Microsoft to purchase Apple; integrate OSX's development team into Windows team in order to make vast improvements to the OS.
VistOSX to take computing world by storm.
Steve Ballmer hires assassins to take out Linus Torvalds, linux wiped from the face of the world.
SupercomputeriPod running VistOSXPortable gains sentience, destroys human race.
Cyborgs take over planet, but keep crashing into each other as the last remnants of a Sony created rootkit makes them continuously attempt to report the contents of their brain-drives to a website that no longer exists.
The world ends in a horrible BlueApple screen of death. - danr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Marked as rambling blog fantasy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16@raar: yeah, that loses some of its appeal when you realize that what you've been doing is basically fiddling with a hammer while other people have been building houses.
computers are tools, and they're more useful when you're using them to complete some task.. having the biggest hammer in the box is meaningless unless you're building something with it.
but yeah, it can be fun. - twmsdude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Dvorak is out of his mind. He needs to do a little thinking. The Mac OS has been extremely successful in the last years especially since Tiger came out. Compare Mac OS to Windows. Mac OS= mostly malware free. Windows= use IE and your pwned by malware. Visually, Mac OS X is a shinning star in Windows' face. Rock on Apple.
(Still a wannabe Mac owner...Someday...Sometime...) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Phase 1. Boot Camp puts Apple back in control of the Windows enabling factor on Macs.
Phase 2. Leverage the marketing.
Phase 3. Once customers are aware that Windows is a no-brainer on an Intel Mac, Apple can start to manage the hardware and software infrastructure in which Windows resides.
Phase 4. Next, attack the problem of the security infrastructure of Windows.
Phase 5. In four years, it may be realistic to think in terms of a robust Darwine for Vista. This is a software tool that allows Windows applications to run without the Windows OS.
Phase 6. ??????????
Phase 7. Profit - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Windows Vista is the GhettoOS...
Nice. :D - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14> expertninja asked: "Why did draegloth's get modded down? I thought it was quite humorous."
> skunkman62 replied: "because it's has too many words"
Strange as it may seem, I think that skunkman62 is correct. I've seen many cases where a well thought-out but verbose sarcasm was modded down. I've begun to suspect that it is because most of us skim, rather than actually read, the comments. If you don't dig deep enough to notice the humor or the sarcasm then you might assume that the person is just being a big jerk.
I wonder if I'll be modded down because someone will skim my comment, see the term "big jerk," and assume that I was being a big jerk? :) - GoodBrain, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11"maybe when you start to actually work for your money you might care more what it's buying"
Yeah, and maybe you'll realize that your time is worth something and that maybe a computer that doesn't take as much fussing around to keep working is actually worth a little more. - expertninja, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15Why did draegloth's get modded down? I thought it was quite humorous.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15Can we have a single day without the same Apple rumors being rehashed by different sites?
- sspooner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I don't see how you can say "windows works fine" with all the spyware, viruses, rootkits and zombies.
Perhaps you mean it works fine for the people that exploit windows ?
Personally, I don't think windows "works fine". OSX is not perfect either, nor linux, but windows is the worst of the crop. - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This article was not written by Dvorak!

Yeah...my mom isnt going to pay for it you dick... I've paid for nearly everything i own except my clothes...
This computer im typing on ...I paid for...nearly all of it myself... 500 dollar self built pc 250 dollars for my dual monitor setup....I was given wireless mouse and keyboard for present from grandparents..and klipsch speakers from rents (who got rid of old pc).... So thats around 750 i spent on this computer... All my money... I work for what i want. I dont mooch off of my parents.
Not to mention the pvr i built around a computer given to me because it wasnt needed.. i then put 300 into it...all of my money...
Or my creative zen touch.. 220 dollars...all saved by myself...
I work for my money
Go ahead and bury this since its kind of a rant...but i want to let youareretarded and thirdtennor know that some of us arent spoiled rich kids who mooch off of their parents - lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You've brought up a good point - what if Apple start's fixing Microsoft's own problems faster than Microsoft can? And better, and nicer looking, and with more features? People could see some pretty neat results, and we'd see switchers...
- hangtown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thoughtless developer. Forcing mac users to buy a copy of windows to run your program. Boot Camp and other "Windows on a mac" options are for those already having ot use windows for specific tasks.
I hope mac users vote with their dollars by not purchasing your product. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"It's protected by Mac OS X and lives on under the supervision of and at the pleasure of Mac OS X."
Oh man. As much as I absolutely love this line and the idea of a dominant OS X, I'm really getting sick of people repackaging the same three stupid ***** Macwintel concepts over and over and over and over again. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, folks. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well said.
Apple doesn't care if Windows users want to hand over money to them for hardware. But they do care about keeping OS X as a viable alternative to Windows. It is the only thing that keeps them from having to go head-to-head with Dell. OS X is a much better operating system, even if you ignore all of the security problems inherent with Windows. It needs to survive, and there is no way in hell Steve Jobs is going to let it die by making it easy for software developers to just say "I can just write a Windows version now and run anywhere". - tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2let me say this a mac is not over priced or is there a preuim on a mac computer. if you belive that look to the mac mini thats a low cost speedy lill' mac.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have you priced the mac Mini then? Checked it's color? As of right now there are only 2 white computers in Apple's lineup, iMac and iBook. The rest, including the Mini are aluminum.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Linux is not even close to competing with OS X on the desktop. It can't even compete with windows. Simple things are a massive pain. The help systems are grossly incomplete. The distros are all quirky and different. The support forums are not a good solution for support.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Which is exactly why Apple will NEVER provide a virtualization solution. To convince guys like you that there is still a reason to write OS X software.
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Boot Camp is for games. Virtualization (Parallels) is for everything else. Dual booting is such an inconvenience.
- Raar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Enough with the freaking apple taking over windows crap. its been pissing me off, i dont like windows, but i still dont think apple is gonna take it over, its just not how it works. windows works fine, and so does apple, give people more options in their choices, cause if apple took over windows, it would be a major monopoly, cause all other OSes suck... :D
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9anything like russia's old five year plans?
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is BS. So they sold a Core Duo machine, which is one of the fastest out there, that runs XP fine, so that you could custom build what????
BS - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5will everyone stop doing that progression profit joke! Most of you ARE NOT good at it, just because it gets modded up on /. a lot doesn't mean you are clever enough to pull it up
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Complete and utter *****. I'm a Mac enthusiast and I am absolutely amazed at all this drivel about apple-supported virtualization. They're not gonna sacrifice OS X long term to sell more product short term. Steve Jobs is just too smart to do something so utterly stupid. Give it a rest everybody.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is not an app that I would ever use.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8sorry but 5 isn't a number Steve would chose-- more likely he has a 6 phase plan-- one for each colour of the old apple logo... duh
- Unknown1987, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3in a secret room somewhere jobs and his top henchmen decided to make the "switch",but now in a different sense.
- Fengpost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why does Apple wants play the body guard role for windows? While we are speculating, Cringely's suggestion is much better. See http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20060420.html
It puts the Mac OS on the forefront! - websitepro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is if Desktop Linux makes tough decisions and
puts a pretty face on Linux, like Xandros.
If there is a good enough GUI and a user doesn't have
to ask someone how to eject a CD with Linux, then
it has a future.
Otherwise, sorry, it's not happenin'
It's a little item that keeps getting ignored called "usability". - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple will NEVER supply a virtualization solution. They need the virtualization piece to cost money, and the larger the cost, the better. If it is free, then too many app developers will stop writing to the OS X APIs, and then the platform dies. By having Windows compatibility come at a heavy price, there will be adequate inducement for developers to continue writing OS X-specific code.
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't agree with you but damn, that was funny, hammydude! :)
- Sefirosu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Interesting" article...
Premium ? Well...Microsoft tax is one. - hangtown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The linux community is too fragmented. Linux gives you 1000 ways to do some things, and no ways to do others. It will never be a mainstream OS until the linux community gets over their snobbery. Let's face it, most of the linux geeks LIKE being exclusive and/or what they perceive as superior. They don't WANT others to use their precious OS.
Hence the reason linux is ignored in discussions of what will replace windows. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Phase 1: Ask everyone to stop doing that progression profit joke
Phase 2: Explain that most people are not good at it
Phase 3: Make a confusing /. reference
Phase 4: ?????
Phase 5: Profit! - loganrapp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can sort of see this "plan," and would like to see Apple flourish a bit more, but ultimately, with the way it was written, I have a hard time taking him seriously. He just seems like he's explaining to me why the candidate he wants to vote for is going to win the presidency, rather than giving me some objective speculation that I could at least read with some semblance of credibility.
- dioscaido, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Boot camp is great. As a developer, I no longer have to make my software multi-platform, I can simply code for Windows and run everywhere.
Not sure how this benefits OSX, but it definitely benefits the dev market. - sencha5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Draegloth:
Microsoft already owns a good stake in Apple.
My rumor? Microsoft increases the percentage slowly over the next 5 years until suddenly Apple turns into a Microsoft-governed hardware vendor selling on the Mac OS/Vista platform. Scenario: John C. Dvorak is right and Mac OS is an executive layer in a common (shared) OS, Mac OS handling consumers, creatives and devs and Vista (or whatever the future iteration is) will service enterprise customers. Remember, the main reason why MS has a 95-97 percent marketshare is because of enterprise. Walk into a larger call centre for example and notice 8-900 desktops (plus whatever's in the back) all with some version of Win 2000/XP loaded. - 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3In this part of CA people have been using Mac for a long long time. Just because it's the "wine country" they've already been using Mac in business and EDU too and have been ignorant to other options. Part of the reason for the switch for my new clients is now they don't have to buy a new Mac twice a year as Apple upgrades them. Them can now do intermittent upgrades as they wish.
I still use my MacBook for personal uses though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Extremely successful eh? So thats why Apple still has less than 4-5% market share."
Apple still being a 4-5% market share like you claim with no hard evidence is the very reason it is extremely succesful, hence no Viruses, Trojans, or Malware. I might be the only one who thinks this but I really hope they dont get anymore market shares, for the sake of having a beautiful OS with the vitual power of Unix under the hood and no Viruses. In my eyes Apple is succesful in this regard, But that is just fantasy from a business standpoint that will never happen and they, just like any business will claw and scratch to get to the top.
Im sick of seeing Apple stories on the front page for a whole different reason than most people and its because of the previous remarks - websitepro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm ok with most of it up to phase 4.
I don't think anyone can say much past that.
Only Steve knows for sure. He may have a
number in mind for OSX adoption. When he
reaches a certain number of installs, then
he decides how much more he is willing to
do with/for Windows. Time is definitely on
his side this time (not the usual scenario).
He's got all the cool toys and Microsoft is
late with Vista.
You see, he doesn't even need to necessarily
sell units, just give the paying public enough
pause to wonder if they should invest in a MAC.
If enough people hold off on their PC buying
decision, Apple may cause a bigger effect than
expected and sooner than anyone may have
thought. - lonegeek, on 10/12/2007, -24/+25I'm willing to fork over the premium price...and I'm only 14... Its all about the OS...Do you want to mess with maintaing the computer or just using it? Do you want to work efficiently or spend your time working around BSoD,malware ,poor menus, etc..
Sure the hardware looks nice too and is generally a small form factor... but thats just a bonus - ai42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is one of the worst dugg fanbody articles ever! I love my Mac but god, this is SO unrealistic. Even if Microsoft does everything wrong, and Apple does everything right it will take 15-20 years for Apple to gain dominance of the OS world. Simply because people don't like to change, and it will take 2-3 generations for them to "see the light". With these whole new MacTels I can see in the next 1-2 years them getting double their current marketshare, which would still put them woefully behind Microsoft.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Speaking as someone who spent the summer playing around with Objective-C and thinking deeply about the issues of writing software for the underdog OSes, this guy makes a good point, why would anyone now write cocoa apps when they could just write for one OS and hit all targets?
On the other hand, if there was a decent implementation of cocoa (am aware of GnUsTeP and it doesn't qualify kk thnx bye) on the windows platform, I'd be seriously tempted to give Java the flick...
So yes, it might require some big hefty download, but we've been forcing different flavours of vbrun.dll and jdks/jres down the end user's throats for years now, a couple of extra libraries would not be a big deal.
I'm particularly worried about outfits like Blizzard, when I switched to the mac I went and bought a bunch of their games I'd passed by on the PC, simply because they had really good support on the mac. Doubling up their effort over those years is something worth supporting I think. But now the cost/benefit ratio will shift, maybe for them coming out with native mac versions of their game won't make economic/business sense anymore? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Except you can walk into Costco or Walmart and come out with a budget computer running linux. Hardly elitist....
Give it a few years... - websitepro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1PC makers need not worry overly much.
There is a whole other price-point world
that will still be there under about $1200
while the retiring rich boomers may opt
for the ease of use and style of the MAC.
One suggestion for PC Makers: Try white cases, Steve
doesn't have a patent on the color white, yet. -
