- eatrains, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2I just had this happen to me. Parts of the screen would randomly go purple and everything would freeze, requiring a hard restart. I was about a month out of the complimentary warranty, but fortunately I'd gotten AppleCare. They replaced my logic board and a few other things. Within days, a problem with the power management unit popped up, so I had to send it in again. They replaced the logic board again and just about every temperature sensor in the thing. All in all, about a month without my computer. Everything seems to be fine, for now. *knocks crossed fingers on wood*
- antoni, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1My Macbook Pro with a 8600M GT CPU has this manufacturing problem and is currently under repair. Intially, I had to go through a long process with Apple Care in order for them to agree to repair it with no cost since it started failing 2 months after the one year warranty.
The Apple tech called me the other day and apparently they're redesigning some aspects of the logic board or the GPU to make sure that the new logic boards which are put in are not faulty (because people were getting replacements but ended up having the same problems since another faulty Nvidia GPU was put in).
Nvidia should really step up, accept that their mobile 8600's are faulty and pay the cost to fix it.
No happy Jan with Nvidia. - PCouch, on 10/10/2008, -3/+2I've had this problem three times. Each instance Apple replaced the motherboard which would have been at $1300 repair had I not had AppleCare. The last fix was just last week. Hopefully I got one of the new graphics chipsets that won't burn out when overheated.
At least Apple is now admitting this and the Genius Bar can actually admit the problem exist other than a wink and a nod. - Hosalabad, on 10/10/2008, -3/+1I think this same manufacturing problem by Nvidia was causing Dell XPS laptops to be delayed in assembly for built to order customers by 3-4 weeks.
