I hate the way this topic has been raped by fanboys.
No, this it not 10.5
No, OS X isn't perfect
No, Apple won't charge for this update
No, it isn't huge news but it's news all the same and therefore worth posting.
Now PLEASE stop with the immature bickering. - sngx1275, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Yes, its free. They won't charge for any updates to 10.4
- TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30You act like pleasing customers in a timely manner is common -- let's look at Microsoft for a second. When they produce something timely (Windows ME), it's certainly not pleasing.. and when they produce something pleasing (Windows Vista) it's certainly not timely. Apple having a long-standing tradition of testing their software and producing it quickly is the breath of fresh air that vocal mac-switchers keep raving about.
...and then get slapped with a fanboy label. - pevensen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25If you have 10.4.x already, won't it be a free upgrade?
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23"Not really... We could get 10.4.10"
Oh crap, not that argument again. - jonshipman, on 10/12/2007, -11/+27Not really... We could get 10.4.10
- eyreka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16why do you read them?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Out of the 17 bugs release so far, only 2 are non-Apple applications. Your mention of VLC is pointless since it's obvious they can't fix that bug but they can take responsibility with the others.
- RomulusX86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Microsoft Updates = Fixes
Apple Updates = Fixes/Features
... - kikuchiyo11, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15How do they fix an error in VLC, a program they don't make (and that the video lan people already fixed)?
- PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's just like how someone can be "almost pregnant". :P
- aspec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'm still kinda confused as to how anything can be "sometimes a telltale sign."
- macslut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8History of final OS X versions:
10.0.6
10.1.7
10.2.8
10.3.9
10.4.10 seems likely to happen - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Although 10.1 was given as a free upgrade to people that had 10.0, because Apple didn't think 10.0 was good enough (and was probably right).
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Heh, I'm running 10.4.9 right now, theres VERY slight UI change, all i could find is a little toned down brushed medal and the airport sign is blue now, not orange.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3DAMMIT MORTIMER!! BUY BUY!!!
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4zybch,
Your ability to not read Apple related posts is much higher than my ability to not use Windows at work so STFU. - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Out of the 17 bugs release so far, only 2 are non-Apple applications. Your mention of VLC is pointless since it's obvious they can't fix that bug but they can take responsibility with the others."
I count 3 from completely off the top of my head. Application Enchancer, OmniWeb, and VLC. I'm willing to bet more of them are 3rd party. - esquilax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it's not a matter of "is it real," it's a matter of "is this Apple's fault?" and bugs with VLC (that even exist on other platforms) are not.
- ferndave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you guys whine about Mac stories on Digg based on marketshare, you must really get pissed about the Ubuntu posts.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I'm glad they've stepped it up a bit, or it's not gonna be out before 10.5!
- MrMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Waaaaaa, an apple story on digg. Cry me a river.
@ zybch: your referencing old data which was based on a incorrect premise (that all computers have the same lifespan, when in fact mac users tend to use their computers for an average of 1 1/2 years after a windows purchaser who bought at the same time). Read the recent news.. like how apple's growth is like 31% while PC in general growth is 3% ?
Yeah... - tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Now if it could only move its down stock back up, the I'd be happy.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I forgot. I blocked flag months ago...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Again, 2 bugs out of 17 are non-Apple, the rest are completely in their ballpark to fix. They even clearly stated they'll cover non Apple OS X applications. I think most Mac users are just afraid to admit that security is an issue in all pieces of software and OS X is just a gold mine waiting to be dugg up as proven by MOAB.
- adstretch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the problem with M$ service packs is many of the "features" (like the security dialogs and new firewall in XP SP2) are really not feature, but are just fancy new plugs for the same old holes. Granted OSX has its own security wholes to fill, but they get addressed so quickly that proof of concept code is barely available when the hole is plugged. Also as with its *nix counterparts to do any real serious damage the user of OS X needs to put in their password, otherwise hardly anything malicious can be run (just make sure you keep java runtime patched, now thats a ship almost as leaky as XP)
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4virtualball,
Here's a wild idea for you to try on for size: how about actually complying with the NDA you agreed to?
Of course, that's assuming that you have a seed key. If not, then you're admitting to a crime.
-jcr - ronfez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hope this fixes the ability to connect to the Sony GPS-CS1.
- VSack, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5@sacr3dc0w
Don't forget that the VLC thing was the one that the mac community jumped all over as proof positive that this was a sham.
Its pointless arguing with the fan community on this matter. They are much louder in their much smaller numbers. - aspec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@PDelahanty
That sounds like personal experience talking - carebearwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2/still waiting for Apple to fix my iSub for my Intel Macs...
/waiting since 10.4.4 - wesleyhargrove, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6well said.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Microsoft does occasionally add features in service packs. I believe USB 2.0 support was added in a SP.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2>Microsoft does occasionally add features in service packs. I believe USB 2.0 support was added in a SP.
Keyword: Occasionally. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5@VSack:
A shame, because some of the bugs are serious and should be taken so, not shrugged aside as if it's a sham.

If none of you believe it's real, test the exploits and see for yourself. OS X isn't perfect, as much as I love it. - robertosucco15, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1won't make the apple share on trendio rise... http://www.trendio.com/word.php?wordid=1371&language=en
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4@undersky
How many times are we going to hear that joke on digg before it finally becomes funny?
And to pre-emt an arguement - 10.4.10 is possible as OS X version numbers are not in decimal. - demesisx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2agreed
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3eyreka, we don't get much choice. As flag says, 5% (its actually less than 2% worldwide) making 19% of the noise.
I use an RSS widget for the top digg stories, and its generally the case that out of the 20 stories, at least 5 of them are apple! 1/4? Thats just so way out of proportion of actual mac owners its not funny!
All I can think of is that they feel the need to get as many other people 'converted' as possible, and instead of doing it with a little restraint they act like the damn evangelical christians and end up pissing off most of their target audience. - griz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1That must mean Apple is continuously "screwing" everyone into into thinking their next product is always immanent.
- ScottBookG4, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8Lame. Who cares. Apple is another company that is always working out bugs, just like Microsoft is still doing with Vista. Does this mean 10.4.9 will be awesome? Of course not.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1@flag564:
That's a good analogy.
Mac Fanboys: The Jehovah's Witnesses of the Computing World - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4"every mac fanboy post i read makes me hate them just a lil more"
They bring it on themselves. Their foolishness turns people off like you wouldn't believe.
5% of computer users making 100% of the noise. - cepher, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Can't wait. But don't we already know that an update is near? I coulda swore it was mentioned at WWDC06
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6Stick in the Apple section and it is.
Makes you wonder if the fankids are actually surprised by this. - monergism, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6So, a company wants to produce a product that pleases it's customers in a timely manner?
This is news? - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0You only have to pay for an update when the 4 in 10.4 changes to a 5. I wonder how many decades it will take Apple to get to OS XI ????
- WarezAppz, on 10/12/2007, -19/+6Anything the 'hive' does is news . . . . /sarcasm
Don't dally too long, you may get brainwashed yourself . . . . /more sarcasm
Actually - I don't hate Apple - I just hate it's cult! /non-fiction - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2premonitory signs of new OS X :) *Sings*
