- rpeters, on 11/27/2008, -3/+44TWO graphics cards and still not game-worthy...
- China08, on 11/27/2008, -16/+55But... Macs... they just work!!
- pstroll, on 11/27/2008, -5/+34I love early adopters ... they actually pay to beta test.
- AntiGravityHero, on 11/27/2008, -3/+31You'd think people would have learned by now to never, ever trust the first generation of a newly released Apple product.
- jb12321, on 11/27/2008, -2/+20You automatically blame Nvidia for this issue when no one actually know what it is? Way to go.
It's impossible that Apple may not have provided adequate cooling (because they've never done that before) or that there's a bug in Apples software. - deema1, on 11/27/2008, -4/+20Our family has six Macs altogether, so I would say we are definitely Apple fanatics. However, it has always bothered me the way that Apple management and Mac enthusiasts bash the ever-loving crud out of PCs. You can be better without having to strive to insult the competition every single day. For all their arrogant talk about Macs being superior products and laughing at all the mishaps and breakdowns of PCs, Mac is certainly starting to experience some of the problems associated with mass-manufacturing. That's not a PC problem or a Windows problem. That's a growing pains problem.
Two of our six Macs had major problems. My Mac Pro completely died two days after I bought it and had to be swapped out. While I have to say that Apple was outstanding at resolving the problems, and AppleCare is the ultimate savior, it just goes to show that it gets harder to control quality when you move beyond being a niche product.
But still...I love Apple and probably won't ever go back to PCs for everyday use. I'm just hoping this will bring about a little humility with Apple management. - Zenham, on 11/27/2008, -2/+18Blizzard titles? That's like saying "Hey, my car runs fine as long as it's pointed downhill and in neutral."
- Heiminator, on 11/27/2008, -0/+16a 2004 game should run on every 2007 computer....
- cardyology, on 11/27/2008, -1/+16I blame your mom.
- Roonast, on 11/27/2008, -2/+17Its truly a Mac "Crysis"
- mytCbumps, on 11/27/2008, -22/+36Had no idea Minesweeper was such an intense game for it to lock up a system...
- iSamurai, on 11/27/2008, -11/+24Wait, people are playing games on MacBooks?
- Zenham, on 11/27/2008, -3/+16...ust work ust work ust work ust work ust work ust work ust work ust work ust work ust work
*yanks battery* - Zeag, on 11/27/2008, -0/+12WoW is designed to run integrated graphics... It's not a feat for ANY computer. I tried to install it on a P4 2Ghz with 384mb of RAM and a GeForce2ti and it still ran at decent settings.
- TheKorn2, on 11/27/2008, -0/+11(grabs magic 8 ball)
(shakes it up)
MAGIC 8 BALL SAYS: apple's "patch" will simply turn the fans on high, causing battery life to go into the tank but making the problem go away. Side effect will be lots of supremely pissed off mac fans, until a second patch a month or two later that properly addresses the problem.
(Those that don't study their history are doomed to repeat it!) - SmilinJoe, on 11/27/2008, -0/+11#1 Consumer Rule:
Don't beta test the first run. - inactive, on 11/27/2008, -3/+14Blame Nvidia? Apple are the ones who should have tested their assembled product before releasing it.
You're just a typical fanboy. - sixth, on 11/27/2008, -3/+13So let me get this straight, same issues as the PREVIOUS Macbook Pro's generation...HEAT HEAT HEAT. When is Apple going to EVER realize that HEAT output from graphics cards under load cause problems?!?! I think the only machines that didnt have serious heat issues were the ATI based units from 3 years ago, but they suffered from hot running intel processors and badly applied thermal grease.
Junk and HORRIBLE quality control by Apple...I dont care if its Nvidias fault or not...ever hear of research and development!?!?! - mogebier, on 11/27/2008, -10/+20That's what you get for trying to make a glittery ego-rubbing machine actually try and DO some work, instead of just sitting there looking arrogant.
- FearlessFreep, on 11/27/2008, -0/+9Actually I had about exactly the same problem (symptoms) on a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon card. Turned out to be bad air circulation design on the card. I finally figured out to clean the vents on the card about once a month. After Leopard came out it was much worse and I found out there was a physical design flaw on the Radeon cards; Apple would replace them for free.
- computershack, on 11/27/2008, -0/+9I doubt it. It's a lockup from overheating.
- rpeters, on 11/27/2008, -2/+10I'm a peaceful democratic PC fan...
...so f*** you and happy thanksgiving.
:) - Zippo, on 11/27/2008, -3/+11Hey, WoW runs perfectly on my 2007 MacBook Pro.
- organik, on 11/27/2008, -0/+8I'm a long time Apple guy and I feel the same way. I actually think we're in the majority, it's just the jerks are louder.
I don't care what computer you use, I just know what works for me. - Bootes, on 11/27/2008, -2/+10Some people like to play games, but use their computer for other more important things as well.
- samard2002, on 11/27/2008, -0/+8Blame Nvidia? Apple has no obligation to test their "it just works" hardware configurations? Don't we put up with a singular configuration so that we know all the components work with one another?
- elister, on 11/27/2008, -5/+13For a company that controls almost every aspect of the hardward in order to ensure OS stability, they sure do look foolish when problems like this arise. Hope the fix can be resolved using a software patch, if it can, im sure most of you Mac fanboys wont have a problem buying a new video card or monitor to fix the problem. To anyone who just switched from PC to Mac, obviously wont be buying another Mac.
- MrJagil, on 11/27/2008, -1/+9Of course, WC3 runs smoothly :)
- robbob, on 11/27/2008, -3/+10Investigate the iPhone commercial's graphics and make that work for all of us
- samard2002, on 11/27/2008, -3/+10So the problem has existed for four years and Apple includes this product in their brand new notebook line -- yet you still don't hold them accountable in any way? You may want to analyze your objectivity.
- jtechs, on 11/27/2008, -0/+7Who can I blame for your comment?
What does a problem you 'read' about 'sound' like? - glitchbit, on 11/27/2008, -1/+8you know considering apple has very few hardware configurations to worry about (unlike the windows platform) they shouldn't be having a lot of these software issues.
They also need to be more up front about their hardware issues, people are paying a premium for quality not something that is going to crap out on them. And buying an Apple Care warranty shouldn't be the answer when you are paying the price you are paying. - roxgod666, on 11/27/2008, -2/+9Actually the majority of the US owns a PC. The majority of the US also voted for Obama making the mac side the republican minority. Good try
- jakem1, on 11/27/2008, -2/+8Knowing Apple, I bet it rises 50% tomorrow.
- ShadowXOR, on 11/27/2008, -4/+10This is the exact same issue that happened on my PC, with an Nvidia card. Tons of people have this problem. It IS Nvidia's fault. There are thread discussing it as far back as four years ago with no fix or commentary from Nvidia.
- Blandyman, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6Too long; too stupid.
- Zippo, on 11/27/2008, -3/+9Here's hoping this only requires a driver patch.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 11/27/2008, -3/+9Oh boy, more ***** Nvidia GPUs!
- khyberkitsune, on 11/27/2008, -1/+7Bet you 20 to 1 it's because of the faulty GPU. Remember the problem nvidia had with the die packaging around the 8 Series? Guess what these laptops run. ;)
I had the EXACT same problem, nVidia chip and all. Took replacing the logic board. It's faulty hardware, Apple just doesn't want to admit it because it would damage their "It Just Works" image.
DISCLAIMER: I used to work at many laptop repair depots, and have worked on it all from Alienware (cramped pieces of overheating *****,) to MBPs and high-end HP Portable workstations with swappable GPUs, plus taught laptop repair.
Just listening to the described problems, it's hardware, pure and simple.
Fun fact: 2 out of 3 Apple laptops fresh off the line immediately go back for refurbishing due to failing burn-in testing. At least that's how it was back in 2003. QA's probably gotten worse since then. - catpuke, on 11/27/2008, -4/+10umm.I don't think this applies only to Apple products.
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -25/+31More shoddy apple crap. But hey don't let that stop you fanboys cheerleading for apple.
- lastmaster, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6what a retarded analogy
- Zenham, on 11/27/2008, -2/+8I had a first gen P3 Thinkpad, not a problem to be found. First gen Xbox, Gamecube, and Playstation; all were still working perfectly when I paased them on to charity. A first gen Amiga, no issues. First gen C64, lasted for 8 years.
No, it's not every product, but Apple has a bad reputation for making Quality job 2.0. - deema1, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5Ummm....no. Either you didn't read what I wrote or your reading comprehension is poor.
I think Macs are just as susceptible to hardware problems as PCs, albeit not as many because they're a closed system. However, listening to management and fanboys, you'd think that Macs are impervious to problems. I buy the warranty for my Macs because things break and because Apple has shown that they are willing to actually stand behind their products, fix, or replace them when things go bad. Not many other plans do so. - Blandyman, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5My girlfriend is playing WoW with me now on a three-and-a-half-year-old old Toshiba Satellite with a Pentium M 1.6GHz and 256MB of RAM. It runs on mostly low, some medium, at 1024x768 with a decent framerate (about 25.)
I just installed another gig in her laptop and turned on a few more features. It looks fine and runs good. - TheKorn2, on 11/27/2008, -4/+9You HERETIC! You didn't bow down and suck the almighty one's giant member! Burn heretic, burn from the wrath of the church of apple!
No, seriously, glad to know not all apple users are insane fanbois. It's too bad you're a serious minority, or we could all go on about using our computers rather than arguing about them. - rpeters, on 11/28/2008, -0/+5Lol, you actually had a serious reply.
Doesn't matter if it's two at a time or one at a time...the machine has two graphics cards, neither can perform well apparently. The integrated one is too weak and the dedicated one gets too hot in that compressed little case. - TheKorn2, on 11/27/2008, -1/+6When you win the popular AND electoral college -- yeah it does.
- Heiminator, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5@thefinaleofseem:i have 2 computers, a new laptop that runs it flawlessly of course, but even my 6 year old desktop machine, with 768 mb ram,a geforce 4 ti4600 and an amd xp 2000+ still runs wow+lich king at 1024*768 on high settings with no trouble at all,of course the system requirements went up,but part of the reason for that is that blizzard wants to avoid trouble with customers who complain that it doesnt run well, even in northrend the framerate only takes a marginal hit compared to eg. crossroads
