- toolwerx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+32here you'll go
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/without-nbc-programming/apples-original-iphone-1983-279688.php - KniteWulf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Because 1984 was just around the corner?
- houndeyex, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Phone sex?
- mushroom, on 10/11/2007, -15/+28I call *****!! why would someone write a check on a phone in 1983
- havic632, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20some of these pics look a little photoshoped
- felchdonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13They're "real," meaning they were actual concepts back in the '80s, but that doesn't mean Apple ever seriously considered making any of them.
There were indeed touchscreens in 1983 - check out the HP 150 http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/abouthp/histnfacts/museum/personalsystems/0031/index.html - directive0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9WTF is Star Treck?
- klutzBunny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9¬_¬; Try reading before you look at the pretty pictures. These are designs. It says so at the top. They are concepts, not working models, and the author never claimed otherwise. So please stop with the: "OMGBBQ! these are such ***** no touchscreen in the 80s!! :O".
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8boom! welcome to my block list.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8these weren't actual products... just design ideas. most of them suck, and that's why we never saw them.
- SmokeyB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5WTF is fantacy?
- MrPig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4http://fudder.de.nyud.net:8080/artikel/2007/07/17/origin-of-the-iphone/
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Try the "Bury" option.
- kernelhappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I agree that these were concept ideas, but you kind of have to forgive what looks like folly in them. Today looking back we know what among these ideas was crap and why. But in the 80's for instance in France the Minitel seemed like it was the way of the future. The idea of writing a check on a telephone device seemed logical (25 years later we don't write the check but we do send the payments from our pc's).
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5woah, I have to admit that looks pretty high tech for 1983 - and it even has some of Apples current design traits. but tell me if i'm wrong, this is a concept not a working device?
- jobscomfort, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You are making an assumption based on cost? That's rich. Do some research before you start with the "guessing". Touch screens were invented in the early 70's. http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/bltouch.htm You're not exactly adding any credibility to your assumption A. People who weren't even alive in the 80's really shouldn't assume any authority to comment on them.
- aliguana, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3looks like an early Nintendo DS or something.
- velocitychannel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3All of these pictures have been seen before. They are all available in a coffee table book called Apple Design that was published in the late 90's. I know. I have it right in front of me.

http://speaker219.110mb.com/mirrors/index.php?mirror=originalappleiphone - jobscomfort, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I agree. The original ideas that grow and evolve with developing technology, needs, and security issues are not bad ideas, they are the raw materials for contemporary ventures into new applications.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Here's another site that has the photo. It's actually not bad for 1983. Not portable but not bad!
http://www.favoritepart.com/Default.aspx?img=714&alt=favorite+Original+iPhone - adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Because not everyone had a credit card back then. Even today some payment gateways allow you to accept checks over the net.
- jakejarvis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://fudder.de.nyud.net:8080/artikel/2007/07/17/origin-of-the-iphone/ - a little slow but it'll load.
- duck_oil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Those were the glory days for Apple and the Apple ][.
- VirtualCtor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2LOL. There's nothing modern about it. All of those are designs that Apple made in the early 80's. The Macintosh SE, and the IIc shown are the production models. The 1985 Macbook is very similar to what the Macintosh Portable looked like.
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Added 2 more images of the phone to the mirror (total of 4 now):
http://speaker219.x8web.com/mirrors/?mirror=originalappleiphone - VirtualCtor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1LOL. Yes, there were touchs screens in in 1983. The HP-150 had a touch screen:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-150
There were also flat screens. Apple made one for the Apple //c in 1984:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Flat_panel_IIc.jpg
The Macintosh Portable came with one in 1989:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_Portable - VirtualCtor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not all of them were concepts. The picture of the Macintosh SE and the Apple //c were the production models.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7why would someone write a check on a phone... ever?
- GloomyYardGnome, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Apple also had a Newton concept that was similar to this. It was basically a regular office phone with a newton tacked on: http://www.capsgetpeeled.com/blog/archives/39_1_b.JPG
- DariusMDeV, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow, people still do ***** like this? Blocked, buryed, and reported.
- SVPirate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just because the concept contained a 'touch screen' doesn't mean the touch screen actually worked, or that it was even in the ballpark of a production idea.
- chochazel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I bet it's got copy and paste.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I will?
- superpixel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Blocked, buryed, and reported." Aside from a clear mastery of ***** English, is your brain capable of understanding digg is largely a tech news site? This find is perfectly acceptable. I know, you hate Apple. We'll put it on your headstone. What a badge of honor. Do you volunteer at Burger King?
- brotherfranciz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Cheque, not check.
- dichter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You mean online p0rn?
- foofightrs777, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Was it related to this promo piece at all?

- ae6ai, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Touchscreens were available 30 years ago. HP had a couple commerical PC with them in the early 1980s.
- JuliusErving, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The poster obviously put iPhone in the title to attract diggs, but this article really has nothing to do with the iPhone. It's an interesting look at some cool conceptual designs that apple never used in the 80s.
- bob7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The Victor 9000 had a touchscreen, too. But again, it was a CRT.
- SVPirate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Apple had some very strange ideas back in the early days. These are mostly only concepts afterall. Most of the parts probably don't even work. I will say I'm suspicious of some of the DATES. The phone looks a lot like part of the Knowledge Navigator project that was underway during the John Sculley (1985-1991ish) era.
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Perhaps it was a proof of concept non working prototype. If so, then the screens are just mock ups.
- VirtualCtor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's the style of keyboard that Apple used in the mid to late 1980s. That keyboard is the same style that came standard with the platinum Macintoshes and the Apple IIgs (except it doesn't have the number pad).
You can see the production model in this picture: http://fudder.de/fileadmin/media/galleries/apple/Macintosh%20SE%20(1983).jpg
I had one on my Apple IIgs. It was the best keyboard I have ever used.
These keyboards weren't PC keyboards, but a proprietary technology called Apple Desktop Bus (ADB). It was somewhat similar to the USB keyboards of today in that you could daisy-chain other devices to the keyboard. Thus, the mouse shown in the Mac SE picture actually plugs into either side of the keyboard, not the computer. - tiburon33, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So I guess this phone makes me 24 years old, in inventor's cycles?
- SiouxForever, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Where can I picked one up, way to cool, oh wait are those tied through At&T?
