- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does anyone have the link to the original Digg article? Thanks.
- spudge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I dugg this because it does serve a current need. Hope is on the horizon for any lost formatting though, as Microsoft will be releasing updates that will allow older versions of Word to both read AND write .docx files.
See this webcast for more information about the Office 2007 file formats, if you're interested:

I was at the Microsoft launch event yesterday for Vista, Office, and Exchange. One of the utils they showed converts all legacy Word files to docx. The first thing I thought when I saw this was "who the hell would use this?" It's going to take years for companies to adopt Office 2007, if ever, and they'll probably still be using .doc even then. - MegaBabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the community is so quick to respond, great job
- shyguy01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One problem is that Office 2004 for Mac can't open docx yet (and apparently won't be able to until April/May)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good news, he only saves one copy of each file :)
- aloser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't actually have Office 2007 to test (I'm on a Mac), but I downloaded a test file from here: http://osnews.com/story.php/12743/Microsoft-to-Standardize-Office-Formats
And I'd be happy to share the code, but I'm not going to post it publicly because I might have a security hole in it somewhere that someone could pwn my server with. Shoot me an email aloser [ at ] barbdwyer [ dot ] com if you want a peek. - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just use open office... yeah for opendocument format! (now ISO i believe..)
- aloser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Last I heard they weren't coming out with the exention to allow it to read .docx until late next spring; but someone should probably confirm that since I don't know first hand.
- badriram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They already did release updates for XP/2003 to read and write the new formats.

Doesn't Office12 (For Mac) also support docx? (not saying that YOU do have office 12 for Mac either, but others may and my not know that it supports docx) but I thought it did support docx as well. My bad if not. - mia1rab, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1I found this site that enable you to convert your docx document to doc PC or Mac http://www.convertmydocx.com/ Free no cost!
- drodecker, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1I couldn't get this service to work; kept reporting errors.
So instead I found a tool directly from Microsoft! They have the tool on their website available for download that will allow prior versions of Office to open the new docx format. - maddogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you have Office 2003 and need .docx you have this option: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262c0fad-df10-4bdd-bbdf-605441dce97b&DisplayLang=en
If you have Office 2007 you can save in Older .doc Format.
What is the problem? - aloser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If anyone's interested, the site is now up for sale at DigitalPoint:

A company that wants to convert proprietary doc files to a format that is proposed as an ECMA standard (and hopefully ISO after that), and is human readable in a pinch.
A company that hopes to see a benefit in less storage used by the docx compressed format over the older versions. - easytosay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This didn't work for me. It said the file had been converted, but it wasn't. Perhaps you could share the code you've written? Good idea though.
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You need to tweak your imagination, I'm afraid.
- hackmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A great way for us linux users to grab DOCX files! Thanks!
I will just use this until OpenDocument takes hold.
any way you think you could make a ODT-to-text converter? for the poor people who dont have a way to view it? - japface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or you can save as .doc or pdf. i think office 2007 rtm removed the pdf functionality but you can still add it from what i remember from teh MS website. or at least thats what they planning. save it in .doc and everyone can see it. even gmail reads that *****.
- darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heheh :D I knew you would get dugg aloser :D
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Jesus, nobody gets a joke anymore.

- alamandrax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah... about that. i've had problems with this converter. i use 2007 and all my colleagues used 2003, so i suggested they use this plug-in. most of them had problems installing the plug-in leave alone reading the files. any idea why that could be?
fyi, moved to open office now that i quit that place. - comichael, on 02/24/2009, -0/+0Here are some more http://zamzar.com , http://converter.tds.lv
- jschwartz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't imagine it being too hard to convert the docx into doc format (with all the formatting)?
that would be a very good solution. - ZainZXC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did they really have to make a .docx??? Why couldnt they just make a new look??? God... I've been looking all around the internet for a .docx to .doc and I havent found any that work. Plus I also reformated my computer so i dont have office 2007 anymore and I REALLY NEED some files and Im on a windows. If anybody has any solutions just mail me at decoolkid@gmail.com
- cannan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0today Panergy-software released docXConverter for MAC OS X, which convert docx to rtf with almost no visible difference, take a look at the screenshots (which I did by myself by the way). the demo is good for 20 conversions after that you have to buy it.
you can download the trial for docXConverter from here:
http://www.panergy-software.com/buy/download.html - darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wonder who designed the thing.. :P
