So did everyone in Redmond - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -15/+74All Apple bashers just crawled out of their holes...
- Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -13/+49My guess (dreaming I know...):
New iTunes Media Store will feature
DVD-quality movies $9.99 downloads via iTunes new built-in bittorrent feature
HD-quality movies $14.99 downloads via iTunes new built-in bittorrent feature
Optional and separate movie "rental" service for $14.99/month. Features some fancy pants dynamic DRM which allows 3 movies available for download at a time. When you're done watching you delete it and it frees up the next personalized DRM code. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31OK Apple, this is all I want:
Higher-resolution videos (320x240 doesn't cut it)
Cheaper TV-via-download programming ($1.99/episode doesn't cut it)
A way to stream my videos from my computer to any TV in my house (hooking a video iPod up to the TV - yep, you guessed it - doesn't cut it), or take them with me on an iPod or laptop
A way to control it all from anywhere in the house
I'm ready to kill my cable TV subscription, my TiVo subscription, and possibly my Netflix account. It's all up to you, Apple.
Oh, throw in some new iPod nanos for a little icing on the cake.
And if you really want my credit card out in a flash - that iPod cell phone would be nice too. This Sony T610 is begging to be thrown in the trash (which it's been doing since the day I bought the turd). - unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31Xerox?
- shaim2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Everybody's saying "movies on iTunes".
Sure.
But then Apple's strategy was "iTunes + iPod = $$$". So where's the other leg?
My guess: Home media center.
They have all the building blocks: Mac mini + Front Row (software for TV media interface) + remote control.
Add the iTunes movie store and you have the next step: convergence in the living room. - jackcheng, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21If this wireless device exists, "Showtime" could definitely be the name for it
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Funny, mobilehavoc, because in your -28 digg (and sinking) comment, I don't see anything about "marketing," "hype," or "innovation." Perhaps Digg readers just don't like immature, trollish nonsense?
Or just go ahead and continue to blame the "fanboys" (a tired and trite word anymore, don't you think?) for digging down your brilliant insights and interesting commentary. You are allowed to create your own reality I suppose... - Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25... showtime... I bet its a product, perhaps the media center apple pc? or maybe the widescreen video ipod?
- newbill123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@areophe said "I think they would have been better off announcing some of their new products at the WWDC, because so many people complain about being let down."
Developers have complained about too much puffery at the WWDeveloperConference. iPod, dotMac, iLife, and the retail stores may be doing well, but unless the message is "We're opening [this] for your applications, too" or "Look out, we're going to eat anyone's lunch in this market segment" developers don't want to hear it. The only other messages you heard at WWDC were variations on "This is the [right/wrong] area to develop" or "Apple is not going away soon."
Consumer events like MacWorld and Apple's special media events are where people want to hear about upgrades to Final Cut Pro, new iPod features, an iTunes movie store, a new expansion pack for iMovie, and so on. New API's? New version of XCode? New requirements that mean more work for their product? That's all developers want to hear.
Even if they were one day later, Apple appears to know that you shouldn't "mix" these two audiences.
Of course, the theme "It's Showtime" may suggest a grill product (like the parent poster suggested) but it won't be anything like one of those USB powered grills that made digg a few weeks ago that tried to cook a piece of bacon. This is what FIREWIRE is made for. :-) - nilobject, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26I love it when random internet dorks try to dictate to Apple what they should do.
"Dear Apple,
I know what's best for you. That's why I have several successful multi-billion-dollar corporations under my belt.
Sincerely,
Random Joe Schmoe." - Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18That'd (media rental system) be cool if I could stream it to my television (or maybe just connect a laptop to the TV, but streaming is better) =D
- phpfreak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13If they're going to introduce a movie download service, I wouldn't be surprised if they offered HD movies too. All current Mac models can decode 1080p HD video without a problem, and most of Apple's displays are high definition, either 1080p or 720p.
I wouldn't mind paying $15 for a HD or even DVD quality movie from iTunes, but if it's less quality than that... I'd think twice about buying anything. - kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11 Dont people realize how big an hd movie is. People will down load 3 or 4 hd movies and fill up there hard drive. Also an Ipod that could play hd would require such a large battery it would no longer be portable.
Try downloading an hd dvd movie it would take hours and hours. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"All my friends, family and the 300,000 Windows PCs at my job have never had a virus or spyware. I've started to realize that this whole Windows has viruses/spyware thing is probably the only tactic Jobs has left to hold on to Apple's puny market share." - mobilehavoc
What a complete load of crap. Who do you think my friends and family members call to come clean the spyware off their Windows computers? That's right, me. I have 3 extended family members and several friends whose computers were completely incapacitated by spyware. Starting with a fresh install of Windows was the only solution in some cases. I've told them I'm done cleaning their machines - if they want my help from now on they can go buy a Mac. I'm not subsidizing their cheap PC purchases with my free tech support.
You're living in an Apple-hating delusional state. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11> They're never going to pose any competition to Windows. 90%+
> of the world runs Windows PCs which with Vista will all come
> with the new Media Center built-in.
If that's the case then explain why the company who holds this magic key called Windows can't unseat Apple in the digital music market. By your logic, Apple could never have achieved the sort of success they've had with the iPod and iTunes. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15"Like I said, Apple is more hype than anything else..."
And apparently you're buying into the hype. Because here you are, yet again... - Bronstone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I hope Showtime also includes a video of Mobilehavoc getting his ass kicked.
- manicdvln, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I think they going to reveal the new ipod video, Movies on itunes and a new airport that can stream movies from your itunes to your TV like media extender for media center.
Seriously, no one wants to watch moves on their MAC/PC. - Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'd be shocked if that were true. Apple usually offers the "free-through-rebate" iPod back-to-school specials on the iPod models that are nearing the end of their shelf life. Not that the iPod you're getting is bad at all, just that it's a sure sign of the next generation peaking around the corner.
- spam4jan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8just remember kids, the last time Apple did one of these things we got the fancy ipod leather cases and the Hi-Fi-whatever-its-called boom-box thing.
Remember the backlash on that one, all Apple did is send out a little invitation and people were expecting the iPhone and video Ipods, Jesus being resurrected and naming Stevie J his successor. Then everyone was pissed because all they got was the hi-fi and some accessories. Here everyone is doing the exact thing.
Before everyone mods me down, I love my Mac and enjoy most of the things that Apple releases, but come on. It's fun to speculate and all, but for god's sake I don't want to see the dozen stories after the 12th about how Apple didn't do this or didn't do that. - sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!!!
Can't we have just one story regarding Apple or Windows posted that doesn't include 75% of the comments hammering one or the other? How about some intelligent, valueable commentary on the potential or the problems with something instead of all the fanboy rhetoric? - betobeto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9They are just getting ready for what's to come. The new PC battle will be on the home media center field, and Windows is packing a good punch with its Media Center where you will be able to manage, download and purchase music, videos and films from your TV. Apple will need to get their FrontRow concept beyond mere novelty and enhance iTunes integration if they want to put on some serious competition.
- meamog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@gabeN: They're all rumors at this point, but still - I've heard that the product would be an AirPort Express-type device for streaming the media experience from a computer to the TV - not a media center PC exactly, because the PC could be upgraded without disrupting the media center functionality and it'd be a hefty bit cheaper.
- Zminus10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Here's what I'd like to see:
- Desk and wall-mountable flat panel digital HDTV receiver / computer (new iMac?)
- Bluetooth keyboard with trackpad to use with your wall-mounted computer
- Includes Front Row with remote, of course
- iTunes movie sales or rentals added to the iTunes "Media" Store
- New widescreen iPod / iPhone to watch your movies "on the go"
- iPhone features iChat video-conferencing via built-in iSight
- iPhone Dock for integrated use with new wall-mounted computer
Am I asking for too much?
Zminus10 - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10iMovie is a product already, or did your coughing fit keep you from clarifying that?
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13I wonder if this article is setting a record fo the greatest number of buried comments. A lot of hate going back and forth.
- DoctorDuckey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Unless the bittorrent feature included the rumored feature where users can give up bandwidth in exchange for credit at the iTMS--or better yet, Apple Store...holy crap that would kick ass.
- enovak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm on the bandwagon for the Airport Express that can stream Video. I use mine now to listen to music through my receiver and would love to be able to watch video on my big screen without having to buy a media center.
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It makes a lot of sense for them to release the new video iPod at that time. Doing it before school starts is stupid because it could cut into sales of notebooks if people are concerned about buying the new iPod too. The weeks before Christmas are going to be dominated by the new video game consoles. There is a nice "buzz lull" between now and when the Wii launches, they would be smart to take advantage of that. A bunch of people will buy the new iPod right away, but it will give the rest of us time to budget it into our holiday spending.
The new wide-screen, touch-screen iPod will be accompanied by the launch of movies and games in the newly rebranded iTunes Media Store.
I think if they do have a device to stream to your TV, it will be a huge boost for sales to people without iPods. I know that they would rather sell more iPods than content if they had to choose, but selling more content exposes more people to iPod ads on iTMS and it also lowers the barrier for purchasing the new iPod since you will already have content for it. Not to mention that I would rather sit on a couch and watch TV than sit in a computer chair and watch a monitor.
Apple won't release a "media pc" because it just doesn't make any sense. They pride themselves on all of their computers being media savy. So by designating one as a "media pc" it pretty much brands the others as being "not media". It makes far more sense for them to release a stand-alone AirTunes device for video. - etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It only has Audio Out.
- Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree with not having to use bittorrent. I suppose the bandwidth should be part of the cost of the movie.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You might not get this message if your machine falls to a virus or some spyware, but I'm a mac user with a comment.
I don't care what you think about us. - ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@mobilehavac
Yeah, Im new to apple, and so is my whole family.
and my buddy's are starting to switch too.
Your just ignorant and wont accept the facts. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd say the theme "It's Showtime" gives some credibility to the rumour that they'll introduce a video-capable AirPort Express type device, and movie downloads. The argument that they realized people want to watch video on their TV and not a tiny iPod screen holds some water. In fact, the 5G iPod may have only played video so they would have an excuse to test the video downloads in iTunes without people wondering what they had up their sleeve. Now they have that working, they'll release the real thing they had in mind and follow up with a real iPod Video (6G or 7G) when they get that right.
That makes sense to me, but I'm also kind of hoping because an AE that does video has been a long-standing wish of mine. - sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Only has audio out plus I'm pretty sure it doesn't have any built in video decoding hardware. ;)
- althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@mobilhavoc
Because you don't understand what market share is. Read up on market population then you will be impressed with Apple. (market population for apple is about 22% currently) - DoctorDuckey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5*cough* mobilehavoc sucks the big one *cough*
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Or you'll get the old Nano on the very day the new one comes out.
- antitab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"unless Apple releases a file format that combines menus, special features, and full length HD content in a highly compressed file format"
That already exists (and, incidentally, in a format based on MOV) -- it's called MP4. It's little-known, but part 14 of the MPEG-4 spec (the part that defiines the .mp4 file format) has an entire language for scene interactivity called XMT-A. This use of the format hasn't really caught on, but it is entirely possible and there are tools that make use of it. See http://gpac.sourceforge.net/. - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would order this device in a second. I'd love to be able to stream my TV shows and movies from my iMac to my TV. I just hope it works with a component video input and does not require TDMI.
- Dharmamooch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I watch movies on my iMac in my bedroom quite often. Takes up a lot less space than a TV, is much prettier, has a gorgeous picture and is the same size screen as a 24" TV.
Works for me. - nilobject, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, I did the MacBook/iPod nano deal too. The MacBook's ship date slipped back to the 11th (which I believe will mean an update for me) but I got the nano the very next day.
Slipping ship dates are usually a good sign when there have been no widely-reported shortages of items. - Akram, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6quick question....why would you want to download the files on torrenting when you can have direct downloads at full speed all the time?
- MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Movie downloads in 1080p would require huge amounts of bandwidth. HDNet used to have some 720p content for download. I downloaded one about the space shuttle. It was 20-30mins and 1.5 Gigs. If Apple plans to do HD movies I hope they have a botnet ready to torrent them.
- Yashu, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14"showtime"
This must be apple's entry into soft core porn. - wabbitman1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Lovers or hates..everyone is waiting and no matter what Apple does they will make some serious $$$!!
- chiptinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Bittorrent downloading is a big pipedream. I.e. Apple didn't invent it, I am sure they won't want to use someone else's technology within the ITMS environment. Also, I doubt Bittorent downloading will work nicely with Apple's DRM. "
Bittorrent downloading is certainly possible, it would pose no threat to apple's DRM. I don't know about the licensing and such, but with the cash that Apple's got, anything's possible.
"Anyways, I also doubt that Apple is actually allowing for downloadable HD movies, at most I would hope that HD support would be for streaming only. There is no point in showing an HD movie on an iPod (ANY iPod, even the upcoming true video one). The file size for any HD movie would be over 4gb using quicktime HD."
To burn off to blu-ray, to put onto an iPod so that you can output to an HDTV, to watch on your computer, etc.. There's a million reasons why people could use downloadable HD movies. 4gb isn't that much anymore, not with 120gb 1.8" hard drives on the horizon.
"I am not expecting anything truely revolutionary here. I mean, movies WILL be offered through iTunes, as to the hows, I think it will be pretty lackluster (low res iPod movies for download, high rez for streaming). AirTunes that can stream video would be a complete waste of time without any true on-screen navigation or browsing capabilities, and I doubt Apple will release a set top box that connects to iTunes and displays UI on your television. My guess is that Apple just "enhanced" their AirTunes product to stream video, which is on par with Apple trickling out "innovations" by offering cheap tweaks and alternatives to existing technology, rather then truely coming out with something completely new. If anything, I would hope for an iPod with WiFi access that can connect both to iTunes AND act as a set top box/ media server, but then that is a big pipe dream!"
iPod with wifi, I wouldn't bet on. Too many issues from lack of functionality to battery life. Maybe 7Gs? Anyway, adding a simple IR jack to the Airport Express, allowing you to use your apple remote to control your computer from your living room is certainly a possibility. - pierrefilms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mobilehavac
Perhaps the switch ads don't have an effect on you per-say, but Apple has already said that 50% of all people buying new Macs are new to them. So we definitely are gaining marketshare.
inkswamp is right anyway. People buy iPods that work with iTunes even though there are tons of players that work with Windows' built-in Windows Media Player. Same could be said when looking at a potential media center. In other words:
90% of the world uses Windows on their PCs yet [the majority] use iPod & iTunes for their digital music.
or
90% of the world uses Windows on their PCs yet [the majority] use Mac & iTunes (not sure what the combo will be) for their digital media center.
Believe me, Mac OS X isn't going anywhere...at least not until Mac OS XI. - pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5No, but I do: http://www.vgb.no/8003
