I can't wait to buy a scroll-screen iPod! - jkleinfeld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I think I'm going to start pacing outside the local Apple store, just waiting for the new ipod
actually.. i can't wait! i'm going to freeze myself! - buckaroo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Nah - I want the "Tilt Screen" model:
* dip it left or right for volume
* tilt up for menu
* tilt down for pause
* swirl around for scrolling
* shake once for "select"
* turn upside down to turn off video
* double shake for "I really mean select, damn it"
* throw up in air for shuffle mode
* throw on ground when it's time to buy a new one - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"You could control it without ever taking it out of your pocket!"
You look a little flushed... wait, what the hell are you doing?
I'm... uh... controlling my iPod... that's it... - jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"Just replace "touch" with "scroll"."
scroll-screen models?
I think you mean "Just replace "screen" with "wheel"
"touch-wheel" - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Personally, touch-screen capabilities aren't anything I think the iPod needs...
However, it's the most sensible way to make it button-less so as to make the whole iPod width a widescreen. THATS what really matters, the screen size. - isewise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Original story:

http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/ipod/iPodNotesFeatureGuideCB.pdf - Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -2/+10the amount of factual information in your post astonishes me
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I don't think the "quick-fingered editors" are to be blamed so much as the stupid Mac rumors sites that were so very quick to tell us that a touch-screen iPod was DEFINITELY CONFIRMED when it actually wasn't confirmed at all. It was very obviously a typo and we didn't need Engadget to point that out for us to know that.
- synned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Scrolling in a circle is actually better than scrolling down...you don't have to pull your finger up, go back to the top, and scroll down again. It just doesn't make sense.
A circle is continuous so your finger will never have to lift until you get there. - jeffyjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The PDF now refers to the touch wheel, which I don't think anyone seriously thought wasn't the case in the first place.
- theprez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is yesterday's "news" which wasn't news at all.
http://www.digg.com/apple/Touch_screen_iPod_directly_confirmed_by_Apple
It was a typo or a simple confusion between touchscreen and touchwheel (the first one IS more common to listen to than the second) and what's worse is that engadget doesn''t mention it's source, the link I just posted above, which leads to the original story. I consider this a duplicate. - Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2it's an mp3 player. are you expecting it to do magic tricks or something. if you need more features, buy a laptop
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -3/+4[microsoft joke]
  i thought that was how the zune was going to be controlled
[/microsoft joke] - ultrafez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The quote in the PDF mentioned above now says:
"Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software
version 1.2 or later. All other Notes feature capabilities described in this document are supported for
iPod models beginning with third-generation iPod (dock connector) models with touch wheel."
So it was a typo after all. - wealthyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm with you pagno!!! My IAudio 6 is the ish, touch screen is sweet, looooong battery life and tons more features than any IPOD out there.

- pagno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Im going to be a troll, for once in my life...
***** Apple. Unless they make their trendy little device accessable from anything other than iTunes, id rather trash one than plug it in. Its a nice gadget, dont get me wrong, but iTunes sucks so horribly. I there was a proper way to get music on/off of an iPod, i might have one. Till then, ill stick to my iAudio, with 24hrs of battery life. Plus, Ive seen so many iPods die in Iraq, and my iAudio is still rockin.
Yep, thats the truth and im stickin to it. - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If it is touch screen, I hope they get rid of the wheel concept.
Scrolling in a circle blows, face it. If you could scroll by sliding your finger down the screen, wouldn't that be more comfortable?
And you wouldn't even need to scroll through menu items, since you could simply touch them. Or maybe both interface methods.
One thing I sure *don't * like about the concept of a touch screen, is yet more loss of tactile feedback. When I reach in my pocket to turn up the volume or pause the song, it's hard enough already to find the wheel and turn in the right direction or press the right spot. If it were all touch screen, it'd be impossible to do anything without looking. - scheming, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1it was most likely removed or "fixed" to protect information from being released too early.
- juicygossip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Apple needs to change the iPod anyway. There is nothing out there that is different, all the mp3 players do the say thing give us something new.
- Skinner72, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1You don't touch-scroll the Ipod Screen
It touch-scrolls You!! - flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1they could make the "frame" bit taller than the screen and add buttons there. like how the iMacs currently look. you know with the big white area underneath the screen.
Personally the ipods are so delicate now I don't want to be touching the screen. - bearda, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Is it just me or does page 10 of the PDF linked to not mention the touch-screen at all. Same section listed in the linked image, different text.
Andrew Beard - stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2The ipod does need it if it will be a phone or PDA.
- BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1There just isn't that much I can't do on my non touchscreen model. Perhaps I'm some neophyte that doesn't get the wonders the device could do. I do know, they'd need to work some magic to get the screen more durable.
- Jake2, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3This was posted, what, two days ago on Engadget? And I'm sure I've seen it on Digg already.
- nicnic77, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3STFU!! The Digg rumour mill is making me hate the iPod!
