- mrSimon, on 01/15/2008, -9/+278New model!? This things a software update =D
- JustinHorne, on 01/15/2008, -7/+133And to clarify... The software update (with the new goodies) is free to all existing owners.
- peestandingup, on 01/15/2008, -6/+105This is good, but still isnt great IMO. How can they expect to compete offering $4 per rental with 24 hour only viewing when Netflix has a plan for just twice the money for unlimited rentals + no late restrictions + unlimited online streaming???
I want this to be good, but I just dont see it. - noverflow, on 01/15/2008, -10/+95The best feature is that it is just a software update. That and the price drop.
It almost seems worth it.
Almost - slant, on 01/15/2008, -11/+86I think if Apple opens this thing up to other codecs, they will be selling a lot more of them.
- arjung, on 01/15/2008, -3/+60seriously, can't apple just add DivX/XviD/etc. support to Apple TV and iPhone/iPod Touch?
- CatalystDM, on 01/15/2008, -10/+62All cynicism aside, this strategy will likely work well to finally sell some damn Apple TVs. The idea isn't exactly revolutionary, but Apple is the company that can do this right and create a positive user experience.
- EvilFerret, on 01/15/2008, -8/+49That's how Apple rolls baby.
- Chewie67, on 01/15/2008, -5/+37You are NEVER going to see a DVR in an Apple TV. The whole point is to make it easy for you to buy Movies from iTunes. The DVR eliminates most of the need for iTunes.
Pepsi will never sell Coke glasses.
McDonalds will never sell Wendy's Hamburgers.
Addidas will never sell Nike T-Shirts. - matt.rubin, on 01/15/2008, -12/+41if by thats how apple rolls you mean charging 20 dollars for features the touch should have had when it came out then you are right
- MacEnvy, on 01/15/2008, -1/+28If you'd like to read about Kenya or the Sudan, there are lots of threads and discussions about it. This isn't one of them.
- nlinux, on 01/15/2008, -6/+32lol, This is so last year's software update for the Xbox 360.....but without divx support?
- airj1012, on 01/15/2008, -6/+29I'm still not a big fan of the 24 hour period to watch a rental. It should be 48 or 72 hours. It gives you a little more leeway without actual ownership of the movie. Just a thought.
- Aleman360, on 01/15/2008, -7/+29Good for people who don't have On Demand or Xbox 360s I guess. Count me out.
- gwhardyiv, on 01/15/2008, -0/+19When I want the latest news on African politics, I turn to Digg.
- br0ck, on 01/15/2008, -1/+18He's not talking about the Netflix DVD service, he's talking about the Netflix download service which allows unlimited PC viewing of 6000 titles. The field is actually growing crowded with Blockbuster and Best Buy launching a competitor, XBox Live allowing SD&HD downloads, Amazon's Unbox available on Tivos, and some cable companies offer a wide selection of SD&HD movie downloads.
- Genthree, on 01/15/2008, -0/+17You have to have a PC to use Netflix streaming.
- Dogtown7, on 01/15/2008, -4/+21Ok, for the detractors. Here are the reasons to get the AppleTV:
1. Download podcast videos and watch directly from couch
2. Watch Youtube videos from couch
3. View your Flickr pics from your couch
4. Convert all those illegal divx to mov format and sync to apple tv... wirelessly
5. Keep your home media center looking legit. Not wires running from your computer to back of a tv. No using a joystiq to navigate UI.
6. Actually enable other family members, spouse, girlfriend, kids to use AppleTV to listen to music/videos/podcast without your help. This is big... I hate having to do IT admin work at home. The interface is simple.
7. Available for $179 refurb/ $229 new < $349 xbox < $399 PS3 - Mudcrutch, on 01/15/2008, -2/+18well you can download the apple tv update.
- MalDON, on 01/15/2008, -2/+18"But it's a mac"
- ssinghal, on 01/15/2008, -4/+19You can't remember watching a movie twice? Not even the Matrix? or Star Wars? Come ON!
- Urkel, on 01/15/2008, -1/+15Thank god the AppleTV is considered a failure. If it was a success then this software update may have ended up being something we had to pay for.
Anyway, pricedrop is great and I highly recommend the product to those heavily invested in iTunes. But I think it's a real shame that this update doesn't include more codec support. - doctordbx, on 01/15/2008, -3/+17Good Question. The XBox360 has DiVx support *and* online Video purchase *and* IPTV coming very shortly.
You can also play games on them, plus there are way more in homes already. - clari0n, on 01/15/2008, -0/+13And what have you done today to help Kenya and Sudan, Enlighter?
- duckarrowtypes, on 01/15/2008, -2/+15The 360 is fine except that
1. The 360 sounds like a goddamn JET FIGHTER when it's on
2. The remote is a video game controller
3. The on-screen interface for browsing user videos, photos, music, etc. is an alphabetical list instead of a graphical display
4. The interface is better suited to more technical/young audiences (35+ likely need not apply) - Reno582, on 01/15/2008, -7/+18Divx? No Divx for YOU!
- CraigJ, on 01/15/2008, -5/+17"This is a definite loss for the consumer" How so? you still can buy it if you want to.
- doctordbx, on 01/15/2008, -3/+14And it can play games.
- nicepants, on 01/15/2008, -1/+12Netflix has HD rentals too....and they're not $5 each with a 24-hour viewing limit.
- timusca, on 01/15/2008, -1/+11No fair, you didn't give me a chance to guess.
- jostheller, on 01/15/2008, -2/+12sweet... a new mythTV frontend
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+11In another comment Enlighter says, "You know i wish i didn't have to read it, but all the apple and linux garbage just fills the whole screen."
Are you really ignorant of how to configure your digg account? You don't HAVE to read anything. Click My Profile->Settings->Customize Topics. Now uncheck everything you don't feel is "worthy" of being on the front page.
Uncheck Apple and you get no Apple news. Amazing! - matt.rubin, on 01/15/2008, -15/+25People act like its sliced bread when the 360 has been doing it for months now and its around the same price........
- EtherGnat, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9"guess who owns them..."
DivX is owned by DivX, Inc.. Xvid is free software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. What do I win? - gwhardyiv, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9Hmmmm.....is it the same person who didn't RTFA?
- rudy23, on 01/15/2008, -3/+12it better be
- JimmyIkon, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9So go by the ones you like.
- michaelb1, on 01/15/2008, -4/+13u
- P5ycHo, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9Please have your head examined.
VLC is not a format. - Topher06, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9So you pay $229 for the privaledge of paying $4.99 to rent a movie. Wow, that is great.
- jayhawk, on 01/15/2008, -4/+12i tried netflix. the thing is, when i feel like watching a movie, i watch it right then; it's not something i plan. i gave up netflix in favor of driving 6 blocks to blockbuster, but even that's a hassle. Apple now makes it available nearly instantly -- when i want to watch a movie. this is perfect for my lifestyle. for folks who are into stealing movies, they weren't going to buy a product anyway so Apple is hitting a good market with this product.
- WhiteIce89, on 01/15/2008, -5/+13The apple fanboys are having a field day on your ass.
- skubiszm, on 01/15/2008, -0/+8There are other places to rent movies online than itunes.
- gfnw, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9Here's hoping that this spurs Microsoft into putting some more effort into expanding the content selection avaliable on the 360 right now. It has the featureset down, mostly, but it needs the library behind it.
- annesjn, on 01/15/2008, -3/+10Seriously, buy a 360, it does more than just watch TV and stream and for about the same price!
- MalDON, on 01/15/2008, -3/+10I'd dump my current vista based media server for this if it could play any format. Honestly though, if I really wanted to rent an HD movie, I'd just use my 360 since the hardware is already there.
- cathpah, on 01/15/2008, -2/+9yep. weak sauce.
- Marvelboy, on 01/15/2008, -1/+8You can get HD too.
- corneliusJones, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7i would already have one if it played all the codecs i need
- deadbaby, on 01/15/2008, -3/+10Microsoft has every major movie studio on Live? Didn't know that.
