- audiooeric, on 07/14/2008, -17/+35Great Comic!
While playing around this weekend, I thought of all of the applications that I had tried for my XV6700 and HTC Touch (Windows Mobile Devices) and they were all horrible, except the Sling Player. However, there wasn't any where central to get them (I hate handango) and it was tough to install them. Lastly, the developers were never inspired ($) to write good apps because the second it got out, everyone got it for free. Here we have the iPhone and only a few days since it was released with the ability to download apps (legitimately) and there are VERY useful applications for free, and some good pay apps. My WinMo friends gave me a hard time about my iPhone before; always saying that their phone let them install whatever they wanted. After seeing the new OS, they're all much closer to switching. The new OS really does make the iPhone the 3rd major OS for software development... - thedragon4453, on 07/14/2008, -1/+11I think he means:
1. windows
2. osx
3. osx mobile (iphone)
I love Linux, but I think that by the end of the year developers will be much more interested in the iPhone than in Linux. There is just no money in developing for Linux. - geneticlone, on 07/14/2008, -8/+17art was ok but that was pretty lame...

I kinda agree, but with reservations. Most of the current or currently-planned Linux-based mobile operating systems and platforms (with the exceptions of Android and OpenMoko) are being constructed and pushed by manufacturers with a majority of recent history being invested in mobile device manufacturing.
Apple, OTOH, comes from a GUI-, WWW- and media-centric desktop computer manufacturing background, and, despite their own history of faults, moved into the mobile device industry with a hardware design focus on the software's GUI, media and WWW rather than just how well the manufacturer was tied to the phone network. The other device makers, like Samsung, Nokia, LG and Sony Ericsson, are only starting to expand their scope to embrace this focus.
Although it isn't a manufacturer of WinMo devices (the manufacturers which have long supported WinMo do focus their hardware around WinMo's software), Microsoft has long pushed the idea that desktop-inspired software (GUI, WWW, media, etc.) should assume a greater role in the user experience of a mobile device, but it didn't push it as far as Apple did with the iPhone OS. I expect that Microsoft will push for a one-uping of the iPhone OS and its software in the future if they can persuade the manufacturers to redesign their mobile device hardware.
The problem that Linux faces is that all the manufacturers and manufacturing coalitions are coming out with their own incompatible mobile embedded Linux (or Symbian OS) and Java just to say to carriers and software developers "hey! we're open source! Feed my software appetite!" and nothing else. There's nothing to indicate that these operating systems will be worthwhile to use for users of the mobile devices which support the OSes.
IMO, it would be better to wait for a mobile multitouchscreen PMP/smartphone/remote control with Ubuntu MEE preinstalled or something else based on a "desktop Linux" rather than something generic like LiMo Platform or Qtopia. At least a mobile device that, like the iPhone and iPod touch, emphasizes the software, rather than the hardware, to the user's experience of the device, while still remaining FOSS and modifiable. - briguy200, on 07/14/2008, -2/+6Dugg for schadenfreude
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -8/+12Why do I feel this is a perfect opportunity for a rim job joke....lol
Hmm...I am just not funny enough..I will spare you all ;-) - nerdherder, on 07/14/2008, -2/+6The art was ok? It was basically the same picture used six times. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that but there is not really any art to praise there.
- BOFH2, on 07/14/2008, -1/+5Yeah RIM's updates for the BES servers never cause issues...
- jonmlm, on 07/14/2008, -3/+6a lot of work seemed to have gone into that. but, really?
- Sabin, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4A friend of mine that works for RIM just told me to skip on the Bold and get an iPhone a few hours ago.
- uncouthyouth, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2I added an RSS feed of this comic after reading all of them from the past year yesterday. Thank you Foxtrot!
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3BTW, that is the most pro Apple comic I have ever read but it's really good.
- arcticsoft, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3I call BS. What a cop out. I have a touch and I could not get the update for the touch. Now, I'm no networking genius but I have a feeling my touch has nothing to do with AT&T. Apples servers were overloaded and it had nothing to do with AT&T connecting. Apple should have anticipated this.

- xoineg, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2I was at the Apple store and most of the Apple people were saying that it was an AT&T connection problem that prevent them from activating the phones. Once it got fixed it only took like 20 minutes to get from #40ish to inside the store.
- ngmcs8203, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1I never said I hadn't seen it. I just think it's about on par with ROFLCOPTER!! OMGZ!!! and LAWLZ!!

- digiguy, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1Yeah, but what's your reason for the delays. Apple ***** fanboys can't wait a week?
- s0ny, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1not their download servers smart guy, iTunes activation servers.
- MrTito, on 07/14/2008, -6/+6Aww, did I hurt your sensitive little apple fanboi feelings?
- charlie763, on 07/15/2008, -3/+2..but this comic sucks even more.
- NeutrixX, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1I loved that cartoon, and yes I think Blackberry's are way more overrated than iPhones....

I think you miscounted - digiguy, on 07/14/2008, -3/+1What's your point? Really, people are ***** crying that Apple ***** them. I know they are waiting for Apple to admit their guilt, not just hearing ***** rumors on digg and engadget. People are ***** morons today, assuming every little thing. Maybe if Apple would come out with a statement about the problems, the world would be a better place. Just admit it's a server problem, a software problems, an iTunes problem. AT&T already pointed the finger at Apple.
No, just give us $100 for your mistake. - ReyX, on 07/14/2008, -4/+1Disast(e)rous comic.
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -4/+1mobileme is still giving me fits in my calendar
- 555damo, on 07/15/2008, -5/+2Yes, this comic is lame but how come the story is near the top of the Digg homepage? And how come tedious posts like 'I Lol'd' get through? (Yeah, I'm talking to you spleeyah.) More and more it's overrun by people who have nothing to say except 'me too' and 'LOL'. Clearly, Digg is on the decline.
- Mier, on 07/14/2008, -5/+2RIM ain't dead yet and Apple has to make headway with Exchange users. BTW, people that use Exchange and Outlook usually aren't macaphiles.
Yes a step in the right direction but the journey of a thousand miles has only begun. The first footfall was loud and boisterous, RIM knows you're coming so you better get ready for a hell of a fight. - digiguy, on 07/14/2008, -10/+6It's Monday afternoon and Apple is pretending none of the problems and inconveniences ever happened.
