- The_Ox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The time is technically incorrect... it should be 12:37AM on the 23rd, not PM.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Here's a quote from the upcoming keynote address from Steve Jobs...
"Recently on our iTunes music store we've just sold over A BILLION SONGS(pause)... A Billion Songs(pause)... a billion songs(pause)... {slight inaudible whispers as steve once again says 'a billion songs' in his head}"
Cue insane clapping from the audience.
We need Carl Sagan here to say "billion" - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My iTunes bill was $52.47 this month, Congrats Apple!!!!!
- lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sadly, it was a Toby Keith song.
- nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think Tom Tucker from Family Guy says it best:
"It's true. The final scroll has been recovered.
The lucky recipient has declined to be interviewed for safety reasons.
But I'm sure you're all with me when I say, 'Congratulations, you son of a bitch.'" - AndreMA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It will be a while before they announce the winners. I won one of the 100,000-interval iPod Minis in the 500-million contest; they emailed me a PDF to verify eligibility and get SSN (for tax purposes, presumably).
Strangely, my name never appeared on the list of all the winners they announced, but they did (after a bit of a delay - until after the Nano was introduced, which irritated me a bit) send the iPod and $50 song card in time - it was about 8-10 weeks, I think. - Latentk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo were smart, they'd work with Apple and integrate iTunes into their products instead of attempting to create something of their own and compete with a industry Apple has strictly wound around their finger.
Congrats Apple, thats a pretty solid accomplishment. - MicHalpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought 10 songs and 2 videos during this time;-)
videos don't count - twilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Congratulations iTunes, and Apple!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can trade them to me for my iPod invisa
- Fraghappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, there were no duplicates when I posted, now there are several.
- plum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this one survived from about ten dupes.
- Tmacman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"-you can only send those songs boughten from the store to 5 iPods some ***** that they did."
Actually @nismodrift, Apple's limit for authorization is 5 computers. iPods don't have to be authorized, so you can have as many as you want (or can afford.)
http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/musicstore/authorization/ - gumby013, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am expecting a call from Steve any second.
- Ghazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"no 12:37pm"
12:37 PM Eastern on February 23rd, 2006 = Future still! - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want to make a billion dollars selling something free! anyone want to buy some bottled water? Sure you can get it for free, but mine can only be consumed by up to 3 registered people from overpriced bottles that i sell. dont worry though, they bottles are white with shades of grey, so everyone will see how cool you are.

umm dude go watch the Cosmos series, he says it several times. - crispytown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL... that shows apple. They were saying it would happen on the 22nd. LOL I guess they need better guesses on this stuff.
Thanks everyone for not buying the song till the 23rd. TY - manoftheisland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"You can trade them to me for my iPod invisa"
lol great line... kind of a throw away story, but i digg anyway b/c its a billion... yeah dumb reason i know - H_o_p_s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In addition, a scholarship will be created by Apple in the name of the Grand Prize winner to a world renowned music institution to be selected by Apple. The scholarship recipient shall receive four (4) years of tuition to a university-level program at the music department of the selected institution. The Grand Prize winner shall not be eligible to receive the scholarship or participate in determining the scholarship recipient. The scholarship shall have no monetary value to the Grand Prize winner."
That's pretty cool too... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo were smart, they'd work with Apple and integrate iTunes into their products instead of attempting to create something of their own"
Exactly how would this be smart profit wise or benefit the end user? Competition brings prices down and quality up. - ralphmalph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea, i'll digg it.
- willij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool. but it has a 404 error on it. Thanks for the digg.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, whoever downloaded the billionth song is a lucky little bastard... TEN iPods? Holy cripes.
- OpToMyZo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what the billionth song title was?
Probably Ted Nugent; Cat Scratch Fever
Cause like thats the best song in the worald'. - cualexander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In related news, iTunes contest winner can't afford to pay taxes on his prize....
Seriously, 10 60gb iPods($4,000), 20"iMac($1619), $10000 iTunes gift card....$15,619 in income there. Pretty much a minimum of $1500 added to your taxes, and thats at the minimum 10% bracket. Could go up to about $5000 or so.
I'd sell a few iPods so I could pay the taxes...
A man actually turned down a bunch of free airline tickets he won because he wouldn't be able to afford the taxes on the cash value of the final prize.
Even in luck, the IRS still gets theirs. - ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn i knew i should have bought a song yesterday at 12:56! ARGH!
oh well. - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So that's a billion songs for the Beatles to take their cut from next month...
- DarthPilatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wouldn't you just love it if the Billionth song purchased was a Kenny Rogers song...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0michalfin^^
like u said, wut if an "alternate entry form" won...?
last time, they made a big deal over the winning person, and put up the winning song...
bummer if they had to say "Winning song: Alternate free entry form" - mccoma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@darthpilatus
we do not diss the Gambler and as a matter of fact I hope it was since, well, uhm.......
:) - Jonsey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In addition, a scholarship will be created by Apple in the name of the Grand Prize winner to a world renowned music institution to be selected by Apple. That's pretty cool too. - jamba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty good considering that that time doesn't occur for two more hours. Nice job, submitter.
- AndreMA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...and oh yeah... I won on a free entry; no purchase. The list of 100 winners they released listed the song concerned but didn't say if it was an actual purchase or a free entry. Free entries in that contest were done by recommending a song to a "friend" with an email address at Apple that collected the entries. I think they changed the method this time around - and limited it to 25 per day per user.

"he still a member, look at the top user section . and to your comment at the beginning refering to McDonalds. People are excited about this so much, becase the first that can relate to "win" is free. And people like free things."
Well, it's just that I haven't seen any posts from him lately. And as far as the free stuff goes. I realize people like free stuff. It just seems that most people don't know, or simply choose to ignore the fact that one would have less chance of winning this than most lotteries. It just seems like a lot of unneceassary hype to me. But then again, I don't use iTunes (I don't like DRM and am too lazy to burn/rerip and then re-enter all the tag info) so i guess this really has no impact on my life. But still, I always thought it was interesting to see how worked up people got over the smallest chance they could win free stuff. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My god, I hope I win. I spent over $500 in my history of all downloads. I deserve it!
- Tmacman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lets see how this works...
The winner gets 10 60 gig iPods, and then fills them with the 10,101 songs from the gift card, and then gives the iPods away to friends with the copied songs.
Hummm, I smell a RIAA lawsuit! - davotoast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i bought an album at 12:34 am.
doh, so close. - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is it that as of about 8:30PM PST it was still counting up to 1Billion?
- NismoDrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Tmacman
-you can only send those songs boughten from the store to 5 iPods some ***** that they did.
Eitherway maybe they should do the millionth video download thing or billionth video download thing whichever one I hope they have another thing like this I want to win soo bad!! - Progression, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I predict that the winner will sell off the 10,000 dollar gift card for 5,000 on ebay along with 9 of the 10 ipods.
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Somehow I think that that number pales in comparison to the number of less-than-legitimately downloaded songs
;-) - ihybridora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to MonkeyFit: he still a member, look at the top user section . and to your comment at the beginning refering to McDonalds. People are excited about this so much, becase the first that can relate to "win" is free. And people like free things.
