If I have to suffer through 8 or 9 Serenity articles a day, you can stomach 1 MacBook Pro review. Why even come into the thread if it bothers you so much, Jackass. - roessnakhan, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I thought the review was fine...
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@sfbay:
I use my laptop in bed. Does that make me wierd? I sometimes watch a movie before I go to sleep, or catch up on my email, or play a game. I doubt that's so unusual.
Regarding any particular things the reviewer pointed out, such as the long beep after installing new RAM, or the size of the laptop, these are valid experiences to convey. I've never installed RAM in a Powerbook (MacBook, whatever), so now I know not to worry if I ever do.
The width matters, too. All the things she mentioned are experiences she had with the MacBook Pro, and I like her writing style. There was a lot of substance in the article, and it was a good read.
If you are upset that she didn't mention one detail about the MacBook, ok. Now you've mentioned it. Good enough.
I thought it was a great article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look, a Chevy Cavalier will give you 4-5 years of solid service. A decent car to own. However, I'll take German car with the sexy interior and fat steering wheel.
The MacBook Pro is definitely in my future. You folks can keep your plastic Dell laptops with the funky vent holes. Best of luck to you! - cclark2222, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a perfectly subjective article. You get a feel of how the reviewer normally uses their computer and how the MBP performs in these scenarios. digg
- podwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they're going to compare a recently-released MacBook Pro with another computer, shouldn't they at least use a computer that's also currently produced? Dell's on the 9400 now, not the 9100. They aren't even comparing similar CPUs between the two.
I think the new Mac is cool, but if you're going to do a comparison, at least make it as comparable as possible. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I found it interesting that they included the built in iSight as a con, especially for the .gov folk. I suppose it could prove problematic, but I'd think that this could be disabled either at the software or hardware level to overcome this negative.
I've thought long and hard about selling my Powerbook G4, but I think I'm going to hold out for a 12" Intel model, weighing less than the current 12" G4 model. A 15" notebook is just a little too large for me (I'm an exceedingly mobile student user). 4 hours battery life would be grand too. - snarkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
I played with the MagSafe connector at the local Apple store yesterday (alas, no sight of the new iPod HiFi.) The reviewer was a little down on it, but I found that it has a nice strong hold. It popped out right around the force level you would expect: anything more would take your laptop down with it. - SFBay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1formz: ok, didn't know about that. Perhaps apple will have to produce one without an isight for that market. Seems pretty draconian though - I can imagine the NSA having such security, but the department of veteran affairs?
I imagine the days where they can easily spot cameras in things like laptops and cellphones are numbered, though. Probably have one in your earring before too long. And couldn't someone just put a fake case on a phone or whatever? Whenever I hear about something like that, I automatically start thinking about the hundred and one ways to get around it. Plenty of inconvenience and lost opportunities, can never stop the really determined spy (or whatever they are trying to stop). - xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1important question... does it run World of Warcraft nicely?
- tolkein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's a bunch of MacBook Pro review on this page - http://www.notebookshoppe.com/?p=19
From the individual conclusions, it looks like the MacBook has serious software issues. - Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@xutopia
It runs World of Warcraft PERFECTLY... I've played about 5-6 hours total (2 1/2 hours in one sitting). The screen is beautiful with it as well... - mvandergrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this review was dead-on esp. compared to a lot of what I've read. I love my MBP but the mag-link connector, in particular, bothers me. I have consulted for a few companies that do not allow video equipment on their premises so I assume this is fairly common.
The comparison with the Dell was interesting. I get better XBench numbers running OS X hacked into a VMWare machine than I do on my MBP. I think this will change as Apple's drivers mature and I upgrade to a 7200rpm hard drive and a couple GB of memory. Then again, I didn't buy the MBP for performance... - obiewon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've read one account of a MacBook Pro that overheated repeatedly. The owner returned this particular laptop. There wasn't any mention of this in the article, so hopefully it is an anomaly.
- Threephaserebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wow ~60 diggs to get on the frontpage, and only 4 comments....
I guess the 60 diehard mac-boys click the digg links, it gets promoted to the frontpage, and that gives off the signal for everyone to digg it regardless... Because after all... It's frontpage-worthy...."
Didn't you know? To be cool you have to digg every story that makes it to the front page! It's standard procedure.
That being said, I enjoy my MacBook Pro since it goes faster than my 3 year old computer, regardless of how well/badly it performs compared to current hardware. The comparison to the Dell running OS X was a nice touch too. - irate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Finally, someeone had the balls to compare OS X on Dell.
- m.sandstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"important question... does it run World of Warcraft nicely?" I too have the same question. (^-^)
But I'm still going to buy the 12" PB until the 12 inch intel version comes out. 15" inch is a little large fore me and it sounds like the new intel model is bigger. - bitswapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most interesting was that running the same OS (well MBP 10.4.5, Dell 10.4.4), the dell lagged on a few bench benchmarks, and was neck-and-neck on all the others, particularily since the dell was running at 3.2Ghz/800Mhz-fsb, and the MacBook Pro was running at 1.83Mhz/667Mhz-fsb.
Did 10.4.5 really have that much of a boost over 10.4.4? The dell harware was specced out so much faster than the MBP, yet it only managed to match the MBP at best. - Bandito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been waiting for actual reviews to arrive as soon as the MBP's started shipping. While everyone regurgitates the same aww at the speed of OSX, the same concerns over non-native apps that require Rosetta, the joy over the sleek design of the MBP and the concerns over not having Firewire 400 & a 'not as fast' Superdrive.... (although this reviewer didn't make much of either of those last points)
'Most' reviewers seem to have the same dissappoint with 3-3.5 hours of battery life?
And what's strkes me as really odd is nearly all reviewers (this one being an exception) JOYFULLY EMBRACE the Magsafe as some life saving (err...laptop saving) phenomenon.
Are all Mac users THAT clumsy? I've had my own personal laptops for about 10 years now (from an old bulky Compaq Presario, to a fairly large Sony Vaio to my current Dell Inspiron 600m) and have NEVER, EVER had it yanked off a desk/table/whereever because someone tripped over my power chord. Then again I don't leave it laying around where people walk either. It gets tucked behind/beneath a desk.
I thought this was common sense. Oh well. - tktk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Bandito,
For some reason, power cords are highly attractive to small kids. Tucking it under furniture is a good idea, but the first time you forget, the kids will find a way to trip over it.
I've seen a baby try to pull himself up to standing via the power cord of one 17" laptop. It was hard to tell if the kid would fall on his ass when the power cord came flying out or if the whole laptop would fall on his head. The dad didn't wait to find out. - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I found it interesting that they included the built in iSight as a con, especially for the .gov folk. A piece of tape probably would work for anyone that paranoid. - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Love the biased comparison with the Dell.
- bradford, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1A longer beep on system boot indicated a change in hardware configuration. It is in no way "mysterious." No digg for a boneheaded reviewer.
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Most interesting was that running the same OS (well MBP 10.4.5, Dell 10.4.4), the dell lagged on a few bench benchmarks, and was neck-and-neck on all the others, particularily since the dell was running at 3.2Ghz/800Mhz-fsb, and the MacBook Pro was running at 1.83Mhz/667Mhz-fsb.

Keep in mind that they are two very different architectures. The Core Duo in the Mac Book Pro is very similar to the Pentium M processors, which can do much more in less clock cycles. So not only do the Pentium M/Core Solo/Duo processors use much less power, they also are very competitive in performance.
I find it kinda strange that ars didn't review a dell laptop with a Core Duo processor, I assume Dell must have some out. A Pentium 4 is going to be better at some things and worse at others when compared to a Core Duo, so we're not really getting an Apple vs Dell comparison in this review. - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0MBP FTW
- gizzymo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this is a bad review as it misses some potential big issues with the macbook pro.
1. Single layer DVD instead of the Dual layer found in the last powerbook. Not good for those who like myself author many DVDs - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Wow ~60 diggs to get on the frontpage, and only 4 comments....

jaymoon, the other part of the equation is the short amount of time it took to get the 60 diggs. That's where the mac-boys were smart! ;-) - SFBay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This is a pretty bad review, I'm used to better from Ars. The reviewer obviously doesn't know too much about macs and biases her score according to some very personal usage scenarios.
- she doesn't like the MagSafe when using her laptop in bed? What percentage of people use their laptops in bed?! 0.1%? I've never, ever taken a laptop to bed and I think anyone who does is weird.
- the long beep she mentioned? it's a mac hardware tone which means something has changed. It is hardly unknown, and heaps of PCs do it too. Is this her first review? Imagine marking the machine down for that!
- marking down the iSight because it MIGHT upset .gov people? Well they can just turn it off then can't they? That is just ridiculous. Hell, there's a microphone on their too which could record your voice if you told it to. Guess all .gov people can't use any laptop with a microphone either then huh? In other words ALL laptops?
- doesn't mention the downgraded DVD drive, which is really annoying for me
- marks down the whole thing because it doesn't fit in her old case? WTF?! This is just stupid. Buy a new damn case, it'll cost you $30. This is a non-reason.
Ars, don't use this clown again, I like your site for its quality and this rubbish just drags it down. No digg. - slappingturtle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Had to Digg it just to piss off the M$ Fanboys.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0At least this review got down to it.
Sticking with DELL! :) - WalterDirt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1If I have to suffer through 8 or 9 Serenity articles a day, you can stomach 1 MacBook Pro review. Why even come into the thread if it bothers you so much, Jackass.
What are you implying that I'm the one posting four hundred Serenity articles? I'm not. So if you're going to bust on me at least make it relevant. - WalterDirt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1That's what digg was missing, another review of the MacBook Pro.

What is Digg?
