Automatically fetch iTunes album art
apple.com — I love iTunes and my iPod, but I'm anal and I simply cannot abide with not having album art for my imported CDs. This handy utility integrates transparently with iTunes and automatically retrieves album art from Amazon among many other things. A complete thrill.

I prefer referring to them as "WinKids." :)
Wish this fetched art from Wal-Mart.com. They tend to have larger images for their CD covers. Guess it's still manual grabbing for me. - Stecchino, on 10/31/2007, -21/+185I'm almost physically sick of the Mac vs. Windows flaming on Digg on both sides. Grow the f*** up.

It pretty much covers all the features of GimmeSomeTunes. - gunslingr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12All you Windows whingers can try:

- Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6One posting there got thumbs down for other reasons, but the Wal-Mart tip is top-notch. They have big, decent album art.

- kdjsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, I'm happy to find a free Mac album-art finder. A shame it works only song-by-song, instead of hitting the whole album at once, but it'll work.

- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I must say that this pwns on my PowerMac, makes me actually appreciate iTunes. I was always a Winamp Fan but little apps like this improve my opinion about the experience.

- jtibble, on 10/12/2007, -15/+23Are there any WINDOWS utilities that do the same thing?! ANY?!!
- scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I went on a heavy search about 6-months ago for a solid Windows app. The only decent and automated one I could find was iArt -- I think I paid $5 for it. It's not bad, but it's not perfect. There is another program, "iTunes Art Importer" (I think) that was pretty decent, but not 100% automated.
Amazon is a good place, but the majority of the music I listen to his independent music and manual is the only way to go. - Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -35/+12Windows Media Player 11 Does this, as well as fixing all your ID3 tags. Plus it's built in, not a plug-in.
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12There's a Widget for the Yahoo Widget Engine called iTunes Companion, which does the same thing for Windows. It's free, but it's nagware.
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I used to use this one but it only works in concert with iTunes. My son dropped my iPod in the toilet so I haven't used it in awhile and I don't know if it is still supported in the newer versions of iTunes. Worked great for me if you can stand the iTunes tie in requirement (which I used anyways so it wasn't a bother for me).
http://www.yvg.com/itunesartimporter.shtml - keithharrison, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17I've used iTunes Art Importer which can be found here.
http://www.yvg.com/itunesartimporter.shtml
It also pulls artwork from amazon.com. Worked well for me. - bentheo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1http://frobba.com/main.asp?article=286
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@scottauth: I agree manual is the only way to go. I listen to music that's hardly ever on Amazon so a Google Image Search is the only way to go. Then off into Photoshop to scale them down to 200x200px since I don't want to waste too much disk space. Oh yeah and the id tags have to have correct capitalization, track numbers etc so I usually use Tag & Rename to fetch that data from Freedb.org.
I guess all this makes me more anal than the rest of you guys.
That's right, I said anal, look it up :) - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3http://www.ipodsoft.com/index.php?/software/iart
Although, it used to be free, it's now became Shareware, which is annoying..
- Ben - vandread, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6wow... guy asks for windows utilities that can do this, Crypty gives one that just happens to be free and by microsoft, so he gets modded down.
Come on Apple fanboys, I know you don't like anything not costing a huge amount of money, but don't mod down a guy who suggests a windows solution to a guy asking for a windows solution. - eaasness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Here is a Windows program that uses the ID3 Tags.
Album Cover Art Downloader from: http://louhi.kempele.fi/~skyostil/projects/albumart/ - chromium, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Tag & Rename has been doing that for years.
- shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I would just wonder if there is a way to sort googles images by size, maybe a greasemonkey script or some search string but it really is getting to me having to sort through 150x150 album art for something decent.
- angrychimp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I use Yahoo Widgets ( http://widgets.yahoo.com ) with a widget called iTunes Companion ( http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=33155 ). Works very well for me, with low memory requirements and an extremely nice interface.
Free to use, but has a pop-up every 15-20 minutes asking for a donation. Donations remove the pop-up. - pascalbourque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can try TuneSleeve (free, but donations appreciated): http://tunesleeve.googlepages.com
It's also listed on Digg: http://digg.com/software/A_quick_and_easy_way_to_get_album_artwork_into_your_iTunes_library
It allows you to choose which image is the best among all the images returned by Amazon, and if there is no good match you can launch a search on Google Images with the click of a button then drag&drop the desired image from Google to the album in TuneSleeve. - rauz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@shawnanigans: uh. You see that big thing in Google Image Search that says "Images Showing: All Image Sizes"? Try changing that to "Large Images".
- cloudbrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of the major issues with most of these album art grabbers is the accuracy rate and matching your music to the correct artist/album at Amazon. Most programs will do a simple Amazon search for the artist / album pair in your song's ID3 tags, which is great if all your music is tagged, spelled, and organized correctly. If you have a lot of songs with just the artist and title, or just a filename, most of these programs won't help much.
I'd recommend FixTunes (http://www.fixtunes.com) it will do full-search text look ups on your music and match songs to the original albums (if you just have the artist/title) as well as correct for misspellings, missing words etc. It will also fix any missing and correct tags in addition to adding art work (and all automatically of course).
Disclaimer: FixTunes isn't free and I work for the company that distributes it. But it works well, just so you know. - tonyspencer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yup, by the same guys that make Corripio for Mac. It's called Mamba, and is a 0.3 Beta:

- mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2WHY NO PC VERSION!!!!!!!! *cries in agony*
- gwayne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I use iTunes Art Importer thats mentioned by scottauth. It is not automated but I imported art for every album on my full 30 gig ipod and it was relatively painless.
It does have a feature to automatically update every song but it seems to crash after awhile so I just grabbed the art manually.
http://www.yvg.com/itunesartimporter.shtml- keithharrison, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Heh, you know what they say about great minds...
- schwal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1this is all well and good, exept that it only runs on iTunes 4.6, and it's currently at 6.0.2 i think.
- zero_bishop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It works for me just fine.
- adezero, on 10/12/2007, -23/+10who cares about PC's, mac is all that matters
- slartybardfast, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13Ha! The shoe's on the other foot! 95% of the time, I think WHY NO MAC VERSION?
- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1very real. (realized this myself) however, now you must realize its jsut as abd for them and now they know you you feel and visa versa (hopefully) so stop bashing everyone!
- psobot, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Come on! There are many more programs that do this (for Mac, at least) that do it better and/or simpler.
This seems like spam to me.- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, there's this REALLY awesome widget that does it...
i believe it's called Album Art. ah, here it is http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/music/albumartwidget.html
it's not automated or anything, but it's worked fine for me :D - tonyspencer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, there are several.
I use two widgets:
http://www.liquidx.net/albumartwidget/
http://www.widget-foundry.com/widgets/amazonart.htm
I prefer Album Art, because it will add the whole album rather than track by track, and you can choose Google images, not just Amazon. I have both running, since most of my music is British, and Album Art often comes up with the correct art when AmazonArt doesn't, even if both are set to the same Amazon.
Both are free, but of course, they are Mac OS X Dashboard widgets...
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, there's this REALLY awesome widget that does it...
- ArizonaRose, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3i was so excited until i read the comments about mac only...darn
- craigpestell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7For linux there is Amarok - it will fetch cd covers from amazon.com.
- ParanoidSardine, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Thank you so much! I spent hours yesterday looking for such an app. This answers my needs. Ironically, I find that more of these types of apps are available for PCs than for Mac.
- colonels1020, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6get a macintosh! haha
- armyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -22/+5What's with all this MAC crap lately? Didn't anyone see that digg article late last week that said the number of people out there that actually own a MAC in comparison to PC's was an extremely SMALL percentage?
- vandread, on 10/12/2007, -23/+4Its cause a lot of MAC users read digg and they use MAC because they are tired of using Windows but not computer smart enough to use Linux so they just stay with the OSX and mod down anyone who suggests using anything else. Honestly the only problem I have with OSX is the constant releases that you have to pay for and the fans who just can't accept that anything they do with OSX I can do with Linux. In fact just for mentioning Linux in this post I'm gonna get modded down.
- phonetik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@vandread
Yeah, it's not because linux though awesome for a toy and for server work is a complete PITA to use no matter what distro tries their hardest to make it easier.
I'd rather not have to compile apps from source to install, mmkay?
I also use my unix commandline for all file management in OSX due to the utter craptacularness of Finder.
But I guess that puts me in the "not computer smart" catagory doesnt it? - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"In fact just for mentioning Linux in this post I'm gonna get modded down."
Actually, vandread, you're going to get modded down because of your inane comments. First of all, Mac isn't capitalized, as it isn't an abbreviation (can only Apple users understand this basic grammatical concept???). Secondly, you don't HAVE to pay for any new OS X releases. Just like you don't have to buy a new model car every year. Just use what you have and be content. Or pay money and get the latest and greatest. It's completely within your control. Just because it takes Microsoft half a decade to pump out a minor, feature-stripped, prettified OS update doesn't mean OS X users aren't willing to buy a new OS upgrade every year or two. It's the price you pay for progress, my friend. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17FYI you can ignore the Apple category if your digg preferences if you wish but I guess bitching about it works too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
- pbh101, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1right like you only find apple fanboy comments in the apple section.....
ha!
i'm loving it!
- monkeymad2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2i've downloaded a load of apps to do this, i wonder what app will have the final say to what artwork is used...
- EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10Yay! I've been looking for some nifty Mac apps all day. I just installed OS X on my Dell :)
- avocadobeandip, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Modded down for the simple thought of running Mac OS X on a Dell. For shame.
- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Better than running windows on a Dell...
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5darkyoshi, you have an extremely valid point... :D
- kdjsmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yikes. Anyone gone into the Dell website and entered an e-mail tech support request? Mac OS is listed as an option in the "What OS are you running?" drop-down. Thought I was hallucinating.
- FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i havent tried this yet.... but, from what i remember of getting album art for all the albums, singles and rarities (only 1,100, but still...) amazon A) didnt have many of the (original) covers i was looking for B) puts white space around/ sometimes 20% off logos etc on the album art C) has pretty small image sizes (not that it matters while playing - but if you want to enlarge them at all to see detail, its pretty much worthless)... but maybe they hide the good 3/600x3/600 px images. also, iTunes catalogue does the same thing, retrieving images from amazon... only problem, it picks the wrong one about 25% of the time (your results may vary). this seems like a good idea and time saver... im just too picky, i guess.
another good iTunes add on, if you havent heard of it is DOCK ART (replaces iTunes icon in dock with album art of whatever song youre listening to) http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17435 - digitallysick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I guess i will start using BeOS again and bash everyone on linux, windows and mac lol
- vandread, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2BeOS was great. If only it hadn't died and didn't have an insanely annoying inability to be backwards compatible.
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4yeah BeOS was pretty cool, was basically like MacOS 9 though. Wasn't it created by a former Apple employee?
- tonyspencer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep, Be was founded by former Apple Computer executive Jean-Louis Gassée with capital from Seymour Cray. I guess Apple preferred having Steve Jobs' Reality Distortion Field rather than a loud mouthed Frenchie on the board ;) [Steve set up NeXT after leaving Apple, funded by Ross Perot].
More interesting is Susan Kare, the lady who designed most of the original icons and fonts for the original Mac OS. From wikipedia:
"After leaving Apple in 1985, she became one of the first ten NeXT employees. Since 1988, she has been a successful independent graphic designer working with clients such as Microsoft and IBM. Her projects for Microsoft included the card deck for Windows 3.0's solitaire game, as well as numerous icons and design elements for Windows 3.0. Many of her icons, such as those for Notepad and various Control Panel applications, remained essentially unchanged by Microsoft until Windows XP. Her work for IBM involved icons and design elements for OS/2."
Thus Kare has the distinction of fundamentally affecting the look and feel of every major OS: Mac, Windows, Unix and PS/2.
http://www.kare.com
- WoahPuppets, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5i was all excited until i read amazon
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -28/+7Are you ***** kidding me? People ask for a windows alternative, I name one, and get modded down by Mac fanboys for it. I'll repeat my comment, hopefully apple people can have a little self control this time.
"Windows Media Player 11 Does this, as well as fixing all your ID3 tags. Plus it's built in, not a plug-in."- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15^^ Modded down for tired use of the term "fanboys."
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Modded down for being a whiny bitch about being modded down.
- thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5While it's not automatic, I love using slothradio's firefox extension and mp3tag.de to quickly and easily embed album art into mp3s for my ipod (mp3 tag works great with wine in linux)
http://www.slothradio.com/covers/?sourceid=Mozilla-search&album=metallica
http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ (best freeware program period) - nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4No Windoes. No Digg.
Awww, I've always wanted to say that. :-) - dSlifer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6I think it's actually kinda funny that most the people wanting this are using iTunes on a Windows machine. I also give no digg because its Mac only!
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5Haha, I'm at -11 diggs for suggesting WMP11 to windows users. Never mind the fact that it does a better job than any of these 3rd party apps. The mac users are determined to keep this useful windows-only secret on the down low.
"It just works." Boys and girls....- avocadobeandip, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Considering the thread was about iTunes, your WMP11 comment seems out of place...
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Considering more than half the people in here are asking for a Windows solution, I disagree.
- unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Never mind the fact that it does a better job than any of these 3rd party apps."
It does a better job of importing album art into iTunes? Because that is what this article is about - not alternatives to iTunes itself. That is why you're getting modded down. - Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2The art is embedded in the MP3 and therefore should show up in iTunes just fine. Mine does.
- PJ88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you so much, been looking for something like this!
- Permagrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try these:
Album Art Aggregator(free)
gets folder.jpg images rather easily
http://team.thenexusnet.com/nexus/AAA/
Tag & Rename(shareware)
Very complete and easy to use Library management system.
http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm - PunchMeIBleed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i rather get the image dealy when it legit for windows so theres propor updates
- Hintzer22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this widget has worked the best for me. its the only reason i have dashboard still active and iStat pro...
http://www.widget-foundry.com/widgets/amazonart.htm - adezero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0how do you get it to go through your whole library and download albums? right now I can only get it to fetch an album of the song that is playing
- Hintzer22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0if you want whole library i suggest, "coverscout" its not free but i think works the best and is fast
- Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use art collector, its part of the Menuet application, works awesome :)
- funkkyhippo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4I was so excited to download this.
I read the description and I was like hell yes this is what I've been waiting for.
Imagine how hard I cried when I read the system requirements.
***** you, Mac.- Hintzer22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5thats what i say about windows everytime i want to play counterstrike....
live with it
- Hintzer22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5thats what i say about windows everytime i want to play counterstrike....
- Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For the Linux people:
If you use the Amarok music player, it has this function built-in. Simply click on the spot where the album art is displayed, and it'll fetch images for you to choose from. - atkane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kind of like a free version of Synergy. If you have €5 ($6.353 USD today), I would definitely recommend this instead. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17100
- veeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Was just going to suggest Synergy. Great little program!
- obfuscation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried tag runner ( http://www.tagrunner.de/website/v2/en/home.php ) to add album art and lyrics to my mp3 collection. It worked pretty well but The shareware version is pretty anemic. It runs batch files for those of you with larger collections.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who cares, the Amazon art is *****.
- macguy815, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yuck! I tried using this. No only does it not work right, it's very hard to use.
For anyone on a mac that wants to get their album artwork, I suggest you try "Corripio"
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21050
- It gets the artwork from the best source (the iTunes Music Store it's self)
It works great, I almost got all of my album art today with it.- happyfundave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WOW, this was what i have been wanting on itunes for some time. Its not perfect but its pretty damn good and found most the albums i was looking for but not all of them.
- metsfansam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iMote, Fetch Art, Amazon Art Widget, this is nothing new.
- macguy815, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And quite frankly, how does something like this get on the front page? This is not a good application. Do other users just see the story, and not even bother to see if the application is any good?
- oddysseey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how long have you been using this app?
- dzarkw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another Really good album art finder for Mac is Corripio by nClass Software. It pulls the album art directly from iTMS, so they're big, clean album art. Really nice looking program too.

Oops, posted right before me.- fantastine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We're releasing Mamba 0.3 beta (Windows XP & Vista Beta) tomorrow. The biggest new feature is the ability to get artwork for your music. Here is a teaser: http://nclasssoftware.com/images/hiQual.png

nClass Software (makers of Corripio) - vraicovi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the heads up on this one. It looks great so far!

- pharkwar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Useless.
The app has zero to no interface and disappears after 5 seconds.
Filed with .widget in .trash- oddysseey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2look at the upper right menu bar.. there will be a musc note. With this you will be able to access the preferences!
- pharkwar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Thanks for the tip... but, Preferences was the "zero to no" part.
- oddysseey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what do you mean, zero to no? there's plenty of prefs there!
- pharkwar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Prefs maybe... funcionality lacking.
Software is a tool. I want to use the tool, not have it do all kinds of things that I might not otherwise want it to do.
- MourningZoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Too bad it's for mac only :-
- happyfundave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Too bad a million other people have said that
- gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Clutter http://www.sprote.com/clutter is pretty cool, includes the xcode source as well.
- monkeymagik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sucks that there is no windows version. I already use itunes Art Importer, but it's a pain in the ass to go thru your whole album collection update each individual one and the ones obscure enough not to be listed on amazon.com (the page itunes Art Impoter scrapes for images) you have search manually still.
It should be a feature of the program. itunes is a clunky system hog as well. If WMP 11 properly supported ipods itunes would be off my system. - simpranos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh well. No Windows version. More reason to get a mac. I'm loving this program a lot right now. if only it would just do them all without having to play the song. I dont really have two weeks to play through my library and get the album art. Still, this is an amazing piece of software.
- jolivierld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My app works pretty well too
http://www.specere.net/ - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Windows Media Player does that by default, but you have to be using Windows for that, I guess.
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like Synergy.

Yes it's a whopping $10 (used to be about $5) but it's been around for a long while. Check it out.- atkane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I already suggested this. It's cheaper to buy the license for €5 rather than shell out $10 as €1 is just over $1.26.
- speg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Freaky, I spent 2 hours last night working on this. I had been using other app, but it wasn't having much luck. Eventually I was using a couple of dashboard widgets to go one by one, now it looks like it's time to finish the job!
- M4cb0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish it copied the album art automatically instead of when you play the song =/
