- sl4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the sleek look and solid feel to my VAIO S360 (more so than the current Powerbook G4 even)

I'll bet the price range for the Intel based Macs (including the laptops) will be roughly the same as we see for the current G4 and G5 based Macs. If you (or anyone) thinks Apple is going to price them like commodity PCs, they are going to be sorely disappointed. - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is in a Vaio that makes it so special? It's just a regular on the shelf pc.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple better keep the price down.
- crankx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are hiring engineers not farming it out to them they will still have to use the apple guidelines for production.
- reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember hearing before about some conference or something that Steve Jobs was speaking at and one of the big wigs from Sony was there as well. Steve made a joke about doing a computer with Sony. Perhaps it wasn't really a joke. I wish I could remember the details.
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple makes the best hardware - best laptops period. Teaming up with Sony's Vaio team would only make them better ...
- usmarinesjz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I personally don't like VAIO's and if Apple uses them then I will definitely NOT be switching to apple anytime soon.

Apple Enthusiast but VAIO detester - crankx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah we wouldn't want to put the word cheap with Apple that honor goes to PC's. They have always been nice and CHEAP.
- Loie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony laptops are crap. I repair laptops and system boards for a living and believe me, Sony Vaios are the most overengineered, overpriced pieces of junk out there. They may look pretty, but inside they're a disaster. Cables and wires run all over the place, connectors are everywhere, that battery cover door is retarded, and they love to use a dozen different size screws. (A good design uses 3 or 4.) All that crap breaks. Often. And before anybody tries to herald their LCDs, which are very nice, note that some of those aren't made by Sony, but by QDI.
The current Powerbooks aren't exactly brilliant either, but nowhere near as bad as the Sonys.
This news doesn't thrill me. :( - hypeiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea vaios were usually overpriced and underpowered, but they sure looked slick... no wonder apple teamed up with them
- garbanzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IMHO Sony makes the best pc laptops available, so it's no big surprise that Apple would look to them for some help. Good luck keeping them from putting a MemoryStick slot on it though :P
- calroot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to work at Sony and all the engineers I worked with didn't even use VAIOs provided to them by the company cause they sucked. But admittedly, we all loved the sleek designs.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will not be the first time Apple has went to Sony for a laptop design. I say this is probably true and it's not a shock. Steve Jobs even hinted at this way back at MacWorld.
- ickyelf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This makes sense. Apple and Sony know how to market cool.
- macbayboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah right. I doubt this very seriously. Sony's laptops are not sleek, or clean. They are rough around the edges and feel very cheap. This is not what Apple has been about or be about. I want to work in Apple's "Spread False Rumors" department and watch the Net Rumor Monkeys feast on these ridiculous stories.
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow cant see any problems arising here here.... stay tuned for an uber stylish yet utterly useless laptop for the future... JK I can't wait to see what apple is goona unveil, i could sure use a new laptop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple would be better off recruiting the Vaio brand and marketing managers. They are, after all, the folks who have accomplished exactly what Apple will be trying to do with there Intel based laptops (namely, charging more for a manufactured "image").
I have owned three Vaio notebooks over the years and my general impression is that there is nothing particularly special about Vaio laptops. In fact, all my notebooks died "before their time" and I'm typing this on a Toshiba laptop.
Besides, the last I heard was that Apple was looking at ASUS as the supplier for their notebooks. - ccrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've heard of mountains of tech troubles with the VAIO's. Just general shoddy-ness.
- clubgus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This aint innovative for Apple, it shows Apple have run out of ideas, I think Apple might palm off their Computer and OS division to someone else could it be Sony making the next line of Macs. The Sony Powerbook, or the Sony Mac OS X think about it Apple are more worried about their iPods! and iTunes
- crankx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cheap is cheap in my opinion but any really good PC is not cheap, you can not buy a 499.00 PC and expect it to perform. If you do real cost analysis and you will see a mac and a pc are not really that different so saying that a mac costs more is wrong.
- nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not true, just rumor, the Mac comunity bring looks of page views..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VAIOs suck. i got a 1400 $ one it only lasted 4 years of non-intensive usage. (the most i ever had on the hard disk was 700 mb. of course, back then i wasnt a FLAC junkie)
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple sells hardware first and the OS second is why. If Apple was going to compete with MS they wouldn't be using custom apple branded x86 machines and not allowing the OS to run on a commodity PC. Apple is still going to be an indirect competitor and thus little threat to Microsoft.
Apple is taking a good idea and crippling them with there own stubbornness and arrogance. Apple has a real chance of destroying MS if they let the OS run on any Joes generic PC but they arn't.
I belive the new x86 Macs will be just as expensive as a PowerPC based Mac. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+016x9 "If you (or anyone) thinks Apple is going to price them like commodity PCs, they are going to be sorely disappointed."
Alright Apple expert, if they want's to jump ahead of Microsoft they won't do it by keeping the same insane price. - spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0g-razor: the point is to have some people (sony) who know the rules of making Intel based laptops teach apple how its done. there are concerns, like what needs to be closest to the fan, what parts should be kept away from eachother, etc. apple would have to learn that to avoid putting out a million defective laptops.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Surprises me not in the slightest. Sony VAIOs were the *worst* laptops ever made, with the exception of certain Toshiba models. Overpriced, heavy, laden with proprietary crap... Sounds right up Apple's alley.
