- Retuow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21shall we make all program updates front-page news?? :S
- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Just to point out: this fixes the MOAB 1-1-2007 bug among other vulnerabilities.
- unixer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15@baxtermaddux
It is for windows but not on the mac. - goosnargh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12* Because Apple has some revolutionary codecs.
Huh? I really hope you don't mean H.264 and AAC were created by Apple... - xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Even as a Mac user I say there is no reason for this to be front page news. If you are using a Mac, the update manager notifies you automatically.
As for the Quicktime being ***** comment, it isn't on a Mac. It is a lifesaver on the mac. - unixer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@ baxtermaddux
I mean on windows it is an "add on" that douse not work well as on the mac. On the mac it is as integrated as windows media player is in windows. - Michalson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I thought DRM was a bad thing according to so many people...
*Apple* DRM is the foundation of music and video purchased from Apple. As long as you don't buy into Apple's vendor lockin monopoly where every piece of media you buy can only be played on something purchased by Apple, you are fine.
And where exactly is this "revolutionary" codec? The most advanced codec in Quicktime is their implimentation of H.264, which they did not invent, nor is their implementation that great (in fact my greatest complaint is that is actually quiet slow compared to almost every other implimentation I've seen both open and commercial - though this may not be entirely the fault of the individual codec, the whole player has always been a bit clunky) - my8086, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I don't think it needs to be on the front page...but I do like and use quicktime in windows and os x. It's much more responsive than WMP, and you can actually scrub the timeline without waiting :40 for media player to refresh. And QT pro does a hell of a lot for $30. I use it almost everyday for simple editing, compression, resizing, etc. on both platforms.
- Sphonix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10There are alternatives to quicktime: investigate quicktime alternative, it allows you to play quicktime files in other players. I used it personally a long time ago, but it was buggy back then, have a try if it really is annoying in Windows.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm - brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I actually didn't have a problem on my 15" C2D MBP.
Damn, that sucks :( But I'm pretty sure it didn't "kill" your MBP... just your system folder.
Try booting up in target mode and transferring all your personal data to another computer or something and do a fresh install :P - brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Having both a mac and several PCs... I must agree that Quicktime is *much* less obnoxious on the mac. However, I still never end up using it because I use VLC (http://videolan.org/vlc/) to play all my media. It works for pretty much everything so i don't have a real reason to watch it on QT.
The only thing I actually use QT for is watching the HD trailers from apple.com... they force you to use QT... damn browser links. - neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Your uptime number is more important than security? Good luck with that badge of honor.
- aristobrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In OS X, there's a HUGE difference between the QuickTime Player and QuickTime "a software layer of OS X that runs above the kernel, providing 2000 APIs for any OS X application to hook into".
http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/osx/arch_sys.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6replace "Apple" with "Sony" and you would be correct
- marc26uk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yeah I was thinking the same thing. You know it's a slow news day when you see an article for "choosing the right sunglasses for your face shape" followed by an article about a security update. Both front page.
C'mon people, we can digg deeper than this. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9are we going to submit a digg article for every mundane security update for Windows, too?
- artfuldodga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This update actually fixed an Audio issue i've had with Quicktime for about 1 year (skipping), must of been lack of support for my Soundcard. Anyway, thanks Apple for fixing this problem so quickly :P ...
- eH9116, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4hey I was editing that....so they changed it now and its easy to get Quicktime by itself, but why make this front page news? when was the last time "insert popular game here" had an update on the front page? don't diggers play games more than they play with Quicktime?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> I'm a Mac user, and I still have to say - who cares?
300 digg readers and counting. - umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I prefer Superduper to CCC. Just seems to be more solid in my opinion. But thanks for the warning, I'll be waiting now.
Also, granted it was nice to get a warning about this, but it kind of amazes me that this is on the frontpage. - trudyscousin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason this particular bug fix has garnered this much attention is that it comes in response to a stunt called "Month of Apple Bugs," or MOAB.
MOAB has caused some controversy, not because they're reporting bugs, but because they're not sharing with Apple the results of their findings before publishing them. Not only that, but many of the bugs have nothing to do with software produced by Apple, but with third-party applications. As a result, some are viewing MOAB as a less-than-altruistic endeavor, and its two researchers as holding some sort of a grudge against Apple.
http://projects.info-pull.com/moab/ - jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4why would you, when you can get the same old *****, in better quality, for free, using open source codecs, without drm, all over the net?
- hmemcpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"What do they call those programs that are running, that show in the right hand side of the tray?"
Minimized to tray. - N1XUK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5VLC for mac is swet, does conversion and multi-region dvds if i remember also..... Plus the killer feature? No paying apple a quicktime pro registration for full screen videos! But if you must use apple software, full screen is free in itunes!
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4TSR? uhm, this isn't 1992 you know.
- immrlizard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Try the quicktime alternative. The bugs have been fixed and it works really well. While you are at it go for real alternative too.
- hochmann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm a Mac user, and I still have to say - who cares? This is what Software Update is for. If you're "l33t" enough to be surfing Digg, you're probably "l33t" enough to have Software Update checking regularly for this sort of thing.
This is not worthy of the front page on Digg. *MAYBE* if there was a security section or something, this *MIGHT* be worth putting there... But it sure as hell should not have made it to the front page. Now if this was for something that was being widely and rapidly exploited, sure... But last I checked, there were not massive-scale worms rampaging around because of this QuickTime flaw. - zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Quicktime is pretty sad on both windows and MAC. I prefer a nice and light VLC.
- eatrains, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's annoying to go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and click one radio button?
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg's story description should say Mac OS X only. It doesn't fix Windows' QT. :)
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5would it? i, like most people are not using a mac. why'd we care? surely if i was on a mac i'd have been notified by software update, already?
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In fact, many professional apps including AVID, Adobe stuff rely on Quicktime for Windows too.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The real news is that it took them 23 days. Nice response time for a critical vulnerability.
http://news.com.com/Apple+plugs+zero-day+QuickTime+flaw/2100-1002_3-6152675.html?tag=nefd.top - r3z0nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think there was a bit of sarcasm from troelsbay, because if it says Apple in the title it's on the damn frontpage
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7It's actually not bad on the Mac. It's ***** than ***** on Windows tho.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I agree. It's pure nagware. Go with the QT alternative.
- marcusb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Why is Apple making my PC unsafe?
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah for some reason the Windows player is horrible, while I love the Mac version. Just plays nicer on Macs.
- Phisolo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3** Warning **
This update just killed my MacBook Pro
An alert at the end of the install said "Update failed" "Please download and try again".
Then my system slowed to a crawl. It took over 5 minutes to close the running apps and restart. Now I have the "? folder" on my startup screen. Apparently this killed my system folder.
I would wait a day or three before you run this update.
Thank god I ran Carbon Copy Cloner last night. - seaners, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I agree, QT Pro is ace, i'd also say, no need for the 30 bucks, just google a serial number.
As I paid zero dollars for QT Pro I think its a great piece of software.
Lets be honest, whoever said its slow....dude, you really need a faster comp
This shouldn't be front page news, but, I must say I used quicktime everyday, and just because of the integration its worth using, let alone the features.
A number of people talking about VLC, in the usual, "we are talking about a product, lets mention the open source version for the hell of it", kinda way, I just don' think its as clean, and its not built into the OS, so, do I want to use it everyday? No, Do I keep it so I can say I have it? Basically - plgonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2is this really news? - and i am a mac fan!
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6quicktime, as a media player on the mac, imo, is just as bad as quicktime on the pc.
is it easy to add new codecs to? no
can it do fullscreen for free? no (YTF not!?)
can it vsynch video playerback? no
does it insist on using up far too much screen realestate? yes
does it suffer pathetic security vulnerabilities that leave your system open to attacks? yes
if you're on a mac owners i would suggest vlc, or mplayer, but even these aren't that great.
if you're on a pc, get quicktime alternative, and save your system resources and sanity and go for quicktime alternative. - eH9116, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I agree, Quicktime is pretty damn worthless on PC, not to mention making front page news for a standard update is pretty lame....
- QuantumLo0p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thank you MOAB and Apple for addressing this!
- neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It is required if you buy music or videos from Apple ITM. If you do not... clearly it is not for you.
- eH9116, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3that's fair i suppose, but then why is it also so annoying to find the lone quicktime installer....all they want to do is shove iTunes down your throat so you can pay the highest price possible for digital media
- mhanley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Did not require a restart, if you use the Apple Software Update tool to install it.
- phmcd10, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Check it out the iPhone ringtone. All articles are iPhone related so take a look and leave your comments.
http://www.i-phoneinc.com - AeroSquid, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4restart? no thanks. my uptime>*
- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5Its not that bad on Mac becuase there is a lack of alternatives.
