Apple's iPhone to arrive in early 2007 with 2MP camera
appleinsider.com — Apple Computer's much anticipated iPod cell phone is due to arrive either late in the first quarter or early in second quarter of next year and will include a 2.0-megapixel digital camera.

- Shayer, on 10/12/2007, -66/+68you're gonna get dugg down, along with me, but thanks for pointing out the truth.
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -46/+25+1 to both of you. It doesn't have to be good anymore, if it says Apple anywhere on it people will drool over it.
for what it's worth my new phone has a 1.3mp camera, and I don't want my MP3 player to be merged with my phone for reasons of drained batteries, but some people just want to combine everything in to one little gadget with outdated battery tech. Once some real innovations in battery tech come out then this could be great, but right now it's a mixed blessing. - friend18, on 10/12/2007, -28/+124Apple has a dedicated fanbase and userbase because of how great their products are. Not because its a brand name. You guys sound like gossiping girls who are jealous of a really pretty girl so you call her a slut.
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6Don't confuse being outdated with being close to the theoretical limit for that battery type. There isn't anything great on the way, either.
- sabarsky, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40don't lump all us mac users into the rabid apple fan camp. my xbox 360 doesn't like that.
- Lane5slacker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+48If you ask any photographer, a ***** camera is infinitely better then no camera.
Besides, it is, firstly, a Music player and phone. It's not suppose to be the worlds best camera. - ToddML, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36Megapixels are hardly the only measure of camera quality. As long as you have "enough" resolution, other factors take precedence. a 10 megapixel cameraphone with the light sensitivity commonly found in most cameraphones is still going to be useless in low light situations. Let's wait and see, shall we?
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Stop making assumptions about the user base of an unannounced product on rumored specs.
That's just uncool. - Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -5/+162MP is above average for cameraphones these days. It'll be a little more common in early 2007, but still nothing to sneeze at.
- nayr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3@kenvsryu: not so sure about that. The thing about that was that the ipod arrived when there was very little real competition; the cell phone business has been around longer and is much more well-established. I'm rooting for it, but this could, probably will be, a failure, at least compared to all the hype.
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -23/+9Apple has a dedicated fanbase and userbase because of how great their products are. Not because its a brand name. You guys sound like gossiping girls who are jealous of a really pretty girl so you call her a slut.

*****. apple is a marketing machine. jobs takes existing technology, repackage it, and add the "cool" factor. their fanboys are nothing more than sheep who want to be "cool" and be part of the in crowd. it's like highschool...10 grade...when you come back from summer break and you see some guys who were previous geeks wearing trendy clothes and slick hair. all in an effort to be part of the cool crowd.

Now you remind me of the Goth kids on South Park. It seems like your anti-apple for no real reason other than they are popular. I didn't buy my first Macintosh computer because it was cool. My friends dad let me use his and I was amazed at how great it was. Computing didn't have to be a hair pulling drag on Windows. OSX is a great operating system and the Ipod and Itunes are and were an extremely well made and thought out product. The Ipod wouldn't be the most popular Mp3 player in the world if it were utter *****. - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+122 megapixels is mediocre? On a mobile phone? What mobile phone store are you browsing? All I see is VGA and 1.3 MP. I was going to complain that this story was another unsubstantiated rumor, but I think it's worse to start hating on the product before it's even released.

Bill Gates is white, and he gets dugg down the whole time? - bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7 I see 2Mp cameras in phones now, I think I watched a review of a new sony phone on C|net w/ one a few days ago. It's the next step and by the time the iPhone comes out it will be the norm. That is of course if camera phones don't develope any faster than they did this year.
@firemillen2
I agree with friend18. If Apple didn't come out with good products they wouldn't be doing as well as they are right now. Yeah, they do use older tech in new products and brag about it, but the fact is, it's b/c they put the tech to better use. Oh well.
If you haven't realized, Apple comes up with more innovative ways to use current technology than any other company around, especially in the way of computers. They are a hardware company with their own OS that is far more advanced than a software company has came up with. Tell me that's been done by anyone, better. Then they take a step in another direction, and that's music. They've got a far larger media library than anyone else, and again, they are a hardware company. They have the best working machines with the best os and they also figured out how to make them look good too... All done by one company... and you're over here trolling on them. - g0dzuki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11iPods aren't white anymore.
- Jaxim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Come next year, my choice for a new phone will either be the iPhone or the Nokia N95. The Nokia N95 has a music player, a 5 MP camera, and GPS, along with tons of other features. It may not have the cool UI of an Apple product, but it may be the best all round swiss army knife of phones. Judging from what I see so far for the N95, Apple has a lot to put into their phone in order to win me over.

- tuxerware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've had a sony ericsson K750 for a year now, it has a 2Mpixel camera. And i would say that 2Mpixels could be more than enough, it's the lens that matters. The lens on this phone is decent but no more.

- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Anyone know if it'll have GPS ?
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It could integrate with Leopard!!
"Turn right in 500 meters. ROAR!" - jonknee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very unlikely. It will be a GSM phone if the reports are right (so you can put in your SIM card--otherwise they would have to contract with Sprint or Verizon which is just not going to happen right away). GSM phones typically don't have a GPS, it's a very rare feature. All new CDMA phones in the US do, that's why you see the navigation services being offered by CDMA carriers. The reason being is how each group decided to be E911 compliant. GSM phones use a network based technology to pinpoint location for E911, it's essentially triangulation.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It could integrate with Leopard!!
- Boorad420, on 10/12/2007, -25/+12itll be overpriced, overstyled, and come in a U2 edition
- bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2+1
I think you're wrong about over styled tho. Apple understands modern/contemporary styling. Nothing is there that doesn't serve a function. It's never "over styled".
Not too over priced, because the quality is good, but they are under featured. What I mean is, though the technology of radio integration in MP3 players is becoming more and more common Apple hasn't came out with a model that takes advantage of this from the box. I think it's because they can't sell radio in the iTunes Store, haha.
Then I was going to say that the U2 thing was right on, but I think they are seeing that the aids red ones are far more popular... b/c it's not U2...

- DollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14If its got more than 10 gigs I'll buy one and I'm sure many others will as its one less object to be carrying around....
I've been waiting for a long time.. - carapi, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1Every iPhone sold is one less iPod sold in the future.
Good move Apple. Cannibalize you only real saving grace in an effort to enter an extremely crwoded market only 8 years too late. Andwhile you are at it, give Microsofot some ammunition when your iPod sales slip. Sure, it will be partly due to the phone, but Microsoft's marketing doesn't have to mention that. They will just have to point out how much iPod sales declined in 2007 once the Zune was released. - nightchrome, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18My phone is over two years old and has a 3MP camera on it.
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4Yeah and you probably payed 400 dollars for it. :/
- nightchrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Not at all. I'm in Japan. I am constantly amazed at how far behind the rest of the world is with regards to cellphones.
- PANICOrganIC, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Always Japan...they do everything so much better.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9you want an award or something?

- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Oh your in Japan. Japan is way ahead of the United States in Cell Phones.
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I wouldn't say the cellphones are way ahead in Japan - they are all made by the same companies anyway - its the carriers in the USA that have to figure out how to nickel and dime us before any tech is introduced here.
- bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I have a Blackberry Pearl (NOT CHEAP) and it has a 1.3Mp... but if you had a 10mp camera w/ the same quality at the 1:1 ratio it's still going to be a ***** camera.
No matter, it's main function is to be a phone. If you want a good picture, buy something called a "Camera". It's a tool used for the same thing, only, it's only function is to take pictures, so it does it better. - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1My phone is 10+ years old and it comes in a hard, gray, plastic walkie talkie style case... do you want a cookie or something?
- flypcide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@friend18 - what, you think they're going to give the iPhone away for free?
About the megapixels, that is disappointing if they stick with 2mp. Unless the lens is totally revolutionary. I just bought a Sony Ericcsson k790a (the US model) for use on Cingular and it comes with a 3.2mp camera.
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26Oh man, thanks for the information.
Could you link me to Apple's press release?
Oh...no?
Thought so.- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Why is this guy being dugg down? The title of the article states it as though the iPhone and it's 2007 release and its 2 MP camera are facts straight from the horses mouth (Apple), which is not even remotely the case.
- sshuit, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Make no mistake this is a "killer app" as far as I'm concerned. I can't go anywhere without my cell phone and my ipod. Now I can just carry one thing instead of two. Add in the ability to buy songs from itunes via WiFi and you've got some real synergies happening.
Besides, what self respecting nerd doesn't want to buy a new cell phone and or ipod every 2 years or so ?- PANICOrganIC, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Just say "no" to outdated lingo like "killer app". You know app stands for application... Repeat the sentence and cower in embarrassment.
On Apple: I like their innovation like the rest of you, but sometimes they shoot a little fluff up somethings ass and call it new and improved.
-chunk peace - manoftheisland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yeah this is the truth... and honestly i am sick of having to take my phone and iPod around together... pocket space it at a premium for me... i take my ipod to work every day then bring it back inside... with 2 sets of keys, and ipod a wallet and the cell phone i dont have much room left... rather uncomfortable if you get my drift... now all we need is an
iWallet - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Killer app doesn't have to mean straight-up "computer application". An application for something is a use. Purpose, even.
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I kinda need my Treo - its like oxygen at this point. I really hope the iPhone has a full keyboard and wireless (EVDO or Edge) connectivity. Otherwise, its pretty useless to me.
- bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1YES. I know, I have to carry my keys, wallet, ipod and cell everywhere. I hate things in my pocket too, especially my ipod or cell in the same as my sharp keys. The ifone done right will be a great tool for people like me.
Also, whoever mentioned Edge, if you have edge, it doesn't do much... I think you're talking about EDGE.
- PANICOrganIC, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Just say "no" to outdated lingo like "killer app". You know app stands for application... Repeat the sentence and cower in embarrassment.
- blake213, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11Am I the only one who thinks a cell phone should be for making phone calls, a digital camera for taking pictures, and an mp3 player for playing music? Why combine it all?
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15How else are 13-year-old Myspacers going to take pictures of themselves?
- DogDog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Tell that to my Blackberry! Something I avoided getting for a long time but can live without for work.
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Almost everybody who has an iPod has a cell phone. Why not cash in on that if it does a good job at both? Camera phones will not be replacing traditional digital cameras anytime soon though (unless they figure out the whole optical zoom and flash thing).
- shockingbird, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So you won't have 5 gadgets in your pocket or god-forbid, your belt.
- Soulo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Like anything new in the cellular phone industry.... does Asia get it first?
- corduroy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I don't think it'll matter. A lot of people still clamour the RAZR and that only has a VGA camera. Currently here in the states, a 1.3 megapixel camera is the incoming average and 2 megapixels are the higher end models.
However, how will this compare with SE k790/K800 and the Nokia N73. Both have good mp3 playing capabilities, offer 3.2 megapixel cameras and I believe retail for 499$/599$ (you can order them through their respective websites). Memory can be upgraded (i think they have micro-sd slots), however, the camera can't.- whirlwind12, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1however this camera will have at least 10 gigs of memory...get ten gigs of memory in a micro sd will you?
- corduroy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i was mistaken, the se phones use memory stick micro.
no offense or anything, but has their been any documentation stating 10 gigs yet? I've seen it mentioned here on digg but the normal apple rumor sites make no mention of it.
irregardless, i personally would rather have a 3.2 megapixel phone with lower memory now that's upgradable than having a 2.0 megapixel phone with a set amount of memory (however, it can always have an extra slot, but that 2.0 megapixel is permanent). it all amounts to preference. i hope it succeeds because of good hardware (rather than advertising), that way it can push other manufacturers to improve their own offerings. - khed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@corduroy
you are aware that irregardless is not a word? - corduroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3haha, oops. i am aware it's not a word. irregardlessly, i'm working on it
;)
- submariner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Why bother? Every place I work forbids camera phones, and now they're searching for them.
- JPDota, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Uhh. Most places don't. Most give out Treo's or some such to their executives.
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They make phones without a camera in it? Get a better job!
- Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2As I said before, I was given this contract and will make 1 million phones over the next 6 months, the first being sold Jan. 3rd.

- JerseyTim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0That ok, article, we don't need to know how many songs it can hold.
- Madbob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'd get one, the only contender to an iPhone is sony's walkman phones and the software on them is limited.
Apple will hopefully make a decent OS for their phone, that's what I look for in a phone. the camera/mp3 player are added bonuses! I still have an iPod to take my music collection with me, but use my SE Walkman phone when I can't be bothered to carry both around (e.g., I'm only going out for half an hour and not a few hours in the car/train/bus).
I'm looking forward to seeing apples entry into the phone market.- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Hmm yes, the Sony Walkman phone doesn't quite stack up to the rumored, non-existent Apple phone.
- Madbob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes... that's why SE are leaders of the market at the moment (at least from what i can tell from a UK standpoint), when (if) apple do release an iPhone then it will be a contender, i didn't say it currently was since obviously... it's only a few letters on a website at the moment.
- wetdirtmud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I currently own a Sony Ericsson W810i cell phone / mp3 player / 2 MP Camera, and I personally couldn't love it any more. I've got usb capabilities to get any kind of music I want, a 1gb card to hold approx. 10 full length cd's, and so many skins/themes, games, and anything customizable. On top of it all, it only cost me $99 from Cingular... the iPhone might be behind its time already.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A cameraphone could be 20MP, until they get a real lens in those somehow, they'll always be crap.
- Madbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not the lens that's the problem, it's the photo transistor chip thing (can't remember the proper techy name for it...) that converts the light into a picture file... the phones are just not large enough to have decent one of these installed and that's why camera phone pictures always turn out rubbish in low lighting.
- jblfireball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Madbob
CMOS sensor is probably what you're thinking of, and well i think no. the CMOS sensor is what actually turns the light digital and that is where the pixel bottle neck is, you can interpolate all day and increase the pixel count, but it will still really just be 2MP from the 2MP CMOS. Granted, it does also need other image processing hardware to handle things, but this is generally the problem.
- TWhid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6If Apple does do this, it won't be an iPhone, it will be the nth generation iPod -- adding phone capabilities. Just like the 'video' iPod wasn't a separate product but simply an update of the iPod.
I can see it now: Jobs is showing off the new iPod at Macworld and suddenly... it rings. Everybody goes nuts.
Mark my words :)- jblfireball, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1haha yeah, but I bet it will fall under the mini/nano product line (if it does become an nth generation ipod with cell phone and camera capabilities) and it will just have some annoyingly small amount of flash memory.
- sibhod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4except that adding video/photo capability changed nothing to the design of the ipod, and very little to the functionality for those just wanting to use a straight audio player. adding a cell phone into the next gen of ipods will drastically change the look, functionality, and price of a pure ipod.
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If anything it will be the iPod phone instead of the iPhone, but I agree, the iPod was given its ambiguous name so that it would not be locked down to any one function. Pretty smart marketing move.
- TWhid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sibhod
That's a good point, but don't forget the news of Apple's patent today:

- CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1okay... big question.... Battery Life?
What good is your phone going to be when you've drained your batteries dry listening to tunes all day. - DogDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Madbob - the photo transistor chip thing is called a CCD detector Charge Coupled Device and I think the Lens is also a factor as you can separate the effectiveness of the detector from the optics.
- srgolub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Will it be CDMA or GSM? Any idea what carriers will get it first?

bs- ioannusdeverani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. Do we really know anything about this, or are we just creating hype?
- ryanschmidt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bigger Question:
Service Provider? - yujie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How does it compare to the Nokia N95 or Sharp 910SH?
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would compare but they would digg me down so bad that Digg guys would contact FBI :)
3 words: Nokia, Symbian, expertise
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would compare but they would digg me down so bad that Digg guys would contact FBI :)
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes but knowing Apple we'll get the first cameraphone that works like a real camera. Remember when digital cameras first came out? There was a 6 second lag time between shots or "warm up time". This is what's on most camera phones. Steve Jobs wouldn't alllow such a lag, so I long for a camera phone, that when I click the photo button, it instantly takes a photo. This is something Steve Jobs would do.
So hopefully we'll at least have a feature like this. I really don't care about megapixels. I could have an 8 megapixel cameraphone, and it still isn't anything like a 6 megapixel point and shoot because the lenses are so POOR on cellphones. It's not the megapixels that matter, it's the lense quality. - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't want a camera in a phone. I just want a phone that works damn it. Bluetooth would be essential. I also agree that 2MP is mediocre.
- dsn0wman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony has already been there and done that. see W810i or numerous other models.
- TheJenks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was looking forward to the iPhone, but a 2mp camera? I was expecting apple to at least go for 4mp to be in competition with the likes of nokia who will be past 5mp when the iPhone comes out. Bit of a disappointment as it would have been nice to combine my phone and ipod, still no judgements until I actually get to see one.
- styromaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let iPods be iPods. If you make an iPhone it pretty much compromises everything that makes up what is an iPod. But if you build a digital camera into a Video iPod then you keep your design, MP3 functions and interface virtually unchanged.
