- frogstik, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21It's ***** like you that make me glad I'm not a Mac Genius anymore.
- tjmasco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15This has already worked on my friend's Macbook which has just recently suffered from the shutdowns. If everything else related to this fix works well, I'd say that lawsuit just got shot down - in a good way.
However, if this "fix" is simply ignoring the symptoms that cause the problem, shame on you, Apple. - frogstik, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20cursing out those guys made it work better didn't it? they can only do what apple tells them to do, verbally beating down two people who have no control over your problem does no good...
- wheezl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17the same cannot be said of your adverbs.
- tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Wow. I wasn't even having the random shut downs and this fixed my problem.
My MacBook seemed to have some sort of logic issue where it would power on only like 30% of the time without turning off after five seconds. It was also incapable of waking up from sleep.
I even had the box Apple sent me to ship my laptop in for repair. Now I don't need to do that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Haha. I guess that is one way to look at it. But we don't really know that yet. There is that class action suit brewing, so maybe they wanted to halt that progression and this is a tactic to do so. We'll see if people continue to report the problem.
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11muleking,
Those "Mall Employees" are certified apple techs. I believe they have portable, desktop and Macosx certs.
How many certs do you have?
Just because their Apple Store is in a mall doesnt make them "Mall Employees"
What do you do? Compusa ? BestBuy ? Probably something like that... - RainRacer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16As an Apple Tech, I can confirm that this is simply ignoring a bigger issue. I have seen first hand dozens and dozens of MacBooks with the thermal sensor wires melted to the side of the heatsink. Though this may be a nice temporary fix to get people up and running, I really hope that Apple is not encouraging this as true fix.
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19@Yarnage
Because he starts with unfounded speculation then concludes as if it's fact. Kinda like Rush Limbaugh. - frogstik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9that's unfortunate, because at my old store we were all in our late 20's or 30's, most have college degrees and were just tired of our IS&T cubical jobs...
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I just installed it. So far so good. I only experienced the bizarre shut down once, but this will add peace of mind.
Now if there could only be a firmware update for my slowly darkening case stains... - zeejay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Handsoap and the occasional napkin after a meal might be a start.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9If it was fixed by a firmware update how it's not a hardware problem sweetie.
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5so I guess the whole caviat at the beginning of my comment that says "here's what i'm thinking" doesn't make it obvious enough that my post was only my opinion and educated speculation about what is going on?
Here's the deal. The issue has pretty much been factually pegged on the heatsink, right (people have cracked open their MacBooks and seen how the heatsinks are expanding and short-circuiting the SMC probe). So, if Apple didn't want to make thousands of hardware replacements, wouldn't it make sense for them to make a firmware update that ignores the probe if it shows signs of having shorted?
The problem of course is that those probes are there for a reason: to detect overheating. If the software is ignoring them when they short-circuit, then your ability to detect true overheat situations would be degraded (and we all know these puppies can get hot!)
Who knows, maybe despite a lot of good people's efforts, it has been decided by Apple that it really is a software bug and not a hardware design issue, and in that case I'd be wrong. But it would be nice if Apple explained a bit more of how their update solved the problem. - chrisrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good thing too, was JUST going to drop my MacBook in for the 3rd time to the Apple shop - now it seems I won't have to!
- shieldss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was (am) having the exact same problem that cropped up in the past week or two: it would turn on for about 5 seconds, then turn off. Hopefully this update has fixed it.
- linuxinsidev2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Agreed, i'm sending my macbook in for service soon, if they try to tell me that the update will fix it, i'm gonna remind them of the melted wires.
- frogstik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It looks like this is fixing the issue. When a customer brought a MacBook to the Genius Bar for fixing, the solution from Apple was to replace the Heatsink or Logic Board, or both... and having 10.4.8 and the firmware 1.0 installed.
I've got a MacBook and have yet to have an issue... and I run mine pretty hard (playing WOW and editing music/video) - frogstik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've noticed on the new heatsinks the connectors and the cables are a little varied than the ones that came inside the MacBook - Also the thermal pads on the bottom of them are much thinner than the inital slathering of thermal paste on the original ones too.
- SpoBo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3RainRacer ... same here. I'm not updating since I would like to know when my macBook turns into a dangerous piece of equipment. That forced shutdown is there for a reason and it's not funny when Apple suddenly decides that's not really needed :/
- omniatlas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mine is in the shop right now (2nd damn time) getting a new heatsink and logic board. Does this really work?
- carniv0re, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why is RainRacer getting dugg down? His post seems legitimate enough to me and he is merely positing the possibility that Apple may be ignoring the larger issue.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had this same issue with my 17 in PB G4 (ppc) even though its not noted that it happened to this model, i know for several it did. I was almost to the point of buying the over priced protection plan and sending it off to apple, when, after an apple update, it just began to work correctly again, and has never gave me an issue since *crosses fingers* but, i was sad that apple took so long to reconize this as an issue, it was on the apple forums for a very long time, over a 1000 views for just 1 post about it.
- JuyLe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even if I didn't have random shutdown before, I tried some extreme setup, and it doesn't shutdown anymore (ffmpegx encoding, safari freezing, xtorrent). Great update i guess !
- RainRacer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For myself, I don't think I will even install this update. I would like to know when my machine is melting on the inside.
To linuxinsidev2, I don't know why you dugg down. I highly recommend anyone who has this problem insist on getting a new heatsink. - finnegan121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my macbook had the problem. did anyone else develop it in the last 2 weeks or so? I hope this fixes it.
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6While I do have to agree that you sound like an *****, you are right. The Mac Geniuses are just college kids who act like jerks just because they have the surname "Genius" At least in my city...
- MrBubble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if my computer is fixed yet, but so far the fan is much more quiet.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41. Macs are no longer more expensive.
2. Apple are actually FIXING the issue instead of ignoring it. - BrickSprickly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've never had a random shutdown on my blackbook. I'm on my third logic board, though, for various other reasons (i.e. the speaker going out and then my bluetooth failing intermittenly).
What I'm wondering is if anyone has noticed any other specific benefits to the update. Does the machine run cooler? Will I still have to run SMCfancontrol? Improved wireless connectivity? Actually feeling like my machine has 2GB of RAM?
Also, it would be nice if it installed a free UB update for Photoshop. - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm afraid to do it - mine works flawless.
- specialkay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple will replace the inside shell if its Staining.
- TurboDerek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If those two mac geniuses had issues with their computers they would fix them no questions asked. If you were not an ass they could do the same for you. But being "they worked some ***** mall job" they care even less when a jerk yell at them.
- greebowarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i did. it actually started on tuesday, when i went to use my mac on the tube.
i woke it, started playing itunes, and *poff*, gone! reboot, quickly shutdown, etc.
happened again in the evening, and the following morning, then stopped.
mind you, yesterday it decided that it detected no battery in my macbook, but plugging it in, removing the battery for a few seconds, and putting it back seemed to fix it. - GernBlanston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works for me, I've been monitoring boards and waiting for a general "this fix worked for me" consensus. Loaded this up this morning, been stressing the processor ever since and no random shutdown. Awesome, I was really dreading sending it in for repair.
- steveDS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Installed the update. (white MacBook, bought end may 2006)
Good news: no crashes
Bad news: fan won't turn off
Question: what should I use for the heat limits with the MacBood Fan? - isaac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works great here too - I've been having lots of shutdowns for months, and been avoiding them by locking the cpu frequency at 1.00ghz at every startup (hold the power button down for 5 seconds or so, until it makes a loud beep) - couldn't live without my computer for a couple of weeks.
But without doing the above, I was lucky if I could get to the login screen. Now it works flawlessly.
I share others concerns that the firmware update is just ignoring a bigger issue, such as a melted cable touching the heatsink - but if thats the case, I figure something bad will happen to my MacBook before the warranty is up - and if that happens, I can send it in.
In the mean time, it means I have a computer that I can put to sleep, and run at full sleep without issues. Needless to say, I'm a very happy camper. - jfturcot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't work for me, my MacBook just rebooted for no reason. I installed that new firmware the day it came out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Its the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field at work.
- muleking, on 10/12/2007, -17/+16Wow, it only took me 3 logic boards, 3 heat syncs, and cursing out two "geniuses" to get mine fixed.
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -29/+27Here's what I'm thinking about this update... The "improvement" is actually the firmware just ignoring short-circuit situations when the heat-sink expands and comes into contact with the thermometer. If this is the case, then you may in fact degrade your ability to detect true over-heat situations in your MacBook.
Looks like Apple's trying to take the cheap way out of this problem, instead of fixing the root hardware issues involved. - Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -19/+15Why is longofest being dug down? This is exactly what Apple is doing...
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1What does that have to do with anything?
- Danyc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1when computers have made us their slaves we'll be sorry about these "firmware updates". sigh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2"CBTF says a garbage dump solves macbook issues."
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2If they had just used Arctic Silver and applied the thermal compound properly there wouldn't be a problem in the first place.
- knowall, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6http://www.digg.com/apple/MacBook_SMC_Firmware_Update_1_1
(official link) - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2@ Yarnage
Because he posted his comment in both posts, maybe? - postaldave, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7what happened to apple having the greatest hardware ever?
if all this happens then why buy a mac for more money then a PC? - muleking, on 10/12/2007, -23/+7Actually they were being unhelpful jack asses that were too lazy to do any type of troubleshooting.
Cursing them out and reminding them they worked some ***** mall job felt great.
Then going over their incompetent heads did get it fixed faster, got my telephone support extended from apple, and it made me feel great, so go screw.
