- shwaa, on 03/03/2009, -1/+10What is it about Apple that can bring out such love and such hate on every small bit of news?
The "Apple Tax" argument is getting really old. Yes, they charge a premium for their products. It's a premium brand. - TheAbsintheHare, on 03/03/2009, -1/+10e_e Find me a wireless networked drive with 500GB capacity for under $300 (Let alone one that acts as a 802.11n router)
D-Link's offering: 40GB for $355
Iomega: 1TB for $530 - Jerk, on 03/03/2009, -1/+10I've been through many brands of wireless routers and none have been as reliable as my Apple routers. Netgear, Linksys, D-Link, SMC, you name it, I've installed it at a customer site or my own home. I finally bought a used snow (white UFO) Airport Extreme on eBay and have since upgraded to an Airport Extreme N, then a Time Capsule. The only reason I've gotten rid of my older Apple routers is to get new features, all of my old Apple routers are still in service at customer sites or at a family's home.
- kelly, on 03/03/2009, -0/+9If only a network USB HD worked like Apple's Time Capsule then you might even have a point.
- Commodus, on 03/02/2009, -5/+13Please ignore llsethj - he's been running around like a chicken without a head spamming the AppleInsider forums, associated Digg, and mailboxes of other gadget blogs claiming that a story written on Monday based on FCC documents published the same day, is somehow the same story as one published over the weekend before such documents even existed in public.
- DavidTurnbull, on 03/03/2009, -0/+7That is a ridiculous question.
Technology evolves, get over it. - BossKey, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6I avoided Apple routers for the longest time as "overpriced." Then my D-Link started to crap out (just like the other D-Link devices I've bought...hmmm...) and so I decided to try the Time Capsule as it would provide me with not only a wireless N/wired router, but automatic versioned backup for any Macs I point at it, and a way to share a second USB disk full of media across the network. I don't even use the print server function and it's still a great value. Plus, it's been a very reliable wireless N router with good range, and numerous industry reviews (including PC publications) have put it at the top of the list of N routers or close.
The haters out there usually think it's just a hard disk with a port on it, and don't really appreciate the rather long list of things it can do for $250 refurbished or discounted. There are several non-Apple wireless-N routers priced near $200 that don't provide proportional value. Just a few dollars more for a Time Capsule and one's network is significantly enhanced. - jasmus, on 03/03/2009, -1/+6Your old product will still work, and still do want you want it to. If not, you can sell it to put towards a new one. Apple products usually have a good resale value.
Still using an iPod mini 4Gb (silver). - gluecode, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4I have a Time Capsule at home. It works as my backup device as well wireless n router. Time Capsule is great if you make several changes to files and want to go back in time to recover or view certain changes. I wish the new version is faster since the current version slows down the system considerably during backup.
- MtheoryX, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4That's because it's not just a simple hard drive. Go price a few 500GB or 1TB NAS units and get back to me.
- StandardsDT, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4Yep! The new Mac Mini is now in the store.
- Urkel, on 03/03/2009, -3/+7I own a 500gb time capsule. It's definitely a fine piece of hardware but they have to seriously reconsider their pricing structure on these. Hopefully next round they're much closer to actual market value AND either update capacity or pricing as the market gets cheaper because $300 for 500GB and $500 for 1TB in 2009 is a bit of a scam.
- shwaa, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4How do you buy any tech with an attitude like that?
If you follow tech at all, you'll see that with time the specs and features double as the cost cuts in half.
I consider it more of a blessing than a curse. - luckywabbit, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4And how is that different than other companies that do the same thing? Would you rather wait 10 years for an update and complain that it takes the manufacturer so long to provide an update?
- itsbob, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Maybe someday you can learn to read, maybe...
- BossKey, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3What machine are you backing up? I have not noticed much of a slowdown at all.
- OSJunky, on 03/03/2009, -2/+4Actually Gizmodo picked this up this morning
http://i.gizmodo.com/5162751/one+terabyte-apple-ti ... - diggimator, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2You can easily find a NAS 1TB for slightly below $200, and a USB 1TB for slightly over $100. While USB works w/ Time Machine, the only Time Machine capable NAS 1TB went for $500. Either that or you needed to plunk down cash for the AirPort Extreme USB port to get unofficially supported Time-Machine-capable NAS. Sucks if I already had a Wi-Fi router that I didn't need to replace.
- MtheoryX, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2You can get the same effect by using subversion.
Just sayin'. - lafty, on 03/03/2009, -1/+2$200 upgrade for a TB drive instead of a 500GB? What a rip! I can buy a 1TB drive for less than $100 - I can only imagine how much less it costs apple to buy 1TB drives..
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1If you think you must only have the newest product available at all times, and are willing to buy it the moment it's available, then you're part of The Problem.
- kronzdigg, on 03/03/2009, -2/+3APPLE STORE IS DOWN RIGHT NOW NEW PRODUCTS SHORTLY?
- kelly, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1@ shwaa, Realistically, they don't charge a premium. They might charge more than the competition, but typically because they are offering more.
- kelly, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1@ klowngoblin
"a premium brand with the same internals as everyone else"
They are a premium brand, albeit without a premium price. With that said, they typically offer more than their competitors.
...and no, there is not an apple tax. - Wilddigi, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1Exactly, when does apple release new products in 6 months?
- emt1451, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1I think the $35 router probably has something to do with it.
- klowngoblin, on 03/06/2009, -0/+0more? how so?
less usb ports
no esata
no finger print reader
no facial recognition from webcam to log in
no firewire on the laptops (LOL)
less keys on the keyboard
less status indicator lights to actaully tell you if a wireless radio is powered or not
no bluray in any computer
no hdmi
no swiveling web cam
stereo speakers? (Macbook air)
OSX missing a ton of things including an office suite (ubuntu has full staroffice included even on the live CD.... CD not DVD)
***** service, after90 days you have to pay, what the ***** is that? Asus is lifetime free phone support
no accidental warranty unless you pay for it (1yr by default from asus)
warranty is ***** 1 yr, asus is 2 years parts and labor INTERNATIONAL warranty.
what more are they offering?
for $999 i can get an Aspire laptop with Blueray, nvidia 9600GT Video card 512MB deticated, 4GB of ram, 500GB HDD, fingerprint reader, card reader, HDMI, 4USB Ports
for $1100 i can get an Asus N seies laptop that has blueray, 9650GT video card with 1GB of deticated video ram, 5 USB Ports, HDMI, eSATA, etc, etc
what laptop can i buy from apple that have all that stuff? i cant even buy a apple laptop let alone anything NEAR those specs.
you dont get ***** from apple except a good ass raping. i wont even start on their ram "Upgrade" prices - shibagarden, on 03/03/2009, -1/+1Until they squash Time Machine's various bugs, Time Capsule is pretty pointless. It's just too expensive to justify as a simple hard drive.
- klowngoblin, on 03/06/2009, -0/+0well my WRT54GL thats been hacked (DDWRT) and even overclocked has been running rock solid since i got it, the uptime is well over 600 days.
my WRT54GL can do wakeonlan, captive wifi, VPN Client and HOST, Vlans, QoS, other packet shaping protocols, static DHCP entries, wifi bridging, wifi client modes.
ive even upgraded my antenas to get a 9dbi gain
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/pr5owner/Rout ...
what can yours do? oh BTW mine only costs $50 CANADIAN - klowngoblin, on 03/06/2009, -0/+0dlink is the worst ***** you can buy, that is your own fault.
- klowngoblin, on 03/03/2009, -0/+0not as bad as my laptop being out of date 3 months after i bought it, apple is actually quite slow to catch up with technology
- Thud, on 03/03/2009, -0/+0Oh, and by the way, Apple also updated their entire desktop line.
- aelkins2812, on 03/03/2009, -1/+0Dumped my 1Tb TC about 3 months ago, too many issues.
- shibagarden, on 03/04/2009, -1/+0I connected a $179 1TB HD from Walmart to a $35 router. Time Machine can't consistently manage to do a successful backup with this simple configuration, yet SuperDuper does fine. So remind me…why should I buy a Time Capsule again?
- MonsterRayn, on 03/03/2009, -1/+0I'd love to get either a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme to go with my Macbook/iPhone, but from what I've heard, they're completely incompatible with Xbox Live, and that's a deal breaker for me. If they can work out the compatibility issues, I'm so there.
- klowngoblin, on 03/03/2009, -2/+0a premium brand with the same internals as everyone else
almost all apple products use seagate (same as everyone else)
almost all desktops and laptops use Micron ram, not spectacular but not as ***** as kingston, however even cheap compaq laptops use micron ram too
cpus are all intel but everyone knows this already
yes there is an apple tax. - palmer, on 03/03/2009, -6/+2It'd be great if they were ready with a revised policy of putting FireWire, matte screens, and Delete keys on every laptop!
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -10/+0Since when was Apple concerned with pricing their products close to the actual market value? Apple will try to rip as much as they can from their customers who are happy to take it.
- factsahoy, on 03/03/2009, -14/+3It'd be great if they were ready with Delete keys and matte screens for their laptops!
- Jaykungfulee, on 03/03/2009, -14/+2New time capsule? WTF they gonna add? Integrated porn portal? Navigate back in time through your entire porn collection, never lose a fvorite wanker. Types on my mofoin iPhone bizatch!
- CPUYODA, on 03/03/2009, -14/+1Time Capsule=network USB HD+Apple symbol
Of course you MUST pay the "Steve Tax" for the symbol, which is the real reason it costs twice the price of the above conglomeration.
No thanks.... - ioncelovedjane, on 03/03/2009, -15/+2Why should i buy an expensive Apple product that will be obsolete in the next 6 months by another Apple product?
- llsethj, on 03/02/2009, -28/+5This is a day old bagel (of course unreferenced)
