- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26This is ABSOLUTELY FALSE INFORMATION. EVERY MONTH as a developer I Get A DVD in the Mail with "Human Interface Guidelines" directory on it." One only needs to visit apples site with a free developer account to see this. Just because you dont' agree with the fact that garageband, itunes, safari, and the finder, all have different looks DOESN'T MEAN THAT HIG at Apple is dead.
:-) - TomMcBaum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Your guide would be much more useful (and fully transcend Apple's not-dead guidelines) if you provided cross-platform guidance as well. There are a few developers who port apps to other platforms, and not all platforms (of course!) should look or behave identically. Some sections, such as where and when to use an ellipsis, will be practically universal. Others, such as when and how (or if) to implement MDI, will vary.
- blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Dead?
- swordphish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm pretty sure I just read an up-to-date version of the HIG. Sure it doesn't cover everything about the new themes, I wouldn't necessarily call the Apple HIG dead. A little outdated (a very little), but not dead.
- Twohooves, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Stupid. THe HIG page was update October '06. It's not dead.
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Regardless of whether the HIG are dead or not (which is and has been debatable for a while), I think this is a good idea. Nothing wrong with trying to reach a consensus publicly, I think. I do think TomMcBaum is right though. It should be cross-platform, or at least have a section for each OS, in deference to multi-platform developers.
- brbrandon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I agree. Also with potential Finder UI changes on the way these Indie-HIG guys might find their interfaces don't look so hot in the near future."
The IndieHIG will be updated with new UI styles as they become widely adopted by Apple. This is one of the main benefits of having a community based site, rather than relying on Apple for guidelines. - brbrandon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3inkhead, yes Apple's HIG was indeed last updated in October 2006. However, the point is that Apple's HIG is dead in that it does not provide guidelines for any of the new (Mail.app and iLife 06) window styles or window elements.
- flickr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree. Also with potential Finder UI changes on the way these Indie-HIG guys might find their interfaces don't look so hot in the near future.
- brbrandon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, Apple has updated their HIG recently, but they have not updated it with the window styles introduced in Mail.app and iLife 06 as well as other widely adopted UI changes. For example, the Unified aqua window style in Mail.app has been out since Tiger was released in April 2005 and it is STILL not in Apple's HIG.
- jonashwing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Burried as innacurate.
- r04dki11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What is wrong with a community of developers working on a standard of User Interface design? I think a standard is needed so the end users can seamlessly switch from app to app and not have to worry about a "new look."
- cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3HIG is the foundation of the actual "guide lines" in Interface Builder, who's the R-tard?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent point, a ported app that doesn't conform to what users expect in osx feels really out of place and will suffer greatly.
This would be an excellent resource for Linux or Windows developers to get a bit of guidance - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@brbrandon:
the reason they're omitted, is because they're not available to joe and jane developer to use. go fire up interface builder and look for the palette of iTunes 7 window elements, or garagaband wood bars, its not there. - Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmm?
If I might add, i think that Apple is actually that company that care developing top-notch Human Interface Guidelines and taking them the most SERIOUSLY. It is part of what makes them great.
This is great, but the title and summary of this story are highly innacurate.. - dirkstoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool initiative.
This project could result in two things: new written guidelines and a framework with a set of additional interface elements. The examples shown on the front page can only be 'fixed' by creating a framework, not by providing a guideline as to how and where to use such elements. The wiki provides more insight into this project's ambitions.
A BSD-licensed framework with common interface elements would really save a lot of time for a lot of developers, but to discuss best practices for interface design - besides the guidelines provided to us by apple - could prove even more interesting.
I'll be keeping an eye on this. Best of luck! - SuitCase874, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, since when was Digg the last bastion of total adherence to the Apple HIG? I'm pretty sure there's not an app here I've seen people salivating about that strives to conform to it (Non-polished brush metal? Standard non-unified toolbars? Ewwww!) I'm surprised you're all not angry there's no mention of smoke as a standard UI element.
While I hate what Apple is doing to their interface, I like this IndieHIG idea. If anything, it should knock enough sense into Apple for them to put more work into revising their HIG and hopefully realising that some of their newer interface decisions are even harder to rationalise than the bizarre "brushed metal is about devices" idea of years ago. - kelly, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Burried as innacurate.
- necrisque, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with inkhead, but I still think this is a cool project. It'll be a cool supplement.
It would probably be a more remarkable and quite valuable effect to bring up some HIG material for Linux and Windows. These are places where I think the effort is needed the very most! Especially on Linux where you have lots of choices for different interfaces. - crazyboy1121, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Is there new guidelines to the UI with 10.5? like how iTunes 7 looks like?
- russbot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It says right on the blog that it's purpose is to supplement Apple's HIG with information from current app styles that are similar but inconsistent. Ones that Apple hasn't updated their HIG with... It's the first paragraph on the page. This isn't meant to replace Apple's HIG.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6I dont understand why you, and other diggers post useless links like that one, its not like the site submitted was blogspam. Its the blog of the creators themselves.
If the amounts of diggs a comment earned you meant anything at all, I would then understand, but it doesnt, so those diggs you earn for "helping" others out with your link are just pointless - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0you can get free os x softwares at http://www.freewareosx.com
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Apple is that last company you want designing UI's and standards.
- Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5Go DIRECTLY to the IndieHIG wiki: http://indiehig.com/wiki/Main_Page

Oh yeah, it induces bitchiness in people like you.
