- ChrisXPPro, on 07/17/2008, -15/+84People Actually Bought Acers?!?!
- colincornaby, on 07/16/2008, -17/+46Well, it's good that Apple is now 3rd, but the only people left to pass are the giants of the Windows world (HP at 31.9%, and Dell at 25.%). I'd love to see Apple pass those guys, but it's going to be a while until we see a story like this again. :)
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -5/+34Aw shucks, I'm typing this on an acer and it ain't so bad.
- pintomp3, on 07/17/2008, -4/+29so the mac vs pc ads are really about some schizophrenic dude?
- richman241, on 07/17/2008, -0/+24Of course an apple can be considered a PC...PC stands for a personal computer, not a windows computer.
- davidwasman, on 07/17/2008, -5/+23You're both idiots AND wrong.
Fact 1: Microsoft has an exclusive deal with Digg to advertise...NOT Apple.
Fact 2: Have you not seen the ridiculously insane amount of anti-Apple spam and negative comments being dugg up in every Apple article by all the brats who think everyone who owns an Apple MUST be a fanboi?
Fact 3: MS has Fanbois, too.
Stop with this petty ***** and childish rhetoric.
THEY'RE COMPUTERS. Get over it. - Spanq, on 07/17/2008, -2/+19Acer isn't any different than all the other "branded" PC's out there, but they do make some damn good displays that are very affordable. $350 for a 24" HDMI monitor that doesn't have backlight bleed all over the ***** place like a Samsung? Boner.
- LilBoyLuver, on 07/17/2008, -7/+23I like that all of the Apple Fanboys think this is a personal accomplishment.
- Arcotik, on 07/17/2008, -11/+26[Random Digg conspiracy here.]
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -22/+35BULL CRAP
Apple insider BS - right up there with Huffington post!
REAL story - Apple beat Acer in 1 quarter of sales - that is all.
That does not make them the 3rd largest vendor of the USA market!
Acer has been kicking Apple's asses for the last (lost count of how many quarters)
And Apple CONTINUOUSLY plays games with their marketing on what "units" means in their graphs. - tymaishu, on 07/17/2008, -4/+16Acer bought Gateway, making it number three. It used to be like number 5.
- DeFex, on 07/17/2008, -6/+18Do you apple fans want apple to be number one?
like a mcdognads hamburger
like (whatever crap is the top selling band right now)
like a creative labs soundcard.
like wonderbread.
like walmart.
I thought you would prefer a good product to a number one selling one. or can you show me an example of a best selling product that is also the best product. - punkcat, on 07/17/2008, -0/+10wait a bit, fs there were only 2 before you said that.
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -2/+11Who are all these people buying HP?
- WiseWeasel, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8People who buy their computer from Circuit City or Best Buy...
- KaJuN4, on 07/17/2008, -2/+10My Acer laptop has been going strong for 2 and a half years. It's been the most trouble-free computer I've ever had.
- Seph7, on 07/17/2008, -4/+12One day you will realize that having neon lights inside your pc case and being able to run crysis on max settings isn't actually what the majority of people want to do with their computers... When you realize this you will understand
- charlesray, on 07/17/2008, -4/+11...and not going much higher after that.
- 1shawn, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7So? If you don't like Apple articles just filter them out.
- septicmadman, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7HP laptops are pretty cheap...
- WiseWeasel, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5Rate of diggs is also a factor for the front page algorithm. If those 100 diggs came in just a few hours (~3 hours in this case), then it's expected that it would hit the front page.
- hillkiwi, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5You're right, but when Apple slips back into 4th next quarter I somehow doubt we'll be reading about it on the front page.
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/07/16/appl ... - monano, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6The eeePC is made by Asus, not Acer.
- Willravel, on 07/17/2008, -10/+15Apple has an 8.5% market share. Acer has 8.1%. No games, just maths.
- Bonobo, on 07/17/2008, -2/+6I came to the comments for this story just to look for a comment like this, and its the second one down. You know what PC stands for, and no one reads your blog.
- patm1987, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4I bought an HP because at the time it was the only way to get a notebook in the $1000 range with an nVidia card (I need to do ps3.0 programming and I'm in college so no Intel Integrated for me). It may be surprising but until recently my notebook seemed to be the most common on campus, only now am I starting to see more dell xps's and Macbook Pro's (maybe everyone else in my major realized that they'd need a graphics card?).
- colincornaby, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5I don't care what place they're in, as long as Macs keep on working. Why should I care what's in and what's popular? I buy a Mac because it's a tool, and it works best. TI Calculators are popular, and I love my TI-89. Should I ditch it because it's made by the #1 vendor?
- mal1964, on 07/17/2008, -2/+63rd in US sales, But apple isn't even on the radar to catch dell and hp in world sales.
- deathlyhallows, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5Well, Acer recently just bought Gateway... The rest of them are probably included in the "Others" category.
- neil1492, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5HP and Compaq are the same company. Gateway was bought by Acer like deathlyhallows mentioned. I can't say I have ever seen anyone with a Sony computer.
- jasmus, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5Acer, not Asus.
Actually, don't know if it's true anymore but I'm pretty sure ASUS used to manufacture Apple's hardware for them in their plants. - zephc, on 07/17/2008, -2/+6Compaq was bought by HP ages ago.
- lolmax, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4weed
- Xionic, on 07/17/2008, -17/+21Digg is becoming such bs :/
- xwfilm, on 07/17/2008, -2/+6Your comment sucks.
- hillkiwi, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4I never thought I'd sign up at reddit due to their comment system, but I'm pretty sure it's time.
- jasmus, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4Inaccurate. Consolidated Paperweight of Tokyo have been on top for years.
- charlesray, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Regardless of your opinion of their products, Apple's growth is limited by the fact that only they develop and sell the hardware for their platform, which is ironic in that many would say their strict control over hardware is why they are so successful. Apple is hauling in bags of cash and spurning innovation among their competitors; it would be insane for them to try to massively expand their operations any further.
- chillypacman, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3@ kraetos
I hope you forgot your /sarcasm tag because that sounds almost as crazy as a far right winger criticizing LGF of being far left wing. - Wrangler76, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Reliability surveys actually show that Acer isn't even any worse than HP or Dell. It makes sense since they just get their parts from mostly the same manufacturers that the other companies use. The only computer part that actually fails for me (every 3-5 years) is the hard drive, and my recent Acers have used Seagates just like many other brands, so I think the Acer unreliability myth is pretty unjustified these days.
- chillypacman, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3everytime you add rationately and effectively diffuse a pro-Apple story steve jobs kills 4 puppies and drinks the blood of 2 kittens.
- palewook, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3acer's sales must have fallen. b/c apple's market hasn't increased.
- WiseWeasel, on 07/17/2008, -3/+5iPod...
/ducks
With monopoly comes complacency, and you're right that Apple will make better products if they're the underdog than if they get any kind of domination. iPod has mostly stagnated, except for the influx of life from the iPhone to the iTouch, which was a result of being a complete underdog in the cell phone market. I couldn't agree more that Apple in a monopoly position would be an ugly, ugly thing. I think most Mac users, at least those who have used them long enough to know what it feels like to lack appreciable 3rd party support, are just happy to hit that 8-10% mark, just so they can feel secure that developers and service providers will cater to them. I doubt many of them would actually want Apple to replace Microsoft, as that would certainly lead to a whole lot of suckage and lameage coming out of Cupertino (like even more than their already antisocial tendencies with control over the iPod, iPhone and AppleTV platforms). - iminaufo, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2... http://digg.com/settings/topics
- dOOBiEx213, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3I agree Apple has released some pretty innovative products. With that said, I frown upon their marketing schemes, and obvious over-pricing. They KNOW people will buy their *****, regardless of how much it costs. It angers me when they hold back on certain features, not because it would add to the production cost, but because they'll simply release a "better one" next year, and force people to re-buy the same *****.
- BlueStarr, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2You run XP/Vista. STFU. Little pimple. have fun with that pile of crap!
- WiseWeasel, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3That's because you suck at maths. 100% of 1/10th is less than 30% of 9/10ths.
- sharkoman, on 07/17/2008, -6/+8I woulda thought they were number one retailer/seller of computers. Everyone and their ***** grandma has an Apple around here (west L.A.)
- r3zonance, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Mostly corporate. It's a trusted PC brand.
- expert01, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I have no idea what's going on; Gartner and IDC both contradict NPD. Gartner seems to count total sales for the year as of the end of the quarter. I see no other way HP could have 13 million units shipped during Q2 when NPD says that they did around 6 million Q1.
I wish they had included a chart from IDC for global sales. Can't wait for NPD since I was able to find their previous charts.
