Apple planning biggest back-to-school promo yet
appleinsider.com — Apple as early as Monday is expected to announce its 2008 back-to-school promotion, which will encourage students to purchase a new Mac through some of the biggest incentives in the company's history, AppleInsider has learned.

- jarrod10, on 05/30/2008, -13/+11ya same here but theyre really expensive.
- Risingashes, on 05/30/2008, -7/+20Why are these guys getting Dugg down? High price is a perfectly legitimate concern.
Some people don't want to pay a massive premium for shiny packaging.- Masna, on 05/30/2008, -7/+7I love how people think that Apple overprices just because they feel like it.
Macs are quality computers, with extremely quality hardware, and an brilliant solid OS. You get what you pay for, get used to it, its capitalism. - yetAnotherCroc, on 05/30/2008, -3/+2@Masna: I love how people think Apple is somehow different from other companies. They maintain the high price for two reasons:
1)Because they can. The almost religious following allows for price gouging. Also some products (like the iPod) are so far above the competition in quality that they can easily overprice it (Don't tell me they spent that much money developing it)
2)Because a higher price adds to the illusion of luxury. In the end its the same components as a pc. A GeForce chip is a GeForce chip whether its in an Apple or a Dell. - migitalwarfare, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3@yetAnotherCroc: Oh, god forbid a company take advantage of a situation and profit off their products. Yes, iPods are, by far, the best selling portable media player, so why shouldn't they be allowed to charge more for them? If you're the best in the market, and you can keep consistently high prices without having your sales suffer, why the hell not? The same goes for their computers. If they can get away with charging higher prices for the same equipment you get from anyone else, and your sales do nothing but grow, there's no reason to back the prices down to make people like you happy.
They have the advantage of having a high quality image to most people. If all they were concerned about was growing their market share, they'd be in the price wars right along with the rest of the competition. They're obviously more concerned with maintaining their high quality image and keeping their customers coming back time and again more than they're concerned with making their products easily affordable.
In the end, the customer's perception of your product is key to doing well as a company. If they ever start having money issues, THEN they can drop prices slightly, and all those people who wished Apple would sell their stuff cheaper will then go out and take advantage of the situation, thus, bailing Apple out of their money troubles. There's just too many good reasons for why they keep their prices high

The MacBook is a far superior machine, and warrants a greater price tag.- Jaydo, on 05/30/2008, -2/+5Most people don't even use the Macbook for all the extra things it adds on; thus why a lot of people don't want to pay that high.
Also, most people could spend the money the WOULD spend on a mac, or even a ***** name brand and build something superior.
And THAT'S the problem many of us have.
If we feel there's a reason for US to spend extra for the premium, we will, but until then it just doesn't really interest us.
(us being people who don't want to buy a mac.)
- Jaydo, on 05/30/2008, -2/+5Most people don't even use the Macbook for all the extra things it adds on; thus why a lot of people don't want to pay that high.
- jgrossma, on 05/30/2008, -1/+3Most Macs have similar prices to comparable PCs. The problem is that Apple doesn't make a low end laptop so even though a MacBook costs more than the $500 laptop in the Dell (or other mass market PC brand) you're getting a lot more computer for the money.
- rgon, on 05/30/2008, -5/+13Laptops for some, miniature American flags for all!

Shouldn't be too hard to do, though; the previous hardware discount wasn't that good. The software discount (on stuff like Leopard and iLife) is almost not even worth it either... only $7!- ekSD, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3At my computer store on campus (UCF), Leopard was sold for $69 the day it came and it continues to be that way. On Apple's website for education, they apply a certain percent discount to all products; on campus, more competitive prices are negotiated. Even iLife and Aperture 2.0 run at $69 (the only downside being that my copy of Aperture isn't eligible for an upgrade).

- Khast, on 05/30/2008, -21/+14Here would be a good deal. How about Apple make their computers comparable in price to the PCs? (Notebooks and Desktops)
I look for features I need/want and then look at who is cheaper. Sorry Apple, trendy wasn't a desired feature...power, compatibility, and games were, however...- FDDIcent, on 05/30/2008, -5/+15if you actually compare prices between same specification macs and pc's you'll see they are the same. Apple just doesn't sell cheap low end laptops, so you just keep buying a new $600 dell every year cause they're so reasonably priced.
- Syphon8, on 05/30/2008, -8/+5If you would. You'd see that they're not. You can configure a similar PC for half the price most times.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 05/30/2008, -6/+5Shuttup you! Truth has no place on Digg!
/Mac user - HolyChimp, on 05/30/2008, -0/+6It varies. Normally when Apple refreshes a product line they are some of the best value hardware in a bang/buck manner, but Dell and co. drop their prices and upgrade their lines a lot more than Apple do, so the Dell becomes the better deal. Then Apple refreshes the line....
- tacojohn48, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3I thought the same thing until I went to Dell and configured a laptop to the same specs as a MacBook.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 05/30/2008, -6/+5Shuttup you! Truth has no place on Digg!
- digitalarcanum, on 05/30/2008, -6/+4I smell rampant fanboyism! I deal with this ***** on 4chan's /g/ board all the time. the only computers on apple's line-up that are actually considered a bargain for the price are the mac pros and the imacs, in terms of cost compared to competitors and/or performance, even then, it's debatable: you're a tool if you get an imac, it's essentially a laptop without a battery, and I doubt your everyday user is going to need a mac pro. everything else really is over priced compared to what the competitors give you.
Sorry Apple, it'll take more than a free mp3 player to get me to join the legion
p.s. itunes sucks, also: update your mp3 players and phone to where they're detected as mass storage devices under windows. everyone else can do it, why can't you? - Khast, on 05/30/2008, -5/+1riiiiiiiiiight.....Sure Dell sucks, I suppose next you are going to tell me any Non-Apple computer is inferior.
I have a Toshiba...same laptop for 5 1/2 years. (hell, I have an old Compaq 486 laptop, which is still up and running...Windows 95...but it serves it's purpose as a DOS-Box.)
all my desktop computers are built by me, using parts from a mom-n-pop computer store. I haven't had to replace anything, short of an upgrade or two. ($350 for the initial configuration.)- HolyChimp, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2You know, rather than having a whole computer as a DosBox, you could just use DosBox! But then you'd have to use the old 486 as a file server or something, because throwing away old hardware is criminal.
- Syphon8, on 05/30/2008, -8/+5If you would. You'd see that they're not. You can configure a similar PC for half the price most times.
- luftegrofnetfo, on 05/30/2008, -3/+7They are fairly comparable in price. Apple markets their products in the premium market rather than bargain bin. It's a niche that's worked out for them quite well.
- digitalarcanum, on 05/30/2008, -3/+3right, so that's why asus, the maker of the eeePC, smallest and cheapest sub-compact in existence manufactures some of Apple's hardware, right?
that's why they support ATI and Nvidia cards too even though they've released tons of problem drivers, huh?
apple's hardware isn't magically higher quality, they just have less hardware to support than microsoft and/or various linux distros, which makes their hardware and software seem more stable. If Apple opened up OSX to run on any hardware (see: OSX86/hackintosh) there would be just as massive a ***** as what people see on windows.- HolyChimp, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3Yes, and that's one of the best ways to get a stable system. To quote the person you're replying to... "It's a niche that's worked out for them quite well."

- stockjones, on 05/30/2008, -19/+5Lol no offense, but Apple has a long way to go before Id consider them for the enterprise other than the marketing dept. For one, they had better beef up the support for security level enterprise applications/hardware, and offer business support in line with companies like Dell or HP. There is no way in hell an administrator should have to go to the local Apple store for support. Thats just to name a few.
- deadbaby, on 05/30/2008, -0/+9This is an educational discount primarily for students. It has nothing to do with enterprise/business computing.

http://digg.com/tech_news/Court_Finds_Dell_Guilty_ ... - aserer511, on 05/30/2008, -7/+1EXACTLY; here's the problem with MacBooks. Sure, the macbook is competent (albeit a bit overpriced) but maybe if they stuffed a 1.66 GhZ C2d in a macbook and only gave it 768mb of ram and sold it for 750, they'd quintuple sales. - ThePwnyExpress, on 05/30/2008, -2/+12i'm still on a powerbook g4.... been wanting to upgrade to a macbook pro though...
- codyph55, on 05/30/2008, -2/+4same here, i got my powerbook back when the 2005 back to school discount was going on.... the discount is good usually about 300-400 bucks plus an ipod, plus 200-300 off a printer, you cant ask for a better deal then that!
- crashingechelon, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2I got mine back at the end of 2005. I still love that thing as i did the day i bought it and I would get a Macbook/Pro but I'll wait till either it dies or if the software starts to require intel chips more often.
- ThePwnyExpress, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1ah, i got mine jan of '06... the 12"... and the battery is so crap right now... seriously horrible battery life... and i wouldn't mind the isight and new software... i'm going with the pro this summer in all probability.
- munna80, on 05/30/2008, -7/+1And we should care about that because...?
- boffert, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2Ditto - 1.67GHz PB G4 15" here.
I've been waiting for a sensible replacement for the old PowerBook G4 12". I love the eeePC and these other dinky PCs, but they're just not really heavyweight enough for me just yet. :-)- XxtraLarGe, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2I have the exact same thing, but I like to alternate between laptop & desktop when I buy a new computer, so I just got the new 3.06 GHz iMac :)
- faizal5k, on 05/30/2008, -5/+6***** yea! i'm going to stony brook university this fall, and i'm getting a loan soon...so i'm gonna get me a macbook :)
- batmanz, on 05/30/2008, -4/+5Oh yeah, sounds great...Have fun being broke...
- HolyChimp, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2It's part of the student experience.
- cawpin, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1No it isn't. You don't have to break yourself to get a degree. It isn't free money, people.
- HolyChimp, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2It's part of the student experience.
- batmanz, on 05/30/2008, -4/+5Oh yeah, sounds great...Have fun being broke...
- Kingoftherings, on 05/30/2008, -17/+11I still won't buy one. You couldn't hand me one of those for free.
- utinam, on 05/30/2008, -5/+3You could hand it to me for free. So I could sell it to a machead :)
- steviesteveo, on 05/30/2008, -0/+6It's never a good idea to cut yourself off from free laptops, what will the spam mailers do now?
Believe it or not, should someone hand me a free macbook pro, I'd probably say thank you and be happy I don't need to pay for a new laptop. You'd have to -hate- Apple to turn down free stuff - digitalarcanum, on 05/30/2008, -9/+4If I got a macbook/pro for free:
for maximum trolling efficiency I would travel to the WWDC keynote conference, upstage steve jobs, drop the macbook on the floor and take a sledge hammer to it, then collect the tears of fanboys everywhere.- Twee, on 05/30/2008, -2/+5who cares? its just a laptop.
- munna80, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1That and peanuts
- jwoulf, on 05/30/2008, -9/+3If someone gave me a free Mac laptop. I would attempt to install an OS that is NOT MacOS. If that failed, I would destroy it.
- lhsonic, on 05/30/2008, -2/+5Like the other guy said... boot camp much ring a bell? That's so disappointing.. to hear of Apple-hate when a person hasn't even done their research on the damn platform. Ironic too, people try hard to get Mac on PC and you're going against that... nice.
- DMCer, on 05/30/2008, -1/+6It's called Boot Camp, and you're a bit late.
- leethefilmer, on 05/30/2008, -0/+4Wow, all you guys hate apple that bad?
- munna80, on 05/30/2008, -2/+5No, they just think they're cool for saying such things
- fLUx1337, on 05/30/2008, -3/+12Hope its good and doesn't include getting a product I don't need as an incentive (i.e. iPod).
I was just this second looking on eBay too see how much Macbooks are selling for, and as usual Macs keep like 80% of there value, even if its a year old!! Guess that's a good thing, though I will be keeping mine until it dies.
Though trying to work out how I can afford it, £750 here with a student discount, around $1500. So hopefully Apple gives us £100 ($200) off or something, that would be sweet.......but still wouldn't be what you Americans pay! Jesus I hate my country so much.....VAT can go to hell!! xD- Typhoon2009, on 05/30/2008, -3/+2We DO pay around $1500 :S
- paranoiattack, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2The MBP is over $1500, but the MacBook is only $1100 for the cheapest model.
- fLUx1337, on 05/30/2008, -0/+4Yep I mean the normal Macbook, the Pro is way out of my budget. Lowest priced Macbook Pro (15") works out at $2600.
Not sure why we pay that much, even VAT at 17.5% doesn't justify it at all. Its simply rip-off Britain....bah...
- Typhoon2009, on 05/30/2008, -3/+2We DO pay around $1500 :S
- TimesHero, on 05/30/2008, -14/+9apple can gargle my junk!
- D14BL0, on 05/30/2008, -5/+38Why is an unconfirmed rumor allowed to be on the front page?
Here's a rumor. Steve Jobs has worn the same pair of boxers for the past thirty years. FRONT PAGE, AHOY!- nmnnotmyname, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3Buried, that's not a rumor, Hardcore Apple fanboys have pictures confirming the same exact tag is on the boxers.
- munna80, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1Rumors are not allowed on the first page? They account for 50% of the articles there...
- adml_shake, on 05/30/2008, -1/+7Well hopefully it's an actual deal and not some "well give you 200 bucks off if you add on a 200 dollar device or more that you probably already own" crap they did last year. I also wonder if they do offer some price off of their macbook line if that's on top of the Student and Teacher discount you can get already.
- bxblox, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2Its pretty much how they get rid of previous generation hardware. They offer it as a packaged incentive that you need to buy to get the rebate. One month later you'll be seeing dancing silhouettes with a shinier toy.
- Freedom4Tibet, on 05/30/2008, -2/+1Dude you are seriously retarded. If they gave you $200 for adding a $200 device, then that is equivalent to them giving you $200 worth of devices for FREE. And that would be a sick ass deal. You made yourself look like an idiot. Nice job.
- cottonThePirat, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1It's called ebay. get $200 ipod free after rebate == $150 cash in your pocket after selling it on eBay
- aresef, on 05/30/2008, -2/+5And here I was already planning to pick up a Macbook anyway. Win. And that's not even thinking about the education discount.
- cawpin, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1You'll save more buying refurbished.
- RationalXubrnce, on 05/30/2008, -2/+3 Back to School deals at the end of July are early. At the end of May they're insulting and just plain stupid. Not a knock on the computers, just this mistimed promo.
- navspecwarcom, on 05/30/2008, -8/+2True story. Been to a high level supplier meeting about 6 weeks ago and Apple folks mentioned that they are gearing up for the biggest back to school gig ever. Watch for solid state drives in their entire product line, plus some significant upgrades in terms of video/photo on their new iPhone. Can't write more 'cause of Apples stingent NDA's....sorry. You guy's will be surprised!
- nycmac247, on 05/30/2008, -1/+5More plural apostrophes -- should I just get used to it???
I feel like I'm beating my head against the wall here (or should I say "hear").
I know the US is slowly becoming a third world country but I stil find myself shaking my fist at the Gods.
Maybe I should just think of the fall of the Soviet Union? That's how its probably going to happen to the US, anyway ... the stoke of a pen late at night / wake up in the morning and its every state on their own...
OK; OK. I guess that would make us a "second world" nation --> which isn't as bad. (?)- nmnnotmyname, on 05/30/2008, -1/+1Stupidity is unavoidable. Get used to it.

- nmnnotmyname, on 05/30/2008, -1/+1Stupidity is unavoidable. Get used to it.
- steviesteveo, on 05/30/2008, -1/+1That's not a very restrictive NDA - "everything will be upgraded, we will use SSD technology in our products, we have brought in hardware makers to improve the media performance of our new flagship" Actually, it sounds like stuff I recognise from digg's front page.
That sounds about right though, although, if Apple puts a 32 or a 64 GB drive in a student's laptop I'll ask where they expect the illegally downloaded music and pornography to go.
If you think about it, students are one of the last markets that -needs- a high capacity laptop drive, home users can use inexpensive external harddrives, mobile workers just don't need it to do their job, office workers still get to use desktops, but students are limited to what can fit inside the laptop chasis and are limited to a small dorm room to keep all their stuff in.
- nycmac247, on 05/30/2008, -1/+5More plural apostrophes -- should I just get used to it???
- rowlodge, on 05/30/2008, -1/+3hope they lower prices again.
- DeathGod321, on 05/30/2008, -4/+8Did someone hijack my rss feed or has the tech section turned solely into the apple section?
- digitalarcanum, on 05/30/2008, -2/+3welcome to digg. please enjoy your stay.
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/30/2008, -4/+3You can always try not reading the article. It seems to work pretty well if you ask me.
- ross., on 05/30/2008, -2/+9This is *****, there's no substance to this article. I'm an Apple fanboy and even this is too much.
- ptFoe, on 05/30/2008, -0/+4What Apple now claims it has a patent on Back To School Gadget promotions.
- ibone, on 05/30/2008, -4/+5I often wonder if a digg submittal about steve jobs wiping his ***** would make the front page.
Somehow I think it would.- jwoulf, on 05/30/2008, -4/+2I think anything that Steve "Rim" Jobs does these days will make the front page. Ironically, if he ever sells a computer that ISN'T worthless, the mactards will bury the article.
- Maozeng93, on 05/30/2008, -5/+0hope its good and wait to see what happen in future http://www.discovery5000.com/chanpin_view.asp?id=7 ...
- batmanz, on 05/30/2008, -7/+2Oh, they're launching a back to school campaign? So that means they're cool, right? Oh, well then, if they are hip and trendy, of course I'll buy one...
...(takes big gulp of Apple Kool-Aid)...
/sarcasm - nancymiss, on 05/30/2008, -16/+1hope they lower prices again

That's right, it does like media and *****! Your Macbook will make your movie FOR you!
- telepheedian, on 05/30/2008, -9/+2Meh, I'm probably going to get an eee or wind, can't stand apple as a company, though their products aren't half bad, just insanely overpriced. Besides, I've already got an 80gb Zune.
- zardoz73, on 05/30/2008, -2/+4Advertising as news! Who'da thunk it? Bury, lame.
- hoopy22, on 05/30/2008, -3/+2So lame.
- nastronomical, on 05/30/2008, -5/+3Word of advice...wait till september 9th and you will see the price of the IPHONE 3G go from 399 to 299.
- jwoulf, on 05/30/2008, -7/+1I feel sorry for any student who gets stuck with a useless piece of ***** Mac because of this promotion...
