- rafleming, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Yeah, Apple is clearly ignoring the problem. That's why they posted the support article identifying the possible issue on their support site. The support article offers a workaround and indicates that more information will be posted as they continue to research the problem.
Additioanally, this problem does not affect ALL hi-res powebooks. I have two new 15" powerbooks, and neither of them experience this.
This submission, and the lame-ass whiny website are both overhyped nonsense.
No digg. - kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I bought the 15" in Dec, happens to me all the time. Sux.
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I haven't had any problems with my Inspiron 6000 @ 1920x1200 ... am I missing something?"
Yes, you are missing something, namely that this is a problem with APPLE POWERBOOKS and not your DELL INSPIRON. - quietglow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL! Reminds me of the great monitor debacle in 2000. Like half of the 17" monitors in the lab I ran died within a year, and Apple refused to acknowledge any problem--zillions of other had the same issue.
You guys are all welcome to the ranks of Apple fans, but this is something you're gonna have to get used to. They do look nice, but think of them more as Mazaratis than BMWs. If you're gonna pony up the money to buy one, you'd best save some for keeping it running. - 9mmCensor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This isan issue Apple has officially acknowledged. See it here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302978
However, some the claims that these people are making are insane, and untrue. While the issue does suck, you have to be honest about it.
The website in question states that Apples solution is:
"you should do not multitasking"
That is not true. Apple says, "run only one audio application at a time." One audio program and one program are very different things.
The computer is not "completely useless" either, the audio is buggered yes, but thats far from "completely useless".
Also this issue seems to effect a small number of systems. The number of complains I have heard about this total one (1), and I deal with dozens of owners of these computers a day.
Also a single user of a 12" powerbook does not substantiate the claim that all 12" Powerbooks have the same issue. Nor do I belive that it can be proven (and from my experiance I do not see that most people have this issue with the 15 and 17 inche DL SD Powerbooks) that this issue effects "Every single PowerBook G4 Double-Layer SD (15" and 17") ever made" as I have talked with many users of these computers, and they do not have this issue.
I have no problems supporting legitimate consume issues, but I wont due so if they spout of factually incorrect information in an effort to further their claims. - mongrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe Apple should get into furniture design, because it's clear they can't nail down hardware. Short-lived iPod batteries, dead pixels on their uber-expensive monitors they won't acknowledge, SPROD, massive 20-pound G5 towers with barely enough room left for ONE optical drive... full of good ideas but but very little self-respect.
- eddieroger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"We're not gonna protest! We're not gonna protest!"
The article made me think of PCU, so that had to be posted.
Anyway, I'm sure Apple is working on a fix if they acknowledge it. It happened to me, and I got an iMic. Done. Plus, since it went in my hub, one less thing to plug in. I doubt Apple is ignoring it. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@PitPat
It has never been a majority of Apple products - the defects have normally been isolated to one revision of a product (including the iBook logicboard failures, the battery issues for iPods and laptops, etc.). The problems are normally fixed in the next revision. Bear in mind I'm not trying to apologize for Apple - the myriad of people that did happen to buy their Powerbooks this generation are probably SOL, and that sucks.
What people don't seem to realize is that big companies (and yes, despite their image, Apple is as much a corporation out to make a buck as anybody else) hate to do recalls or offer fixes. The only time a big company offers a fix or a recall is when the cost of the recall is LESS than the cost of a class action lawsuit that could be held against them. So, basically, if you want Apple to do a recall or offer a fix, your best bet is not a petition - it's to bound together and sue. That's how people got their iBooks' logicboards fixed and their iPod batteries replaced. - Kryptonitfusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure if this is meantioned b4 but it also occurs in the iBook G4!
- chaos86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because nobody else has made this point:
Apple is very secretive and internalizing with pretty much everything they do. They may be working on a firmware update right now (I hope), but they won't say a thing til it's ready. - PitPat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1apple products have had serious defects for a while now. Doesn't anyone remember the notorious iBook (2001ish era) video chip breakage crap? How about battery for the iBooks/ipods?
Anyhow, the most annoying thing is that Apple NEVER takes responsibility for any wrong doing (or poor design)... even if they do have to pay up (and that's a big IF), it's always under the guise of "we don't acknowledge this as a fault in manufacturing, but we're providing fixes anyway."
For a company that's so invested in its image, who doesn't Apple stand behind its products? - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm an Apple fanboy and I am digging this because it's a problem. M$ guys learn, I don't mark this as Lame because it's dissing my company.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple always does the right thing and fixes their broken stuff. They simply refuse to acknowledge it until they understand it and have a fix for it. Nothing to see here. Move along.
- e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2We still say Apple is ignoring the issue because their support doc actually asks Powerbook owners with this issue to: "only use one audio program at a time."
Well, I'm sorry but if I'm paying $2500, I'm damn sure going to run more than one program at a time on it. That's just a blatant doc to say "We don't want to get to the heart/spend the resources to solve the actual problem."
Simply unacceptable. - drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"HMM Apple lovers begging Digg for help at least Microsoft fixes thier problems"
Where did you get this delusion? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's how bad the G4's are. The new core duo solution should be much better.
- Jazzed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay, so it's a major problem for the people who have it, and Apple seems a bit slow on this, but that website is just ridiculous.
They blatantly state that it's a problem in ALL of these Powerbooks, when it's clearly only affecting a minority of users.
Statements like "the latest Powerbook is completely useless for tasks like making music or performing" don't hold, because anyone making music and performing, even at a hobbyist level, is probably going to be using external audio interfaces anyway for the low latency and quality that you can't get with the on-board. - drksun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woudnt this fix the issue?
http://www.turtlebeach.com/site/products/audioadv/micro/
yeah buy pay 2000+, then have to buy a soundcard for basic sound? - Graphixaddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh yea, and i have the just recently heard the sound loop problem on my powerbook....weee
- zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The biggest problem with Apple's portables is the lack of in the field testing. Because they are so secretive about their stuff the new products don't get wide testing in the field for fear of leaks about features etc... The users who purchase them are the guinea pigs and problems are fixed in subsequent revisions.
This is why it's generally not a good idea to buy a rev 1 new Apple design (iMac, PowerMac Gx, PowerBooks etc...). The MacBook Pros probably won't be any better. Yes, they share essentially the same case and I/O ports but the logic board and CPU are all new and so is the screen (iSight camera reduced the vert res.)
This happens all the time with Apple. It's par for the course. - Drywall420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This definantly seems like a terrible issue, although Apple's target market deal mostly with media so I'm sure they'll have a fix within a month or two. My curiousity is has anyone tried a PPC Linux distro to see if it still has the same problem?
- Foxphoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep i have the same prob 15" w/dual layer dvd
- MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I posted that mine was fine... But it just happened for the first time today! I'm encoding video, go on iChat, and one of the sound effects starts looping. No horrible volume increase, but just a loop of sound lasting for a few seconds. I've been meaning to contact Apple for a few days now about other things, now I have one more. Aww."
instant karma. I feel sorry for you. knock on some crazy wood next time. - Bojango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All the more to be happy about, I decided in July that I would wait and get one when they switch over to Intel, sux for you Kevin, sorry.
- XedMada, on 02/16/2009, -0/+0man, i thought that was a problem with World of Warfraft as ive only noticed it in game. I guess i just play WoW too much.
This is actually the Second big problem with the HD powerbooks. The 15" also have a horrible horizontal line issue on the displays. Still no resolution. Looks like its the model apple has forgotten. Just pushed out to get some sales before the MacIntels.
still the only laptop il work on tho. - 808kick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On board sound is by nature plauged with problems. The realtek one that is really popular is in my craptop and I have worse issues than this under XP.
I never trust onboard sound it steals from the cpu and simple playback brings my anthlon xp to it's knees. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"just dont buy apple stuff. you only THINK it looks cool because you are in lala land because its shiny. like jingling keys in front of a baby."
HA!
b-b-b-but we *like* shiny stuff :(
“My mollasses-slow notebook based on 3-year-old technology has audio glitches when I peg the CPU at 100% and it can't fill the sound DMA buffer!” Cry me a river."
reminds me of that episode of "The Simpsons" when Smither's mom says to the grocery bagger: "put all of my groceries in one bag... and I DON'T want it to be heavy."
sorry mac fools, but you just can't have your cake and eat it too. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I posted that mine was fine... But it just happened for the first time today! - ChuyMatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is not "my battery sucks after 2 years," this is "I bought my 2k+ laptop and yet it has awful and unpredictable sound problems" Trust me, it is very awful.
bbgribs can bite me, as I am having this problem. It sucks and is annoying, as it is damned expensive. - energyblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jesus.
That must suck. - staan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0“My mollasses-slow notebook based on 3-year-old technology has audio glitches when I peg the CPU at 100% and it can't fill the sound DMA buffer!” Cry me a river.
- bbianchi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0first. for the morons that say "never buy a 1st gen mac product." WTF are you talking about.. this is a POWERBOOK issue not a MacBook, they havent even started shipping yet.
I have this issue and when i check my console log it says the audio buffer is over flowing. - crashingechelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I dugg this story since I have a PowerBook. But I bought mine in November and have done video editing on it and workin in garage band and I use iTunes often. I have never had this problem happen to me. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
- fungke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just brought a new 15" Powerbook and it didn't exhibit the same audio issues as described here, which is lucky. However, there is another problem which also needs addressing and that's the flickering display flaw. I received my PB on Monday, it's being returned today and exchanged for a another new unit and hopefully one that's trouble free.
Apple do need to get better quality control in place. - staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, greater than 1000 diggs already........why am i surprised?
Anyway, yeah, my powerbook also has problems with low battery sleep............it won't turn back on and shut itself off like what my Dell (XP) does when it's out of juice!!! - kdpublish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldn't be so sure that Apple will ever address the issue. Their Cinema Display line exhibits major flaws but the continue to deny the problem. These continuing hardware issues plus the debacle that is Aperture is really starting to give me a case of sour apples.
- x404x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got my 12" G4 PB in Oct 2005, tried to produce the problem to no avail.
- stisev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The person who coded that site deserves a serious assbeating.
Digged anyways - e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@dotpage
This story isn't bashing apple. We're just concerned Powerbook owners who want a fix for this problem. I know I wouldn't be caught dead using any other laptop. -- This is just a pesky problem that has been around since 10.4.3 - more than enough time to come up with a fix.
I believe that it is a hardware issue, and Apple simply doesn't want to acknowledge it as such. Until Apple actually comes out and announces that they are working on a fix, or some sort of action, then I can only assume that they are avoiding the issue at hand. Thus the digg exposure. The more people who are aware of this problem: the more pressure we put on Apple support to take action. - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any ideas whether this is an easily fixable software issue, or some weird coupling from bad capacitors somewhere (very very bad for Apple $$$ wise).
Either way, jeez, how bad could it be guys. As for him even mentioning the 'audio video' crowd. Come on, it must be a recognizable sound, so if you hear it, realize it, and skip back 4 seconds. - ChazKato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0powerbooks suck... well all g4's do.. i mean put a 3 year old processor in a laptop, what do u expect, ill digg just cuss i feel sorry for the suckers that got pulled in to buying the pretty aluminum brushed case
- timpritlove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is quite important that everybody who encounters this problem adds his/her name to the list. This is going to be huge for Apple.
I am collecting information on the possible reasons here: http://tim.geekheim.de/2006/01/07/mac-audio-loop-problem/ - AaronD12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't worry about it. Apple had a similar "defect" with the first-generation iBook G3 (dual-USB). They fixed it with a software update. Just be patient and don't get your panties in a bind!
- Tufriast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ezichko that WOULD fix the problem...but if you have paid over $2,000+ for a laptop - you are paying for Quality with a capital Q.
I like Apple, but if they don't get off their asses and offer a solution, I'll steer clear of the MacBook Pro until a six month period passes. There is no reason to have to deal with these kinds of problem if you are a paying Apple customer. Macs have issues too, but this is unacceptable due to the nature of Music on the Mac, and Podcasting. Since they replaced the Powerbook with the MacBook I bet this doesn't happen anymore, and they expect people to suck it down.
Well, that's mistake number one for them, and M$'s biggest error - not listening to the people. - usergentoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember several BSD and Linux users haveing a problem like this several months back.
They finally fixed it so Im guessing if OSX is using some of code the fix would be the same. - ezichko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woudnt this fix the issue?
http://www.turtlebeach.com/site/products/audioadv/micro/ - salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Glad I have a Boxx :)
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like simple a latency or driver problem, not a hardware problem.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been lucky. Using a 15"er now, bought at about the same time as Kevin's. No lower RAM slot failures, no audio jumping... I'm happy.
Knock on shiny aqua blob. -
