- TomK88, on 06/10/2008, -21/+111Does it address the issue of constantly installing itself and updating when I tried to install iTunes only? Almost as bad as RealPlayer.
- Zippo, on 06/10/2008, -8/+30I think that only applies to the Windows installer... The Mac installers for iTunes and Quicktime are standalone.
Besides, iTunes requires Quicktime for video content.- TomK88, on 06/10/2008, -9/+39I don't use a Mac though, nor do I play videos through iTunes. I just want iTunes to listen to music and update my iPod, period. I don't want all this bundled software that does nothing but hog system resources and annoy me.
- sjmulder, on 06/10/2008, -1/+37I believe iTunes uses Quicktime for all the codecs.
- knoxchris, on 06/10/2008, -2/+6You can disable all the systray crap and random downloading it does. Deep within the options menu though, much like Real Player. :/
- hillkiwi, on 06/10/2008, -8/+12@TomK88
I'm with you, it's almost not worth installing iTunes because of that.
@DorkTard
Get the ***** off digg - this is a site for 'grown ups'. - AvidPreatorian, on 06/10/2008, -2/+5dorktard ... angry little virgin :/

***** YOU, YOU ***** COCKSUCKING PEICE OF ***** *****, WHY DONT YOU JUST GET THE ***** OF DIGG AND GO SUCK YOUR DADS ***** SOME MORE - DarkDx, on 06/10/2008, -1/+8"this is a site for 'grown ups'." haha, yes right.
- mrsteveman1, on 06/11/2008, -1/+3^ see? grown ups :D
- migitalwarfare, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3how hard is it for people to understand that itunes is an extension of quicktime? you can have quicktime without itunes, but you can't have itunes without quicktime. if you don't like it, there are plenty of other media players available for you to use.
- phoomp, on 06/10/2008, -4/+16So, Apples only employs poor software practices on it's Windows software?
- ferrite, on 06/10/2008, -4/+15When in Rome...
- migitalwarfare, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2what did you expect, apple to develop itunes as an interface for windows media player? it's not a standalone program, it extends the usability of quicktime. if you don't have quicktime, there's nothing for itunes to extend
- Raian, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1I don't think it's for video content only-- it's actually what apple uses to render the iTunes music store.
- TomK88, on 06/10/2008, -9/+39I don't use a Mac though, nor do I play videos through iTunes. I just want iTunes to listen to music and update my iPod, period. I don't want all this bundled software that does nothing but hog system resources and annoy me.
- abbathdoom, on 06/10/2008, -20/+16iTunes needs Quicktime to run. Noob.
If you were moaning about Safari then sure, but no quicktime means itunes no work. - john2kx, on 06/10/2008, -4/+7I find it works out best when I just avoid bloated software (iTunes+Quicktime) altogether.
For quicktime, use QT Lite, and for RealPlayer, use Real Alternative.- Kral, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4Even better, just refuse to view anything in QuickTime or RealPlayer formats which will either effectively kill those two malware players or force them to stop being *****.
- dragon76, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1A) I thought Real already went bankrupt thanks to the ill-conceived Rhapsody
B) Everything is Flash online now, anyway
- dragon76, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1A) I thought Real already went bankrupt thanks to the ill-conceived Rhapsody
- Kral, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4Even better, just refuse to view anything in QuickTime or RealPlayer formats which will either effectively kill those two malware players or force them to stop being *****.
- boogie, on 06/10/2008, -5/+7On a Mac, the quicktime experience works seamlessly. On a PC, well, just try to understand the Apple way of doing things. Realplayer wanted to install spyware, iTunes & Quicktime : consider it a suite.
Just try to understand, like I try to enjoy the Windows experience at work, on its own level. PC & Mac-soft are complementary, not rivals...- jerrycurley, on 06/10/2008, -11/+3I think yo mean "try to understnad that Apple Fanoby perspective that I will give."
IT is REALLY pathetic for you to basically say "When RealPlayer does it, it is spyware...when Appl edoes it, it is a bonus!" crap.
And rememmber...You can beg and beg, and still, at no point will Steve Jobs unzip his fly and let you suck away.- swordphish, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2RealPlayer is evil. If you don't agree, you are evil too.
- migitalwarfare, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2realplayer was garbage from the beginning, the quality sucked, the software sucked, and the software installed ***** on your computer that it doesn't need in order to run.
itunes offers a lot of useful services, the quality is just as good, if not better, than the competition, and the only other thing it installs is quicktime, which it needs in order to run.
you have it in your head that itunes is a standalone, it's not. it would be like trying to install windows without a system32 folder, and expecting it to work. i fail to see how realplayer and itunes are at all related.
also, i don't see you getting all uppity about every single windows application you install throwing folders all over your system in order to work properly. itunes is no different. lets keep it on a level playing field
- fumpt, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2If you can teach me to enjoy using Windows at work I will make you a wealthy person.
- jerrycurley, on 06/10/2008, -11/+3I think yo mean "try to understnad that Apple Fanoby perspective that I will give."
- sulman, on 06/11/2008, -0/+9the other posters have good points but the key point is that QuickTime is a major component of iTunes. That's how coverflow, movie rentals, podcast and many other things work in iTunes.
- zdiggler, on 06/11/2008, -2/+5I hate quicktime for trying to keep sneaking in a startup, qtask.exe
- Zippo, on 06/10/2008, -8/+30I think that only applies to the Windows installer... The Mac installers for iTunes and Quicktime are standalone.
- rufusdog, on 06/10/2008, -3/+51Uncheck the option to automatically update iTunes and Quicktime when you first install it. Then, launch the Quicktime player and go to Edit > Preferences > Quicktime Preferences >Update and uncheck the automatic update box. Finally open up regedit and remove the Quicktime and Apple applications from the Run list under HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version.
They don't make it easy!!!- ungajava, on 06/11/2008, -2/+6I seriously thought Apple was better than this.
- migitalwarfare, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2you'd think microsoft would be held to the same standards, but i guess not
- mrsteveman1, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4I think you can just use msconfig.....
- ungajava, on 06/11/2008, -2/+6I seriously thought Apple was better than this.
- Rauby, on 06/10/2008, -25/+5Quick Time on Mac is almost so horrible than WMP on Windows.
- rebotfc, on 06/10/2008, -2/+13But better than your Grammar ?
- mrsteveman1, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5Why? If you mean the player, sure, but if you mean the media framework wtf are you talking about?
The player works quite well for what i use it for on my mac, a basic video player that took the place of media player classic on windows.
- Akadjjoel, on 06/10/2008, -21/+13QuickCrap!

- solidus636, on 06/10/2008, -2/+32Well played.
- uhhNo, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10, sir.
- KMartSheriff, on 06/10/2008, -3/+15I guess you could somewhat call me a Mac "fanboy" and even I hate Quicktime. VLC ftw. Installing iTunes in Windows is fine until it wants to install Quicktime with it. Hopefully "Quicktime X" will be more of a background app than a wannabe standalone player.
- rumblpak, on 06/10/2008, -8/+2unless of course you need subtitles. then you should use k-lite mega codec pack or perian (pc or mac).
- blackrave, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6What do you mean? VLC plays all subtitles I've had use for natively.
- mrsteveman1, on 06/11/2008, -2/+6I get what you're saying, but EVERY video i have ever given to VLC, it was completely unable to seek correctly, sure it gets within 5 minutes of the mark i point it at but thats about it.
Plus, it relies on libavcodec to play stuff on most platforms, and the support for some codecs in libavcodec is horrible.
I think VLC does use DSHOW on windows though, so thats native.- blackrave, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1Older versions used to have inaccurate seeking, but if you use the newest one, you should be able to click anywhere on the seeker bar and it will play from that exact position.
- LaweranceOak, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2Perian added to quicktime trumps VLC!
- solidus636, on 06/10/2008, -2/+32Well played.
- weird0science, on 06/10/2008, -4/+19Probably still won't work with the Windows version of iTunes...I prefer QTAlternative.
http://digg.com/apple/iTunes_Not_Working_In_Window ... - luke16, on 06/10/2008, -7/+34Apple trailers is the only reason i have Quicktime.
- kevdude421, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7 Me too, I use it for nothing else. If only I could use VLC with the Apple trailer site...
- hillkiwi, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3Agreed. As much as I hate it - when I plug the 42" into my laptop nothing handles the second monitor as well as Quicktime (can't get anything else to the precise resolution I need [both devices are pretty crappy]).
- Radan, on 06/10/2008, -3/+11You know, it's too bad that Apple has been forcing Quicktime upon the PC-users in such way that they have, as it has thereby got a lot of bad rep it doesn't really deserve if you ask me. On the Mac at least, Quicktime is a great player, which is more stable and plays the content far better than any other player, including VLC I have ever used. Just take something as simple like the fact that Quicktime takes in consideration of the overscan that happens on many screens, and resizes the video so that it perfectly fits the screen.
- RyeBrye, on 06/10/2008, -4/+9Wow, an article about someone releasing a minor update without "quietly" in the title? I (quietly) never thought I'd see the day.
- Radan, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Seriously, I love reading about even the most minor update from Apple, but this is just ridiculous. Security update for Quicktime? Come on!
- phoomp, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Nothing from Apple is released "quietly". *Apple* may release it "quietly", but you'll hear fanboys cheering over even the most minor thing. For such great software, they sure get excited over bug and security fixes.
- gametavern, on 06/10/2008, -13/+5please stop trying to update yourself quicktime. Almost as bad as AIM. "new update every two hours"
- digitallysick, on 06/10/2008, -15/+17Does anyone really use quicktime? I only use it to play embedded mpegs but other than that its vlc all the way
- svensksvamp, on 06/10/2008, -1/+18On the mac, quicktime replaces vlc with the help of the codecpack "perian".
so yeah, I use quicktime all the time.- digitallysick, on 06/10/2008, -4/+3I have perian, but i still use vlc, i see no advantage of quicktime?
- thunderer, on 06/10/2008, -4/+3Same here. Most of the clips I watch aren't all that beautifully encoded, so speedy access to de-interlacing, cropping, and sound retiming gives VLC a definite leg up.
- markthegoth, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Front row has to use quicktime
- svensksvamp, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Front Row + Apple Remote, do I have to say anything else? =)
- mrsteveman1, on 06/11/2008, -0/+7Because VLC can't seek files correctly and has a horrible interface?
- Kakcoo, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3Any fanboys in here?
VLC is a good player and handles broken files good (Quicktime doesn't seem to do that at all). But VLC aren't that good on precise rewinding and forwarding in my experience, and i need that. :-)
- digitallysick, on 06/10/2008, -4/+3I have perian, but i still use vlc, i see no advantage of quicktime?
- antdude, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2QuickTime Alternative/Lite for me. I don't use iTunes. Too bad no alternatives have Music Store.
- dalesmatrix, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5Lots of applications make use of Quicktime on the mac, probably without you knowing it.
- svensksvamp, on 06/10/2008, -1/+18On the mac, quicktime replaces vlc with the help of the codecpack "perian".
- mfhayes, on 06/10/2008, -17/+12QuickTime is useless unless you have Pro.
- DRock4776, on 06/10/2008, -1/+17Dawn M Fredette agrees.
- suntzusputnik, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Pablo/nop FTW
- 1807, on 06/10/2008, -12/+13Quicktime is like my own personal hell...a bunch of updates that change absolutly nothing. I think the real reason they update it so much is because people download cracked versions of the software.
- jerrycurley, on 06/10/2008, -8/+2No...you are not alone in that hell. Quciktime is hell to everyone but the most pathetic Apple fanboys.
- iczman, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1I think all you need is a keygen...
- HolyChimp, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4If they were that bothered about cracked software then the serial I've been using for 2 years wouldn't still work....
- IDiggDrSiN, on 06/10/2008, -14/+20Great. When will they allow Quicktime Alternative development to continue?
Quicktime went the way of Realplayer along time ago- BenKenobi88, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4except for embedded mpegs, and that's sometimes the only format available on a site.
- john2kx, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7quicktime alternative is no more.. search for QT Lite.
- IDiggDrSiN, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Thanks for that , I'll look it up
- gplpark92, on 06/10/2008, -10/+24VLC
- WombleSlayer, on 06/10/2008, -14/+4If I wanted filth on my PC, I'd install Vista.
- Weejay, on 06/10/2008, -14/+3Quicktime haha. What's next? RealPlayer?
- awurthmann, on 06/10/2008, -10/+0*yawn* More stories of McCain being McCain, less stories about Apple improving an app that no one that doesn't use a Mac really needs anymore. VLC and or QuickTime Alternative FTW!
- mackycorp, on 06/10/2008, -5/+16Just get QT Lite. It's already been updated for Quicktime 7.5
http://www.codecguide.com/qt_lite.htm - Thrilltone, on 06/10/2008, -16/+10I paid for Quicktime Pro years ago. Computer crashed and I was never able to get any help from Apple in reinstating the Pro. What is their company motto? "Who Cares" ?
Adobe should make a player. They've got all the best software, especially since they bought Macromedia.- weizilla, on 06/10/2008, -3/+9all the best software? like adobe acrobat which is bloated as hell and leaches onto every single toolbar and corner of your system?
- knoxchris, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3Learn to uncheck install options, atleast it has them unlike QT.
- adc86, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7Acrobat + plugins > 1 GB
For working with PDFs. Illustrator isn't even that big. - tian2992, on 06/10/2008, -2/+1You know, when you buy it, they give you a Serial Key, just put it in! (that's what SHE said!). Is not THAT hard (is what SHE said). (damn XKCD!)
- john2kx, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2"[Adobe]'s got all the best software..."
LOL. - nycmac247, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4"was never able to get any help from Apple in reinstating the Pro"
- like the part where you write down your serial number so that you can install QT and then unlock Pro?
- weizilla, on 06/10/2008, -3/+9all the best software? like adobe acrobat which is bloated as hell and leaches onto every single toolbar and corner of your system?
- Scipio, on 06/10/2008, -9/+19Why is this on the front page?
- MoralThreat, on 06/10/2008, -5/+15You're new here aren't you?
- Skahara, on 06/10/2008, -4/+12Apple.
- felix21685, on 06/10/2008, -4/+2maybe the keynote speech will load better than 1 out of 4 times with this version.
- TBR2007, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Download the podcast, it should only take you about 20mins
- tomazkovacic, on 06/10/2008, -10/+5On behalf of the linux community: "Who gives a *****?"
- Thekirby45, on 06/10/2008, -13/+16a update to a bloated software exciting...
- TBR2007, on 06/10/2008, -3/+5I actually find quicktime pro useful at work, but agree, for watching films it's VLC FTW
- jerrycurley, on 06/10/2008, -3/+0Honestly...I am not being a dick, but why does everyone ejaculate to thoughts of VLC? Yes, I have it because it runs pretty mcuh ever media format. But for things that run on Media Player Classic, I use that every tiume. Fine seeking is awful in VLC. The tine volume control is too hard to fine tune as well. And unless I am missing something, you can't bring up the controls when you are in full screen mode like you can with MPC by bringing the pointer to the bottom of the screen.
- suntzusputnik, on 06/10/2008, -2/+6Pablo/nop ftw!
- DarkDx, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1hehehehe
- freakstyle571, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Actually I am pretty sure that is the reason why my Quicktime is F*$@ed up right now. Since I upgraded with that I haven't been able to connect over wi-fi to the iTunes Music Store on my MacBook. Anyone else having that issue?
I did digg you up though, I love being able to convert video on my own

http://www.mediamonkey.com/ - ARanc, on 06/10/2008, -5/+4Its okay when they announce the new Wine version, but Quicktime?
- koick, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1They?
- vspazv, on 06/10/2008, -2/+6It would be nice to have an 'update' that doesnt require a complete reinstallation of the product.
- nocturnoculto, on 06/10/2008, -10/+5why does everyone hate QT so much?
- Chassit, on 06/10/2008, -4/+16Because it is an intrusive piece of *****.
- uhhNo, on 06/10/2008, -7/+8because you cant make it play full screen without paying them for an upgraded version. and it tries to update itself all the time...
- tian2992, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3And while in Mac is a decent player (great if you have Perian), it sucks in Windows...
- Burn, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2...that was fixed a year ago. If you allowed it to install one of those updates you hate so much you'd know that.
- uhhNo, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1my updating of it involved me uninstalling it because it was a piece of *****.
- dsgamer, on 06/10/2008, -2/+5because it doesnt work. I ended up watching the entire stevenote with un-synced audio. very anoying
- Skahara, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4Because it sucks.
- john2kx, on 06/10/2008, -2/+7Because it's bloated, you can't install iTunes without it, and a better alternative exists.
- kmotiv1, on 06/10/2008, -5/+17Whats with the QT hate? QT + Perian plays pretty much everything on earth.
- tian2992, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10Because in Mac is a decent player but, it sucks in Windows...
- HolyChimp, on 06/11/2008, -2/+2And because each 'update' is around 50MB.
That's not an update, that's a whole new program.
- matt3454, on 06/10/2008, -9/+9Quicktime made its self the the default program for ALL my image and video files. Most annoying.
Upgrade to Pro for only £29.99*- drcreek, on 06/10/2008, -2/+13Don't mindlessly click next during the install. It actually asks you things for a reason.
- sg7791, on 06/10/2008, -6/+11Look, everyone needs to realize that Apple doesn't know how to make PC apps. But Quicktime, iTunes and Safari are all very nice on a Mac.
- john2kx, on 06/10/2008, -5/+13If they've proven they can't do anything right on a PC, why would we consider switching to a Mac?
- mrBitch, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4So by that logic, does that mean that Microsoft Office (which is a broken piece of ***** on the Mac) means that MS don't know how to code anything on the Mac?
Why should I switch to Windows if MS can't do anything right on a Mac?
- mrBitch, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4So by that logic, does that mean that Microsoft Office (which is a broken piece of ***** on the Mac) means that MS don't know how to code anything on the Mac?
- john2kx, on 06/10/2008, -5/+13If they've proven they can't do anything right on a PC, why would we consider switching to a Mac?
- eggballs, on 06/10/2008, -3/+19Since when is a minor software update important enough for a major headline?
Oh, that's right. It's Apple. - nmanguy, on 06/10/2008, -4/+7Just use k-lite, quicktime alternative, and real-alternative, and then you can open anything you want in Media Player Classic or even WMP 11.
- unluckier, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1Quicktime alternative just repackages the real QuickTime codecs. So you're still just at much risk. In fact, even more risk because of the time it takes to repackage the components.
- dtfinch, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4Have they gotten around to addressing its Vista problems yet, rather than falling back to GDI for everything and crashing if ReadyBoost is enabled? VeohTV uses it too much, and while I don't use VeohTV that much, I enjoy pestering the developers regarding their QuickTime dependency and all its other problems.
- pyrates, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Do you need to turn off aero glass too in order for the edges with the buttons and border to show up in the quicktime player when it is embedded in a browser? I've filed this as a bug for the bug reporter that apple uses and it's still considered to be open for me. I'll try 7.5 tonight though to see if they fixed it. I hope they have.
- zermato, on 06/10/2008, -4/+2yaaawnnn... 2nd street gains repaved sidewalks and encourages walking.
- ocellnuri, on 06/10/2008, -6/+7Wait, front page why?
- jerrycurley, on 06/10/2008, -3/+5Oh boy! (I am pretty sure even Steve Jobs hates Qucktime.)
- fuckingusername, on 06/10/2008, -4/+8 Next I'm gonna update my real player then install Aol browser
- zdiggler, on 06/10/2008, -8/+4WOULD YOU LIKE TO UPGRADE TO QUICKPRO?
\YES\ ///REMIND ME LATER\\ - WomensUnderwear, on 06/11/2008, -15/+9***** QUICKTIME
- mightycbu, on 06/11/2008, -5/+1can i now flip the albums in coverflow like on the iPhone and iPod touch?
that's the only thing i'm missing - HanSolo69, on 06/11/2008, -6/+12Quicktime? Really? People care about this?
- charlietuna, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3Well you never know what the other guy is up to. Once you make assumptions based on experience you are starting down the path to a closed mind. At that point some clever Jane can come up and surprise you. But yeah, QT is more drag than benefit. Trick is that Mac supports it natively. Why fight it?
- veeshy, on 06/11/2008, -5/+5Can I watch stuff in full screen yet?
- koick, on 06/11/2008, -0/+7Apple-F
- trongod05, on 06/11/2008, -4/+2Seriously! Why can't this thing do full screen? Isn't this a feature that Windows Media Player was doing in Windows 95 that allowed me to watch the Buddy Holly video by Weezer that was on the Windows 95 disc?
- PoopOnPaul, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3Dude at least get your complaints right. You've been able to do full-screen for awhile now.
- Reno582, on 06/11/2008, -3/+5Quicktime, the only piece of software known to actually create a industry standard, and then slowly kill it.
- swordphish, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2In my experience, Quicktime updates usually cause mild to severe problems. It fixes one issue and then causes an even bigger one. It's one of the few beefs I've had with Apple and OSX. I won't be installing this anytime soon.
- buka039, on 06/11/2008, -5/+1Buried. Who ***** cares for this ***** piece of software anyway ?
