- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Apple's had a surprisingly smooth transition into Intel's style of incremental upgrades in processors. Previously the PowerPC processors made very slow headway - which lead to predictable upgrade times. You know the iBook was going to be refreshed this month, the iMac next month, the PowerMac just before WWDC and the PowerBook... well, we just won't talk about the PowerBook.
Since shifting to Intel we've seen several small speedbumps - the MacBook Pro, for example, debuted at 1.83GHz - but was bumped to 2.0 before launch. It appears that Apple is looking to continue this trend of quiet upgrades - focusing on the machine as a whole as opposed to it's component parts.
My only hope is that Apple can pull Intel away from the harebrained proprietary hardware shenanigans of things like ViiV and keep them focused on the - pardon the pun - core. Faster chips, lower power consumption, lower heat. Apple's philosophy - keep it simple and do it right - makes money. - nitroskanker, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Think different!!
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24Good to see Apple's keeping Intel in check.
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Not only was that a stupid comment, but two out of the three lines of it were used to spam somthing we don't care about...
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Isn't that just a polite way of saying that Apple are a pain in the ass to work with? Apple's history is littered with companies who knew that already.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11This is great, now Apple is Intel's savior. Not that they weren't a huge player before or anything, no. It's not like they've been the #1 player in the cpu industry for ages. No, they needed apple to raise up, now, they can finally become profitable. Thank the gods for Apple.
Oh and before you guys start, I'm not an Apple hater, I own three macs. I just find it ridiculous that all of a sudden, Apple starts getting credit for Intel's successes. - chookalana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11If they did make the fans turn on quicker, people would still bitch.
- finkployd, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20"One area of importance to Apple is heat dissipation. Intel's ability to deliver mobile chips that consume less power while offering better performance was one of the reasons that convinced Apple to make the switch from IBM's rival PowerPC chips."
- from what I have heard they aren't doing the best job at this now are they unless they count the dissipation of heat to ones legs as a breakthrough? - UserAgent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Remember Intel is just supplying procs"
Except that Intel is supposedly designing the motherboard for the "MacPro" as well - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10As is Microsoft's history. What's your point? Off topic.
From the article:
"We were hoping for that to happen and that certainly happened," he said.
Apple's view of how the computer market will evolve has influenced Intel's product roadmap, Chandrasekher said. That impact will be felt over the long term, rather than showing up soon, he said.
When Anand said "…we were hoping for that to happen…", what he meant was, "…we were hoping that Apple would explain their view of how the computer market will evolve to give us an advantage over AMD." - elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8And they also offer the 2.16 GHz MacBook Pro model at the top end.
- gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10It breaks something.
The ability to have kids. - darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@spoonard:
Expensive and crappy? Not only are the computers of the highest quality, but OSX would make it worth the price even if it was crappy. - miestersean, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Anand Chandrasekher. That took 5 seconds...
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Right, because names like Wolniewicz, Bongiorno, O'Callaghan and Papadopoulos are so much easier.
The world != your small town in America. - AnalogDaylight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Actually, the Intel Core Duo's are very cool chips. Having just purchased a new Vaio with a 2.16 Core Duo, it sits nicely on my lap after 5 hours of heavy use.
And while we're on the subject of heat, Apple knows nothing about managing heat. The PowerPC chips are years behind Intel and AMD in power consumption and heat management.
Hopefully now Apple is learning from Intel about powering computers. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Brokeback Mountain.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I am waiting for that future chip which will not require a fan at all." This guy got burried for saying that!! But the truth is we will get that someday, and we all want it too!
- kerplunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good luck waiting for that.
- mscamara, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You are really mistaken to think that. I actually believe that this all article is full of c*rp. What's the market share of apple compare to the rest of the industry? Microsoft can basicaly dictate to intel what features to include or not include cause if they refuse to support it at the os level....They can also threaten supporting features in amd and not in intel if intel doesn't acquiesce...I don't see intel doing anything different today or in the short term future that has been influenced by apple. to the contrary apple had to give up ppc to turn to intel so they could have more performing computers. By the way, how could they influence intel when they could not ibm or freescal?
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Comparing the IBM of then to the IBM of now doesn't really make sense. The world has changed way too much since those days.
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i keep telling windows people that in 2 years it will be as it always was... macs will use a processor that is just too advanced for windows. won't matter who makes it. we'll be back to a world where macs can run windows in emulation and windows will continue using old tech that is just too light duty to run os x in emulation. thats pretty much the proofs in the pudd'n test and why mac people are just not that excited about running windows. we always could.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2+1 digg for humor
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This is an interesting article because it shows the Intel relationship is not a one-way street - Apple is able to convince Intel to change a little as well, and by slightly modifying the direction Intel is moving the processor line also giving Apple the advantage of essentially driving the whole PC market direction to somewhat match thier vision.
I'm sure Microsoft also has some leverage over Intel, I kind of wonder who has the stronger pull in being able to propose a direction to take. I have to think that Apple being a more direct producer of consumer goods has to be a little more appealing to Intel than Microsoft, who does not sell as many hardware products directly to consumers. - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1While I agree with you, this isn't something that needs to be stated in every story (which is currently happening. Sorry dude, but thumbs down to you.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Bah, that's old news. Apple wants a Hot Carl.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1chookalana, when they did have the fans turn faster there was too much of a whine. Apple fixed that by turning down the fans, turning up the heat and claimed that the MBP was not a laptop. Think Different.
- mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I'm not against Apple or Intel, but nothing about this article is news. The only new thing on this article which we don't already know from Apple's own information from key notes and otherwise, is the quote from Aanand Chandrashekar @ Intel. Aside from that, nothing is news or digg worthy.
Sorry, but no digg, and very close to the lame side b/c of the lack of news worthiness. - pbuschma, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11"I just hope they push them on issues such as 'cooler running laptops' a bit more than the article already hinted at", he wrote with the skin of his fingers sticking to his hot new MacBook Pro ....
- safer9999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Where is the quantum jump in proccessing power?
Neal Saferstein - Tom_Riddle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@mscamara
LOL, Apple didn't try to convince IBM of anything.
learn your computing history. Steve Jobs is completely against IBM and everything they stand for. - yesno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My biggest concern is heat. I am waiting for that future chip which will not require a fan at all.
- ScrabbyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1damn kids
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1lets think about processer temprature while we are @ it! But i think the apple intel deal is a good one in a way, the new macbooks can run windows and osx, nice. !
- SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Not everyone likes Steve Jobs that much.... eww.
- inturnaround, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5So where did Intel and Apple ultimately decide to go on their honeymoon?
And when will it end? - Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -13/+9"Pushing us to new directions"..... Great, just what we need, white plastic covered chips that scratch easy and overheat.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6Maybe if they'd turn the damn fans on every once and a while, it'd help.
- Tribute85, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Anand Chandrasekher?! ...Damn, now there's a name.
How would you like to go to have gone to school, only to be told you're going to have to learn how to spell that SOB...
- jo3c, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2wonder why no one have sue apple for their Sterility??
- OSXTiger, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Good one :/.
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4:) thats the apple we all know and love. or at least those of us that own macs.
- RoyalRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Why bother reengineering for Apple? Digg is surely becoming a haven for apple fanboys, no doubts about that. Oh well, i'll digg it......... NOT!

3296 stories seems like quite a few to me. But only 1083 have been about Apple so far. - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -22/+11Instead of "Extreme Plus Ultra Omega Edition" chips we'll actually see progress? Amazing, and I hate Apple!
- spoonard, on 10/12/2007, -18/+6Just because Intel rolls out a new chip doesn't mean Apple is gonna immediately embrace it...I fully expect Apple and Apple users to skip full generations of chips...Apple hardware is too expensive to just run out and buy a new one every time a new chip comes out. Remember Intel is just supplying procs...everything else is still gonna be Apple, and that means expensive and crappy.
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -24/+10he has no life other then digg.com
- heymark, on 10/12/2007, -21/+6ROBOT ALERT.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -35/+15Can we get some better naming? Core 2 duo? What's next, Core Duo 2 duo dos deux?
