- zwei, on 10/10/2007, -19/+110It's always crazy to think how big Apple really is now ...for so long we have simply been categorizing them by their PC marketshare. With the iPod (and now the iPhone) they have become a force to be reckoned with.
Also note that they recently passed HP up as well. - corporalclegg24, on 10/10/2007, -51/+124Get a mac. It's great.
- DevastatorIIC, on 10/10/2007, -36/+96The exclusive maker of a unique kind of computer and media devices is larger than one PC manufacturer? Woo, I'm so surprised.
That being said; where is it all? At my university, all I see is a sea of Dells. - kelly, on 10/10/2007, -16/+71zwel, don't forget their computer share is growing rapidly as well... growing faster than the PC industry's growth rate actually.
- guardianzero, on 10/10/2007, -19/+73Good looking stuff sells well :-.
If an apple product has an inner flaw it is overlooked because of the design and usability by the consumer.
Look at the iphone: It's got some issues, but it's not stopping people from picking that up instead of a $75 blackjack. - kethraal, on 10/10/2007, -22/+65"why the hell are you comparing apple to dell? shouldn't it be Apple and Microsoft?"
You mean why are we comparing one hardware manufacturer to another hardware manufacturer? You think we should be comparing a hardware manufacturer to a software-only company? Oh. Ok. We'll get right on that. - PiGuy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+44I have a feeling they both sleep fine.
- postaboy, on 10/10/2007, -10/+45Ha! Ha! My favorite corporation is worth more than your favorite corporation.
- canadaboy, on 10/10/2007, -22/+53Nobody loves posting crow more that a bitter Mac fan waiting 10 years for one good retort.
- HeatVision, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31Dell's 4th quarter revenue (ended Feb'07):$14.4 billion, profit: $673 million US
Apple's 2nd quarter revenue (ended Mar'07): $5.26 billion, profit $770 million US
It's interesting that although Dell is nearly triple in sales, they're not as profitable as Apple. I guess that explains the market cap of Apple. - lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -16/+41[citation needed]
- cfulp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28In the past 3 months, they've sold 1,327,000 macs. While the iPod may be blowing those numbers out of the water, they wouldn't be anywhere close to going out of buisness.
- consonance, on 10/10/2007, -13/+36Get whatever you prefer. It's great.
- zigziggityzoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23In 1990 Apple's stock was worth over $10 per share. The last time it was close to $1 per share was in 1985, and that was $1.84.

PC Growth, overall 3%, Apple growth 30%
http://blogs.zdnet.com/ITFacts/?p=12713
PC Shipments:
1. HP
2. Dell
3. Apple/Gateway tie
The 30% is not market share, but growth. So while less impressive than it could be, it is telling. This is of course before Leopard and the new Mac line that will go with it.
It looks like Apple could quickly be a household name in considerations for purchasing a new PC. - jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23it isn't overvalued. It just has a high P/E ration due to it's much higher growth. Although it is interesting to see that it's P/E ration is almost exctly double that of Dell's meaning that both companies make the same amount of profit.
You are wrong on the iPod account as 60% of the companies revenues still come from Macs. Don't forget although they sell more iPods, they are a lot cheaper.
source: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2003806202_appleearn26.html
"Established products were the moneymakers. The company said it shipped a record 1.76 million Macs, up 33 percent from the year-ago period, accounting for $2.5 billion, or more than 60 percent of the quarter's revenues.
Unit sales of iPods grew 21 percent from last year to 9.8 million and generated $1.57 billion in revenue." - schmons, on 10/10/2007, -9/+27Well at my university all I see are Macs... but my school is located in San Francisco and has a big emphasis on art.
- GarrettAtreides, on 10/10/2007, -14/+32Its not hard to have a higher rate of growth when your computers account for less than 10 percent of the total computer market. There are over over a billion PCs out there and in order to grow 30 percent that would be really hard... as opposed to Apple which just needs to sell a few computers to see a large growth. Hell, if I decided to start manufacturing PCs and sell one this year... and then 2 next year that's 100% growth! AMAZING!
- redrock34, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21I REJECT YOUR REALITY AND SUBSTITUTE MY OWN
- AceTracer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20For 20 years people have said Apple will be dead any day, now they're saying Apple -would- be dead if not for the iPod. And yet, Apple is selling more computers now than they ever have, so even if they stopped selling iPods tomorrow they'd still be the #3 computer manufacturer.
- cfulp, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22zybch hates apple. As evident by his insisting to post negative (and on occasion, completely unrelated) comments in every single apples post. He's in your internet's, deciding what's better for you!
- Quix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20"Its ALL about the ipod. Without that, apple would probably be dead by now."
Without Office, Microsoft would probably be dead by now. What's your point exactly, zybch? Oh, you don't have one. Just trolling as usual I see.
Lamer. - undersky, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19no one is comparing.
michael dell said apple was dead and steve job should sell the company and close it down.
now apple is worth twice as much as dell.
it's ironically newsworthy - mentor972, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17That's a great joke. I was laughing for 10 minutes
- rockforever, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15This isn't a comparison of companies in a normal respect. It is a comparison of companies simply because Michael Dell was a smart ass and said that Apple should just jump ship. Jobs snapped back. This is the 10 year later in response to Dell's remarks. Its not just market sectors and product specialization.
- nath0590, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Oh, so you are saying that without a product a company would have no value? duh. It's called basic economics.
- oyourmom, on 10/10/2007, -13/+27In 1990 my uncle bought 100,000 shares of Apple stock for $1.00 a share, then sold it a few days later for $1.50. He thought he made so much money...
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I also don't see Dell as Apple's enemy that they need to "beat". They cater to two completely different customers. Dell is a mass market bargain retailer, Apple is a specialty provider.
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17I'm not sure you understand. Michael Dell said back in like 1997 that Apple should just close the company and pay out what is left to the shareholders. Hence the Apple to Dell comparisons.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13You have to remember that their 30% is just a tiny fraction of HP's single digit percentage growth.
- jacobj, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19Stating that Dell and Apple are not in the same market completely misses the point. Michael Dell was stating that it was not possible to build a viable business from the base that Steve Jobs was starting from. Market Capitalization, projected growth and cash reserves are 3 key indicators as to the long term viability of an organization and Apple out does Dell by quite some margin. We are comparing 2 leading business men and Dell obviously does not have the vision or capability of Steve Jobs.
- zang74, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Care to do some research before making that statement? Apple has had steady growth since Jobs' return. That's 10 years now that Apple's sales have been growing. The last year with Intel is just following an already existent trend. This is not because you can run Windows on a Mac now; it's from word of mouth, effective marketing and a good business strategy.
- BrainInAJar, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17apple sells computers. dell sells computers.
microsoft sells software. apple only really uses software as a reason to buy their computers - estvir, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15I'm sorry you're retarded.
- Furioshonen, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18Has everyone forgot iTunes? the real reason Apple is bigger than Dell is not only because of its computer, and phone sales but because they are the 3rd largest distributer of Music in the United States. Dell can't compete with that.
- lsatkins, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Or it means that macs are way overpriced and they make more per box sold because dell doesn't mark up their systems as high. Remember Dell actually has competitors in the PC market...Apple doesn't.
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -11/+21A lot of it is in creative industries; graphic design and video editing for example. Many schools also have Macs. My college has iMacs in all the art department computer labs. Overall the school probably has several hundred. And then home users.
- LeeSoong, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16More than 1.7 Million people disagreed with your theory last quarter...
Apple keeps going up,
Vista shills keep going down,
it's about quality and service and margin - Apple outdoes most.
Dell isn't bad, but they have slid behind HP and if they don't work harder and smarter they will fall behind ACER and Gateway too... - Cable, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11they aren't comparing the value of a single share, they are comparing the market cap. The market cap is the value of ALL their shares.
- cthellis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10"I wish people would remember that Michael Dell wasn't even AT Dell for the past several years. Good job patting eachother on the back for 'beating' a guy whose company fell down after he left it...kind of like another company I think were all familiar with."
Michael Dell stepped down voluntarily in early 2004, and return in 2007, in-between which he remained Chairman of the Board and retained pretty much all his same influence over the company--just not the same title. (And in the meanwhile, it's not like Dell was doing much other than "business as usual") Jobs was ousted forcefully, sold off all but one of his stock, went and founded another company (and got involved with others), and had zero influence inside Apple for over 11 years.
This is not quite the same thing. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9All this arguing about who's company is bigger seems pointless. Is Apple making more money now? Yep. Wonderful. Is it because of iPods, iPhones, Intel in Macs, better Windows compatibility? Yep, all of those. Apple has made a lot of smart moves over the last ten years and they're reaping those benefits. As a Mac user do I care if they're as big as HP or Dell? Not at all.
As long as Apple supplies me with the platform I prefer I'm good to go. The rest is just icing on the cake. - hayden.evans, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11on a dell? are you serious?
- caretrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9hi iMovie isn't meant for "pro" video editing
perhaps your friend should look into final cut pro
or maybe you should stop faking chatlogs. - chingy1788, on 10/10/2007, -35/+44Dell deals mainly in PCs
Apple now deals mainly in portable stuff (these days anyways, iPod, iPhone)
comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges
Coca-cola is probably worth more than both, why ain't there any fuss about that? - RunLikeTheWind, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10For every computer Apple sells, they sell an OS as well, so doesn't that make them every bit as much of a software company as they are a computer company? It's just as apt to compare them to Dell as Microsoft, but not apples to apples either way.
- cfulp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Market Value (as of July 27, 2007):
Apple: $124,422,769,800.00
Dell: $63.196.528.641.40
Even if apples stock fell to what it was 6 months ago, it would still be whooping dells. And yes, Microsoft's market share is significantly higher ($281,169,443,800.80). Who cares? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Steve was just playing on fanboy emotions after several years of apple teetering on the brink of death.
- undersky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9i dont think the author was comparing, it's michael dell first called out apple's doom, so of course it is ironic (and newsworthy) to point out when michael dell's company worths less than half of the company that he used to ask to close down.
- undersky, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13Oh yeah? how about GE? value at $399B!! Exxon? $482B!!! Take that!
- gropo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Yeah.. all you see is a "sea" of Dell MP3 players....
