- Nysul, on 10/11/2007, -20/+112I prefer MS products myself (for various reasons), but congrats Apple. An increase in market share can only mean better products from all competitors.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/11/2007, -10/+42If you bought a mac to feel "indie", you're an idiot.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -18/+48They still have a loooooonnnggggg way to go
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -7/+36Today 5.6%, tomorrow... 6.
- qwertyguy1984, on 10/11/2007, -25/+51This is super news, but I like having the satisfaction of being the only one around with a mac.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -3/+25See what happens when you gain over 5% market share? You lose all your indie cred...
- virtualball, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28They're the opposite of Gateway! One goes up, one goes down! :)
- Szandor, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25"I like having the satisfaction of being the only one around with a mac."
Not when you are *the* computer guy for your entire Windows-centric family. - fowleryo, on 10/11/2007, -9/+29they're fine where they are, imo.
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20agreed. pengu you need to relax. Just because someone didn't make the same choice as you doesn't make them a tard. Prefer Windows? No problem. Prefer Macs? Welcome! Prefer Linux. Good times! Stop assessing people on something as ridiculous as their desktop choice.
- t0ny, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19I dont like MS products but what he is saying is true. No need for all the apple fan boys to get all anal. For a while MS has been the only os people think about. So all MS cared about was making it better then the last release. But now that Linux and Mac are gaining ground MS has to make their os even better to keep ahead.
- gregulate, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16haha poor Gateway
- padfoot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15*sigh* Like all other PC manufacturers, Apple do have a multi-button mouse. Granted, it is a poor one in my opinion, but then again I would not consider using the standard mouse that comes with most PCs if I had the choice.
Just like any other manufacturer you are free to buy your own mouse and use that instead. - bigdoof, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Uh, read the guy's comment. He gets a strange smug feeling being the only guy using his operating system of choice. I'm not talking about you, no need to get defensive.
- x13x, on 10/11/2007, -6/+18i might get dugg down for this, but ive noticed that some apple afficianados are particularly defensive. you guys need to chillax a little bit. watch your own ads. the mac guy is cool and quietly confident, the pc guy is the uptight nerd.
- NSResponder, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14That's why AAPL is a growth stock, while MSFT stagnates.
-jcr - Dylson, on 10/11/2007, -15/+26Meanwhile, Linux still has yet to get half of a percent. But, good for Apple. I am on a mac right now. I love it.
- EvilWalksWithMe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Why? Is that what happened to you?
- fires, on 10/11/2007, -8/+18Fanboy!
- floejoe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Almost past a margin of error!
*ducks* - Zap2, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15Apple has had the mighty mouse out for a while....and then the whole, buying your own mouse, comes to mind.
If thats your reason for not buying a Mac...you need to look back into them.
If you have a good reason, fine. But OS blowing, which its clearly doesn't(no virus in the wild) and 1 button mouse(which isn't even true anymore/ buy a 2 button one) - cthellis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I miss flag... I keep expecting to see him around every corner, bitching. Perhaps the new posting method drove him off?
At any rate, I really wish they'd stop with the "marketshare uber alles" and also include "revenueshare" and "profitshare" to the mix. Unit sales alone tells only a part of it, but people weigh it above everything else. - harrysingh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11If that trend continues..... Really?
If ACER keeps growing at this pace (30 times faster than US market growth), in 5 years ACER will be selling more machines in US than people in US will be buying. Oh well... - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Apple is doing just fine. They've sold more machines each quarter for the last few years at a higher profit margin than any other PC maker. Or are you another one of those "market-share=success" people. As long as Apple keeps increasing their sales yearly, they are successful.
- zang74, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Dugg down for misspelling the comedic cartoon villains of my youth.
- Commodus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Last time Apple did A), it almost sunk the company. It would also kill some of what makes Apple unique.
B) Ever actually priced a major vendor's PC with similar features? Software probably bumps the price up a bit, but it's not jacked up.
Also, who says it 'needs' to emulate Windows? And who do you think shipped a GUI first? - rigogibson850, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9LOL... OMG A MICROSOFT FAN BOY!!! THEY DO EXIST!
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Considering you've been one of those complaining about iPhone stories in digg, why are you bringing it up in an Apple post that has nothing to do with it? Oh, I forgot, you're a tool.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8At least flag wasn't retarded
- danielwsmithee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8All the more reason to start using a Mac. I have 7 siblings, none of them are computer literate. I was constantly fixing something or showing them how to do something that was much more confusing then it should be. I bought a Mac. Five years later half the family has Macs and I spend a lot less time helping them with their computer problems.
- gregulate, on 10/11/2007, -13/+21I know what you mean. When I first got my mac it felt indie and made me feel like I stood out from the crowd a little bit, but now when I go to class or my local coffee shop, there are more lit up apple logos than anything else. Oh well, I'm not gonna complain. Apple makes super products, and they deserve to be recognized for it.
- mabhatter, on 10/11/2007, -24/+31macs are killing in the notebook market.. much higher than 5.6%. What's saving Dell and HP at this point are the massive Govt and corporate accounts where one manager buys 100+ (1000+) computers and nobody else has much say. COMPANIES are buying HP and Dell, PEOPLE are buying Apples...Apple enjoys a higher markup and more profit for the % they sell. Note, Microsoft is starting to loose control of Dell because they are selling Ubuntu boxes to feel out a new market to save themselves from being marginalized. At least a few things are starting to crack.
- lordtyros, on 10/11/2007, -15/+22See, these are the numbers including online sales. Good job, Apple.
- anthonybruno, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I guess you haven't heard of digital design (web, graphic.. etc). All of these schools and firms are almost dominated by Apple.
- ravi7791, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12If you can't afford $1200 or even $600 for the mini, you may want to think about changing your career path
- Vermifax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"I don't know why people like macs so much."
Then you've already lost the ardument. I respect MS Fanboys who, at very least, know the answer to your question.
"The OS blows and 1 button on a mouse... give me a break."
I'm envious. Now, I want a time machine so I can travel back to the year 1996- just like you. I'd buy 100,000 shares of AAPL. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Wow, you need to read... From the IDC press release is says...
"Shipments include shipments to distribution channels or end users. OEM sales are counted under the vendor/brand under which they are sold. "
seems pretty clear to me this is both direct sales and retail... - TheUngod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Wow, and people wonder why Mac fans are considered pretentious zealots
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12It's because Apple users are getting constantly attacked on their choice of operating system on a personal level.
Windows and Linux users are criticised on the faults of the OS. Apple users are always criticised for being Apple users. - zang74, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6That's like saying the Armored Personnel Carrier market should be included in overall car sales. Shall we include mainframes in there too? Howabout embedded processors in things like Microwaves and kids toys?
- zang74, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Many PC users just complain Macs are some sort of "Status Symbol" in the local Best Buy or Radio Shack. Just a lot of people with the inability to accept that Apple exists and need to belittle an object to make them feel better about themselves. Its all about homebuilt beige boxes to the PC user.
- NSResponder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I'm up 104.9% across my entire portfolio for the last year, and as it happens, I spent a couple years working on derivatives trading systems for JP Morgan, Salomon Brothers, and UBS/Warburg.
So, why don't you tell me all about how the market works, smart-ass?
-jcr - virtualball, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8The more pleased the girl is.
Oh...the harder they fall? - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6There are plenty of businesses that use Macs in one form or another
Not every Intel Mac user is bothering with Boot Camp or installing Windows on their Macs. Like me as there are no exclusive Windows programs I need. I'm not standing on a soapbox and screaming that Windows is crap or any other such nonsense, just that I don't need it at home.
OS X IS an advanced operating system...as is Vista and Linux. Any other crap you want to fling or have your meds kicked in yet? - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Chill out. Why does EVERY title have to have every fact listed? If you see a title that interests you, click and read. If not move on.
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Um, I don't know where in your ass you're pulling your numbers out of, but everyone else's numbers agree with the story.
http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=2
Mac PowerPC has 3.52%, Mac Intel has 2.48%. So where exactly are you pulling your numbers from? - moisie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8A highly profitable niche player. Look how powerful Apple are now, if they even doubled their market share they'd be huge. Apple don't need Microsoft percentage market shares.
- Vermifax, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Nothing? I wish I had 5.6%. Being a billionaire must be cool.
- Coinspinner, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6AWESOME. 20 years ago when I was a kid they were at 5%, so they've improved 00.6% in 20 years!
At that rate they'll take over MS by year 9999. - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5aaaaand of course you can't admit you were wrong can you zybch?
