- lilzaphod, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Clearly, Apple is feeling the heat from Adobe Lightroom. Apple never drops prices unless they have to.
- navvvv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11you must be a riot at dinner parties
- emblym, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12You obviously haven't used both. Its like comparing Photoshop to Gimp
- emblym, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"plus, what's wrong with gimp? ;-)"
Ha ha. Your right. As soon as I sent Submit, I knew that would get me in trouble. - knowall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Looks like Apple jumped the gun and posted this to this description to their RSS feed prematurely:
http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/04/20060412233425.shtml - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16WOW!!! That's 40% off, for a better faster version of the same app. Very impressed!! Now I can take my photography to another level at an affordable price, great.
- sud0n1m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nobody drops prices unless they have to.
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Aperture on an intel mac absolutely ***** flies... I'm using it on a macbook pro now. I cannot believe the speed. It is CRAZY fast.
I've always preferred aperture over adobe lightroom, it just doesn't have enough features, and feels like a clunky version of iphoto. - JefPober, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3they also offer existing users a $200 e-coupon: http://www.apple.com/promo/aperture/
- beardly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It looks like they updated the price on the site. It shows $299 for me right now.
- TWiTarmy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i have actually, i have lightroom sitting in my dock and have played with aperture on our G5 at school.
plus, what's wrong with gimp? ;-) - jdbyrnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Too bad I can't mark your comment as inaccurate.
- extraspecial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's great, except you're wrong :) It doesn't store them in a "single file." It stores them within a bundle, which appears in the Finder as a single file, but is really a hierarchy of folders. If you "show contents" on that bundle, you'll see it's actually containing all of the original raw files, metadata, etc. All of the images are indexed in a relational database.
Again, it does not store everything in "one file" as people are often too quick to assume. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Gimp doesn't have many tools that a photographer needs. Web developers seem to like it though.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with you. But what I find kind of funny is that what is in Adobe Lightroom is already in Photoshop (ACR + Bridge). Lightroom just makes it prettier. I actually found lightroom harder to use. I found that the adjustment sliders did not feel as fine grained as they are with ACR.
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No only that, but Apple is giving $200 coupons to users who already purchased Aperture at the previous price. Nice to see a company rewarding early adopters!
- dougallj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Apple's site doesn't reflect price change yet..."
Where did you get your info? - mvexel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm not sure about Aperture yet. Lightroom beta is promising and fast, and it doesn't crash - Aperture does. Still I like the efficiency of screen real estate usage of Aperture, with the HUDs and the smaller interface elements. It's more usable on a 20" iMac (which I own) than Lightroom. I really don't care for the way Aperture stores all your images in one single file and suspect that's one of the reasons it crashes on me quite often. Let's see if 1.1 solves this.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now I just need to buy a new camera...
- JefPober, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's here: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=FF6226E3&nplm=MA438Z%2FA
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I only hope this version is better than 1.0, which was hobbled by sub average raw conversion, memory and resource hogs, high CPU usage and slow speed. I pity the guys who paid full price for version 1.0.
http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/23756.html - JBracy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.apple.com/uk/promo/aperture/
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple store "Price: $299.00"
Far more reasonable price for it.. When I get around to getting 1GB RAM in my imac, I may well get it.. Hmm
- Ben - tzon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Claiim a $200 dollar coupon
http://www.apple.com/promo/aperture/ - kagayaki1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree about Lightroom; I use Aperture on a day to day basis, and if it weren't it beta, I'd probably switch to Lightroom. I personally prefer it in my Adobe workflow (not just Photoshop, which Aperture plays nice with, but Illustrator and InDesign too) on the main stuff. But, I DO like using Aperture for the web galleries and books. Just can't be beat.
- citizenpain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, right after I posted the story I did some snooping around and discovered that it was in the feed but nowhere in the site. I'm quite happy about the price, this is much more of a "sweetspot" price. With the RAW problems fixed and Universal binaries, they should sell a ton more.
- calabria, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'll buy this as soon as I get my new mac, 300 bucks is awesome!
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That depends on the reason it wouldn't run.
If you don't have enough RAM then that's not terribly likely to ever change, is it? - AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if u have 1.0 will ssoftware update update it, or do you have to buy it again even though its a point release
- fraserspeirs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And it's on Hot News ...and in my Software Update. Installing now.....
http://www.apple.com/hotnews/ - captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I wonder how they are going to do universal installs"
There's no difference between installing a Universal Binary and a single-architecture app. - modian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It will run fine if you hack the compatibility check.
- trekkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RTFA ;)
It's available in Software Update, only those of us holding out for buying it will have to buy it. - nork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are right. $300 IS awesome.
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wondering if Aperture's update allows the other iApps to see the photos now?
- dilg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So I thought I'd be smart and post the Apple UK link for the $200 credit offered on the US site, but there doesn't appear to be one. Hopefully Europe get's the same price drop but the international stores do not reflect it yet.
- zelig2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It probably got rated down because you're just making comments based off of what you read about Aperture v1.0 and not v1.1. If you actually used 1.1 you'd notice an improvement in RAW processing, included allowing you to tweek the RAW image parameters.
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now I just need to buy an intel Mac...
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3why is Ireland being buried? it's possible that posting the announcement early was an accident, but it's just as likely that it was intentional. in fact, i'm morel ikely to think they did it on purpose to drum up interest, get attention, etc. smart move.
- kabz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting review link. The verdict looks similar to my experience using the Lightroom Beta, which is usable/useful but not a whole bunch of fun performance-wise.
Check out my Paris pictures which were all processed from Nikon D70 RAW files using Lightroom Beta 2.
http://jonathanwatmough.com/parisvacation.html - vandy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2not until i can click that "buy now" button has it actually been released...
- MadMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Apple store is down and "will be back soon". Maybe this is for the Universal Aperture and the price drop.
- metfoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The original CD will not let you install the app. Usually you need the app installed before SU lets you upgrade it. Apple would have to release a download with the entire app or an installer that patches the original media to make it installable on an intel system
- ruuud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I mean will it run out of the box on a 20" 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 1GB RAM and GeForce FX 5200 video.
I'm sure that wasn't possible with version 1.0 since I tried it. - paulchu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1not even TWO minutes after posting my comment about how APERTURE STINKS AT HANDLING RAW FILES, do I get rated down on my previous comment. It wasn't even biased!
- smilespray, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Now why would people go thumbs-down on the parent post? I'm a self-proclaimed Apple fanboy, but he's just stating a fairly well-known fact.
- extraspecial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will let you install if you meet the compatibility requirements. It installed fine on my MacBook Pro before the Universal update was released.
- metfoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have a mini core duo. You can copy thge app over to the sytsem and it runs in rosetta. Its not blazingly fast, but it runs. I wonder how they are going to do universal installs
- Crustibooga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well I for one am a little bit peeved, I just paid £350 for it... Having said that, it's a damn nice program that's sorted all my work-flow probs. I too have been using Lightroom, I keep an open mind with it, I prefer it's raw controls, but just don't feel as comfortable with it. I just hope I get some sort of rebate!
- paulchu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1too bad aperture stinks at handling RAW files properly... doesn't anyone care about THAT? crazy apple fanatics...
