- ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39You realize Apple had a whole line of monitors called AppleVision, right?
- ObiusX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39I am certain if they do make a set-top box, it won't be called AppleVision, it's nowhere close to how Apple names products.
- ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I own all of the above, and FR can take my TiVo from my cold, dead hands.
/hugs his TiVo
//"It's okay, just ignore the bad people talking about you." - Kbennett, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Why is every electronic device today with any worth whatsoever given the "killer" moniker? TIVO is the iPod of the DVR world right now, and like the iPod, it isn't going to be overthrown any time soon. And just for the record I own neither an iPod nor a TIVO.
- DuneAdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17If it sync's with my video ipod, I'm already sold.
- doctornkul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Haven't they been predicting this since way before the video iPod?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Why is every electronic device today with any worth whatsoever given the "killer" moniker? "
Seriously. I'm getting a little tired of this "Killer" status. It's one of those PR buzzwords that needs to find its way out of digg, and fast. - dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I suppose this will be released along with the remake of the Newton, the video AirPort Express, and the iPhone?
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9quote blah blah blah.... They are simpler and easier to use blah blah blah unquote
Sorry to say, but both DirecTV and Dishnet DVRs are *HARDER* to use than Tivo - I used to install all 3 and well know how many people needed help. - BrianEnigma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ya' know, I could have sworn that I already have an Apple-based set-top box utilizing Front Row. It's called a "Mac Mini."

- DAC1138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7We're Americans! We don't get along...WE DESTROY!!! RAWR!
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6why? they have record sales. people are buying up $250 iPods left and right. And Apple's low-end laptops were always somewhat competivly priced.
Low-price is only a concern if the supply is exceeding or approaching market demand. But Apple has always been able to charge a premium for their product while keeping demand fairly high. - siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Apple should just go buy out Tivo. iTivo anyone.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well the comming IPTV revolution is going to make iTunes on a setop box (that has a dock for video iPod) a real winner. It fits in well with Apple's strategy.
- SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8HowAboutThemApplesVision
- Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The deadline IS NOT for HD, it's for DIGITAL signals.
HDTV is an option, but not a requirement for any broadcaster. They can still broadcast standard SDTV digitally and there's nothing we can do about it but turn the channel.
As for the deadline, this is like the 6th time they have 'finalized' the deadline. It was originally slated for 2005 I believe... - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You can find an analyst, expert, or industry insider who will take any position about any topic.

- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Someone wake me up when it's released. i'm sick of speculating.
- DuneAdx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Steve Jobs would never build his own competition.
- fowleryo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This isn't going to happen.
Look at the entire line of Apple products. How many of them rely on a 3rd party device? None that I can think of. Everything is either standalone, or meant to augment an already existing Apple product.
Apple's deal is a perfect user experience. If they don't have complete control, it's not worth it. This would fall into the category of something they can't completely control. - treed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6AppleVision has the same pronunciation pattern as TeleVision though. What sounds better: "It's not television, it's AppleVision." or "It's not television, it's MacVision." To me, the latter has kind of a stunted sound, while the former rolls off the tongue.
- jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4if there is no monthly subscription fee i'm all over it
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh, look! Yet another clueless prat on Wall Street pulls something out of his ass, and it gets reported as if it were for real.
Speculation isn't news, people!
-jcr - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I think and hope they wont do a set-top box at all. If they do what I think they're going to, they'll bring out a TV, they'll call it "Apple TV", it will have all the other business built-in including Front-Row 2.0. and an optical slot-load dvd/cd drive. It will come with the Apple Remote 2.0 too. AND Apple styling. An all in one masterpiece in 2 or 3 colours and 2 sizes. Job done!
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed. Apple and Tivo have the same high level of brand loyalty from users. Unfortunately, they also have the same low level of marketshare.
- astronaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Beacuse they're selling shows for $1.99 a pop, which is a different business model than an all you can record pvr.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everyone seems to want an APple device that includes a tuner. But why? Why is it not better to truly embrace IPTV and ditch tuning and schedules altogether?
Some people do not like the current quality of ITMS video. Yet that is a problem that is very simple for Apple to address by simply offering video with greater resolution. Why solve that problem by adding a complex tuning infrastructure to solve a problem that simply should no longer exist? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why does everything released that has functions in any way similar to another product, it becomes 'the next (insert product) killer'.
Is it really impossible anymore for products to coexist? Can't we all just...get along? - MondoMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to agree with OrangeTide. It makes sense with their strategy.
- DAC1138, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Analysts believe that Apple"
Believe? Doesnt that contradict your title "Apple to release" which assumes this has all been confirmed to be true? - MicrowavedH2o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...more like Dvorak is just a conspiracy enthusiast...
jk. - bdubya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wild Speculation Vision. Nothing to see here, please move along.
- fowleryo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't really understand what you're saying, but I'm assuming you mean all it will do is play the movies and music you download.. in which case; what are they going to play it on? A cinema display? An HDTV? A regular SDTV? There are so many possibilities that it would be impossible for them to guarantee a great picture.
- eggstylin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4go buy a tivo
- lepton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes. The reason Apple needs the TiVo tech is because they have the patents to generate suggestions, and use a database to keep track of your tastes in shows. TiVo does this fairly well, Apple could make it great.
- fitzfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2keep in mind it will need a big HD for all the movie downloads and im sure apple will not charge a subscription, and it will look AWESOME. id pay more like 300-500. Think about it u can watch all your iptv shows so easilyo n your tv now. no need to build a mythtvbox.
- vvaduva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple will kill TiVo when TiVo files for bankrupcy or when they get a constitutional ammendment to ban TiVos though. This is riduculous...just because Apple thinks about putting out a product it doesn't mean that product will kill whatever established competition is already in place. My DirecTiVo handles High Definition and can record 2 streams at once while watching a recorded show. It can do 4 different resolution and support Dolby Digital...with 500+ megs of space and DirecTV tuners built in.
Apple can have my TiVo remote when I die in my tv chair.... - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I highly doubt they would make a set top box, just not their thing. But then again who thought they would make an mp3 player back in the day?
- fitzfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no one can just tell you if it is real, but i assume it wouldnt be out for another year.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Their deal with Comcast is keeping them alive for the next few years. They're not dead yet. The value-adds like downloading to your iPod/PSP/Treo are going to keep their niche alive for some time to come. The STB guys don't wanna mess with that kind of stuff.
- probono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sure they had a product line called AppleVision - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19108-en
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll believe it when I see it. The pvr business is loaded with patent leechers. I'm pretty sure Creative (Gemstar) will do their best to sue Apple some more if they get into the PVR business.
- mbourgon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3> Unfortunately, they also have the same low level of marketshare.
Yup. Just like BMW, Mercedes, Sunfire Speakers, etc. - othermaciej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This headline is highly misleading. It claims Apple will release something, but this is just an analyst's wild guess: 'Josh Bernoff, an analyst at Forrester Research, has predicted just that. He expects that current and future Apple technology will cumulate in a device he calls "AppleVision"'.
In other words, he made up both the product and the name. Sad that this story got so many diggs based on fraud. - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FINALLY!!!!! I have been wanting to infect my TV with DRM for quite a while!! Thank you apple!
- Sonic84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4didn't Apple already try this with the "Apple Set top box" back in '95? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Interactive_Television_Box
