- GutterMoo, on 03/03/2009, -44/+466Pricing fail. $600 for a computer with 1 GB of ram? Seriously?
- Dalhectar, on 03/03/2009, -15/+200Welcome to 2004.
- Thud, on 03/03/2009, -40/+202Actually, that sounds about right, if you configure the Dell Studio Hybrid (closest thing Dell has to the Mini) to the same specs (2GB memory, 2.0GHz proc, 250GB drive) it comes to $749. Also remember that you have to configure it with Vista Ultimate to have comparable feature set to OS X 10.5.
Mac Mini setup with 2GB, 2.0GHz proc, and 250GB drive is.... $749.
Some tradeoffs though, the Dell comes with a mouse/keyboard, but the Apple has a better built-in video card.
The Dell has blu-ray optional, not yet even available on the Mac. But the Dell but also does NOT come with wireless, that's additional cost to the $749, and Bluetooth is not an option.
Bluetooth and wireless are both standard on the Mac Mini. - carlj133, on 03/03/2009, -36/+156$800 for that is daylight robbery. It don't even come with a monitor!
- markbrown, on 03/03/2009, -47/+163If you think Macs are overpriced, shut up and don't buy one. That's about all there is to it.
- hjoshua81, on 03/03/2009, -17/+117Wow, I am a Mac Fanboy and that's a pathetic upgrade. Lord knows I wouldn't pay $800 for that thing.
- JargonScott, on 03/03/2009, -26/+116The only thing I like about the Mini we bought 2 years ago is that I haven't had to do a thing to it. No updating drivers, maintaining AV licenses, or figuring out crashes. I do PC based IT for a living, and it's nice to not have to come home to the same problems, so paying that premium was worth it for me.
Hell, the thing has only been turned off like 3 times, and 1 of those was when we moved to a new house. - doctorcaligari, on 03/03/2009, -8/+90WOW! What an underwhelming release.
20-inch iMac: Loses discrete graphics, slight speed bump, same amount of RAM, same price
24" Low-End: Can't complain about this one, except for the integrated graphics. Cheaper price.
24" Mid-range: Discrete graphics is a rebranded GeForce 9500 (slightly better than old mid-range)
24" High-End: Discrete graphics is a rebranded Geforce 9600 (worse than old high end)
Mac Mini Low-End: No complaints except RAM (1GB is not enough, should have been 2GB). Finally got rid of "Combo Drive"
Mac Mini High End: No complaints except RAM. For the money, should have 4GB.
Mac Pro: $2500 for a quad-core? And I only get a rebranded Geforce 9500? Same functionality could be mostly duplicated for around half of the price with EFI-X and a Corei7, and you can get a MUCH better graphics card to boot.
I have been buying Apple for years, but with each passing release, the specs get worse and the prices stay the same. Sure, the processors get faster and they moved to DDR3, but there is little reason to upgrade. - inactive, on 03/03/2009, -53/+123I can't wait for the Apple fanboys that claim Macs aren't overpriced. I always used to point to Mac mini when they said Macs were overpriced, but their usual excuse was that "it isn't updated yet". Now that is has been updated, it's still overpriced.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -7/+69$200 for an extra 1 GB of ram and 200GB of hard drive space. Fail.
1GB ddr3 1066: $29.49
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
320gb 7200rpm hard drive: $54.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
Total: $83.88 (shipping free from newegg)
Hell, after the upgrade, you also have a spare 120gb hard drive that you can either sell or use as a backup drive.
All for less than half the price difference for the upgraded version. - xelloss, on 03/03/2009, -26/+75Meh, I just built a Dell Studio Hybrid, for $499 you get 2.0GB, 2.0 Proc, and 250GB HDD.
- kelly, on 03/03/2009, -16/+65@TheUngod
"I call BS on having to get Vista Ultimate to compare to OS X"
I call BS on you thinking that Vista Home Basic is comparable to OS X. - brstilson, on 03/03/2009, -9/+53But it's so small!
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -8/+52It's a feature.
- fuelvolts, on 03/03/2009, -1/+43$800
- digitalpencil, on 03/03/2009, -4/+44^ Yeah, except that case costs $210 and only supports GMA950 and an Atom 330. It's not exactly comparable to a prebuilt C2D/9400M.
I know people love to shout about how Apple's machines are overpriced, but the mini is one of the cheapest PCs at this footprint available and although Apple rip you off for RAM, everyone knows you just buy another dimm and install it yourself..
To be completely honest though, all of this is neither here nor there. Buying a pre-packaged machine, running OS X, setup to work ootb is not the same thing as buying a bunch of separate components off of newegg, all with separate warranties, and then assembling it yourself.. Newsflash: the mainstream market doesn't want a kit-computer!
I'll probably end up getting buried into oblivion here for even hazarding to support anything made by Apple so perhaps i should just go with the witchhunt and close with "BOO! HISS!! Crapple are expensive and all their userbase are starbucks drinking gays!" - Thud, on 03/03/2009, -15/+50"Meh, I just built a Dell Studio Hybrid, for $499 you get 2.0GB, 2.0 Proc, and 250GB HDD."
I'm sure that's a fine setup as long as you can live with the older Pentium dual-core proc, although it is indeed 2.0GHz, instead of Core 2 Duo. And a crippled version of the OS (Vista Home Basic). - Thud, on 03/03/2009, -2/+37"so if dell does it too - that makes okay? "
It shows that it's not out of line with the market for ultra-small desktops. Whether it's "okay" is determined by your need for such a system, and your willingness to buy one at that price. - raydeen, on 03/03/2009, -3/+38I had the same machine. Just shy of $600 in '01.
- anexanhume, on 03/03/2009, -4/+39How is that fitting in a mac mini size case? Oh wait...
- MtheoryX, on 03/03/2009, -3/+33@sodoh:
I'm a Mac user, but even I had to digg you down for that asinine comment. - zydeco, on 03/03/2009, -9/+37Check out the price when you want to take the 24" iMac from 4GB to 8GB. A cool $1,000.
- mohrt, on 03/03/2009, -13/+39Mac hardware always comes with a premium price, but can you see the forest beyond the trees? There is so much more to it than just hardware. For instance, I had a friend (not so computer literate) switch from PC to Mac, and she no longer calls me twice a week for tech support and FAQ's. That alone is worth the few extra bones you pay for a Mac.
And yes if you can swap out RAM and hard drives yourself, you can save some money. I always do that with a Mac anyways. - dhmlco, on 03/03/2009, -3/+28Thud, those aren't the same specs. The Dell is running up to 4GB3 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM, while the "mini" is using DDR3 Triple Channel SDRAM on a 1066MHz frontside bus.
FW400 instead of FW800. No Bluetooth. No WiFi standard. Integrated Intel video (ugh).
Cheaper, slower components. Cheaper system. Next time compare apples to Apples. - Urkel, on 03/03/2009, -3/+28You guys are all haters. Find me a computer that shoots out rainbows and gives birth to Unicorns at this price. Yeah, I thought so. Only the Mac Mini can do that. $600 is a bargain!
- Wilddigi, on 03/03/2009, -3/+27Stupid lame comments
- digitalpencil, on 03/03/2009, -5/+29the mac mini is one of the cheapest pcs at this footprint available.
- daschupa, on 03/03/2009, -8/+29It's the whole Lexus/Honda, Diamond/diamonique, wife/prostitute thing; you are paying more for the better status and better longterm purchase, not price/performance ratio.
And most people don't even use their computers to even their minimum level, the most taxing thing they load is weatherbug. - klowngoblin, on 03/03/2009, -5/+26yeah these are so "small" too
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... - Thud, on 03/03/2009, -2/+22While Apple's system prices are competitive in their base configurations (despite what some people think), they really do overcharge on upgrades.
Never, ever order a memory upgrade from Apple. You're better off getting your base notebook or desktop and then purchasing the additional memory or bigger hard drive from newegg.
Contrary to popular belief, upgrading your memory or hard drive will NOT affect the warranty. In the case of the mini, some people cringe at having to use the putty knife to crack it open, and maybe they're clumsy with jeweler's screwdrivers, so it *might* be worth it to pay a few extra bucks for that upgrade. - brstilson, on 03/03/2009, -7/+27You bought a low-end Mac and you think you can upgrade?
BWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! - UKsHaDoW, on 03/03/2009, -5/+23Whats the link the unsubscribe from the 20 years of apple bashing?
- klowngoblin, on 03/03/2009, -11/+28updating drivers? do you know WTF your talkig about? you stil have to update drivers for mac too, it just comes down with apple updates the same way vista does updates.
instead of clicking on an apple icon and clicking update software
you click on controlpanel and click on update.
you shouldnt be doing IT for a living if you think macs dont crash, try figuring out why a 1st gen intel based imac keeps freezing or having kernel panics. (its not ram or cpu, its the mobo, almost 50% of them failed after 2 years becuase of heat issues)
also remember how the 9400s cause display problems in macbooks, apple had to release a driver update to fix it (or fix most of the issues) - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -32/+49I'll buy anything that's shiny and made by Apple
- hawksfan03, on 03/03/2009, -10/+27i just built an htpc that has the geforce 9400 graphics chipset integrated on the motherboard and the quality is great. but my htpc only cost me $800 and it has: 1.5 TB hd, blu-ray/hd-dvd player, antec case, 4gb ram, e7400 C2D.
What an absolute joke of a price - danielwsmithee, on 03/03/2009, -0/+17@klown newegg doesn't even offer the ram to get the iMac to 8 GB yet. You can however order it direct from crucial for a cool $780.
http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODUL ... - mohrt, on 03/03/2009, -1/+17Sure you can hack it, but do you think your average consumer is going to figure that out, or even want to?
- combatchuck, on 03/03/2009, -3/+19Meh. Expected better. But what can you expect in such a small computer? Perhaps they should release a reasonably priced computer that has some sort of upgrade path.
- ironhide, on 03/03/2009, -9/+25I've got a 1.66 GHz Mini, I saw this and thought for a second about upgrading. Then I looked at my nice Hackintosh that I just built and the urge passed.
- klowngoblin, on 03/03/2009, -0/+16 macbookwheel will rule us all, only 45 minutes to type an email
- bigsteve, on 03/03/2009, -2/+17I wish I could digg you up twice, one for the good point, and the other for the wife/prostitute thing.
- digitalpencil, on 03/03/2009, -0/+15Mac Mini: (6.5"x6.5"x2") 2.0GHZ C2D, 9400M, 1GB, 120GB: $599
Asus eeebox: (8.5"x7"x1") 1.6GHZ Atom, 945GSE, 1GB, 160GB: $319
Studio Hybrid: (8.8"x8.8"x3") 2.0GHZ Dual Core, X3100, 2GB, 160GB: $449 (without monitor)
In all cases you're comparing physically larger machines with slower processors/intel graphics. I'm not saying that they're necessarily bad machines, they're not.. (the eeebox looks ***** awesome in fact) but they are still not as small as the mini, or as powerful.
I'm not sure what i'd buy if i was in the market for a new mini pc and i'm very underwhelmed by this update, but in comparison to the various mini PCs on the market ( http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/168/mini-pcs/products. ... ) the mini is quite competitively priced.
As I said, i don't know what i'd go for personally, the eeebox looks sweet as ***** and it's SO cheap i'd probably lean towards that but if you're looking for a mediacenter than a 1.6GHZ atom is gonna chug like a bitch when it comes to 1080p streams.. in that case the only options are the mini and the hybrid and the hybrid looks like a doorstop... it's a toss-up but it's irrelevant, my only point was that the mini is not as expensive as people make it out to be when you compare it to machines of the same class/footprint.
not that any of this will slow the ensuing flamewar ;) - TheUngod, on 03/03/2009, -10/+24Of course Vista Home Basic is not comparable to OS X. You can run games on Home Basic. Seriously though, It would compare more to Vista Media Center, or whatever it's called. Ultimate has loads of business tools that are not necessary on a Mac.
- indisguise, on 03/03/2009, -0/+14 1GB of DDR3!!!!!!!!!!!
- rlinhares, on 03/03/2009, -6/+20Out of touch with reallity.
- codyman, on 03/03/2009, -9/+23Apple is kind of like the cell phone companies... they show you all this shiny stuff but in the end rape you for more than its worth
and I am a Mac user! (bought a used G5 Dual 2.0ghz for $250 bucks... <-- pricing that makes it worth while... - brstilson, on 03/03/2009, -10/+24Apple is only really competitive on the high end. My home-built PC whips the stuffing out of the $800 Mac Mini, and I built it for the same price. 2 GB of RAM? Try 4. 2 GHz Core 2 Duo? Try 3 GHz. 320GB Hard Drive? I have a 640 GB. GeForce 9400M? I have an 8800 GT with 512 MB of Video Ram.
For the same price, you can build something with twice the power as a Mac Mini. - dhmlco, on 03/03/2009, -3/+17Not the same specs. The Dell is running 4GB3 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM, while the "mini" is using DDR3 Triple Channel SDRAM on a 1066MHz frontside bus.
Cheaper components. Cheaper system. - FredFredrickson, on 03/03/2009, -3/+16"Does it run legit copies of OS X?"
-At that price, who cares?
"You can keep that extra money you're saving but then give it to the IT support guy later to help you trouble shoot that cheap computer."
-People who build their own computers don't need IT support, dude. - zydeco, on 03/03/2009, -1/+14Hey, I'm not saying this is good or bad, I'm just pointing out the fact. But thanks for digging me down anyway.
