- DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What would be really sinister and smart of Apple is to release some type of tablet, with a nice color screen, and keep it pretty small. Something like a 5 x 7 or 6 x 9 inch would be ideal. It could have a 40 or 60 gig HD, and a nice cool running Intel processor. This thing wouldn't need to be a powerhouse, but would need to do a few things very well, the first of which and most sinister, PLAY VIDEO. The next important feature would be wireless, 802.11 for ubiquity's sake. Then of course, adding some kind of cell phone based means of dialing up built in for web surfing on the go, and of course downlloading audio and video via iTunes. Then to put the icing on the cake, make sure some kickass games get ported over and you've got the hottest consumer electronics device to hit the market since the personal computer itself. The one sticking point would be this: PEOPLE WOULD HAVE TO BE ABLE TO RIP AND PLAY THEIR MOVIES ON IT. If they couldn't do that, it would really be a dealbreaker. You can't introduce a custom format like the PSP uses and expect it to take hold, you just would have to have it use a standard system. You could of course have it include a built in CD/DVD-RW drive, but then you are really adding to the size of the thing. But I suppose that is a sure fire way to get around the problems with the content providers. Anyway, this is what I would imagine the "video iPod" would end up being if it ever does come to be. It obviously seems like a far-fetched idea, but how many of you could resist buying something like this if it came in at about the 500-1000 price point, and could do anything any other computer could do, but maybe not have the horsepower to run the pro-apps and stuff?
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be pretty funny if apple was successful with a product MS couldn't get the market to accept.
- rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks more like a PDA than a tablet, which should be similar in size to a laptop or a notepad.
- Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Newton redux?
- mozTom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, they had a tablet spec video before the newton. It was like 12 minutes long, and had their idea of the macintosh being easier to use. You'd just talk to it and it'd do things. I'm guessing since voice recognition is a pain, they weren't able to do it. But yeah, they hate the keyboard and they wanted a tablet.
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Yes, I try it again and it works.

- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as i dislike Apple's self-hardware monopoly, i bet they could get the tablet idea spot on. Really, if anyone can get tablets into the mainstream, it's Apple.

- hobbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting perspective but highly speculative.

- rjespo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0+Digg for the entertainment value. By the end of that thing I was expecting the guy to predict quantum processors and a terabyte of ram. "And while they're at it, Apple might make the screen be the speaker". Ya that'll happen, and we'll all go blind looking at a vibrating screen.
