- UselessTrivia, on 10/27/2008, -1/+58Or they should do what IBM/Lenovo does...design their laptops so that a small liquid spill can't get into the electronics.
My old thinkpad had a little tray under the keyboard that could hold almost 4 ounces of water. It had a little channel that would take the water away from the sensitive stuff and drain slowly out the bottom to avoid a puddle backing up into the case. That was quality engineering. - musters, on 10/27/2008, -20/+75No need to bash Apple anymore, they are doing a good job of kicking themselves down lately.
- roctimo, on 10/27/2008, -2/+30If only everything was in made in goog quality, we wouldn't have any problems!
- Autodidaddict, on 10/27/2008, -2/+29Fog voids the warranty eh?
- KSUdesigner, on 10/27/2008, -7/+30Wow people will surely come up with any excuse for Apple these days.
"I've had about a thousand bucks of work done on it by them for free"
That is work that shouldn't have needed to be done in the first place. You'd be throwing a screaming fit if it was a Dell or any other PC manufacturer.
And this comes from a guy who has three Macs at home and works in an office full of Macs. I buy them because I prefer them, but I certainly will not make up a sorry excuse that "I've had about a thousand bucks of work done on it by them for free," because that work shouldn't have been necessary. - dustation, on 10/27/2008, -7/+26Is anybody honestly truly 100% happy with these new designs? I mean yes, horay, slick new unibody and all that but really? All they've really done is take away options. Losing Firewire and ports on either side but gaining a pure mirror screen isn't exactly innovated. I've been waiting to buy a new Macbook Pro for a while now, but I've just been put off by Apple giving the finger to public and ignoring trends...BluRay!!! It could be another 2 years before they make a big hardware update but will the bag full of hurt of BluRay have worn off at that stage for Steve and his 'yes-men'?
- zdiggler, on 10/27/2008, -7/+22Leo got one of those Bricked ones, he was complaining about it on twitter. The he drank more cool aid and in love again.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/27/2008, -4/+18Liquid detection sensors are a load of ***** and are just one more way for a company to deny you the "warranty" you paid for.
Looks like Apple is going the way of health insurance companies, only without the monopoly blanket. (meaning you can build a computer capable of running mac software without any real personal repercussions) At this rate if they keep this ***** up, they won't have very many new adopters outside of the people who buy anything Apple just because it's Apple. - martyFREEDOM, on 10/27/2008, -1/+13Man, I would be pissed if I was walking around in some fog and it voided my laptop's warranty. ***** Apple.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+13"Liquid detection sensors are a load of ***** and are just one more way for a company to deny you the "warranty" you paid for."
They are a way of denying service to lying and negligent customers. You paid for a warranty for defects in parts and workmanship. Spilling coffee into your laptop isn't Apple's problem, it's yours.
I love how people hate being held accountable for their own actions. - CNAIF, on 10/27/2008, -1/+12"Apple declined to comment on a story but a company spokesperson cited the Macbook instruction guide that suggests that users should shield their notebook from "rain, snow and fog.""
Bwahahaha sure hope no one that lives in the pacific northwest bought one. - MarkusX, on 10/27/2008, -25/+36Instead of the stupid liquid detection system, with which they they want to detect lying customers, they should have paid more attention to stuff that is _supposed_ to be installed on the machine - and make _that_ in goog quality.
Motto:
Before you point fingers at other people, look at you own wrong doing! - jakatak, on 10/27/2008, -11/+21I believe that macbook AIR is a fail. I believe Apple TV (hobby) is a fail. I believe the 3g network on the iphone is a Fail. I believe not working on bringing the price down to compete with PCs is the biggest FAIL of all and I am a mac fan.
- yabos, on 10/27/2008, -3/+12Uh, it's just a piece of paper that changes colour when it gets wet. That's hardly a major engineering challenge.
- sockpuppets, on 10/27/2008, -2/+11Mine has SkeetGuard.™
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+10Exactly. God knows how many idiots I get every day trying to get away with user related damage, making up lies and ***** stories. Then, I corner them and they start screaming. Their pain feeds me.
- mulling, on 10/27/2008, -4/+12Instead of liquid submersion detectors, they should've followed Dell's lead and actually made the laptops spillproof.
As for the 'slanted keys' I have those and frankly, wevs. If you can't deal with a tiny slant in your keys, you have a stick up your ass. - inactive, on 10/27/2008, -11/+18The first run of any Mac is plagued with problems, my first-gen MacBook's a great example of that. It's also a great example of how Apple takes care of the early adopters, I've had about a thousand bucks of work done on it by them for free.
- DanNZN, on 10/27/2008, -1/+8by that logic there would never be a bad review.
- cyrusuncc, on 10/27/2008, -2/+9Liquids brick your brick
- nobelief, on 10/27/2008, -20/+26It just works!
- zydeco, on 10/27/2008, -1/+7If the notebook is cold enough and humidity condenses on the "sensor" (actually just a special paper dot in most cases), it'll get moist enough to change color.
At least they're hinting to be careful in high-humidity environments, just like photographers watch for lens fogging with cold optics. In fact most CE devices have fine print in the back saying to watch out for humidity. - alcimedes, on 10/27/2008, -3/+8Dugg for the correct spelling of loose vs. lose.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -1/+6Design/quality going down hill? Obviously, look at the last two iterations of their mac book, its sad to see that they're refusing to fix a design flaw that was entirely avoidable and can, with low cost to them, be fix. Sell the defective ones at a discount, recoup some of your losses and move on Apple, that's called good customer service/relations.
- morninglorii, on 10/27/2008, -6/+11I don't think I've ever seen such bad comments on a Digg article before, and that's saying something.
- srufus, on 10/27/2008, -1/+6Another Apple rip-off and I love Apple.
- MacParrot, on 10/27/2008, -1/+6Actually it's more like you say that in every Apple post. Even a broken clock is right twice a day
- mepawl, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbzx--isKN8
- KSUdesigner, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5No way! $1,000 of free work plus a free $1,200 replacement? That's like $2,200 of free stuff that Apple gives you! Quick everybody, run out and buy up those faulty notebooks before Apple fixes them all.
- fierylungs, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5If you haven't seen a firewire camcorder, then you haven't really been looking.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+7The bad part for apple is no easy fix for this one, they will have to replace the whole notebook. I bet someone at the factory got ripped a new ***** by apple, they have no margin for error on these
- ell0bo, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5but the entire would would be in beta... although it might be and that's what the Apocalypse is all about.. Mayan style.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+6And I believe you are correct, sir.
- antoni, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4I had a last gen MBP which had dead pixels on the screen and a stuffed sound card. I then got hit by the Nvidia 8600M GT problem with the last gen of MBPs 2 months out of warranty. After 4 weeks of talking to Apple, I finally I got it replaced with one of the new unibody Al MBPs. When I got the new unibody one, it was faulty DOA because the left speaker was stuffed. So now I've got a replacement which I am using to type this.
Bloody oath, is the %age of faulty MBPs really high or am I just extremely unlucky? - fuzzlepop, on 10/27/2008, -5/+9so is your face
- nullcodes, on 10/27/2008, -20/+24Apple shouldn't care about this. Why bother? It only affects a small percentage of users. Look, people are buying the iPhone which doesnt have Flash, doesn't do video, doesn't let you replace the battery, forces you to buy from the app store, doesn't have MMS technology (text messaging of images), and doesn't have copy & paste.
Advice to Apple, it's ok to be a ***** company .. the cult will always be there for you.
Yes, I am acting like a cynic. - Balanced, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Lots.
- centerblack, on 10/27/2008, -1/+5The first run of any product is going to have problems. If you compare the MacBooks now with ones 6-9 months from now, they'll be the same model but different revision.
That said, I don't see any of the "problems" highlighted in this article as actual problems. We've got one guy who put the battery/hd cover on wrong and bent it, and some nonsense about how Apple won't replace your MacBook if you spill a beer on it. And why should they???
Agree with KSU, it's $1k that shouldn't have needed to be done, not something to jump for joy about. What you should jump for joy about, is that they really don't put up any resistance about repair work inside the warranty period, it gets done fast, and for parts they can ship to you, they do it overnight. I've even had them replace batteries that are 3, 6, 9 months outside the warranty period. For free. - Jibberwalk, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3MBP's still have issues with the slanted keys, loose battery covers, wonky latches, and dust under the glass.
More so, I've heard of a MBP-specific issue with the speaker grill... bunch of dust visible underneath.
I've got a new Macbook, and there aren't any issues with mine -- that I can percieve, anyways. - cerealjynx, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3You have a Pro.
The affected models are not MBP's.
...maybe - MacParrot, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3I don't mind bad reviews. Even when they concern Apple products. Some like the iPod HiFi or even a product in search of a problem like the AppleTV. But don't kid yourself into thinking there isn't a dedicated core group here on digg that do little beyond going to every Apple posting and saying the same crap over and over again.
It's tiresome and they need a new schtick - johndi, on 10/27/2008, -7/+10Don't forget to shield your Macbook for fog! I doubt it would actually destroy the computer. I'm thinking this is either a clueless spokesperson, or an inadvertent slip that the liquid sensors are way too sensitive.
- Urkel, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4I knew I was getting a Macbook when they came out, but I was surprised at what's offered in the PC counterparts. Blu-Ray, Express Slot, HDMI, GPS, Firewire, higher specs etc..
I definitely wouldn't buy one of those because I prefer Mac. But I do wish Apple put more into "cool features" than "pretty design". The aluminum brick is nice but it's not like I've ever bent a notebook in half so if the new design doesn't decrease weight then I'm not sure why it's that big a deal. - peterinjapan, on 10/28/2008, -1/+3I agree, in this market. The Macbook Air by the way is a FABULOUS machine, it's pure joy to use if you're not using four Adobe apps at a time, as I usually am. (More's the pity.)
- _skin_, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Who doesn't love kool-aid!
- dryJ, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2funny, i bought mine about 10 mins before they announced the Notebook Event. Am i annoyed? Not in the least, looking at what they have and haven't got to offer. Firewire? Never use. Mini Display Port and no adapter? Fab. Glossy screen? I already have a mirror.
My first mac,and at least it wasn't one of those new ones. - inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+4so when are they going to fix that god awful ***** glossy display *****.
Anyone who is a professional is absolutely taken back but the slap in the face the removal of matte screens have been.
***** you apple. Adobe CS4 runs on PC too you dick holes. -
