- Sonicred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3More and more this is starting to feel like a gigantic astroturfing campaign by disgruntled competitors. It's either that or people are being way too dramatic in their exaggerations.
"I've had mine for ONE DAY, and after reading the concerns kept it in a very nice polishing cloth as much as I could, didn't put it in my pocket or anything except fingers touching it, and it's already scratched."
"OK, right. I'll one up you here. MINE IS STILL IN THE BOX AND IT IS SCRATCHING ALL THE TIME LIKE AN INNER CITY DJ!!!1!!1 Careful guys don't even look at it! It will scratch if it senses fear!"
Basically what we have here are random comments on message boards and a whining site set up by one guy who had a problem that is covered by warranty. This isn't an epidemic by any means.
Seriously though I can tell you that this problem has been blown out of proportion at best and is totally BS at worst. I own a Nano and I've owned previous iPods as well. I see no difference in the durability or performance at all. I've had mine for about 2 weeks. I keep it in my pocket at school and when I'm walking between classes. I treat it just like I do all of my other gadgets. It doesn't get any special or preferential treatment at all. Yes there are minor scuffs here and there but the screen is still crystal clear and the thing overall still looks great. I think all of this can be explained away by the fact that the average Nano consumer is obsessive compulsive about the appearance. There, I said it. My roommate has a Zen Micro and guess what? There are scratches on it!
This isn't a unique problem. It's not even a problem at all in my opinion. It's just what happens when you use a product. For the paranoid out there I have the following suggestions. I've ordered them by preference.
1. Get over it. Stop losing sleep over the fact that shiny plastic is not impervious to all fingerprints and damage. Stop posting ridiculous comments on message boards pretending that this is a major blunder. Stop demanding to have Steve Jobs' head on a platter because his company didn't somehow manage to make the casing entirely out of a single diamond. Realize that every gadget scratches.
2. Buy one of the literally HUNDREDS of cases that have been released or are soon to be released.
In short, enjoy your Nano. - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3umm you people have trouble reading. they acknowledged a small problem and said those with that problem should contact applecare and they will be taken care of.
- Jessimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i'm going to refer to darth vader's link.
Everyone: "it was on the internet, so it MUST be true!" - warning9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This needs more publicity...
- krahzee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems to me that some of this has to do with just standard wear & tear, and some of it with some crappy manufacturing.
On one hand, no matter how well a product is designed, if a person abuses it enough (drops it, closes it in a car door, sits on it, ect...), it can be broken. Case in point, my cell phone had a problem and needed to be exchanged. The first thing the tech did was have me take off the battery and look at spot on the back of the phone that will actually change color if it gets wet. He explained that this was so the company would know if I dropped it in standing water(I hadn't), which my warranty did not cover. Had I sent it in after dropping it in water the repair would have been charged to my bill.
This is also a good lesson in patience, since an item like this will always have the potential for manufacturing issues within the first several months of release. Sometimes it's best to wait a while on the latest and newest, at least until the problems & fixes with the item are well known. This is the whole reason I never buy an new version of a particular software or PC preloaded with an OS right after the newest version is released. Let someone else get stressed with the bugs, I'll upgrade when it's a little more stable. - DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should deal with this, I'm sure it wouldn't cost but a few cents to put that new coating TDK developed for Blue Ray discs on them... Sounds like that stuff is nearly bulletproof...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually Steve Jobs did "shove it[the Nano] in his pocket" at the September 7th media event. By doing that he was implying that Apple expected people to be putting the Nano in their pockets.
- iSamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also have a Creative Zen Xtra 40GB, and hate it with a passion.
It is the worst electronic device I've ever used.
What a waste of money. - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can always contact applecare. or go to a genius bar in the apple store for free. You get one call to apple care for free however applecare is always free if it is a hardware issue... they would only charge if it is software/user error
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You've got 90 days of Applecare even if you don't buy in.
As for the scratches on the screen, it's hard to make that out if it's the same material as the 4Gs. Maybe people are putting the nano in tighter, more constricted pockets because they CAN?
There is a polish for iPod screens, which apparently works pretty well. Somebody knows what that is? - darthleppard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i assume you can't "contact applecare" unless you purchased applecare with your nano. what about the others?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apple the "hardware" company.
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050927-5358.html
Yeah, that's the business I want to be in. You know... the business where you have to head-off class action suits at the pass and just take the financial hit on your bottom line with the hope that you don't get punished in the marketplace *AND* the court room.
Memo to Jobs:
Try selling software instead; when was the last time you saw microsoft offer a refund or take back a product for being faulty? At some point in your business life, you need to acknowledge the things that you have been consistently bad at doing. For Apple, this constant would be the quality of the hardware Apple produces. Sure, Microsoft sells hardware too, but they do that to subsidies their software, duh. Realistically, if Apple fails to move out of the hardware business in a significant, meaningful way, they might as well be in the horse wippe and buggy carriage business. - heff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm not sure why but i actually believe this guy. it's odd to see a company responding so directly to criticism like this.
- Breadstick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They shouldn't have shipped the nano's before they manufactured the nanosleeves. I ordered my nano and my sleeves on the same day; my ipod arrived several seeks ago, and my sleeves have not even shipped yet. Now my screen is completely scratched up from just carrying it around in my pocket.
- FuzzyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's just one problem with Apple's solution to the scratching issue: There are no cases for the Nano yet, at least none that are readily available. I ordered a set of "Nano tubes" with my Nano the day after launch and they haven't even shipped yet. Meanwhile, my Nano has been getting scratched to hell over the last couple of weeks, just in regular daily usage.
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^what he said^
- Jyakku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DrMerle - do you have a link on the blue ray coating?

Apple is gaining a bad reputation over a very small amount of people. The media is also trying to scare people about possible cracked screens. ITS CALLED A WARRANTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - tacocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have owned iPod's since the second gen. 10 GB was first released.
Scratches were a problem then and a problem now. The iPod mini was the only exception.
Though scratches should be expected that does not mean they are OK.
Fix this Apple, it will ruin your credibility and my stock portfolio! - hugo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, Creative Zen's are looking better and better everyday.
- iSamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha jrsims, I almost feel like doing that myself.
- JDOG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whatever. I am not going to throw down $30 for FIVE cases for ONE player that doesnt even offer screen protection (the number one thing worth protecting).
The point is not that nobody has complained about the plastic you have been using, its about the fact that there are much better materials you could be using and that obviously this one seems to be quite a bit more scratch prone than other iPods.
The problem is so easily solved...I just dont get it. - iaskedTGT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How did you people expect them to respond? Look at how they always respond-"it's only a small problem with a few, stay bent over!" Get a REFUND or just do a charge back.
- jrsims, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sorry. This is BS. I've been so careful with my Nano and it still got scratched. 4 friends of mine bought Nanos and are experiencing the same problems. Apple screwed the pooch big time and now they're like "Buy our protective covers to fix the problem!"
Anyway, while I was in the Apple store today (checking to see if the Nano Tube covers had arrived yet), I noticed that even the old 20GB iPod display models were in way better condition than the Nanos that had been on display for only a couple weeks. Enraged, I went to all the computers in the store and covertly changed all the Safari browsers to point to the following article at startup:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/cmp/20050927/tc_cmp/171200791;_ylt=Ai57PIAUs9di_iVRzmgDw9IjtBAF;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl
What can I say? I feel totally jipped! What the *****, Apple??? - Intensecure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^ Agree - get refunds, return the product, make them notice it the hard way - in the bank account.
- iSamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had mine for ONE DAY, and after reading the concerns kept it in a very nice polishing cloth as much as I could, didn't put it in my pocket or anything except fingers touching it, and it's already scratched. I don't want apple's tubes and speck's stuff hasnt started shipping yet :
- sleepless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are just trying to make more money from selling the el-cheapo protective cases.
- sgtstadanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jeez people....its a mp3 player. you tote it around with you all over the place, it has screen, its gonna get some scratches in it. I have one, and yes it has a couple of scratches...big freakin deal. Does its still play? Yes. Get over it.
- mikataur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I suppose the good news in this is that newcomers are still buying iPods. (I thought the only people still buying iPods might be existing iPod owners entranced by the Nano's beauty, ie, saturated market for iPods and all that.)
How do I figure this? Well, if it was existing iPod owners they'd know that they pick up faint scratches easily, and wouldn't be squawking like this about something that someone like me (a 1st gen 5GB iPod owner) have known about since 2001.
Of course, they could be Mini owners which have aluminum cases that don't scratch in the same way as polyurethane, so that could be a flaw in my theory. - SaintStryfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ummm... microsoft doesn't have many returns because it sells software: in that, have you ever gotten opened software returned without a big thing? I know for sure at my store I don't give returns on opened software. I don't get my money back, so no! Only exchange.
- WonkoTheSane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just remember that apple fans tend to be a loud bunch (for good and bad)
- TheButcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll have to agree, iPods scratch very easily. They always have. Seriously though, you're all a bunch of crybaby bitches. Ever think of not putting your Nanos in your pockets? True, that is Apple advertising catch, but come on. Every iPod has scratched easily, wouldn't that be a little indication that you shouldn't put it in your pocket without some sort of protection? I was pissed when I took my 60GB Photo out of the box and it was instantly scratched, but the first thing I did was buy a cover for it. I know there are no covers available for the Nano yet, but use some common sense, use it lightly until one is available.
- jmichaelg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yo! earthtoandy! Try re-reading the article before you comment on other people's reading comprehension skills. Apple has only agreed to exchange the broken screen iPods. Apple isn't acknowledging that the scratched screens warrant an exchange. For the scratched screen customers, Apple's literally saying "put a sock on it..."
Looks like what folks with scratched screens have to do is crack the screen to get the exchange.
What's really sad about this is the lawyers will crank up another class action, Apple will pay the lawyers off and the customers will still end up getting screwed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> darth_vader, do you realize the huge percetnage of people that
> have NEVER had any real probelm with a Microsoft product?
> Pretty much that same 99%.
As somebody who make a fairly decent living supporting 400+ users in their day to day struggle with Microsoft's numerous and abundantly flawed products, I would suggest that, not only are you living in a fantasy land, but that you should probably lay off the crack while you're there. - mikataur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mmwahhahaha... All part of my cunning plan to have the Nano tank so Apple will have to remember they still make Macs.
Question though, what's next in the pattern:
1. iPod + iMac.
2. iPod Mini + Mac Mini.
3. iPod Nano + __________.
I've got a top pocket and I'm waiting Apple...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> Of course, they could be Mini owners which have aluminum
> cases that don't scratch in the same way as polyurethane,
> so that could be a flaw in my theory.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: the extruded aluminum case of the mini was a stroke of god-damned genius. The problem with apple is that each successive design must be "different" (it's not just a campaign slogan at Apple). I'm not quite sure if this is a problem with Apple's favorite design house or the folks at apple that greenlight the ideas put before them. When you hit on a good design strategy, you need to stick with its formula, only changing the parts that are deficient (I don't give a flying crap about your design or art credentials, form follows function and that's just the way it is; good design is an evolutionary riff from the successfully revolutionary. anything else is a personal art project or a complete waste of time depending on the application and point of reference).
Look, trying new and different things is great, but how hard would it have been to talk to TDK about coating the nano's plastic case with their new scratch resistant coating?
Apple has strayed from the path and now they will pay the wages of their sin. - iaskedTGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Grow up! Just RETURN the piece of junk already!
- jstene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Read the messages that have been posted on the Apple discussion boards about this issue - nearly all of them appear to have been posted by first time iPod owners as evidenced by their number of previous posts. Just so happens that most of us knew about this *problem* years ago when we ran out and bought our first 5 gig iPod's - why do think iPod cases have sold well? With the introduction of the Nano there's a new army of first time iPod owners that are discovering this.
- wiu_life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone with a Nano saying theirs doesn't scratch please take your fingernail and lightly drag it across the entire unit and you tell me if yours scratches and take video :) The screen on my mini does not scratch like the nano does. It's funny, I've had the ipod sock on my nano and try to leave it in there. When I pull it out of the sock the sock scratches the nano's front fascia.
The article says "many" cases and there aren't. Again, I've kept mine in the ipod sock since day 1 and it scratches pulling the nano out. Meguiars Plastx ( http://www.meguiars.com/?clear-plastic-care/PlastX-Clear-Plastic-Cleaner-Polish )should be able to take em out. I haven't cared enough to goto the garage and get my bottle to attempt and take out the scratches but apple should put some sort of different coating on the fronts of the nanos. I can throw my cell phone on the ground on the front plastic screen and it doesn't scratch. These things shouldn't be that delicate. I had a black creative zen micro that I had in my pocket, it was all plastic same as the nano, and I never got any scratches on that. I was a lot harsher on the zen micro too than my mini or nano. I'll try to get some pics of my nano up. Mine isn't as bad as the ones I've seen where people have theirs in their pockets for a day but there are a few scratches. - punkrock4life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont understand how someone could put their nano in their pocket and not expect it to get scratched up. apple didnt shove it in your pocket for you. learn how to be responsible and take care of your purchases before blaming the manufacturer for normal wear and tear.
- icu_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"They shouldn't have shipped the nano's before they manufactured the nanosleeves. I don't understand why Apples puts out portable devices that can't withstand normal daily usage without damage. People just accept it because it looks cool out of the box, but I need something I can shove in my pocket and drop occasionally without penalty.
Well I do understand that they get to sell their 'sleeves' and get people to buy new units due to scratches. Ok so the Nano has bee proved to be ruggedish (being solid-state) but cmon Apple people are not walking down the street bopping around with the think in their hands.
'Apple has strayed from the path and now they will pay the wages of their sin.' ROFL - Leech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0creative DAPs kick ipod asses.. ever!
- jmichaelg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"we do not think this is a widespread issue.." isn't much of a response. If it's not a widespread issue, why is Apple refusing to exchange the damaged Nanos? Looks to me like Apple is blowing customers off again.
- wiu_life, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0“We have received very few calls from customers reporting this problem – we do not think this is a widespread issue, said Schiller. “If customers are concerned about scratching we suggest they use one of the many iPod nano cases to protect their iPod.
