- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just think ... Microsoft could've used their "Where would you like to go today?" slogan with the same photo...
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They should have photoshopped an ipod into the picture
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The anti-Apple people are really digging hard on this one. "Its marketting!"
1. The picture is old, back when Apple first started its "Think Different" campaign. Rosa herself agreed to being a subject of the pictures.
2. "Think Different." isn't just some marketting gimmick it was an idea that was meant it could be universally applied to everything. Steve himself said it, they just want people to think different.
3. Apple is the most consumer friendly computer company I can think of. I've never seen or heard Gates or Ballmer exclaim to the crowd "You guys demanded it, so here it is." or anything to that effect.
4. Apple probably thought it was fitting to keep the "think different" text because thats what she did. They thought she should get up and stand, she thought different.
5. It could of been an oversight and they were short on time. Who knows.
You people need to stop trying to put ulterior motives where there probably are none.
Next thing you know you'll be claiming when Apple put up the Hurricane and Tsunami pages up that, that was also a marketting gimmick. - Shire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can any nay-sayers tell me how Apple is going to make any profit from this? Think different is an ad campaign but in no way does the picture compare Apple to Parks. The picture links you to a page dedicated to Parks history, not a product.
Just another example of the anti-Apple camp. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Steve jobs made me give up my seat on the bus one day.
:-( - xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of you kids are pricks... Apple is just paying tribute to a great person and showing respect.. See little things like this matter the most Apple seems to care more about their customers that any other comp manufacturer and THEY listen if you ask for features, since 1984 have you ever heard Steve Ballmer or Bill Gates say "we added this feature because some of you our customers asked for it" NO! instead you hear them talking to evil greedy exec's then announcing "New DRM implemented on windows that will cripples how you use content you PURCHASED etc." that's just one example Being a Windows user that stitched 4 month's ago I'll tell you that you won't look back and now I totally UNDERSTAND why people are sooo devoted to Apple, I don't think I have ever been exacted watching Gates showing off or announcing something new, just never did, bottom line Apple is a great company nuff said..
- TheCheeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ macgyver
Maybe... because... she... thought... different...
Yeah. Maybe that's it. Don't think they are trying to say, "Hey! This chic, see... she thought different and just died, so.. um.. BUY OUR STUFF!!"
Good grief people. We wonder why everything is so damned politically correct now. Can't say anything without some freak criticizing you for it.
Thanks, Apple, for giving tribute to an American Hero. Good on ya. - adamcurtis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's a class act. (Just one more reason I like Apple)
- mushroom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Jobs put a pic on Apples website but Bill Gates dose this http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default
- codemac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Go Rosa Parks. Boo everyone caring if it's on Apple.com or not.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2 They shouldn't use her death as an advertising gimmick.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm going to have to go with the people that think this is kinda exploitation.
Apple thinking differently is nothing like Rosa Parks, MLK, Ghandi, or John Lennon thinking differently. I think that this ad series portrays apple as some kind of helpful world power. I don't think that they're a bad company, I just think that they should stick to promoting computers, not world peace
All in all, I think if they simply had not included the "Think Different" print on the ad, it would have been fine. If they simply included a picture of Ms. Parks and 1913-2005, it would have been much better - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1She didn't spontaneously decide to sit in the front. It's a complete myth. It was carefully planned and she certainly wasn't the first to stage such a protest. Just read any book of the Civil Rights movement.
Not trying to diminish what she did, though. - okcookienc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Steve Jobs: "hey guys, how can we commercialize and use the death of an american civil rights icon to our advantage?"
Marketing Execs: "well, we don't want to be too obvious about it."
Steve: "oh oh, i know... lets put an ipod in her purse and earbuds in her ears."
Execs: "uhhhh....."
Steve: "lets attach a glowing apple to her coffin."
Execs: "ummmmmm..... WTF?!?"
Steve: "or, lets rehash our old, long dead marketing campaign using a classic image of the recently dead woman."
Execs: "brilliant!" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yup, there's nothing like a large corporation exploiting someone for their own monetary gain. This is all advertising+psychology 101 -- you relate or have empathy for the person in the ad, and you assume the company associated with the ad is good. I love Apple products, but their "Think Different" campaign is 100% greedy exploitation -- and brilliant if you're a marketing director.
- SniperZ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3never see microsoft do this
- SniperZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17of7, I dont think apple has much of an Ulterior motives, they used rosa parks in their "think different" campaign years ago. I feel they are just showing respect.
- FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To everyone who thinks Apple could have done a better job honoring Rosa Parks, what did you do to honor her?
Thought so... - Trixie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it is not an "infamous" picture. Get a dictionary!
- cuppyCake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. From the link, some people are getting that Apple is comparing itself to the civil rights movement. Talk about reading between the molecules that make up the lines...
- the_mole1314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can we get over this? I mean a company does something nice and out of the blue, we shouldnt' compare them to others or compare others to them for it. Apple has put Jimmy Carter up when he won the Nobel Peace, and numerous other things. Can't we all just say "hey, that's nice and unexpected apple. thanks."?
- tasadar24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The bastardization of a human being into this kind of perfect being, this hero, for just not giving up her seat in a bus. That's pathetic.
Look, Rosa Parks is not a hero. Is she someone to be respected? Yes. A big modern historical figure? Most definantly. But she is not a hero, and does not deserve all the crap everyone heaps upon her. I'm not belittling the civil rights movement, but do we have to turn every godamn historical figure into a hero or a monster? - jasontho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I don't see why they had to put their "Think Different" apple tag on there. If they really wanted to pay tribute to her, they could have done it without making it look like marketing."
This was used in their "Think Different" campaign. That's why the phrase is on there. They always pay tribute to the people they used for that campaign on their website if they pass away. - bbiggs32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They placed the "Think Different" on the photo because Rosa Parks thought different and took the initiative to move to the front of the bus. Apple thinks they are being clever, and thoughtful. I think it is a nice gesture.
Don't you guys see this? They are paying tribute to her, not marketing.
While I am a liberal, its all you whiny politically correct tree huggers that give all of us a bad name. - tarun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And diggers lamered off the original news about Rosa Parks off the front page yesterday because it was not tech come related. Come on guys!
- TheCheeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*Throws up hands and gives up.*
Some people you just can't through to... to full of hate, malice, or stubbornness. This thread is FULL of them. That and people who don't read all the comments and just post sh!t so they can add their two... no... zero cents... or sense, in this case. - FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unbelievable. Can't you people see they just brought back their old Think Different ad (that's why the logo is there), and added a tribute line giving her name and life dates? I suppose you think it would be better to change the way the ad looked orginally by airbrushing out the logo, as if anyone going to the Apple web site would have no idea the ad came from Apple?
This is a cool think Apple is doing. Apple-hating goes too far sometimes. This is one weird controversy. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Nice exploitation." kohno214
I think they are honest in their attempt. They've paid homage to other influential people in the past. And if they really wanted to exploit these situations, they would do so for every one of this persons when they pass away. But they don't, only certain ones. My guess it's the ones that have had the most impact on the people working at Apple.
But I don't really know for certain and neither do you. So instead of bickering over something that could or could not be true, why not pay respect to a women that helped America become a more freer and a more truly democratic country. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3She died just after the black iPods came out.
Do you think Apple would have run this if you could still only get a white iPod? - FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would make no sense to just put a picture of Rosa Parks on their web site. People would say, "Huh? What's this got to do with Apple?" So they ran the ad just the way it was, but added a tribute at the bottom.
Think Different refers to the people such as Einstein and Parks and the rest did. People who are willing to break the mold, to think differently, are the ones who change history, and Rosa Parks certainly did that. All Apple was hoping by that old ad campaign was to associate their small market share with "thinking differently."
But no matter what Apple does (just as no matter what Microsoft does), there will be idiot tech people who will complain as a knee jerk reaction. Good thing Apple didn't donate money to some charity in Rosa Park's name. People here would go ballistic... - TheCheeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man... some of you people truly must have nothing better to do than bitch about stuff, or Apple, specifically.
As Jasontho (and others have) mentioned, Apple used her in their "Think Different" campaign. Any time someone used in that campaign passes away, Apple recognizes them. What the hell is the big deal? I honestly do not think that Apple intended for a sales increase by simply putting her image on her homepage.
Could they have left the Apple logo itself off? Sure. Why not. But big FN deal. You are really missing the bigger point and focusing in on something that is benign. - SniperZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its sad that some people cant trust companies that do things like this. There is absolutely nothing negative to this, its only positive. If companies chose not to show their emotion, thats fine, let them not show it. Apple isnt afraid to show it, and people should look positively to that, instead of "its just to sell more ipods."
- sexypixels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YOU IDIOTS JUST DON'T GET IT.
Apple is honoring/acknowledging the death of a woman who made huge contributions to this country. Really, who cares that Apple put their logo on the image....this image was part of a campaign started a long time ago, in 1997, and included her because she "thought differently". Apple is basically acknowledging her contributions to society. - alexhhhh, on 11/28/2008, -0/+0I don't think having "think different" on the picture is really that bad. The piece on Rosa Parks could have been taken from any other site, there's no agenda-pushing or anything.
So yeah, what FunHeadlines said. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are better ways to honoring someone than using them in advertisements.
- MikeF2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well put SniperZ. The comments on all the digs make me sick. There is so much hate and cynicism in them. I notice a trend where the comments start out positive and then turn into vitriolic mean spiritedness.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Much luv to Apple for this one!!!
- FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They didn't put their logo on the image, just just ran the old ad the way it originally was with the logo still there, and they added a tribute line.
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1''Like check out www.cnn.com and check out the 2,000th soldier that died in Iraq.''
No. - coolgeek61813, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rosa Parks was against the exploitation of her name for corporate purposes so she might not have like the tribute but who can know now
- sexypixels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Way too many idiots and anti-Apple trolls
- okcookienc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@mikef2005: "The comments on all the digs make me sick. There is so much hate and cynicism in them." Cynicism and intelligence go hand in hand. It is healthy to not blindly trust coprorations.
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mikef2005, there you go.. I think majority of the stupid comments comes from teenagers, cause I sure as hell doubt they come from someone mature or intellectually elevated..
- h0lyHandGrenade, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0Rosa Parks was a great woman, and I admire Apple for what they did..but come on... is Apple's next project going to be the iRosa anti-segregation utility?
Lol, have a laugh. (I know it's lame). I love Apple, and I love Rosa! - tirion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nah, the think different campaign wanted to reflect the values held by these people on Apple. Basically, they represent what apple tries to identify itself with. People see that and do the same.
By posting this, Apple showed one of their people who they admire and tied that to the ideas and values held by all the others in the think different campaign. It's a priviledge to be one of those associated with the campaign, which is why as a marketing strategy, it targeted people who would identify with the same values held by the company and the people in the campaign.
Anyone got any links for the think different campaign images? High res ones? - FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rosa Parks was alive and well when the ad first ran, and she gave permission. Try again, Apple-haters.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope this is discuss on diggnation.
- latinjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Don't you guys see this? They are paying tribute to her, not marketing."
It's marketing and that's it. If it were a tribute they wouldn't have put their logo on the image!!!
I guess putting her birth/death date on the image makes it a tribute??? - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eh I think it's a cheap shot from Apple trying to capitalize on racism.
- energyblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like its only on the US site.
