- Chewie67, on 10/30/2007, -2/+29I don't care if you change the look, please just release these machines before year end. My company will be making purchases by December 31st and we can't wait till MacWorld or Uncle Sam will take 15% of what is sitting in the bank account.
PLEASE Apple, release these machines before year end. - daldredge, on 10/19/2007, -0/+20Buy Apple gift cards.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/19/2007, -3/+10That's not what she said.
- Mactrekr, on 10/24/2007, -1/+8Can't wait! Faster is ALWAYS better
- tbenathan, on 10/19/2007, -2/+8You really want to buy a Mac Pro for gaming? Seriously? Get yourself a PS3, a 360, and a Wii. Together with a slew of games for each system, it'll still be less than half the price.
- kingkilr, on 10/20/2007, -2/+8Just my techy side showing itself, the chips are *not* Penryn, Penryn is a mobile chip, they would be Wolfdale or Yorkfield, the desktop/server version of the core.
- zeejay, on 10/19/2007, -0/+6It's not a game console you put under a tree, it's a $4K workstation, and many companies (and government agencies) have to spend budget before year-end, or it's lost.
- nate886, on 10/18/2007, -0/+5And that is a Mac MINI how?
- Ireland, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5A PS3? An iPhone? What? Tell us!!!?
- Firehed, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5Not sure why this is being buried. The Mac Pro is very expensive, and is NOT intended as a gaming machine. It's intended as a high-end workstation where you need crazy processing power but your graphics card often doesn't matter much (think Photoshop, which last I was aware isn't GPU-accelerated). Of course if you're doing video rendering or CAD design or something that can take advantage of the horsepower, you can upgrade the card. But no machine titled "Pro" anything is meant for gaming - it's meant for professional work.
- stalefries, on 10/19/2007, -1/+6Next time, check here: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
- benitojuarez, on 10/21/2007, -1/+5wtf penryn is ready already? i thought it wasnt coming out until next year, thats why i said ***** it and spent 2 grand on top of the line parts last month.
*cuts wrists. - surfing, on 10/18/2007, -1/+5Apples does plan to update Christmas.
- dubbleenerd, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4actually, no rumors on an apple product are even more reason to hold off the purchase :P
- Firehed, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Mr. Laporte, is that you?
- burke, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Actually, Penryn is the first real implementation of the biggest breakthrough in transistor technology since the 60s. It should be MUCH cooler and hence more efficient than previous chips, due to a new compound that reduces quantum tunneling across the substrate when the transistor is off.
EDIT: Oh, and 45nm. - Firehed, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Buy third-party RAM from Newegg or somewhere similar. It's SO much cheaper than Apple's, and they sell Apple-certified stuff. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the same RAM, just a different person putting it in the box. Can't argue with the graphics card, although many people who actually need a MP wouldn't get that much use out of it. Or rather, it depends what they're doing - some need the best they can get, and some can use whatever's installed without it making any difference. They offer a hardware RAID card, although it's wickedly overpriced. I wouldn't argue with a black case, but know that black anodized aluminum really lets scratches show up if you don't handle it as nicely as you should - natural silver color tends to hide them very well (since you're just exposing more natural silver).
- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Rule of thumb, by the time your ready to buy an apple product, don't it will be outdated in a month
- TedTschopp, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3Christmas 2.0 now with less....
- moofer, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3When the new one comes out, your current machine won't suddenly run slower. Enjoy the machine for what it is - A bad-ass. There will always be newer/faster machines on the horizon. That doesn't make yours any less-capable.
- jkoke, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Well, maybe if you treat him really nice...
- soopafly, on 10/19/2007, -1/+3That's the stupidest thing I've read all day.
- Rickard, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2I don't know why you're defending Apple here. The fact remains, the fastest video card you can buy for a Mac Pro is almost two years old. There's nothing stopping Apple from just slapping on their custom BIOS on any of the modern video cards from nVidia or ATI and selling them at a premium for the Mac Pro.
- drtyrell, on 10/19/2007, -1/+3I have been waiting since 2003 for this machine. My company has the money, and we're ready to buy.
You make it, I buy it! - Vermifax, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Hmmm, no. You are better off with a regular PC. I'm a career professional so, I'll need my Mac Pro.
- punkass1977, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2That's a really amusing idea...does anyone see any downsides from a tax point of view?
- techweenie1, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2How are they trash? They maybe expensive, but trash?
- Vermifax, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Don't worry. My sarc radar is in perfect condition.
- burke, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Well obviously you use Mandatory Access Controls, if you're posting on the internet.
- tdhurst, on 10/19/2007, -3/+5Damnit, no glossy screens! They're terrible!
- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2I had to carry one up 3 floors on a spiral staircase, but the good thing with it being so heavy is that I don't have to worry about anyone stealing it so I save a couple of hundred in insurance.
- toetagger, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2If you feel that way you can return it.
- Kappa00, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Why did you reply to Mactrekr?
- MajorMauser, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1I wish Apple would really do something about the Games aspect of OS X but when this thing comes out they better Support more cards than the pathetic selection they have now.... I will not be using OS X for Gaming ... since Leopard supports Bootcamp I will install Vista and do my gaming there...There are just many more Games on Windows... but I will have OS X to go back to when I need to do work. I want an NVIDIA Card so I can run DX10 software. I want this machine to be the best on both ends OS X and Windows.. Put an 8800 card as an option Apple.
- techweenie1, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1okay okay, a bj
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1what? 4 750GB RAID drives and two optical drives aren't enough?
- iFungus, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1You actually think I'm serious?
- samuel514, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1brushed aluminum is sleek !
- Firehed, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Most? Most people* love glossy. It does look much better. It's just not especially well-suited to some environments, since it's of course quite reflective as well.
*normal people, not graphics designers and mom's basement-dwellers. - blorc, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2Glossy defeats the whole purpose of the "Pro" part. It throws off the color. I would be extremely surprised if Apple ever made a standalone monitor with a glossy screen.
- FredSanford, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1The tax code states that the equipment needs to be put into service before the end of the year. Buying a gift card wouldn't be the same. It's not even in the same category of expense. Computers are capital expenditures.
I am NOT an accountant, but I spend a lot of time talking with mine. - shawnz, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1because it's smaller than a mac pro?
- Firehed, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2So is my 7900-something, which is along the same lines performance-wise as the X1900. And it's also very roughly equivalent to an 8600, which is what's in my MBP. It doesn't seem to have trouble at the native 1440x900 res, though I can't go insane with extra effects in the very latest stuff.
- SteveMax, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1"Mandatory graphics card upgrades"? That isn't a gaming machine. The 7300 can drive any possible display configuration (except for 2 30' monitors). Unless you absolutely need 2x30', or you work with 3D (which is not the sole focus of the Mac Pro), you need no upgrades.
- samuel514, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1You can change the processor at that time I think, but like other says, enjoy your bad ass computer :)
- ejde, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Spoken like someone who has never used a Mac.
- Firehed, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Actually, I don't think you can redeem gift cards on iTunes purchases, only actual iTunes gift cards (could be wrong there, but I know some people were bitching about something to that general effect when the iPhone rebate thing happened).
- Yoweigh, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1How is this news? Is anyone surprised that Apple would upgrade to the latest Intel chips once they're available?
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1douche, sse4 includes sse4.2, as sse4 is split into TWO parts (sse4.1, which penryn supports and sse4.2, which nehalem supports). check your facts, freak!
- WardC, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1every kid this Christmas is begging Santa for an octa-processor 3.2GHz Penryn Mac Pro with 32GB of RAM - APPLE MUST GET THEM OUT BY CHRISTMAS! - unlikely, lol, this is the BigMac secret for Macworld SF '08
