- abediz, on 06/27/2008, -5/+66now I can control airtunes anywhere in the house!
- virtualball, on 06/27/2008, -2/+53Cool, I'm down for any free app, especially a functional one! :)
- Adisah, on 06/27/2008, -6/+53This will make up for my macbook not coming with an apple remote.
- virtualball, on 06/27/2008, -3/+27It's probably like the AppleTV, you probably need to type confirmation numbers. Kind of like pairing a Bluetooth phone to a computer.
- virtualball, on 06/27/2008, -4/+24....congratulations?
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -2/+19Correct me if I'm wrong but I think later iterations of the Macbook which have more RAM, bigger HDD and faster CPUs scrapped the remote. Pretty poor show from Apple if you ask me. Price has come down in recent times but surely they could still include the remote..
- BossKey, on 06/27/2008, -0/+15Might not be the most ridiculous example, actually. Think about the exorbitant amount of technology involved in putting up a simple, unformatted text post on Digg (computer, networking equipment, farm of redundant servers...)
By the way...
"vs Turning up your computer speakers" - I live in a multi-unit building, it's more neighborly to send a lower volume to more speakers distributed throughout my rooms
"vs Running a wire (they're not that hard to conceal!) from computer to amp" - My computer is a wireless laptop, often some distance from the stereo
"vs CD changer?" It only holds 5 CDs at a time... - necramar, on 06/27/2008, -2/+16http://code.google.com/p/telekinesis/
- benologist, on 06/27/2008, -2/+13All you need now is for Apple to furnish you with a wife, a babysitter, and a dick.
- Niightwitch, on 06/27/2008, -3/+14Which do you consider to be your ideal woman - your right hand or your left hand?
- SuperSunny, on 06/27/2008, -1/+12Uh, we're not rewarding Apple. I don't see any magical trophies going around. I could do this on any device, it's already been on the iPhone and iPod touch in various different forms. This is just an official release from Apple, that's the difference. Key phrase here is: It's already been on the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Do you understand that? If you don't, go back into your little marketing ***** hole and go praise your damn Ericsson. Not that I'm trying to be bias, I own an Ericsson and I love it. I just don't go around pretending I'm the ***** talking about how my product has x feature and your product added x feature but mine already had it so mine is better. This article states that Apple is offering a Remote Control App for the iPhone and iPod touch, to make music easier to control while you're moving around the house or away from your computer, and you don't have an Apple Remote. It has NOTHING to do with any other product that can control music. - meatmcguffin, on 06/27/2008, -2/+13Wires? Are you a thawed caveman?
- tapo, on 06/27/2008, -1/+12It's funny how we use the most complicated technology to perform the simplest tasks. A while ago, I was using my two-way satellite internet connection to play Starcraft on Battle.net, and the whole time I felt I was wasting a century of human technological development.
By the way, I don't recommend it. Lag is ***** awful when you're sending packets to space and back. - WhatsUpWithJack, on 06/27/2008, -0/+10This would be sick.... if I had speakers running through my house.
- 11Christine, on 06/27/2008, -3/+12I wish there was also an app to control my TV and garage doors =)
- Gbobrt4, on 06/27/2008, -3/+12I can see it now.....I have the lights lowered in the bedroom, there is wine and the fireplace is going. My ideal women is laying in bed. I wip-out my iTunes remote and throw on some Kenny G.
/Dugg - snassiri, on 06/27/2008, -1/+10When your little Ericsson has an easy to use, multi-touch interface, media functions that are more than an add on, some of the best mobile apps available, a real internet browser, and a world-class music and media store to back it up, then you can talk *****.
But your one little nifty feature that I could get a hack for anywaydoesn't mean much when you add it all up in real world use. - Xonay, on 06/27/2008, -2/+10No if it would only control my AppleTV I would be happy!
- tr0y85, on 06/27/2008, -1/+9Let the unpaired-mac apartment complex sabotaging begin.
- bpapa, on 06/27/2008, -5/+13Interested to see how permission to run as a remote is granted. Can I just walk into my buddy's house, whip out my iPhone, and start messing around with his iTunes?
- TexasShiv, on 06/27/2008, -7/+14I have an apple remote and I haven't used it once...
- thebrinkman, on 06/27/2008, -1/+8Finally I can stare blankly at milkdrop when i'm out of the house.
- pamon, on 06/27/2008, -3/+10july 11th just be here already... gimme 3G and new toys to play with.... thanks... applefanboy
- LoudMusic, on 06/27/2008, -1/+8Some how I have less issue with Battle.net over satellite feed than I do with remote controlling one device to remote control another device.
That said, since I already have all the necessary hardware and the software is slated to be free, I'll probably use it. But I won't be happy about it! (that's a lie, it's going to be cool as *****. I just wouldn't have paid for it. and that's no lie) - luchid, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7@LoudMusic
Are you seriously suggesting we use a friggin CD changer in 2008? And your excuse of saying it has playlists is awful. Programming that thing to use playlists is almost as painless as gouging your eyes out with a teaspoon.
"Awful lot of hardware"? Really? A computer that has the Library and iTunes running with the music library in it, Airport Express connected to the remote sound system and an iPhone to control it, it's simple. How else would you do it?
Just because you have a guetto setup with wires running all over the place doesn't mean everyone should. - LoudMusic, on 06/27/2008, -1/+8That's not quite how AirTunes works, so I would imagine it'll be passworded or keyed or some such. The AppleTV displays a number on the screen and you have to type it in on the computer you want to attach to it. Or vise versa, I can't remember. That way you have to be in control of both machines in order to make them talk to each other.
- cgruber, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Left is like someone else is in charge.
- Assezdefromage, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7The point is now sort of moot if you're a student. Would you rather you got a free 8GB iPod Touch, or an Apple Remote?
- glabbage, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6Signal is a very cool app I found a couple of months ago which isn't free... but added some much needed functionality to my setup (including album art and the ability to rate songs).
http://www.alloysoft.com/ - BetterOffEd, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6A CD-changer is just *****' ridiculous.
I wouldn't mind running wires so much if I could figure out how to get the computer sound system to play while the audio out is playing? (because when I plug in the headphone jack, the system goes off.
Any recommendations? - coldfusion1970, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6You've made an elementary mistake in assuming we would buy those products JUST for that feature.
I already own a iPod touch, Intel iMac and Airport Express, so i will just advantage of this new feature without any further outlay. - tech1987, on 06/27/2008, -1/+6I bought the newest macbook, defiently no remote, I was disappointed even though I might have never used it.
- coldfusion1970, on 06/27/2008, -1/+6I use mine every day with my iMac.
- quomen, on 06/27/2008, -2/+7Don't freeze Skittles. They can chip your teeth.
- ThrillerJesus, on 06/27/2008, -2/+7I'm a fan of the Apple remote. Hook the MacBook up to the LCD TV and watch video podcasts like they were television shows. TED Talks, baby.
- darfvader, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4"Ok, that's not fair. But think about the exorbitant amount of technology being employed here ... to make sound.
iPhone
Computer with iTunes
Airport Express
Wi-Fi network
Audio amp with speakers attached (presumable better than the ones on the computer)"
So what? I already have the kit which also fulfils many many other roles. This small software updates adds extra capability to the stuff I already own. I wouldn't go and buy it all just for the sake of streaming music. - Angostura, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4Let's see.
Apple market capitalisation= $148bn
Microsoft total current assets = $41bn.
So... no. - Rolamoto, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4Apple is a publicly held company. Many people own them.
- MonumentMan, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4this is freaking awesome. seriously. i use itunes for playback on my home stereo, and the ability to change tunes from my iphone is awesome!
- coldfusion1970, on 06/27/2008, -2/+6They couldnt even afford to buy Yahoo without loans.
- srt4b, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4I see 4?
- GinaJuice, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Enough for the occasional listen at a relative/friend's house. Come on, are there people who would reject this as a feature? Its not like the line-out or headphone jack has to stop working to make this possible. There's already a last.fm app for jailbroken ipods/iphones, which requires constant streaming, and battery life isn't that bad.
- bluemath, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4What kind of battery life do you expect with that scenario?
- spony99, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3but can i use it as a remote for my tv
- dclowd9901, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3How funny. I never even use the one that came with my Macbook Pro. I promise you guys aren't missing much...
- coldfusion1970, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Luckily Mac OS X has good/speedy 'always on' virtual memory.
- imcquill, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4Probably it can since the apple tv can work as an airport express.
- GinaJuice, on 06/27/2008, -2/+5I'd be nice if we can just get streaming straight from the iPod/iPhone to an AirPort express, all the hardware needed is already there...
Oh and wireless syncing please! - DarkoKun, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I have never had the need to use it with my macbook.
- Capta1nA, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Dugg down for Kenny G.
