- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2only digg people don't have iPods.... for some reason they think that whatever is mainstream is uncool... so for Apple to have an 80% mp3 player market share means that the iPod sucks right?
hypocrites... - warning9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know... it would suck if they made a new nano that played videos... why? Because I just bought one...
- bakerw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it confuses me, that steve jobs really objects to the thought of a video ipod, but they are (rumored to be) releasing one oct 12. i dont think its a video ipod. i dont know what else it could be, but i just dont see jobs going back on what he has said in the past.
roll apple roll - atf487, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1someone posted this in the apple event thread, it would be the best way to make a video ipod.
http://homepage.mac.com/grahambower/ipod_predictions.html - BOOFMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought they would hold off longer on a video iPod until iPod sales lagged. Maybe they have, this announcement is coinciding with Apples fourth quarter financial reports.
Watching Firefly on one would be awesome; I ripped episodes to my PSP- so much fun. - softmod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This has been speculated too many times. I'll believe it when I see it!
- applesux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's see - announce switch to Intel chips - kill Mac market for 12 months, slowly release new products that have been sitting on shelves at Apple for years, to keep money coming in till the switch is complete. Otherwise Apple is dead. For this thinking, Jobs is a "marketing genius"? Duh.
- stilesja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does no one remember the year of HD? This is the year of HD. Apple will announce a Movie store where you can purchase HD movies and watch them on your Mac/PC or Sync them to your iPod and plug into a new dock that connects to your Home theatre to playback the HD content. MPAA is satisfied because you won't be able to burn the data it remains protected on your iPod. iPod will be upgraded to 40 and 80GB to provide additional storage for these large files.
- roflcopter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Soon the iPod will just be a Palm with a bigger hard drive.
- TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Video is the sort of thing people get excited over, but then realize won't be as practical as music. Music happily exists in the background, while movies demand that you have your head facing the screen, preferably also having your mind focused on the plot. However, the same thing could be said for the Gameboy...
But video games are enjoyable for longer. Most people only watch movies once, or maybe twice.
I predict a large number of early adopters, then sales will sharply fall as they tell their friends it's not such a big deal, thus causing their friends in the market for a portable entertainment to go for non-video nanos, or regular ipods if they will still remain in the market. - silentauthority, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is it with people and hating on iPods.
whether you like it or not... they are the best player on the market. smaller. easier to use.
not to mention they have 80% of the mp3 music player market... - FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple introduced the iPod, and then later created the iTMS in order to feed those iPods. They are aware of the need for content, if a video iPod is indeed what will be introduced. So all these comments along the lines of "What videos?" and "the screen's too small!" and similar are assuming they know what will be introduced on Wednesday. They don't. I don't. We'll all see. But one thing you can assume is that they will have thought of all of these objections and accounted for them somehow. That's their business to think of the things all us whining geeks aren't seeing right now.
Now watch them introduce something totally different that has nothing to do with video! LOL. - Cyborg771, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally. I have been holding off on buying a new iPod until they make a video one.
- thecapitalizt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Steve reverses what he says every now and then. He never say "we are never going to make a video iPod", he just said "We don't think the market is ready for one."
I for one, will not be buying a video ipod. There, I said it. First of all, if I watch a video, its probably going to be on my laptop, with its big screen. Either that or streaming it to an airport-express-like dongle for my tv (WHICH WOULD BE EXCESSIVELY COOL).
Besides, I already have a PSP. And if apple launches a video store, it will probably be like, 1 or 2 weeks before DVD Jon cracks the encryption. The PSP supports H.264 anyways. - infectbda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that the bigger news will be that the iTunes Media Store is offering music videos and other content to actually put on a video device. Sure, there are other video players on the market today, just as there were other MP3 players on the market when the iPod/Music Store came out.
Other video devices hadn't sold that well because, for the average consumer, what content is available to put on one of them? Almost nothing right now. I think Apple knows that they have to provide content in order to really sell a video device, and I think they are finally going to bring a fairly complete (or at least more complete then in the past) solution to market very soon. - SoulRebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a video iPod will be the lamest thing ever...
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That'll be sweet if it's going to play on the screen of the iPod. Earlier rumors had it that it would only play through a video output into a television or computer monitor (which would suck). If I can play ripped movies on it, I'm demanding one for Xmas, because I totally need to watch Firefly while standing in line at the grocery store or while driving or during lectures.
- iskatebad914, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah but they dont look as cool. and theyre really big too. they said this is smaller than the 60 gig!
- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can the new ipod play video? I didn't really understand the article.
- nicholasmchugh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I searched to see if anyone posted this yet but no find. When I went to submit I found this. Good Post!! Atleast for podafiles :)
- MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doesnt news like this come up every time apple does one of them get togethers?
- iskatebad914, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and the interface sucks on the creative players
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll be getting one, can't wait to see it.
- marcsup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is a really great idea for apple
- fieldfalcon2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wait... how many times has this happened? I mean it's like every week they are going to com out with a new iTunes or iPod. This is crazzzy.
- Gomobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So far I haven't seen much reason to stream Diggnation to my TV, still, knowing I could would be awesome.
- honeycut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey reaver - are you looking at the same article mate? how much clearer can it be?
"Apple Computer has begun production of a new version of its iPod digital music player that will be capable of playing videos, AppleInsider has learned." - ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have no desire to watch movies on a 3 inch screen, however, divx movies on a TV via video output would be cool.
- VinniePaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it wont happen.
- shanmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple is not stupid. They know the economy is going to turn to sh*t in 2006. This is their last, desperate attempt to reach into the pockets of the dying US consumer. Get your Video iPod now, so that when you are broke, laid off, and have nothing to do, you can watch videos all day. You heard it first here.
- rusty_g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too much talk, not enough action.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I think a Video iPod would be an incredible consumer-appeal item. "
Umm... riiiiiight. What videos will you be playing on your portable video player? And when *exactly* will you actually be using this device?
Please answer those two questions. If you actually think about it, the actual market for this product is insanely SMALL.
I have my iPod because I can listen on the way to work in the car, and perhaps some at work. That's it. If I want to WATCH A MOVIE, I do it when I can pay attention to it. At home. On a large screen.
A video iPod is worthless. If this is true (I still really doubt it), then it will be a bad move on Apple's part. - zer0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's effen great they just have to release this right after i buy my ipod...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stealthboy
Umm... riiiiiight. What videos will you be playing on your portable video player? And when *exactly* will you actually be using this device?
Well I think Apple will either offer a way of encoding your video like they do audio--QuickTime driven. You do know how powerful QuickTime is... right?. Or third parties will be supported; Divx, Xvid and others. The linux people have created a way of playing video on current iPods... so I it wont be to difficult doing the same for a device that was created for that purpose. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stealthboy, my cookie now please. Thanks.
- Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoopee friggin doo dah. Who is going to want to watch a movie or music video on that tiny arse screen? You'll all need bifocals by the time you turn 30 years old.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how many apple rumours do I have to sit through...
- Flammadeao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0quick note maad, if it does only play clips then there WILL be people who mod it so it plays full feature films
- simon32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That would be nice. Since I'm not going to buy an new iPod until they play videos. My 3G iPod's screen is cracked.
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0half you people never even touched an iPod.
but i hope this rumors crap is true... but i also want to see quad core Powermacs (dual dual core) - craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm an AI regular and am glad to see the site on digg. :)
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"not to mention they have 80% of the mp3 music player market..."
Sadam had 99% of the vote, he must have been a good leader.
Sorry, market share does not a good PMP make, by your logic Windows is the greatest operating system too. - acraig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stealthboy:
Am I saying that it is the greatest product ever?
No
What I said was that it would be an incredible consumer appeal item. That statement has nothing to do with whether it is a good idea.
Pornography is an incredible consumer appeal item. Does that mean I want it, or that the product itself is good?
No
I think that people will buy video ipods. That is what I said. Will I buy one? I don't know.
Once again: irrational flaming directed toward me. - hawks5999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rsvp_media@apple.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Repost of my comment to your comment from the other video iPod story.
Eric.... UNTIL WE GET OUR ***** VPOD YOU DOLT!. With every Pod rumor there is equal amount of people like yourself repeating this same crap. So shut it buddy, you're ***** up my high. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great just what we need. Another tiny LCD to view videos on.
- digg - acraig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you sir. That's my opinion exactly.
...and I expect to get nuked for it. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now we, the people, of earth can free video as we are freeing music. the artists will regain control, and those who live by sucking the soul of artists for their dollar value will fall to the wayside. the people will take back their culture from the companies they paid to steal it.
in the desolate cultural landscape of america, we are witnessing the beginnings of what will almost certainly become an enormous cultural revolution that will span the globe and redefine our concpts of art and artistry. it will be beautiful. it will be ours. - j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eyePod
- Gomobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With the above story keep in the recent "value added rumor" of an new video-streaming airport:
