- Dweller99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+84Glad to see that the artificial crippling of Quicktime's full screen ability (something that every media player on the planet since the dawn of time has been and will continue to be capable of) has been removed. As for labeling it a "feature" well.. to each there own I guess. I would call it more "about f-ing time you quit trying to force me into upgrading to Pro to get simple basic functionality out of your software, Apple." than anything else.
but that's just me. - crackah, on 10/11/2007, -6/+62full screen QT is not a feature, its just catch up.....
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+31i want a tabbed finder, damn it
- lykathea, on 10/11/2007, -10/+27Full screen Quicktime, another great innovation by Apple.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I think real player had a similar restriction back in the day. But thats HARDLY a defense! I can understand Apple having a pro version of QT for other operating systems, but why the hell does Apple care so much about making an extra 30 bucks after you pay 2000 for your Mac? Just kinda insulting, to me at least.
- bns1201, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11holy crap thats great....i never thought of that but thats exactly what i always hate is those friggin finder screens not being tabbed
- jhuebel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10/sarcasm
- YuriSakazaki, on 10/11/2007, -8/+17Wow, fullscreen Quicktime? This has been keeping me at bay for years, now I'm ready! I'm ordering my Mac Pro now!
- djh816, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I don't understand. If ZFS is already built in, why do they have a download (Leopard only) for ZFS on the ADC website?
- Darcy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Will we be getting full screen QT for Windows?
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7so..ZFS is in Leopard after all? Did Steve Jobs pull it from his Keynote at WWDC because that Sun CEO bragged about it the week before?
- salmonmoose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Just install Media Player Classic - it uses the same libraries and gives full-screen. The limitation is just an excuse to gouge cash. It's a far more functional player anyhow.
By OS 10.9 you'll even be able to save a stream without spending a cent! - ricksite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Free fullscreen QuickTime isn't new. QuickTime 2.5 had fullscreen and export as standard features. QuickTime 3.0 added the "pro" features as a paid upgrade.
- akexakex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well.. read only support that is
- cmiller1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4you guys do realize that before quicktime 3 or 4 you could play full screen movies in it ;)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It seems like it, Steve got pissed so he removed it from the keynote. It seems that Apple WILL have ZFS read/write/format in 10.5, but only in 10.5.1 from what we hear.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3exactly... Leopard is years behind Linux
- markstory, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I didn't know people still used qt. I find it to be a horribly narrow little app. VLC has been far more capable for me. I don't have to worry about adding in all the non-qt codecs just to get qt to play torrented tv shows.
- coolfactor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yes, I used to purchase the $30 QT upgrade, but the free VLC has won me over for the past 3 years. I'll be waiting until QuickTime 8.0 before going Pro again.
- adinb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3guess there'll still be a place for pathfinder in leopard!
I just wish I could really replace finder with pathfinder....everytime I try switching completely over, I run into a zillion little bugs that always drag me back from being able to stay in pathfinder full time. - Protoss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2FLAC in QT is also supposedly included in the Leopard CoreAudio API, but no ones taken advantage of it yet.
- marlonmunsen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3dude you just blew my mind
- koko775, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3And barely at that. It's just a UI change, since you can use applescript to get QT to display fullscreen. Still, it's damn frustrating and I agree that it can only be a Good Thing.
- ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How hard was enabling it? Really... It is the weirdest thing ever... You buy brand new 4 core G5 like me, you get $400 free and quality (e.g. Graphic converter) bundled software and when you launch Quicktime, you are presented with "Buy now for fullscreen"!
I can't calculate how much "karma" I lost at Slashdot, Mac forums trying to explain why that is a sick thing to do. I bet lots of others did. We should feel like "heroes" :)
I can't imagine how many people put their computer to risk by trying to "crack" Quicktime just for full screen. We are lucky that no idiot could code a trojan for that. - rschluss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2uhm... allowing Googletalk users to chat within iChat isnt a new feature...
iChat for Googletalk has been possible for over a year now... - MacintoshSauce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I e-mailed Steve Jobs and asked for FLAC and OGG support in iTunes - at least being able to play and edit these files on my Mac Pro. For my iPod I have made AAC files from my FLAC files. I used Toast 8 Titanium to make the FLAC files from my CDs, and then also to convert them to AAC files. They sound great!
- evilspoons, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It's called Quicktime Pro and it's $30... and it's still a rip-off. VLC or Media Player Classic or MPlayer will all do whatever Quicktime Pro can do and a hell of a lot more for the big price of $0.00.
- ours, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes, it's called "QuickTime Alternative". Download it, use whatever media player you like to view QT in full-screen glory. Plus I'll let you download those damn web page embedded movie trailers with great ease.
- colto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2To mess with your mind
- ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No, wait 6 years like us :)
- ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Perhaps they speak about Voice features. Google Talk is a Jabber (XMPP) standard server with added voice features. I hope they speak about voice.
- sych0, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Same with "quicklook." Bout time osx caught up with ***** windows 98 :(
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Not quite. Quicktime Pro is more for content creation than just viewing media.
- SVPirate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd put even money on it being fully implemented by October, regardless of what Apple devs have said (by the sounds of it half of them have no idea anyway!). I think they are still unsure if it's going to meet the deadline, so they included 'read only' code in 10.5 Beta to prevent anyone from making a mess of their Mac's storage due to any bugs.
- wintermute1974, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1These are just rumours. Ignore them until the actual OS is released.
- cptaintylor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Progress, progress. OSX is finally getting to the point where MacOS 7-9 got. Over the "new" and into the meat. "Drawers" are back, if in the dock. The UI is looking more and more like MacOS 9.
If only they could split up the folder windows into two types. One with the traditional Icon and List views that preserves the one window to one folder rule; and the other with the column and other fancy views that don't conform to the 1 to 1 rules anyway. They need to be clearly different. - MacintoshSauce, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1If Apple doesn't make a tabbed Finder, someone will find a way to make a program to add that feature.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Honestly, I don't like tabs in OS X because it take the fun out of watching all your windows expand with Expose. I also find it easier to pick out a window in Expose than on a tab. But still, that sounds like a kickass feature.
- tony.pitale, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6Nothing really new here...move along, nothing to see.
- splattnik, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I believe theres better applications that handles fullscreen and other functions better than QT as mgajda says; mplayer have had this option for as long as i can remember. But i dont really know what im going to do with an filesystem that i cant write to? Great to hear that they are implementing zfs (the only reason for me to buy the release in october) but still if you cant use it propperly its not such a big deal.
- 42Vindictive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0ITS NOT ABOUT THE DAMN IPHONE! I DONT EVEN LIKE APPLE, +DIGG!!!
- zeiben, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Sing it, sister
- mgajda, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Hope to Qt toolkit improvements, full screen Qt is just a catch-up mplayer has it for _ages_! :-)
- CCB0x45, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5VLC FTW!
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Want free QT Pro?
1. Go to your local Apple Store
2. Go to a Mac
3. Go to System Preferences
4. Go to the QT Pane
5. Email yourself, or write down the registration info - colto, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2That's better than blowing something else.....wait no...no it's not
- elvenseven, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4Any fanboy would shell out $499 for the iFullScreen
- mgajda, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Thought they meant Qt toolkit improvements :-), full screen Qt is just a catch-up. (Linux' MPlayer has it for _ages_!) :-)
