- jjpertusch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10IN RELATED NEWS: I might be going to the bathroom in the next hour. Ill keep you updated with a confirmation digg. for now:
www.digg.com/people/RUMOR:_JJ_Might_Go_To_Bathroom_This_Hour - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Why do people like this feel the need to make these comments? Digg is a mob rule, voting based system. Enough users thought this was a news worthy story to get it to the front page, deal with it. You don't agree? That's fine - flag it as lame or whatever else you feel is a good reason to get it off the main page and then shut up about it.
- dizzyd_23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Or it may not be... STAY TUNED!!
- Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I really like all of my apple stuff but I buried this as "ok this is lame."
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13I have the logitech harmony remote for x360, and it works with every device in my house that has an IR port...and it does it well. $60 on eBay well spent.
- dameetch, on 10/12/2007, -13/+19Remotes that do that already exist, and have existed for a while.
- craftyshrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Has anybody actually used one of these?
I have, and while the idea is cool and the tech factor is high it is hard to navigate with out looking at the remote. While this sounds like a non-issue, having physical buttons to feel is much more intuitive and you can surf without looking at the remote.
I'm not a huge fan of these remotes I use this same logic to justify why Apple hasn't come out with their "touch screen" iPod. They probably made it and during user testing nobody could change songs while it was in their pocket.
Call me old fashioned, but I like physical buttons. - JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Touch screen remotes exist- and have for some time.... hell, anyone with a Palm/Pocket PC can use it as a touch screen remote.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5These?
http://www.sonos.com/
http://www.pronto.philips.com/ - DeathJux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This sounds like the ideal application of the fabled touch-screen video iPod. Use your iPod as a remote with the iTV, provided the iPod has some sort of wireless capabilities.
That would be a pretty smooth move on Apple's part. - pfranz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Do you guys troll on Apple stuff after just reading the title? This is like the fourth time this fabled 'new remote' has been brought up. It specifically says in this article, "discovering devices it can control around the house, as well as showing information on what’s playing, and how long it’s got left to run."
The new thing is that it sends data both ways, which isn't exactly the most novel idea. This seems harder to implement than the idea was to come up with. But that is what I'm most interested in anyway, how they can do it with our expectations of normal remotes (decent battery life, small size, light) as well as their interface for the device. - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I hear there's one rumored to be in production...
- diggmaddy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Winners don't do different things. They do things differently.
That's what makes Apple a winner company. - tdamore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ironic that Woz left apple about 20 years ago to start CL 9 and make the worlds first universal remote.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it just me who thinks that a remote with coverflow on it would be such a battery hog it wouldn't be worth it? I'm all for cool remotes but I think it would be cooler to have coverflow on my TV rather than the remote.
And I agree with the craftyshrew; there's nothing wrong with physical buttons and they have some advantages. - jtcalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The iPod Virus story was on the front page over 24 hours ago:
http://digg.com/apple/Small_Number_of_Video_iPods_Shipped_With_Windows_Virus - sych0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Calling it now.... the itv remote?
The widescreen ipod babies! - No13Baby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Me too.
This article offers nothing. The title of this thread has more content than the actual article. Yet, it has 238 diggs. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry...just hype. It will be brighter screen with minimally better battery life. lol
- 108programs, on 10/17/2009, -0/+1What Universal remote displays album art and shows you how long is left to go on a piece of media you are playing?
http://www.diggma.com http://coldjung.com - sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow, another apple product made it to the front page. Odd that the iPod Video virus has't made it to the front page but 2 non-existent products have.
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is absolutely correct. Why just last night I was yelling at my DVD player to stop skipping and it didn't matter. I was like "You stupid piece of crap! Why do you keep skipping? There's nothing wrong with that DVD! I'm so sick of you!" and it just sat there.
- mrgoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thanks to the people that posted the links to the remotes that showed what was playing. and as to the ***** that dugg me down, I was actually just ASKING for what remotes did that as I didn't know you could!
Cocksticks.
But thanks to the others that actually helped! I'm looking at some options now. Cheers.
goat - bigjimslade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
It's one thing to control any IR receiving component, but it's another to now what exactly those components are doing. To do that would require two-way communication, currently implemented on somewhat high end equipement. Crestron and others already do that. Talking to the computer is one thing, talking to a dumb DVD player is another. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://digg.com/apple/Apple_iPhone_feature_leaks#c3486112
Sounds like the iPhone - hseikaly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, i agree with some of the comments above. it appears that if they were to create a remote like this, it would be a sort of dumbed down version of the new "video" iPods that works with the iTV. It would be a great way to leverage the touchscreen technology available to these new iPods (if it ever comes out). While I do like the simplicity of the regular Apple remote, I could see some cool applications for a fully customizable display screen remote. I could see it happening.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3How can a nonexistent remote be a dumbed down version of an nonexistent video player?
- Electrox3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not so sure it would be a dumbed down version of the real video iPod as much as the video iPod would carry this feature in its software, therefore creating a visual remote in addition to everything else it does.
- nosferatu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yep. this has been around for some time now. i'm writing this on a brand new macbook pro and i am a die hard mac fan, but sometimes the amount of sycophantic fanboyism on digg disgusts me.

just block the trolls guys... - gregdigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I had thought that this might possibly be true, and now that I've read this article I know for sure that it might possibly be true.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How about apple just up their entire product line?
64 bit processors across the board
Mac mini that can drive the 30" Display
Silent Mac Mini
Solid State Storage options
802.11n across the board
2.0+ MP iSight (Standalone and integrated in MacBooks)
Cellular Modem option for the MacBook/MacBook Pro
Linux binary comparability (maybe a bad Idea, I don't know, but it would be convenient)
Ability to silence the startup chime
DVORAK-layout keyboards
lower prices - proggieus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1AMX
Or
Crestron
Or
Nevo
Or Soon
RTI
Is that enough? - thraxed, on 12/19/2007, -0/+0HAHA...rubbish. http://www.talibkweli.co.uk
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It might be a battlecruiser?!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Nice job Cliffy...make yourself look like a total ***** idiot again just to praise Apple.
It wouldn't even be the FOURTH remote to do this, let alone the first. - karma333, on 09/27/2008, -0/+0Home automation 101? LOL
- greenstork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Touchscreen remotes are useless - you shouldn't have to look at a remote to use it, tactile feedback is an absolute necessity. With all of the industrial design and usability experts over at Apple, you'd think they would get this.
- strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, I wonder if he is involved in this project in anyway. See the "The Wizardry of Woz" article that is on Digg.
- winnopeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Load of crap. :)
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree completely. It'd be like having a touchscreen keyboard, imagine how awful that would be...it would 'look' pretty, but that's all. Whenever i pick up the remote, i never look at it, my fingers 'know' where all the buttons are through their shape and size. It's fine for things like a DS etc, cos erm.....you don't 'not' look at that. No, i'm not blind (that opens up another whole can of worms concerning this touchscreen stuff. :P )
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You must remember though...all those firms prospectively stole Apple ideas. ;)

How so? He may want to see legit Apple stories, but when story after story is some C level blog with a vague rumor from some unnamed source from who knows where saying that Apple is going to do (Fill In Some Wild Crazy Story) and it gets to the front page where it knocks some stories with merit out of the way, he is totally justified in being PO'd.
It makes Digg into a total joke. -
