- LukeBeaumont, on 02/25/2009, -5/+75I bet you are one of those pretentious ***** who only listens to indie bands because no one else has heard of them, and refuse to listen to any bands on the radio.
You should be happy that the genuinely good indie bands get a larger fanbase. - virtualball, on 02/25/2009, -2/+33I bet you listen to bands that haven't even formed yet, too, right?
Grow up, I love indie music, but if someone else likes them, good for them. - xGrill, on 02/25/2009, -1/+26This is awesome, now some bands can start cutting out the middle man (cough the record companies cough)
- videodroner, on 02/25/2009, -1/+23@gary... Do you even like the bands? Or do you just like the "status" that it gives you because no one else has heard of them?
Your mentality is worse than the people who only listen to things that are popular. - videodroner, on 02/25/2009, -0/+20Took the words right out of my mouth.
- RobotKeaton, on 02/25/2009, -3/+22Now hipsters can listen on their macbooks and look supercool. I hope you get a free scarf and some fashion specs when you sign up.
- vocalyouth, on 02/25/2009, -3/+20eMusic is still way better for indie music.
- nephari, on 02/25/2009, -2/+17FINALLY -- Amazon and iTunes can fight over my business. It's about freaking time.
- acoustix, on 02/25/2009, -1/+15I always thought the term "Indie" referred to the fact that they're "independent", not... "Sounds like Jack Johnson, Neutral Milk Hotel, Modest Mouse, Postal Service...". You're an idiot.
- se1zure, on 02/25/2009, -0/+14Your right. relatively unknown bands who produce great music should never become successful or expand their fanbase so shallow hypocrites like yourself can remain as pretentious pricks who "liked the band before they sold out".
- immatellyouwhat, on 02/25/2009, -0/+10You are the only one who wants it that's why.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+9Don't they have that "Indie Spotlight" page every now and then?
- Bilbobaggins, on 02/25/2009, -2/+11Your definition of "true" indie music has been dead since the creation of internet piracy.
- thebrokenlight, on 02/25/2009, -0/+8How insightful.
- Cattywampus, on 02/25/2009, -1/+8You're kidding, right? You want to keep your favorite bands to yourself and not have anyone else find out about them, so that they can survive only at a subsistence level and barely scrape by at trying a living through their music? Or have to keep crappy day jobs and squeeze in doing music in their spare time?
I'm assuming this person is being facetious.
Plus, with the Internet, blogs, etc. even the most obscure band can get huge exposure in a short amount of time. If a band is good (or can make people *think* they're good), people are bound to "discover" then and put the word out. - IamNomad, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7In Russia Itunes store wants you.
- IamNomad, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7get free ridiculously skinny jeans every 10 albums .
- MightyUpsetter, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6They are like make more money by using itunes, simply by the volume of scale.
Why do something badly yourself for a small audience when apple will take care of the distribution and help you reach a huge audience. - BoboTheHobo, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7Indie trolls are cool.
- BlueCapsule, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7Right, Apple is a terrible company for promoting little known artists. Grow up.
- MrQuoz, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6 The internet should be the best chance for musicians to get heard. I'd be much more willing to buy from an indie band.
- srdrums, on 02/25/2009, -1/+6Indie bands should sell their music themselves (ie something like MySongStore), and keep as much revenue as possible.
- zonk3r, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5Agreed, however many artists have neither the technical skills or time to do so. So for some this is good news and it provides far more eyeballs than other services like eMusic.
- mason092, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4Yeah! Indie! WTF? I won't be able to talk with my friends about ***** bands that everyone knows if I listen to indie stuff!
- fsufanizzle, on 02/25/2009, -1/+5Hopefully people will expand their musical horizons....
- bigbangbuddha, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4I'd say just the opposite. The biggest problem (and advantage) with indie bands is they don't have the support of the big labels so its hard for them to get the spotlight, and so many of them deserve it. Tools like this can only help them take control of their own music. The web and digital distribution is driving the old labels nuts because they can't control it, but its rocking for the small guys; they can do it themselves and be more prolific. Its just nice to see a big company like apple recognize it.
- MtheoryX, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4What, now you gotta problem with scarves, too?
- bigbangbuddha, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3I do. I have my own indie label and several published works. iTunes is a critical resource in distribution, along with sites like CD Baby. All I'm saying is that having iTunes help promote indie bands is a huge step forward for groups like us.
- Laughto, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3Music is music, but some music gets radio play and advertising campaigns and makes millions, and the rest has to settle with a myspace page. Not bad of Apple to give the little guy coverage this big.
- btronclassix, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3A genre describes the form/style of music. Indie describes their record labels.
I'm saying that the two aren't the same thing. - Twenty, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3wooooossshhhh
- MightyUpsetter, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3It refers to the fact that they are not signed to one of the Major Labels, nothing at all to do with how popular they are.
- misterparry, on 02/25/2009, -1/+4If it doesn't have Peaches then it isn't indie
- austinlight, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2not always true. but i understand what you are saying. if you know anything about local music across america you would know this is true.
- celotil, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2As I said above, I think it's one of the ads. When I went to the site with ad block off I got bounced around a bit and told to install some dodgy AV software.
- clharlem149, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2...but it is indie.
- Zippo, on 02/26/2009, -0/+2***** the RIAA!
- prefixmag, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2"The indie spotlight feature is a weekly feature that was going for a few years highlighting different genres each week. This is a proper indie spotlight store non genre specific with it's own page. Brand new and launched yesterday!"
- digitalpencil, on 02/26/2009, -0/+2God, i hate these pricks! They waffle on about these obscure bands that they think are great one week and the next, after they've received some more mainstream exposure (thanks in part to their incessant waffling), they're no longer cool because they've become (*cue whiny voice) 'commercial'.
How can a band you loved last week because no-one had heard of them, suddenly become lame because people have? The music hasn't changed in anyway whatsoever, the only switch, is your opinion of yourself..
Is that not the atypical example of musical pretension? - celotil, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2It's one of the ads. I first read the article, then the comments here, with Ad Block enabled.
When I reached your comment I turned Ad Block off, went back to the site, and waited for the page to finish loading. As soon as it did, a new browser window popped up loading some other site, and a JS pop-up appeared telling me I had signs of a virus infection and I needed to install some scanner.
Given that either the cancel or ok buttons could be programmed to do whatever (this being a JS pop-up), I simply force quit Safari, reloaded it, and came back here to let you guys know. - odetonarwhal, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2noooooo apple is like soo mainstream : (
- MtheoryX, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2There's nothing saying they can't do both, but there's certainly something to be said for the exposure an artist gets with iTunes...
...especially if the "Genius" algorithm factors in Indie music...think about it ;P - supermanKD, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2Anybody else getting that Attack site notification? I am using Firefox on OS X 10.5.6
- feliks2, on 02/25/2009, -1/+3There are pretty much two definitions of indie and I think both are acceptable, provided there is some context when the term is used. Either the bands are independant, or they sound like Neutral Milk Hotel, Animal Collective, etc. Neither one of them is going away.
Oh, and by the way I don't see how something like Modest Mouse can be classified as "indie" by any definition of the word. - JunkyVomit, on 02/25/2009, -1/+3I bet you get a discount if you use Starbucks WiFi to buy the music.
- videodroner, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2^^ You really can't defend garywillson when he's one of those "hipster" kids that only goes a concert to be seen. It makes him so cool to be at a show of a band that no one knows.
- Twenty, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2Peaches is great. My friend and I listened to all of Teaches last night.
- Laughto, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1What is with everyone saying "quietly" these days in reporting feature/service launches? What would constitute a 'vocal' launch of an indie section of the apple store? I think people just like saying the word. 'Quietly'.
- Burrito, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1Oh, well if you haven't heard of it, then it must not be any good. Please disregard my attempt to help people find indie music for free rather than paying for it through iTunes. I apologize.
- kevine, on 02/26/2009, -0/+1It does make sense for Indie to be a genre even though technically it is not. If you don't count Indie as a genre, then you have to either not distinguish music as Indie versus Label, or you need to add an entire hierarchical level with only two categories.
This way, ya, sure Indie isn't really a genre, but it tells me that this is music that is ok to buy if you like it as opposed to music that helps finance the RIAA. -
