- estvir, on 03/21/2008, -23/+388Wow, imagine the outrage if Microsoft did this.
- gr33k, on 03/21/2008, -32/+348I was uploading songs to my ipod and I see a message asking me to install safari....fuuuuuuuuuuck that! firefox is all i need
- thatguy73, on 03/21/2008, -29/+314Sounds like some other company I've heard of...hmmm
- Erroneus, on 03/21/2008, -17/+208I was quite surprised to see Apple Software Update popup and telling me there was an update for Itunes: Safari 3.1. I almost panicked, searching for that old safari install on my machine and then I realized it was nothing more then adware from my friendly software dealer... Apple.
Thanks Apple for the spam, next time, just dont. - frygar, on 03/21/2008, -53/+213I think I speak for a lot of folks when I say this:
***** you, Apple. - shadow010, on 03/21/2008, -35/+129By definition of software that installs unwanted software onto a computer, apple software update is malware. It does this with Quicktime and iTunes as well.
- SeanRoss, on 03/21/2008, -24/+97"Safari for Windows is the fastest and easiest-to-use web browser for the PC. It displays web pages faster than any other browser and is filled with innovative features -- all delivered in an efficient and elegant user interface."
Made me laugh so hard I cried... - inactive, on 03/21/2008, -31/+104Yet more proof Apple is every bit as evil as Microsoft.
- PathDaemon, on 03/21/2008, -9/+78As a total Mac person, let me just say that this really, really sucks.
When Software Update first came to Windows, I thought, "hey, Apple's getting a chance to show off a part of its way of doing things to Windows users."
But now, pushing out non-updates? That's just wrong, and will turn more people off Apple than it will increase Safari market share. Even I, on the Vista partition of my MacBook Pro, have heartily ignored the pressure to install iTunes and Safari.
Just hit "ignore this update" and send feedback (http://www.apple.com/feedback/bootcamp.html). - inactive, on 03/21/2008, -12/+68You mean Apple? They've been doing this for years.
- lawguru, on 03/21/2008, -13/+67Latest version kept crashing my XP laptop. I uninstalled it and all is good again. Use at your own risk.
Note: I like Safari -- it just didn't play well on my Compaq laptop. :( - geoken, on 03/21/2008, -19/+72They do have the option. It's called Windows Update (maybe you've heard of it?). Last I checked there wasn't a single update I couldn't refuse.
On a related note, I'm constantly shocked by the denial that Apple is Microsoft 2.0. What to they need to do to prove that their business tactics are exactly like Microsoft's and that if they were in the position, they would act identically to MS? - MacSuxWindozSux, on 03/21/2008, -12/+63There is no way Windows Safari even comes remotely close to being as good as Firefox on windows.
If you just use a Macintosh you likely don't know this.
Plus Firefox is open source. That's our digital freedom. - borez, on 03/21/2008, -12/+62I'm on a Mac and I don't use Safari, it's nowhere near as good as Firefox. Or should I say nowhere near as good as Firefox's expandability ( Read: Plug-ins )
- mckirkus, on 03/21/2008, -16/+62I bailed on ITunes because of the darn quicktime stuff it insists on running. I like Apple stuff but sometimes I wonder if they hired the CEOs of Kazaa and Real Networks.
- sockpuppets, on 03/21/2008, -8/+53Slurm?
- rubblecovers, on 03/21/2008, -7/+49point is - apple software update should be showing updates for what i chose to install (itunes & quicktime). that is all. it's not a ***** billboard.
- deadbaby, on 03/21/2008, -29/+70Microsoft does it all the time. I don't want MSN Messenger yet it's included not only with Windows but also for Office 2008. Adobe pushes their photo software on your when you download Reader. Sun pushes OpenOffice when you download Java. Everyone does it on Windows because the users seem to accept it.
- elmetald00d, on 03/21/2008, -0/+39I think fkr3 forgot a sarcasm quote for people like you.
- fkr3, on 03/21/2008, -11/+48An annoying one though.... I don't want to be bothered every time Apple releases a piece of software they think I might like. I already get bothered enough with iTunes updates that are inexplicably big and slow downloads every single time on both my computers.
- fkr3, on 03/21/2008, -5/+40I'd rather go looking for it when I need it rather than be spammed about it?
- MagnumVP, on 03/21/2008, -5/+37Why is it that when I install iTunes + Quicktime and then tell the installer NOT to install the Automatic Update, it still does?
- BinaryFragger, on 03/21/2008, -11/+43Microsoft bundled software = evil
Apple bundled software = no big deal
delusional fanboys are funny - shadydentist, on 03/21/2008, -8/+39I'll stick with firefox, thanks.
- fkr3, on 03/21/2008, -12/+42Bloated? Never!!!!! iTunes is only using almost 140mb of memory to play a song at the moment.
- bradsh, on 03/21/2008, -4/+33Would you rather they include no internet browser? Harder to download firefox when you cant browse the internet, i imagine.
- whereiseljefe, on 03/21/2008, -7/+33When apple pushes their software on their consumers we thank the for preloading our system with productivity software right?
- Wangasta, on 03/21/2008, -5/+31it's fast and buggy...the end
- InspectorGadget, on 03/21/2008, -5/+31Yeah, got an e-mail from my parents today about this. Like most older people just doing web browsing and e-mail, they have no idea what Safari is or why Apple Software Update wanted to install it. That's really the barometer for the utility of a move like Apple made: If the generation with the most spending power and least computer experience can't figure it out in 10 seconds, it is a stupid thing to offer to install by default.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 03/21/2008, -3/+27I noticed for several weeks Quicktime was begging to be updated...
Then suddenly they were trying to install iTunes with the update...
Then last week Safari is added to the list on top of it.
I said to myself what the hell are they thinking... - grumpyrain, on 03/21/2008, -2/+26How is having "software pre-installed, with no way of deleting it" the opposite of not wanting "to be bothered every time Apple releases a piece of software they think I might like."?
- estvir, on 03/21/2008, -3/+25Vista doesn't have Messenger installed by default, not even the old "Windows Messenger" and all there is is a link to download Messenger. Also, Office 2007 doesn't install Messenger but I'm not aware of what 2008 does, do you have a source?
- Jerk, on 03/21/2008, -5/+26This only happens if you install the Apple Software Update utility when you install iTunes. I *always* do a custom install on ANY software I install to make sure I know what I'm installing.
If you've already installed Apple Software Update, you can uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs. - LordofChaosIori, on 03/21/2008, -9/+30To be honest... Safari runs light years faster than Firefox on my Macbook, and when AdBlock came out, I didn't really feel the need for Firefox anymore.
- nthitz, on 03/21/2008, -6/+27Malware? Hardly. They are just giving people an option to, by no means are they requiring it!
- LemmingJesus, on 03/21/2008, -3/+23"Great for having the same bookmarks across countless machines"
So you're one of those ***** that are the reason public computers I use are full of tool bars. - estvir, on 03/21/2008, -3/+23Woo, people are catching on that Apple isn't the glorious, friendly, do-gooder company they pretend it is and have tricked you into thinking it is.
- MJ420, on 03/21/2008, -4/+24It wont! (xp/safari 3.1)
- ellisgl, on 03/21/2008, -11/+31Makes it look like I'm viewing my sites thru a cheap lcd!
- krahzee, on 03/21/2008, -8/+28Itunes is an annoying mess to run. More updates than thought possible, ***** quicktime, and it nags the ***** out of you unitl you update and restart. Sure once it's open it's not as bad, but even there it is a bloated mess at times.
Based on the itunes experience they are going to push people to use safari? Sure, people use itunes. May do so reluctantly. I have many friends and family who only use it often enough to update thier ipod. They use winamp or another option to play files back day to day on thier pc, and itunes to update thier ipod, since they have to. It's hard enough getting people to use firefox over IE, now Apple is going to ask those same people to switch again? Won't happen. - Zindrix, on 03/21/2008, -1/+21Forced? No, I have QT and I make sure to NEVER install iTunes. You don't have to have iTunes to use QT.
- deadbaby, on 03/21/2008, -18/+37The definition of malware is software installed without your permission. When you download iTunes it clearly states you are getting QuickTime too. It asks you if you want to install Safari.
- dacheetah, on 03/21/2008, -3/+22How else will they upload their remote control code when skynet goes live?
- f4nt0m4s, on 03/21/2008, -8/+27Yay, more annoying stuff to slow down the already painfully long install of Apple's bloat ware, iTunes, on my Windows machine. Where the ***** is my iTunes light. The one that is 4mb, takes 30 seconds to install, and doesn't use globs of RAM. Why can't the ***** that wrote iTunes write a built in software updater? Why do I need to install another program to check for updates. I'm so happy there are open source alternatives to iTunes. iTunes could be a usable program if it wasn't so bloated.
- zdiddy85, on 03/21/2008, -3/+21woooooosh
- tba2287, on 03/21/2008, -1/+18Malware is installed without user permission and takes over your system without your consent. Apple isn't forcing anyone to install it, and is upfront about using it as an option. They're not trying to be like Kazaa.
- Bossman1086, on 03/21/2008, -3/+20Actually, you can turn off IE7 in Windows Update. But Apple already does this. iTunes comes with QuickTime and vice versa.
- Bossman1086, on 03/21/2008, -3/+20I ran FireFox on 512 MB of RAM. That's not to say it doesn't have a memory leak...it has many, but they are all being fixed in FireFox 3. I've been using FireFox 3 beta 4 for a bit now and it's good enough to be my main browser.
- anteyekon4myst, on 03/21/2008, -17/+34I spent the last month finding out what browser was best for my old desktop (mylaptop is dead). On an Athalon 1400 1.1 Ghz, and 256 mb of ram - Safari works the best. Opera doesn't render a lot of the pages I visit properly; I love firefox, but it takes up way too memory;Safari worked the best. It uses a lot less memory and loads pages pretty darn fast. Note: I dont use I.E. because when it crashes Windows Explorer tends to crash to, no need to explain why, and that takes a little longer to recover from.
