- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Did you actually go through the patent? Notice the part where it says supporting cellular or mobile usage?
[0111] In one embodiment, the device is or includes functionality for supporting cellular or mobile phone usage. In this embodiment, the device includes processors, transmitters, receivers, and antennas for supporting RF, and more particularly GSM, DCS and/or PCS wireless communications in the range of about 850 to about 1900 MHz.

- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3paganizonda is part right. The text may be for a phone (word phone only used 7 times and mostly to mention devices such as...) but the pictures are exactly of the iPod mini. Note the rubber surrounds around the battery, the hold switch, and the remote control port next to the headphone jack in the upper left. They do not have to use this design, most likely the GUI and phone haven't actually been designed. Read this section:
[0125] It should also be noted that completely different form factors may be used. For example, the device may correspond to smaller more compact devices such as the Shuffle and remote controls manufactured by Apple Computer of Cupertino, Calif. - kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Direct link to the patent. Coincidence? - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dugg you up for being reasonable. I'd like to see an Apple phone with iPod/iTunes integration but until Apple announces it, it doesn't exist. All this is pointless speculation until it's a shipping product (if ever). I'm going to MacWorld in January and can't wait to see what they release.
- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh shush, Arkonnan, Macs can read those images just fine. And can probably do any of the other things you're thinking of too.
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another fake slidephone mock up, combined with pictures of the new nano.
Apple is not going to put a standard keypad on a phone capable iPod, too many buttons on a product where the number of buttons has only gone down with each generation. - r81984, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is this just a copy of the LG Chocolate (VX8500) phone??
http://www.mobiledia.com/phones/lg/chocolate.html
Everything about it looks the same, the slider, the controls.
I think LG might made millions off of the iphone because of Apples patent infrindgement.
Also, I cannot see how the patent office can even grant Apple the patent if LG has a patent for their Chocolate phone. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Prior to the public info of the patent, even ThinkSecret didn't know that Apple was going to use Zirconia for the casing - so yes there's still a lot of value in actually reading up on the patent.
- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, see the slit in the upper left next to the headphone jack for the iPod mini remote they had made. If you've ever taken apart the iPod mini you'd recognize those odd shaped metal brackets on the top and bottom ends under the plastic also.
- sparkrainfir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hope they sell these without contracts, i'd pay 250 to have one; i'd really hope that 250 isn't the "2 year contract" price!
too bad it doesn't have a camera, or does it... - BishopAzrael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats how it starts. First you get an iPhone. then you get the ipod. Then you get a macbook, then you get the macpro for the den and the itv for the living room and a macbook pro.... :)
Apple halo effect. - klang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably a whole new group: scrollwheel...
- etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is because Chocolat is "borrowing" design ideas from Apples iPod designs. If the iPhone does look like Chocolat I'll expect Apple to exceed expectations in all the "small" things - reception, battery life, user interface, syncing, etc.
- aa90digg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I gotta say, I really don't care for the Iphone, but that's an hot design.Kinda remind me of the Chocolat phone by Motorola (I think)
Anyhow, it's cool. - f8tbrautmehere, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@flag564
This is you:
We all know and "love" Bill O'Reilly, the uber-conservative windbag that graces the airwaves of Fox News. He regularly spews bigotry, hatred, and downright falsehoods on his program.
Little-known to the internet community, the user Flag564 has filled O'Reilly's shoes on the popular website digg.com. His enemy? Not liberals, not democrats, not even Marilyn Manson, but the worst kind of human being in existance: smug Apple fanboys.
Like good ol' Bill, flag regularly spreads disinformation when he's not constructing straw-man arguments or attacking pro-Apple articles based solely on the fact that it's something good about Apple. He will not rest until the Cupertino headquarters are burned to the ground with Steve Jobs' head delivered to him on a platter.
When dissent is raised or when someone attempts to reason with him, in true O'Reilly fashion, flag attacks reason with accusations of fanboyism.
I will finally close this article with a series of quotes from the Flag-man himself:
"I would think that even a mac user would be smart enough to see that it's fanboy trash."
"The only people excited about OSX and Macs are rabid fanboys - and there aren't too many rabid OSX fanboys out there. Apple should dump OSX and their poorly selling desktops and stick to making mp3 players. Why waste their time in a market that doesnt want Apple computers?"
"Not as much as fanboys "own personal health and self esteem" is directly tied to the failure of Zune."
"It's a threat to the ipod, which they all own, and it is made by Microsoft, which they all hate.
It isnt more complex than that."
"will the mac fankids digg this article from the man they call a complete idiot to advance the action line that nobody will buy the Zune."
"Itunes is a bloated, buggy, piece trash and is screwing people out of their money.
I give it 4 months tops before people start abandoning it in droves.
-A tribute to the troll spamming skills of the fanboys."
"Ok, lets see how the fankids will spin this as a negative.
Or will they just mod down everyones comments and go run back to their holes?"
"Did you write this with Jobs's dick up your arse or down your throat?"
"That's it fankids. Positive Zune news goes under the rug. Not a big deal at all."
"Ah Quixe troll made it to his mac in time to post my name so he can get some postive diggs! I bet you wet your pants when you saw this story."
"The point of this is that the fanboys found some fellow fanboys on CNN trashing the Zune, so they made sure this got to the front page as some sort of proof that the Zune will fail."
"They had this story ready to go to the front and they were at the ready to do some serious fanboying. "
Just googled you...
So flag564: If you call ASTROTURF in this and other threads, what is it you would call that you do here? - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@nuked water: Sometimes I digg something only to find out that it's fake or a hoax in the comments, at which point I undigg the story.
- DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Many reviewers have been commenting on the better sound quality of the Zune...and now I know why.192kbps WMA does sound better than 128kbps AAC. And to all the naysayers , yes it has been scientifically verified (double-blind studies based on the Scientific Method) that WMA is a better sounding codec at even low bit rates ;) Imagine that...pay the same for Zune files and get better sound quality. Apple can`t seem to afford the bandwidth for better sound (it saves them money). MS also lets you download all your music again at least five times. Leo Laporte also admitted that the subscription model is a really good idea ;) , but Apple couldn`t afford that.
- snipes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So it's gonna be a slider? Or a candybar?
- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Mmmm, out of curiousity why was I dugg down? Was I incorrect in anyway? Look I don't want to start any fights but think about it, how many different designs have we seen with these numerous past patents for the iPhone? Why is this different from any of them? Is that render indeed just an artists impression, or was is filed with the patent or something? These are the questions that are bugging me, that no one seems to have a solid answer for. The patents are not for the look of the device but generic diagrams to illustrate the technology and how it functions.
Did I tick someone off writing my last paragraph? Look I'm not an Apple hater/fanboy, but I do admire Apple's unique approach on things. I'm saying that all the news we here so far is not satisfying my appetite thats all. Not "hahaha Apple is ***** windows is betaar".
So please would someone be so kind as to answer my questions and help clarify the facts from the rumors for me.
Thanks - AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If the real iPhone turns out to be like this model or sketch, i'm gonna say it's gonna be a big failure, if they want to sell it as a 'Phone' + 'iPod' then the enclosure will have to be somehow refined from the regular iPod mini, it would look like a brick compared to the chocolate (from LG) and the like, however, if they start with a shiny plastic iPod Nano and modify it that might do the trick.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I'm a Apple Hater myself, but that looks like something worth gett'n myself.
- washingtonydc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6http://appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2274
full article and pictures.
"Although not shown in the filing, the iPod maker said internal components of some of the described devices could include support for FM, RF, Bluetooth, and 802.11 wireless frequencies.
"In one embodiment, the device is or includes functionality for supporting cellular or mobile phone usage," the company said. "In this embodiment, the device includes processors, transmitters, receivers, and antennas for supporting RF, and more particularly GSM, DCS and/or PCS wireless communications in the range of about 850 to about 1900 MHz."" - deanypop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The most "Apple" thing to do to the market would be to have a single phone that worked with PCS, GSM, and wacky-Japan frequencies... Keep your number, keep your phone, work with whoever gives you the best deal.
At the right price point, it wouldn't need to be a very "smart" phone to still be popular for the service portability, and it would definitely have that Apple-like "boom" that upsets the entire industry.
Yeah, it's all speculation, but give me the magic "any service, anywhere" phone, and then add cool features later. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Oh.. it looks like the image I posted above wasn't made by Apple, it's just a mockup by some fan.
- dsalmon9, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Neither can my windows machine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Apple will sell tons of their phones. They will be doing phones right, just as they made MP3-players right with the iPod. Anyone remeber the diskdrive players before the iPod, their USB1-connection, 20 seconds of battery time and a completely useless interface?

http://iphone.edu.org/ - benggg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7that isn't the iPhone. it is a concept by some artist not apple.
- paganizonda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Thank you. I like I how I have -34 diggs for being correct. Good job guys.
- donjaime, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I was really hoping apple was going to go with a 16:9 aspect ratio. I might just get the nokia n95 next year instead since media playback is something I really want in my next phone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRjZx9-gbv0
The only reason I haven't bought an Ipod yet is that I don't want to have to lug around two devices, the ipod and my cell phone. - digga, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Sync songs to it using 802.11?? Nice!
- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3The mockup looks sleek. (that is a mockup right? based on the artists impression of the patent diagrams?)
Either ways patent diagrams are still nothing to go by for the final design, all we know by this article is that the iPhone is definately in development at least. I wouldn't count on this for a final aesthetic look to the device. What seems to be pretty strong rumors are that it indeed has a slide out keyboard and two batteries (from what I can see in this diagram in comparison to Kevin Rose' friend with the know).
All this iPhone stuff is getting tiresome though, as always I will just wait until an official announcement from Apple themselves. I'm looking forward to see what Apple have up their sleeve, but ah I dunno... guess I just need an official voice to make me happy.
Peace. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Then wait til iPhone gen. 2 or 3. These things will get slicker and slicker as time rolls on, just like their regular ipod line.
- thenamestj, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4im calling ***** on this site....those look like patent forms from the ipod mini. if you've ever taken a mini apart the mock ups shown are exactly the same.
- evilrobot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3with no plugins i could see them just fine on my mac...
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Nice! I dugg the story when it was posted by the author on Digg. A little over the top but very funny.
This part makes me laugh everytime:
"He will not rest until the Cupertino headquarters are burned to the ground with Steve Jobs' head delivered to him on a platter. " - AgentAce, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I prefer this little design:

coral cache. slow, but if you're patient you'll get the pictures. the pictures on the patent office's site didn't work for me, so maybe this'll help someone. - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Please commit suicide flag. Digg should implement a a feature where after 100 times a user is blocked they are banned. :/ You'd be gone.
- tumult, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@chabs39: too bad there wasn't a diggmirror when i posted my comment. the linked site was down and there were no mirrors at the time, but it kept getting digs.
- lzlaxhacker, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2As cool as the iPhone looks, in reading the comment by "donjaime" I just can't believe how ridiculous people are. Most cell phones these days are really small, barely noticeable, and we all know how small the ipod is. I think its quite unreasonable to say I don't want to carry around two devices, and I think its, dare I say, obnoxious to use the word "lug" as if there was any weight to them. Everyday in my pockets there is a cell phone, a multi-tool, my wallet, a knife...I barely notice any of them at all. Really...be reasonable people.
...and after that rant, yeah, the iPhone looks really interesting...maybe worth getting if its on Sprint(my provider) - HaxAttaX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1And who says americans don't get cool cell phones?
- EnderSFTD, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Look at the headphone jack. That's definitely an iPod Mini.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2It's the wierdest thing, in my opinion, that the government chooses the tiff format for document images on their sites. I work in a law office and it is maddening!
