- timusca, on 02/12/2008, -6/+33About freaking time! Excuse me while I go update...
Update: Yes, it is, indeed, available on my Apple TV :-) - naonao, on 02/12/2008, -5/+30So this update's free? At least Apple TV buyers get treated well, unlike the touch owners.
- kcdstudios, on 02/12/2008, -8/+29It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
- timusca, on 02/12/2008, -1/+22I would like to add that Apple TV now acts as an AirTunes device, so Internet Radio is now available on your Apple TV... it even displays the artist and song if the channel broadcasts it!
- thebrokenlight, on 02/12/2008, -2/+17We did this already.
- petervenkman, on 02/12/2008, -2/+13CAN YOU SHUFFLE MUSIC VIDEO PLAYLISTS FOR STEVE'S SAKE?????????
- Unclekoolaid, on 02/12/2008, -2/+12You have safari on your apple tv?
- simplenation, on 02/12/2008, -1/+11i really hope they decide to release a version similar to this on Leopard's Front Row. Only because I want to rent HD movies but don't want to buy an Apple TV.
- timusca, on 02/12/2008, -1/+9Wrong topic, much?
- laserob, on 02/12/2008, -1/+9use visual hub, works 100% of the time.
- colincornaby, on 02/12/2008, -0/+8Sure, if you get them into H.264 format. You can even stream them right from your computer.
- MonkeyBoy87, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7still no love for canada....
- lnfiniteLoop, on 02/12/2008, -5/+10It takes a heck of a long time to update. It updates the box three times, it seems.
- timusca, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5Update it if you want rentals... simple as that. If you've hacked it to make more storage and whatnot, don't update, because I can assure you it will not work anymore.
Shouldn't take long for people to hack Take 2, so don't worry about it... - BlueStarr, on 02/12/2008, -1/+5There are alot more Mac users than Apple TV users so it should come in a couple of months. But I'm going to buy one because it comes with the easiest UI and media streaming capabilities I've seen.
- inactive, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Even after the subtlety, your post still must contain humor.
- Professr, on 02/12/2008, -2/+5Sexy :D They need a way to do real-time H.264 conversion, though...
- yabos, on 02/12/2008, -1/+4Everything works fine except movie rentals
- Chakat, on 02/12/2008, -1/+4It did on release. You just need composite inputs.
- Refrag, on 02/12/2008, -4/+7Blame the accountants, not Apple.
- logandurand, on 02/12/2008, -1/+4I blame Apple's accountants.
- timusca, on 02/12/2008, -2/+5Actually, the scrolling acceleration was one of the more pleasing things about the update... before it acted WAY too slow and took forever to get to the bottom of a list. Now, it moves much faster and is much more predictable as to where it is going to stop.
Remember, just because something changed or is different than what you're used to, doesn't mean it's weird or bad. - Blizaine, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3The HD trailers start immediately. Haven't tried a movie yet.
- 955701, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3Actually, Apple TV is pretty good about figuring out when to start the movie so streaming won't leave you buffering in the middle of the show. I've only had an issue a few times, but it occurred to me to stop using the internet connection and pay attention to the show.
- removesstains, on 02/12/2008, -3/+6and when it doesn't don't expect it to be covered under apple care.
- yikiad, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3it's like that one girl on american ido......er...i mean....who watches that crap?
- Professr, on 02/13/2008, -0/+3The movie quality is much higher than the preview quality.
- Refrag, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2Can you shuffle by album?!
Are music videos included when you shuffle your songs?! - DelMonte, on 02/13/2008, -0/+2I would wait a few days before passing a judgment on the speed of the servers. The update was released today, and obviously the servers are overloaded because everyone (owning an Apple TV) is trying the new HD renting service at the same time.
- dalesmatrix, on 02/13/2008, -2/+4Oh nobody seems to have mentioned that there's now a 1080P resolution option :) Looking forward to photo slideshows at 1080P, should be cool. (not that 1080i was exactly shabby)
- ExSlashdotter, on 02/13/2008, -1/+3Yeah, movies and tv shows from TPB are like half the whole point. If you're a mac user, try out VisualHub. Just drag .avi files in, it converts them to h.264 automatically, and will even auto-import to iTunes.
- iEvan, on 02/12/2008, -1/+3Picture slideshows now have the option to loop which allows an Apple TV to be used as a stand-alone presentation box. I know of a few schools that were waiting for this feature to show off their student's handiwork.
- mdavis, on 02/12/2008, -2/+4anyone have a list of which movies are available in HD?
- slvrbullet87, on 02/13/2008, -1/+3Get a job and buy the stuff you want
- MonkeyBoy87, on 02/12/2008, -1/+3as long as you have a tv capable of accepting component video (red/green/blue) it will work
- samus007, on 02/13/2008, -0/+2Woot! Transformers in HD. I don't have an HD DVD player so i am happy to be able to at least rent it in some form of HD!
- inactive, on 02/12/2008, -2/+4I just unboxed my new 160Gb ATV about an hour ago, wondering if I should wait for the new update, install it, and then wait for a hack for the new update, or hack the atv right now. I have to many divx movies to convert them for the atv.
- herbstblatt, on 02/13/2008, -1/+3Really love that they added AirTunes as a new feature but - the new interface is just ugly and more complicated than before :-( !
- nfxmedia, on 02/13/2008, -0/+1I'm just glad 1080p video playback was added. The Apple TV finally grew a pair.
- logandurand, on 02/12/2008, -2/+3We'll just keep on trying 'till we run out of cake.
- jw1223, on 02/13/2008, -0/+1I normally just use QTpro to convert divx to ATV format. A 1:30 movie normally takes about 45min on my MBP
- dalesmatrix, on 02/13/2008, -1/+2Being in Australia, I was hoping that I would be able to use my US store credit, purchased over ebay using US prepaid itunes cards. Alas, although I can buy songs via the store using this credit, it looks like the apple TV rentals require an actual credit card with a US address rather than just a US address entered into your account settings page. Damn. I can still browse the movie rentals etc (by setting the store to US and using my US login), but it fails at the actual rental stage, saying I need a valid address.
- courtlandr, on 02/13/2008, -2/+3kind of a distraction from what is really going on in the world today. however, i am pleased that they finally released the update!
- knelto, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Either not many people here peruse the MacRumors forums or people got it and just thought it was lame...
- FDL1, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1When the first AppleTV disk image was dumped, it could be run in OS X with very few tweaks (setting the media disk, window/fullscreen mode, etc.). It should be interesting how much hacking this update needs, since it's the only way to get HD rentals.
- deadbaby, on 02/12/2008, -1/+2According to Awkward TV you can now use the AppleTV as remote speakers in iTunes which is about the best news I've ever heard.
- MonkeyBoy87, on 02/12/2008, -1/+2if apple tv had codecs to play .mkv we would be set. alas, I have to do some whacked out transcoding that works only about 50% of time. if they offered the content in canada I wouldnt have to perform such drastic measures.
- Professr, on 02/12/2008, -1/+2Does anyone know if there's something that will act as a remotely-controlled appletv-compatible streaming video server? Since it can play networked video streams now, I'd love to set up a server on my main storage box so that I can use the appletv more.
- PathDaemon, on 02/12/2008, -1/+2The issue (and I'm NOT sure if it has been resolved) was that Apple TV assumes a 16x9 screen. So if you used it with a 4:3 TV the aspect ratio is all screwed up.
