself that, your Verizon contract will be done before you know it.
- liuping, on 02/20/2009, -4/+9Their data collection methods are suspect IMHO. It's east to collect usage data for ad based application, since they contact the ad service each time they are played. But non add bases app don't phone home, so how do they know how many times and when they are played?
- alpha88, on 02/20/2009, -2/+7Because most apps aren't that useful. Instead of using the same app for entertainment over and over, people download new ones.
The ones they pay for (or pay more than $0.99 for), they probably use quite regularly. - linagee, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4Dugg for a story basically saying that iPhone apps suck.
- Murdats, on 02/21/2009, -1/+5the iphone application space is young, the mobile application space is over 10 years old, I have some windows mobile apps from way back.
- mrBitch, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3No, it's your local 3G coverage that fails... How is the App Store responsible for that?
- thejokker, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3it's a dollar, honestly do they think that these are programs that have some sort of lasting appeal?
Maybe apple will try and revamp their store to do a better job of helping users find quality apps but, again it's a dollar. - jeches, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3Well duh... having a new app is like having a new toy. The first time you get it you will play with it until you s*** yourself. Then after you've figured out everything you can do with it, it will bore the earwax out of your ears.
- punkcat, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3its like he said, most are for entertainment. obviously you'll be tired of game after some time.
i like Wii Bowling but it also saw a sharp decline in use after a month. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -1/+4You need a good selection of fart apps for every occasion.
- AboveandBeyond, on 02/21/2009, -7/+9Maybe because apple users are impulsive morons.
- staeiou, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3They only looked at free applications, which are almost always worse than paid applications. It shouldn't be any surprise that only about 5% of the free apps are worth using. This isn't newsworthy until they track paid apps as well.
- pinchduck, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2From my own personal experience, I used PDA's the same way. Load them up with tons of cool looking apps, and end up using them for calendar and task-list functions.
- paradoxum, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2On the contrary, a great majority of major iPhone app developers have signed contracts with analytics companies that do nothing but harvest various metrics based on usage, and aggregate them into useful statistics before selling them to companies interested in making their own iPhone apps.
- zeth006, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Dugg for stating a fact.
- drcreek, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2$0.99/£0.59 = Novelty - It ***** wears off quick. plus after a month you probably have your monies worth.
- hardeep1singh, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2This hold true for all cellphone platforms, this proves that Apple's platform is no exception.
- mrBitch, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Windows mobile apps from way back? Good for you.
Yeah, he meant "the mobile application space for apps running on a shrunk-down-laptop-pretending-to-be-a-phone is still young". - Eaststand, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Wow. This comment was so incredibly stupid it made me gasp.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2There are plenty of very useful apps, just don't need to use them all the time.
- bitterbug, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2It doesn't matter if the apps decline in use.
What matters is if the users perceived value of the app is equal to or better than it's monetary cost. - Eaststand, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Most of them are crap. Most free things normally are.
- mrBitch, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2Except for free apps like "instapaper" (which lets you bookmark and store web articles for reading later when you don't have a wireless or phone service available), you're probably right.
- jakash, on 02/21/2009, -3/+4Wouldn't this decline in usage be the same in most products, particularly things like video games and consoles (especially the Wii).
- HappyScrappy, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1I would have thought this was glaringly obvious from the popularity of iFart and such.
The low pricing goes along with this. People seem them as disposable since they are cheap.
And it's all well and good as long as people don't stop splurging on new apps. - Pecheckler, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1I have like 40 some app store applications and games on my iPhone and I only ever use two of them. The Weather Channel and some telnet/ssh app.
- openingsound, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2what are those 4? curious...?
- Jaspah, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2I assume the iPhone itself collects the data and uploads it to Apple everytime it is synced.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Many are pretty good. The need to use them changes rapidly. Quickvoice (voice recording) for education, Now Playing (movie times), Air Sharing (reading) are the 3 I still use at least 2-3 times week. I use to use AcculFuel (gas), WritePad(touch writepad), Shazam more often, but have found less of a desire to track gas, write on iphone, and find the name to a song. Games get old quick and the memory issues (getting full fast) don't help it; can play tap-tap/tap-defense so many times before it's a bore.
- inactive, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1most of them are gimmicks.
there are a few useful ones and they dont take up much space. I actually used that flashlight thing the other day
BeBot FTW though :D - DMCer, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1The Shovel app for Digg is pretty sweet too (and being free doesn't hurt).
- stuffradio, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1If you want to play an addicting game, get BeeCells Lite. I purchased the full version for 99 cents.
- LoopyChew, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Twitterfon, Facebook, Rolando, i love Katamari.
- angelo1x1, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1Well, at the Google Android Market (http://www.android.com/market/) you have 24 Hours to give back the App if you don´t like it. This would be a great idea for the AppStore also ...
- drexl, on 02/22/2009, -1/+1@WhiteHatTrick............."It was at that point in time" is redundant, at that point or at that time will do nicely. Unless I missed the /s and you were driving the point home, of redundant apps being available.
Plus I just felt like being a dick, I've had a ***** day. - inactive, on 02/22/2009, -1/+1yeah like air. you should stop breathing it until exxon takes ownership and charges you.
- amorpheus, on 02/21/2009, -1/+1Apps are mostly downloaded to try them out, and often it's not what the user wanted. It's kind of "Duh!" that usage declines rapidly.
- fluidfoundation, on 02/21/2009, -1/+1Facebook, Five Dice, WunderRadio, and Trulia.
- bmw7777, on 02/22/2009, -0/+015 seconds I would say, I tried it. Jailbreaking/cracked games FTW. I would gladly pay for games/apps that were worth something, but 95%of paid iPhone apps are rubbish. But if they're free, whatever.
