- CountRyan, on 09/15/2008, -7/+38I've had this installed for a couple of hours. No complaints from me. This is the first Leopard update that I haven't actually noticed anything different or any visual/obvious changes. A pretty good sign that Leopard has matured. Good work Apple!
- damndj, on 09/16/2008, -2/+23It's Snappier.
- cave, on 09/16/2008, -1/+22" Includes extensive graphics enhancements."
Can anyone elaborate on that please?? - ssavoy, on 09/16/2008, -1/+19At least they care.
- Samsauce, on 09/16/2008, -16/+31**borat voice** Have many enhance include for clock radio. Niaace.
- jawbreaker4fs, on 09/16/2008, -4/+17The reality is that all software has bugs. For an operating system, 100 bugs is really not that many. For comparison, the LaunchPad site for Ubuntu lists 122 open bugs at the time of this writing: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu
- juliandunbar11, on 09/16/2008, -1/+11Your girlfriend sounds like a bitch.
- thx607, on 09/16/2008, -2/+11I had the same problem, so I took to the Apple store and they replaced the bottom case. It was actually sent out to their repair depot in Texas. Took about a week to repair. One funny thing that happened, was that because I had replaced the hard drive with a non standard HD they had to remove it and put a new stock 80gig in. They then sent my replacement HD back in a separate box. Apparently, the computer could not pass their inspection with my replacement hard drive. So now I have a free 80gig for an external case
- jernomer, on 09/16/2008, -0/+8Don't worry. [pats on the back] There, their. They're, there.
- 9enisP, on 09/16/2008, -0/+8How is Adium's non-existent video chat better in your opinion?
- jesstech, on 09/16/2008, -1/+8It seems to have fixed the longstanding issue with graphics lag on mid-2007 (and after) MacBook Pros.
Everything is smoother now, the dock isn't as choppy as before, and expose within spaces is actually *usable.*
Wait, I take that back -- now it takes 1 and a half seconds longer to invoke expose within spaces. But everything else seems improved. - DeathJux, on 09/16/2008, -0/+7Just an FYI, "sweet as" is Kiwi (New Zealand) slang for "awesome."
It took me a while to get used to it, as with the accent it often sounds like "Sweet ass." - c5kirk, on 09/16/2008, -0/+7zenatek: See this post.. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID ...
It's normal for TM to spend a long time 'preparing' after an OS upgrade. Mine spent about 40 minutes preparing for the first backup after the 10.5.5 upgrade. - RemarkableRyan, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7Aww, spoiler bro!
- kajoob, on 09/16/2008, -4/+10I just installed the 10.5.5. update and it completely hosed my system.
- Dell Inspiron running XP - rdoger6424, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7I don't dignify my g4 mac mini by calling its silicon glob a "graphics card".
- dullnation, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5Actually, he called the new facebook style horrid. If he were saying what you're implying, it should have been
"sweet as.. please no horrid random crashes in Safari on the new facebook style?" - livelifenaked, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5why do people assume that IT professionals only have to worry about the "software update" feature? If something apple does creates a problem at our work, no one is going to look at apple.
Our work includes being responsible for someone else's mess and in the event that a problem occurs, finding a workaround for it. - digitalpencil, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5how on earth did you do that?
- kipmartin, on 09/16/2008, -2/+7"Your going to lose your number 2 slot there."
ive heard that every year for 10 years. its right up there with "20xx, the year of the Linux laptop". i wont hold my breath. unless you are a developer, theres no need for linux desktop--its not fun, doesnt work as specified much of the time, and requires tech support for simple things like downloads, drivers, and media.
you developer geeks have fun and tweaking your Linux boxes...were busy using our macs and PCs for work. - supermanred, on 09/16/2008, -1/+5Uh, we're using Leopard. We're fully backed up with time machine over wireless... hourly. Why do you make it sound like you have to back it up manually? Do you even own an OS X computer?
- vawksel, on 09/16/2008, -5/+9I did a tcp fingerprint on your ip address, and it looks like you are running Windows, not OS X.
- Qumahlin, on 09/16/2008, -2/+6If you ever come across software that claims to be bug free then the QA team just isn't doing a good enough job looking.
Just like its guaranteed that for some users it is guaranteed this update will cause some other issue they did not have before, while resolving other issues they were having.
Quite frankly no one should be able to comment on software bugs unless they've had any sort of experience programming in an enterprise environment with multiple teams assembling individual pieces of a much larger combined codebase.
Now matter who you are, there will be bugs, its a guarantee and no software or amount of QA can prevent it. - adc86, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4It's the intertubes, Man... How can you determine which "group of people" posted this article versus which "group of people" enjoy talking about their computers doing what they want?
- danielsamuels, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4Skype?
- rumblestrut, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4I'm writing the post from my Linux box with my MacBook updating next to me.
- supermanred, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3It does... because Apple updates it frequently, unlike Microsoft's OS whose updates are a pain to install (can you say Windows validation crap)...
Plus, my security is updated by Apple for free, whereas you are on your own to fix security holes with Anti-virus software, and if you arent pirating, you're probably paying a yearly subscription rate to keep the antivirus databases updated. - ATCclears, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4I just put the 10.5.5 update on my laptop, and after the reboot I noticed the mdworker thread doing a lot of work. Not confirmed, but I wonder if Spotlight is rebuilding its search indexes as part of the upgrade.
If true, this might explain why some people are seeing a delay or slowness in Time Machine. - smrekar, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3because they aren't IT pros.
Why does 90% of our job entail asking people to restart and call me back if the problem persists. - burrgrinder, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4WTF are you talking about? I've been running OSX since 10.3 and the only update that ***** me was when I forgot to plug it in to the wall and the battery ran out half way through an update (which was still easily fixed via an "archive and reinstall", without losing anything). I've updated without fear every time and have never had a single issue.
- robncollegepark, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4If you use ichat video, do NOT install 10.5.5. I rely on ichat video to talk to my girlfriend who is attending graduate school in another state. I have a new macbook pro. I installed 10.5.5 this evening, and ever since then, ichat video conversations will freeze after a few minutes. I have confirmed this from two unique locations.
read my lips, if you rely on ichat video, do NOT install 10.5.5.
perhaps even worse, my girlfriend doesn't believe that it's the software update, and now she's pissed! Thanks, Steve. - supermanred, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3Speeds up all your apps, too. Even some of the stock apple ones. My macbook is much more zippier now that I slimmed all my apps.
*****, even on a reboot (which I do every 6 months wether I need it or not) the apps start up a lot faster. - mrBitch, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3You know, you're absolutely right, but those of us who are relatively "recent" switchers are STILL used to the Windows way of doing backups, and find it difficult to break old habits.
I still do weekly drive image snapshots (just in case) on a separate external backup drive. - ScottishMcDuff, on 09/16/2008, -3/+6The best thing about Leopard is that if something stops working (usually from human error), full system restore is a valid and easy option because of Time Machine.
To all of those out there that claim their Time Machine is stuck on preparing, I had the same problem back when I first bought Leopard. Over time, it just fixed itself. It did drive me absolutely crazy, though. I'd spend hours looking online hoping that someone had figured out the problem. - robncollegepark, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3What I don't like about Time Machine is that you cannot use another partition on the internal hard drive to serve as the backup repository. There is no technical reason why you cannot do this, and concern for hard drive speed is not a valid argument.
So, you are forced to plug in an external hard drive to use Time Machine. How 1999 is that? - rumblestrut, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4Hmm ... not sure why I was buried. I was just letting people know of what happened to me in case they're having the same issues.
- inmylife, on 09/16/2008, -1/+3Apple is watching you....
- craterburnsu, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2I don't have Parallels, but the latest VMWare Fusion beta is still working fine with my bootcamp partition.
- alexpnx, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2More like:
Address Book
* Introduces a bug that makes Address Book, Mail, iTunes sync unable to start if you have a smart group with a 'negating' condition (ie NOT) - BrendanSheehan, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Stay classy digg.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -4/+6atleast you can jerk off on it and camouflage the mess
- asskey, on 09/16/2008, -4/+6Does it fix Starcraft?
- chkdg8, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Make sure you run Xslimmer. It trimmed off quite a bit of size and unnecessary languages on all of the updated apps. Sweet.
- supermanred, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2No ***** they wouldn't. As a Windows user of over 20 years (yes, I have Xp on the macbook still for nostalgia) ... They really can NEVER have claimed that windows just worked.
- Niightwitch, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2I have not found this to be true in the 20 years I've been using Apple computers. They're generally very reliable, good computers... I wouldn't use any other kind than a mac.
- decker12, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2* Fixes Kerberos authentication issues for Mac OS X 10.5 clients that connect to certain Samba servers, such as Mac OS X Server version 10.4.
About damn time. This should have been fixed for 10.5.0. Basically, if you had a 10.4 Xserve, you couldn't connect via SMB to it's shares when you were using a 10.5. client. Since Apple stopped selling 10.4 machines in November of 07, you were pretty much FORCED to upgrade your XServe. Upgrading to 10.5 Server was no walk in the park (and it still doesn't run very well - very buggy). Apple lost my enterprise business because of this. - benbondu, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2looks as though it still doesn't include a fix for bluetooth headsets causing kernel panics
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID= ... - Verdanic, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2The inline editing in general is absolutely terrible. I'm sure they've realized this, but it's another case of looks over function. What other explanation is there? The goddamn thing does't work.
